It probably sounds dumb, but the better a plug-in looks, the more I enjoy using it .... and the red-light distortion definitely looks good, I mean hello?... it has neon lights !!!
Crazy situation, we talk about our gear with -86dB THD (Total Harmonic Distortion; StudioLive 32SX), -89dB (Qu-16) or -118dB (Apollo x8), but we like to use saturation plugins (= distortion) or directly "Overdrive-Pedal" to have 10% of distortion (-20dB) on certain signals and we love it!
I'm working right now on a cinematic piece, and I couldn't get the taiko drums to sound 'griti' enough. So I decided to take a break, and go find a completely different and not-connected-to-what-I'm-doing video, just to relax and clear my head. A video about 'Red Light Distortion'? that felt like a good candidate. And guess what? Red Light Distortion is exactly what was needed on those drums!! lol...
Discovered this while trying to make a bass track sit better and take up a little more space that I just couldn't make work. The little bit of hair that this added sounded a bit too much when it was solo, but in the mix, it definitely fattened the thing up like ate a full meal before coming in for the session. This was a cover song and I kept going back to the original listening for things I was missing and a bit of distortion on the bass was that thing. RedLight fixed it.
Thanks Joe. I was listening on my phone (I know, I know) and the clean bass was inaudible. The distortion brought it right out. I guess you do have to put on the red light!
Thanks Joe. I saw you add that to the bass on one of your mixing videos and as a beginner then it really helped me. Been using it ever since! Thanks again for all you do!
Funny, I discovered this plugin last week when I was messing around with a test mix on my newest song (the first really good song), so this is very helpful!
Good observation about the phasing issue Joe - I heard it loud and clear at 10:16 --- still the plugin is awesome. Helpful video all around - thank you!
I have a ton of distortion and saturation plugins and I honestly think the redlight is my favourite of them all. Decapitator is also awesome but as a stock plugin, it's kinda hard to beat the old redlight.
Ive tried overloud sculptibe, valve plugin, aoftube harmonic dist, ssl native saturator, decapitator, and i got to tell you that this native plug in is just as good or better thant the 3rd party ones. Also tried rc20 from xln......what redlight dist does with drums or bass is just amazing. I deleted all 3rd party ones.
I use this without knowing how too. But I know that soft tube / fuzz works great with that mix knob on everything Mai tai presence instruments drums lol
im not sure but i think the stages are the stages of clipping. with each stage the distortion gets more and more. from my understand distortion has to go through several stages of clipping to get extreme.
I do! I would adjust the high and low frequency parameters in a way that the harmonic spectrum that's currently under-represented gets boosted. Be very careful not to set the dry / wet ratio too high, though - usually, I would use it between 10% and 12% wet. As always, trust your ears (and meterings! :)). -GBY
Hey Joe, how do I show the gain and phase controls on the console? Older videos talk about the Mixtool, but it looks like version 5 has them integrated directly into the console?
hello good night, I have a studio Live 23 3 generation, I uploaded the firmware and it is not working properly, for example the FX effects do not work. Can you help me ?
It's amazing that I came across this plugin just last week and thinking to myself "Amma spend some time learning this plugin" now here you are a few days later posting a tutorial on it..... That has to be God right there 😅🤝
8:18 “just for simplicity sake” That’s literally what the mix knob is for, so it doesn’t get any simpler than that. You actually made it more convoluted just to be doing stuff. Flipping the polarity on a duplicated track is.... I have no words for it.
I do a separate duplicate track, and then only add the grit/specific eq and whatever. It's so much easier to dial in when mixing, then going back to each plug in and playing around with the mix knob..
I always get phase issues when using this one in parallel (mix knob) :( EDIT: haha just finished the video, looks like I'm not the only one. It's a shame cause I really like the sound but It's really hard to work around the phase issues, especially on cymbals
I love it on vocals.
Me too!
It probably sounds dumb, but the better a plug-in looks, the more I enjoy using it .... and the red-light distortion definitely looks good, I mean hello?... it has neon lights !!!
That doesn't sound dumb at all! I feel exactly the same!

Underrated Hidden Gem plugin. Great to see some love for ir!

Hahahah everytime you demonstrate the stock plugins I fall in love with them again 😆 and realize I don't really need much else, thank you
It just works so well. I love Red Light Distortion.
love Joe's tutorials
Good observation about the phasing issue Joe - I heard it loud and clear at 10:16 --- still the plugin is awesome. Helpful video all around - thank you!
Dude, you got such a great singing voice.
Hey Joe, Thanks for reminding me I have such a cool plugin in my arsenal.
All the best, Jay
Thanks Joe. Stay Blessed
This plug is like Frank's Red Hot-sauce. "I Put This Ish On Everything"
This is pin worthy!!! 💯
You're right, Joe. While messing with Redlight recently I discovered that more neon IS better! Youdaman.
I have a ton of distortion and saturation plugins and I honestly think the redlight is my favourite of them all. Decapitator is also awesome but as a stock plugin, it's kinda hard to beat the old redlight.
Except RL is free and DC is like $200.
Red distortion is also great for subtle colour and texture
Hey Joe ran into your personal channel first time today and now again here I subscribed to both 🙌🏼
Cool video Joe. I have always called it "Red Light District" LOL! I love this plug-in though, especially on vocals.
I always call it Red Light District lol
I always read it as literally "RedlightDist" and it never occurred to me that the "dist" was short for "distortion" haha
Same
Neon makes everything better, fact! 💯
Undeniable
can I use it for vocal?
it is always a pleasure to learn from 1 of the best in the field of mixing, THANKS JOE U R THE BEST BRO...KEEP EM COMING..

2:12 We got a new kind of tube distortion ladies and gentlemen.... The Neon tube xD
I absolutely love this plugin
I love this plug in!!!

Thanks Joe!
I use this without knowing how too. But I know that soft tube / fuzz works great with that mix knob on everything Mai tai presence instruments drums lol
Awesome as always!! I would love to hear you mix some metal music..... Your insight would be great

Do you ever use it for mastering? How would you set the high and low frequency knobs?

When will Studio One be available for Linux users?
Hey Joe, how do I show the gain and phase controls on the console? Older videos talk about the Mixtool, but it looks like version 5 has them integrated directly into the console?
Mixer > Wrench > Input Controls - Joe Gilder
@@presonus cheers Joe! You're my hero!
hello good night, I have a studio Live 23 3 generation, I uploaded the firmware and it is not working properly, for example the FX effects do not work. Can you help me ?

I Have Nektar Impakt LX25. How do I engage or activate the faders and rotaries? I am totally clueless. PreSonus Artist 3. Please Help.

Cool plugin. Wish you could turn off the filters though.
Also wish the low pass filter could go up to 20 khz.
Joe How do I get one of those T shirts? Do Tell!

Por favor cuando saldrán los tutoriales en Español, se les agradecería mucho.

Cuando ba ver la actualización de Studio One 5.5
Cool!!! 👍

the same, love sound of the plugin but those phase issues makes it really hard to use!
Yes I too have noticed some phase issues in the demo...🙄
Seems to be more problematic on bass and drums, not as much on vocals
🔥🔥
Funny I still don’t like it, never have. Probably the only stock plugin I really dislike. It just sound cheap and nasty.
