This man is so hot. He looks sexy, sits sexy, stands sexy and walks sexy. besides, he has an incredible voice. He has left all other Phantoms "in the dust". He is THE PHANTOM.
Not all. Some standbys and understudies are better or on the par with the principals. Count his brother Alexander Lewis, Matthew Cammelle, Jeremy Stolle, Jeremy Secomb etc.
Sad original book phantom noises.
This is nothing to seeing Ben Lewis perform this live. His voice literally rings through you and you have goose bumps for the entire song! Such an amazing phantom!!
I like the way you see him at the beginning where he is lying on the piano then gets up and starts composing before promptly screwing it up, it shows how much his music is affected by the absence of Christine and I feel sorry for him because all of his songs are inspired by Christine :(
Ben Lewis's voice has that depth that is needed for this role as the Phantom especially since he is suppose to be 10 years older. I have hear both Rami and Lewis singing this same piece and what both men bring it it is just breath-taking!
The person who played the Phantom is absolutely amazing. His voice and his character suit the personality of the Phantom almost identically! His voice makes me melt.
His name is Ben Lewis.
It took me a while to realise but Ben is definitely the best Phantom for LND, and I CANNOT WAIT for him to come to London to play the Phantom.. SO SO excited!!
chris wagstaff
He will be the best for Phantom 1 and Phantom 2.
Just listen to Gardar Thor Cortes. Flat and emotionless.
@@TheMsiaddict You are so right, Gardar Thor Cortes is so freaking bland😣
Ben has an amazing presence and physicality that is the best I've seen in the role since the days of Michael Crawford. In some ways I find his stillness and silence a bit scarier than someone who spends a lot of time growling and attempting to strangle his leading lady. Ben's vocal technique is beautiful, and it's interesting how his delivery of this song subtly changes between this press preview and the time of the filming for the DVD.
PrincessSolitaire
The other phantom was Matthew Cammelle.
Don't forget this was pretty much just the 'preview' of the show, they've worked and smoothed out the bumps since then...I've seen Ben perform twice and worked and saw his understudy perform once and they are both ah-mazing live!! Just perfect and their voices cause goose-bumps...
Oh don't you just wanna jump into the computer screen, run up there, and kiss the Phantom!?!?! Whether you like "Love Never Dies" or not, you must admit, it's wonderful to see our beloved Phantom again!!!
when i saw this in melb i cried after this, JUST THE FIRST SONG, THE FIRST FRIGGIN SONG! no musical EVER has caused me to do that.
Wonderful. Great voice and acting.
He is the only phantom I will watch!
My older brother decided to try and wake me up by singing this, it was epic.
Just saw this tonight in Melbourne. I got shivers in this scene and it takes a lot to give me shivers from music!! Ben Lewis was absolutely fantastic! And the set design and production was just amazing. I want to see it again already!
i saw this 1 week ago and ben defiantly sang better than now he has improved dramatically for the role, not just voice but emotion as well. he is now, like, perfect... :)
I can't believe I got to see him in the Original in 2018. Out of my six times seeing the production (with the likes of Ramin Karimloo, Hugh Panaro, and other greats), his voice had me on the edge of my seat through the entire show! Amazing stuff.
I bought the DVD yesterday and watched it this morning and yet still I'm looking at clips of it on here. Really love this one.
I adore this musical, the songs are amazing, the set, the lighting and sound!! and the cast are phenomenal!!!
I saw it for my b'day earlier this year and I'm taking my nan to see it in a few weeks ...I can't wait to see it again!
I bought this DVD. Mr. Ben Lewis is awesome. He is incredible as a musical star.
Ben is the best pahntom EVER
well wait till you see his Phantom live because Ben is in the west end
Christina Samuel
He said he's putting his stamp in Phantom. Look where he had put his stamp in LND, nobody could do it as good as him.
This show was outstanding when I saw it! I never cry and after I saw the show I was in tears because of the performance that Ben performed he had such emotion through the entire show u would believe he was the Phantom because he played the role so amazingly. I tell all who reads this go and see it! because it wil change your life forever!! I love love never dies
A much older mature voice for the phantom, even as a fan of Ramins, I can see this is much more in keeping with the character. Well done and good luck to the Aussie cast x
when you actually see this live, words cannot describe the emotion you feel from the phantom, its just brilliant :)
You can't judge Ben by this single clip (which was a press release, btw). He has grown into the role so much since this. As for "emotion", if you see his acting in the scenes like "Beneath a Moonless Sky", or when he removes his mask after "The Beauty Underneath"/Confronts Christine, and especially the Pier scene at the end....wow. Had me in tears, and I'm sure anyone else who has seen this production would agree!
I don't care what anyone says. I went there two days ago, and the singing was PERFECT! I felt all the emotion and whoever says different should go see it live.
My favorite Phantom ♥
This gives you chills up your spine when you're there. Absolutely phenomenal. Weeks afterwards I still remember that chilling but beautiful feeling and I can't stop listening to this song.
Me: (hears the song, swoons)
Me: (hears the song again, swoons)
Me: (hears the song again, swoons)
Absolutely love this song, will never get sick of it, and love ben, he's amazing, and i gotta say i like him better than the london version, as have the album but i work at the capitol so hear these songs every day and get the chills every time!
Just saw this on Premier night in Sydney on Thursday 12th. Amazing. Sat right in the front row & felt his breath! Boy he can belt it out! What a voice. Amazing show & Anna. Wow, she was amazing too. Fabulous show. I bawled all through the first half...So many questions were answered and pieced the story together beautifully. A few references to their past...beautiful, so very beautiful...
I quite literally got goosebumps. Awesome.
Saw this and died. It was a world of complete and utter beauty, perfection and Phantom!!!!!
The musical it's just a bad fanfic, but the songs are just PERFECT
I think the musical would actually be one of Andrew Lloyd Weber's biggest/best musicals if he'd used different characters to Phantom. If it was a complete standalone, with no ties to Phantom at all. Of course, how he'd do that and still have a scene like "Beauty Underneath", I'm not quite sure, but I'm sure he could have pulled it off!
This is so growing on me, took me a while, but I think the dvd will be amazing. I absolutely love LND :)
Saw this show in Sydney last night (Thursday 19th January, 2011) as I sadly missed it in Melbourne. Now, you can watch this video, buy the DVD but it is 937875983749856739867 times better live. It's so powerful and has come a long way and improved since it opened in London. If you have the chance, PLEASE DON'T MISS THIS SHOW!!!!
It's amazing Phantom's performance! So obvious that Christine was, is and always be his existance!!
Love seeing a Baritone do this!!
Ben as the Phantom is simply the best.
no wonder he got picked to play the Phantom in the west end
I saw this lastnight WOW WOW WOW its amazing -3
That portrait is actually mind blowing. I think it is an interesting idea, from the origional robot christine. But seriuosly ... that picture might as well be a robot! It looks like it is breathing, and the moving of it is just freaky freaky. The effects are definatly amazing! And, coming form a HUGE Ramin adn Sierra fan .. I really think that Ben and Anna are a great pair and choice for these roles! they do it in their own way!
EVERYONE! Both these singers are GREAT singers singing a beautiful piece of music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm dying to see the movie also. Gosh it's amazing that Webber wrote :) Always amazing!!!!
ben has the best voice, he IS the phantom
I like him better than Ramin Karimloo - although Ramlin was really good in Phantom!
Ben Lewis is perfect as the Phantom. Mature, emotional and what a fabulous voice!!
Ben, your are AMAZING! No matter what anyone else says!
You make me get goosebumps everytime I hear this song!
You TOTALLY got that right. Is it just me or does the Australian production do better?
Just sayin'.
Nathaninator™
They did better with the Operatic team.
5:14 love that part
Aww don't compare singers!!! Yes Ramin is bloody amazing, but Ben is as well!!! I've seen him as the Phantom twice now (third time in a week and a half) and his voice never fails to give me goosebumps...my nan, who is a massive Phantom fan, she saw Anthony Warlow and Rob Guest as the Phantom, but she was so so impressed with Ben
Just one word.... Brilliant. I saw both the London show and the Melbourne show. The Melbourne show was definitely an improvement... and I'm sorry but Ben and Anna were both so much better in their roles than the London cast. Ben's voice was by far superior.
I do feel very sorry for the Phantom! He really does miss Chirstine very much!
Just saw the show today. It has a few minor flaws but definitely shouldn't be missed! The music was captivating from start to finish, the sets were jaw droppingly gorgeous and on top of all of that, Ben Lewis and Anna O'Byrne shone. It seems rather unfair to judge them based on these small snippets. Trust me, as soon as Ben opens his mouth during the shows opening moments, your opinion of him will be changed for the better.
Amazing production. Loved and have booked my tickets to see it again!!
@PAULSPOTSWOOD I think that out of all the actors who have played the Phantom ever, Ben Lewis (the phantom in this video) is by far the best. I absolutely loved the show and I so hope I can be where he is someday.
Imagine if Ben were The Phantom and Alex were Raoul, the show would be interesting.
That is a very nice number!
I saw this the other day and it is absolutely brilliant live!!! The cast, the costumes, the sets are amazing!!! And the lighting is amazing, helps portray the moods :P (yeah, I notice that now) And the cast are so sweet and kind!
I saw the performance last night and it was absolutely brilliant!! Loved it!!
Really lovely performance.
just saw it today! ben lewis was amazing so much better than in the cast announcement
Though I love Ramin's voice, I hated how the London director staged the production. It was worked and reworked, and it still seemed drawn out and disjointed. Having Ramin's Phantom strangle Christine to make her tell him the truth about Gustav's parentage is so wrong. The Phantom fell in love with her voice first and then Christine as a person. He would never, ever do anything to possibly damage her ability to sing. That's why I LOVE the Australian production so much. Ben not only sings with a more mature voice, but his reactions to Christine are awesome. When she faints, he runs his hand down her arm like touching her has impassioned him. Then he holds her and carries her to the chaise so gently and tenderly and looks so concerned at her. Yet when he threatens her with Gustav's disappearance if she refuses to sing, Ben sounds and looks downright sly and maniacal, so convincing. Ramin delivers these same threatening lines as if he's reading the newspaper. Where is the passion, the desperation? I blame the director for that. There is superb direction and acting with the Aussie production. The production and staging is tight and beautiful. The more mature sound for Phantom and Christine fits these characters perfectly. Ramin and Sierra are good and have great chemistry, but this cast and staging is far superior.
And that My Christine... So possessively bad, but I love it, lol.
Was there no preview time like this in London?
Good Song!
DrinkOmally It was the media call where all the press are invited to come so they have footage to use in news reports advertising the shows. They usually perform about 3 numbers. This happens for most if not every professional production in Australia - not sure about the rest of the world though.
This is a brilliant Phantom!
Honestly, the music is what makes this song not the lyrics, so people really don't care to notice that a lot of the original lyrics say practically nothing, however, if you think about it, the new lyrics are more poetic and have greater meaning. What kind of air isn't empty? By changing empty air to cold night air, it qualifies it and lends greater meaning to the words.
Hasta me dió taquicardia con una hermosa voz 😍😍😍
Is that "Bathing Beauty" that he threw on the floor? No wonder he didn't feel like he's The Angel of Music anymore.
TheMsiaddict no actually it was "Love Never Dies" if you look closely you can see in cursive an L N and D
Thatperformer387
Grins. That's because the only different song was Bathing Beauty, the other songs were all operatic. Beauty Underneath was a rock opera song.
Thatperformer387
This is why I love bootlegs.
If this comes to Broadway I really hope they give John Owen Jones the lead.
Bentertainment Productions
I hope it's Matthew Cammelle, his close friend. JOJ is too famous already.
@PassTheMarmalade1957 The story is the same but they changed many many elements of the show and improved it a lot. Andrew Lloyd Webber was blown away by the production.
@fuego577 Yep! :D i discovered that there was going to be a dvd yesterday :P i was excited all over again xD
@TheJacksForAllTrades The biggest difference is right at the beginning. The whole start of the show was changed so that it opens with "Till I hear you sing" rather than the slower start in London. The end of the show is also different. The lyrics in some of the songs were also changed and it sounded less cheesy than the London performance. The set itself is also quite different. The Australian production has been much more innovative. Overall it ran more smoothly than the original.
You were so lucky to see this live!!! I hope Ben is Phantom again if LND tours again......... On another note, the camera clicks would really piss me off, is this a press night? Or a dress rehearsal?
Preview show
Portrait is definitely better than a doll!
@Phantomgoast Would disagree there. The costumes in this show are very authentic. Phantom in London looked like Sinbad the Sailor half the time!
Some people say that this was not in a theater, when it obviously was
Yeah Melbourne's Regent Theatre, if only people would do their research
Thatperformer387
And if I'm not mistaken it's a grand one with the capacity of 2 K audience.
TheMsiaddict Do you, by any chance, know how many the RAH in London could hold?
Scott Hamp
5 K
@ivanwonghc this video is from when the show first opened. he has improved dramatically since then
I like the emotion put into this. It's hard to say who's better, one because of opinions and two because each new phantom puts a his own take onto the role. What would you rather have the same exact performance every time, or something new to the original?
If you look at the painting... Christine's hand slide down and she turns her head from being sideways to facing forward
I saw that and I flipped
The Reason i like this a little more than amin is because i like it when the phantoms voice is based more around the operatic voice Anthony Warlow, Michael Crawford and John Owen Jones gave it, made the character The Phantom of the OPERA, not saying Ramin is bad, has fucking amazing but i like Ben's operatic style beter, though Ramin has more comfortable range to him as i see it
@manionhobart The video doesn't even do Ben's voice justice. It sounds even better live. He plays the phantom so well. It's almost a shame this song serves as the opening. It's the showstopper for me. It's interesting to spot the revised lyrics here and there as well.
much much better opening than the London production. Such a shame that this story isn't a very realistic continuation of the original. Cause the costumes, sets and music scream phantom, at least most of the time!
as good as seeing it live
Ben Lewis is amazing
I also love how the portrait moves, you notice it from 4:29 :)
I don't know why, but to me, the Australian production of LND looks much more like a sequel to the original Phantom of the Opera than the London production did (even though the story is probably the same.) The London show was beautiful, but it looked more like a sequel to the POTO film with Gerard Butler than it did a sequel to the stage show.
Ben's voice reminds me of some of the Phantom understudies on Broadway. I'm optimistic that we will be able to see LND on Broadway again.
Weird, i think of ben and anna AS the phantom and christine when i watch the LND movie. If i saw sierra and ramin i would think sierra and ramin moslty because im a huge fan of each of them. Anna and ben brin something new to these roles.
@fuego577 I saw it when the understudy for Ben was on, he was AMAZING! :D Im going again on sunday and it will probably be Ben playing the Phantom because it is the closing show.
@JessTheCool1 I agree. also this guy seems to be older which he should be.
The painting is moving...
Moving and breathing.
I saw this in London and Melbourne and Melbourne was far and beyond the better show. Ben as the O
@angusargyle i think he does challenge ramin because ramin has an AMAZING voice, but his voice suits the role of the phantom in poto, and bens also has an equally amazing voice, but it suits the love never dies phantom. thats why im so glad that they got sierra and ramin to do the 25th, and that they are making the dvd release with anna and ben :D
Ben Lewis would be GREAT original Phantom as well. Moreover he's a heroic tenor. He'll infuse the opera vibes to this role.
omg omg this is soo romantic for me just because my names christine omg omg
Is there going to be a cast recording or a movie soundtrack released for this cast?!! PLEASE!
Lol this is really late but there's the 2018 Studio Cast Recording with the AU cast. It's the album with a red background and sparkling silver mask.
love it!
He really is more a Helden Tenor than a Baritone! Helden Tenors have a darker tone quality than regular tenors, but still have the full range. You can tell when he sings up past an F his tone quality is really that of a tenor and not a Baritone. I've never heard a Baritone have that type of lyrical Bb that Ben has... he is a tenor...
He's more tenor than Gardar Thor Cortes, at least.
son los mejores!!!!
It is driving me mad! x.X
@CHEKIExoxo - yes, she moves her right hand with the finger pointing up.
SO great. well done Ben, we aussies are proud of you. and while you really cant compare the casts, my honest opinion is that Ben's voice is far superior to Ramin's, its better trained & better handled. Also Anna, while a different dramatic intensity to Sierra, her voice is of a nicer tone & of better breath support because she is a trained opera singer. Sierra is much more a 'musical theatre' singer, &to me is not preferable as Christine. I cant stand that 'poppy' sound that sometimes creeps in!
I love all four of them. Ramin, Ben, Sierra, Anna. They are all exceptionally brilliant. I loved both London and Melbourne production. Melbourne had crazy color that made my eyes pop and my mouth go 'wow' but London had the appropriate darkness one would expect with the Phantom that made sense. Im a Phantom fan and have no trouble accepting both.
