  • The safest way to clean your cars engine without water using a hose or excessive amounts of water so you do not have to worry about shorting a connector and causing electrical damage to your vehicle. This is the safest way possible to clean your engine bay. This waterless engine bay cleaning uses Dawn dish soap to break down any grease or dirt that has built up and minimizes the need for harsh chemicals such as brake cleaner or engine degreaser that can cause damage to rubber components or other systems. Some cases you will need one of these products but for majority of the engine bay cleaning you can get away with using a mild soap and an assortment of brushes shown in the video. Cleaning a car and detailing a car is one of the most satisfying and rewarding experiences. A little caution goes a long way. From my experience, directing water away from or covering the distributor (if you have one) is the only precaution needed. You present an good option here for those who are unsure or are extra cautious. Personally, I want to rinse the soap residue off. Long term effects of something like dish soap is to dry out plastics, rubber, and finishes. The 303 rinse and wipedown helps.

I find detailing as oddly satisfying, relaxing and as stress reducing as a good massage. Btw I started doing it after watching your videos. One tip - try replacing or cleaning up the rusty bolts with a wire bristle brush and adding a small dab of black paint on them. It would give the engine bay that ‘new from the dealer’ look.

    • @sashbar
      @sashbar 5 лет назад +1

Just bear in mind that when you are selling your car, replaced or tampered with bolts in the engine bay raise immediate suspicion of repaired/replaced wings. You will be asked if your car was in an accident. You will honestly say no, it was just engine detailing.. 9 out of 10 won't believe you and walk away. I probably would. And no, you won't be able to paint it over so it would have a factory look. One can see tampered wing bolts immediately.

Great video man but let me pass on some advise or tip. 1- I suggest to use a stainless steel wire brush or brass wire brush for cleaning the aluminum parts of the engine. If you use a steel or ferrous metal brush you will cause corrosion on the aluminum parts. What happens is the steel particles from the brush get impregnated into they aluminum and cause what we in aviation call dissimilar metal corrosion.2- install a battery back up device that plugs into 12 volt cigarette lighter plug outlet. This will save you a headache of settings and reprogramming your electrical things.

Honda radios have a theft code that must be entered once the battery has been disconnected. Often, this code isn't present with the vehicle and a phone call to the dealer has to be made. Battery back up is a great idea!

The three rusty bolt heads can be addressed with a paint marker or spray paint, I know, a little OCD but I love to finish a job completely. I always have brake manifolds rust so I mask them off and spray paint them black. Getting rid of of anything rusty under the hood makes an an amazing difference. I have a Jaguar XJ-SC 12 cylinder and do the occasional car show and by using simple cleaning techniques, buffing metal and hiding rust you can fool people and even judges that you spend hours under the hood.

I have a tip on Honda's. Radio code. Always make sure you have the radio code before disconnecting the battery. Another one is Toyota. After reconnecting some Toyota batteries, it loses its memory for the computer for idle. After starting, you might have to hold your foot on gas pedal to keep it from stalling. Average relearn for idle is 10 to 15 minutes. I get some people call me and they think they messed something up after cleaning engine bay or just installing a new battery.

You could get by with using 2-3 walmart bags to cover the battery, and distributor, a diluted degreaser50/50 and a low pressure sprayer such as a Worx spray gun, start the car up ASAP
let it run a few minutes, Then blow dry with air gun or battery leaf blower. Then the dressing. I have been doing this for years with no problems what so ever. Engine bay looks BRAND NEW.
Still a great how 2 video.

For myself I wouldn't disconnect the battery unless you hook up a memory saver power source. You will lose all your seat settings, radio settings and likely you will have to drive around for a while until the ECU is reprogrammed from driving and from the start and stop cycles. If you need to smog your car soon, it will fail until the ECU is reprogrammed.

Agree, always disconnect the battery.... water is ok to use, you just dont hold it on any one area for any length of time. Ive not used 303, Koch Chemie Motorplast is a good product.. just evenly spray it over the engine and leave... you dont touch it. I think its a better finish looking from what you got from 303.Also throughout the cleaning and finishing.. touching the engine area could possibly introduce dirty binding

*Better to disconnect battery to avoid electrical short before washing engine, although I've washed many engines and never disconnected the battery, nor had a problem. Spray entire engine and bay with degreaser, let it sit for like 10 mins and rinse the engine off like normal. Then use a leaf blower to blow dry the engine and bay. Last reconnect battery and enjoy your super clean, dirt and oil free engine!*

Spray everything, let soak for 2 or 3 minutes (or one 12oz beer) wipe bad areas with clean rag and blow rest off with air hose or leaf blower. Looks brand new. (New cars have mostly plastic covers under the hood.) If it has never been done may have to do it twice. (Grab a six pack). I throw a blanket on the windshield to keep it clean.

If I remove the battery from my 2019 Acadia, I have to reset the fobs and that leads to a lot of problems. I'll bet it loses my bluetooth connections too. Instead of using the brush and the soapy water, you should use a rag dipped in soapy water and rung out and wipe an area, then dip back in bucket and repeat, so you don't have water running down. Also those cheap Member's Mark disinfecting wipes might work for tight areas.

Cedric Webb in old cars maybe it wasn't, but in modern cars I think it is. Not only because of the electronics, but also the fact that any remaining liquid can evaporate and stick to places that might cause shorts or just plain rust and bad connections. Taking the battery and letting it dry for a few is not a bad idea at all, mainly in European and German cars, which seen to have more than 20 electronic centrals sometimes. Like the Citroen DS4. Water can't get near that, or it will be close to 10 grand in damage.

your airfilter is behind that intake tube that you covered,so even if you get water in there,or even pour water in there, itll simply drain out

Be careful about taking the battery off. In some cars, disconnecting the battery can completely wipe its computers data, making it unusable without a proper reprogramming. Do a little research beforehand. From what I have seen, Mercedes and Land Rovers from the 2000s and later are just some examples of cars where you don’t want to disconnect your battery. Great video as always ;)

Thats hard to believe. But I wouldn't doubt it. Thoes types of vehicles are nothing but trouble. Hondas are much better in terms of reliability

Dawn dishsoap is a petrol product and so are many of your cable coverings and wires, this will cause the dishsoap to eat away at your seals and make your cables/wires harden and crack.

Nice job. But looks like a lot iof work. I use s100 . Spray it on , wait, hose it off. You must cover some thing with a rag. I find it works easy.

Is it better to use Dawn or the engine cleaners sold by detailing companies ?

I thought it was a good idea to cover up the battery, the alternator, distributor and cap, anything where you don't want water to get in. My power steering container is leaking somewhere, so I want to remove the greasy build-up from the drip to determine which hose is cracked. I'm sure it's not the pipe leading to the pump because there's no drip or greasy build-up on that side of the engine. I want to try just soapy water to see if it will get clean, but I don't want to accidently drip any water that can wreck one of the parts. Overall, the engine bay is clean, just greasy build-up somewhere under near the container where you add the power steering fluid. I hope you see this comment. Thanks in advance if you have any advice!

I still feel one ought to pressure wash, particularly underneath the engine bay. What would recommend cleaning the carpet inside the vehicle?

How often do you typically clean the engine bay? I love detailing my car 2-5 times a month, but maybe this is an every 2-3 months deal?

You should be detailing your car at least 2-3 times a week. This way it will outlive you.

You Should tell them that on the newer cars , removing 12 volts you will have to reprogram some options , even the windows going up and down, otherwise good video. 🙂
