Painting the car black ...with guide coat 🥷
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 окт 2024
- We ran out of guide coat spray bombs so we're going to mix up some black base and spray the entire car black. Once it dries, we'll start sanding it with 220 grit on the DA. The perfect outcome would be to sand off all the black guide coat without breaking through the primer anywhere. We want it to be one surface when it comes time to paint it 🙏🏼

Young man , please look in to getting yourself a sanding vacuum system. I own a bodyshop in Massachusetts and what a HUGE difference they make with keeping you clean the car clean the shop clean . And the sandpaper lasts longer. I bought a Eurovac System about 20 years ago It is still kicking. And just recently bought a Rupes system . They are not that expensive.
And they are fast and I know you like fast
Cheers William
Two things that may help, take them or throw them away.
1. It might be beneficial to put a metal ball valve in line on your air line. That way you can regulate the air flow and not kink your line which might cause a leak or blowout.
2. Use some acetone on the inside of the car or after sanding. Just wipe it on. It will flash dry and pick up all the dust on it and clean at the same time preparing you to paint.
Love these projects, guys! I don’t miss an episode. Keep up the excellent work!
If you want your car to look like glass and flawless with no waves you should block it all out with a long board using 220 grit by hand. It does take a bit longer but worth the results!
yep, thats the best way to get show car results, i've done quite a few not so important ones with a palm da instead of blocking and they turn out very well, as long as the main bodyworking stages were done as well as possible.
like chad in this vid he knows where the worst or hard to da flat bits are
to some degree some of his stuff is a bit hackish but when you look at the reasons why he is doing what he is doing it works.
I gotta say...Chad,you and Jolene are very lucky to have such a good crew, with Doug and Nathan!...Working on three projects, together with Jolene's great video talent..has had me watching every day!...Great Job!👍💯
Me, not having any experience with body work and paint, I've learned a ton. Thanks you Bad Chad, for explaining what you are doing and why. Seeing the process and basically being given tons of your own tips and tricks that you've learned along the way. I never knew about a guide coat or why a fella would do such a thing, but makes a ton of sense. Anyway, thanks for the free education. I'm currently at a point in my life where I have to make a big decision on my job. I'm considering moving on from my 25 year career and starting something new. This is a skill that I'd enjoy learning. Maybe I'll do that. Who knows, but I've gained a ton of inspiration from ya.
Very interesting build. I really like the "lower slung" look. The chop top is really nice. Thanks for the ride. At 79 I'm lovin' watching you make art.
After all the negative comments today I’m eager to see the final product. Thanks Chad and crew for sharing this program with those of us who enjoy watching 👍
The only way to utilize a guide coat before paint is to cover t the entire car with a generous coat. Block sanding with a fine paper will expose any imperfections in the car. They must be fixed before the top coat is applied. That is why painters charge what they do. It is time consuming work, but the end result is worth it.
There are cheap paint jobs, and there are some very expensive paint jobs out there.
Just like everything out there, you get what you pay for.@@lonniecole1435
Great comments pointing out all chads mistakes. I mean hes never done this many times over ,had his own tv show or worked alongside some of the greatest most wellrespected car builders like all the people here watching ....oh wait he has done all those things 🤦♂️. Keep doing you Chad, always enjoy watching your process
Another of my options only .... not intending to offend, however if you are block sanding you want to block the door and fender gaps together......so the are on the same level. Love enthusiasm.....DA sanders follow contours and feather edges They do NOT make things flat....smooth yes. Jo no offense intended. 😊
Foolish !!! That’s for b s hotrod garages who mud the entire car with cake ….if u block across all panels , u will hit metal and go thru the primer which defeats the purpose , period !
i used to use base for guide coat all the time, prep shop was pretty colourful as i used blues reds greens etc always worth askking you paint shop if they have any mixed base that was wrong they selling off cheap or even having to dump,
the suction blocks and sanders work pretty well to be honest, i'm old school 70's and sure it took a bit of getting used to with the suction blocks but it was alot better for both the job and cleaning up the shop after, let alone the health aspect
that whistling is your sanders bearings crying out for some lube, yes, you can lube DA without it getting onto the work
Love watching your videos, I just got done spraying a vdub roadster with a real heavy .025 flake did it all out of our barn saving up to throw up a shop. Some of the best work is done in places you couldn’t even imagine.
Greeting from Alberta! I watch Fitzee’s channel lots when I need motivation to get out into my garage but I had a buddy over last night checking out a resto in my garage and he asked if I’ve ever seen your videos and I havnt but now here I am and looking forward to having a new load of body and fabrication content to enjoy
Painting where you work!! You do what you have to do ! When I got the bigger garage it just ment that I had to cover more cars before I did paint. The small garage got just as much done as the big garage.
I used to put water on the floor When I went to paint .
Pro tip from an ex spray painter. put some wax and grease remover in a spray bottle and spray each panel, the shine from that will show up every ripple. And I would expect a few with this type of prep
and use black primer
Where's the guy who was talking about how well the fans draw that they don't even need a respirator.. cuz I see nothing but a haze
It's so funny that one little fan is not going to draw it outside all it's doing is going all over the shop and coding everything inside the garage. Then after all that sanding he's going to paint that car with that spray gun he just used did you see how bad that gun spread 😯 lol all that work to use a super cheap gun. It's ok to use a cheaper one for primer
Always learn something from these videos. Thanks Jolene and Chad!
Hey Team Hiltz I hope everyone is doing well today. Chad the Ford is coming along nicely & really looking good in my opinion! I hope everything goes smoothly & then 400 and clean up & paint! Doug I hope you are able to straighten back out after all the time inside the Bugatti cleaning. I hope Chad is not going to be grinding down the welds after you spend all the time cleaning. Jolene great job of camera & video work as always you do such a good job of it! I am glad to see some moving forward with your Bugatti going on I am really looking forward to seeing it completed for you! It was good to see Fina go out during the guide coating she is such a good girl.
For a perfect Result, never ever sanding Whit rotate machine!!!
Now he has to block sand the whole car again. That's at least 2 more episodes.
But your still watching 👀 so you must be interested or just bored 😅
Wow , u sound ridiculous
I would do this final step by hand with a long block. Be interesting to see how it turns out. You'll prolly get away with it depending on your DA skills as long as you aren't painting it black or a similar dark color. Good luck, just hate to see all this time spent and when you get to the most important part, taking a short cut. I wouldn't, but that's just my belly button. DIYer's without a lot of experience should long block this final step for sure. Painted white, you MAY be OK. Painted black - not so much, you will have issues. I would long block across my door-to-fender edges for sure also. I get it - it's just a driver, but lotsa time and money spent to skip the final most important details.
This method got his prior few cars to SEMA !!!
Love to see a plan come together guide coat for the win!!
Why use guide coat. And then use a da..you need to block it out to get it straight. Unless waves are your thing.
Hey armchair body man … he blocked prior with 80 … it’s straight …. No the proof is in the pudding , if u understand how it’s done …. Chad has cars that went to sema !!!! Hello 👋
You will never convince the want a be body men out there of that.
I remember seeing a hudson localy a few years ago, early fifties model i guess, 4 doors. Gorgeous car ! Low long roof so many nice details. Wicked looking interior, very original. That thing is stuck in my mind 😊
You can buy air regulator's for 3.99 so much easier an save on matierals and over spray
Looking good Chad! Your technique works and the end result will be pleasing to most. A Shoebox Ford is on my radar for a future project, maybe a Ute! I have a space like you I call the paint booth that is my best space, lighting, insulation, etc. and turns into the assembly room and clean room until the car goes to it's next home. Keep up the good work and informative videos. Check out the couple of short vids I've posted. Good job to Jolene too!
My gosh! Turn that pressure down and stretch the material. Your not doing a Flow coat on your guide coat.
OH GOSH , thanks for your expertise
Got to hand it to you Chad for a guy that doesn’t like to sand you’re doing a great job. The sanding part is the most tedious part.
Can’t wait for the “color” Jolene has picked out. This “50” lead sled shoebox is going to be a cool car to drive. 👍
The other thing is the guide coat . It is there to show high and low areas. Then they can be corrected. Chad just sands it back off.
Hand ✋ Block it...not DA...😢...😊
He has already guide coated and block sanded that twice already. This is at least the third time with a guide coat, the da isn’t going to hurt a thing sanding it. He will have to block sand certain areas anyway that he can’t get with a da
@@ReedThomas71thank god I’m not the only one who gets it!! …. Ridiculous how many book smart dummy’s comment , with the premise they are experts
All of the negative people here about blocking or da I have been following chad for a long time and I never seen a car that he painted that was not pretty much perfect you tell me how this man has been in business this long doing the work he does the way he does it and you call it wrong do you guys have a show on cable do you guys have people coming to your shop to do custom cars for there business he may not do it the way everyone else does but it’s his way his videos when this car is done there won’t be a chin not on the floor saying dam that looks good. Keep on doin what you do chad.
why not use "dry guide coat" Bad Chad?
Yes, damn it's looking great . . #1 Bad Chadism - Take what you like & throw the rest away. . . Keep kicking ass, pissing people off, and enjoying life. . . Bad Chad you a bad mutha muh brotha. . . 💪🏼🐻
Hey Chad, ytr a HEPA filter bag in your shop vac. I've used one for pickig up dry wall dust and dust from paint motorvycles with good success. I've seen others drop a damp towel over the exhaust area that worked fiarly well. I'm in the same boat as you are, as I"ve heard you say they are not your favourite activities. I would sooner go to the dentist (sorry DD's), but it has to get done to be done. Great camera work Jolene, those close ups let us see what Chad is seeing.
I would like to see that car painted gloss black. Body looks good & straight enough to make a real stunning ride 👍
A dark Cherry red would look good on it !
i totally agree !
Not long ago, Doug painted the paint booth white. White walls helps with distributing more light on the car to see things better.
Spraying other colors on the wall is a rather bad idea.
A clean shop, is a "happy" shop!
🐿get her done Chad. I know it's going to be very nice. don't go squirrel on this one.
i'm not sure the body would be straight enough for black? think i would do this one white.
Guide coat on door jams Why? Guide coat is for block sanding not DA you will not get it flat and straight with DA just saying with 50 years experience.
Chad's not looking for perfection. He's just looking for good enough......
@@Hanlonsgarage That's a shame. I was never like that.
Why would you just want to make things just getting by and not making it premo.
I thought the same thing. how are you going to get a car straight without blocking ? Only 47 years experience here.
You can not do the same thing with a DA that you can do by block Sanding it. I'm 76 yr. old woman and unfortunately with some of what you do. I'm a perfectionist and their is no way that I could work that way.
I use chalk line chaik cheap and easy to use
Looks cool with the guide coat on. Leave it like that 😂 Sounds like those rattle cans are expensive. Would be a lot cheaper to just buy some cheap quarts like you used
I’ve used the dry powder guide coat with good success. Lot less work and time applying than painting it on. I would figure Chad always talking about saving time he’d use something less involved, but we all have our ways.
how about wetting the floor to keep dust down. When I was painting cars we would wet down the floor every time.
Can some of these keyboard warriors let the man do it his way, and enjoy watching and learning from the outcome. Some of these comments really are petty!
No matter what, Chad will
always do it his way, so these comments don't affect him.... even if it's "quick and dirty"
work!
Hi Jolene Chad and Doug. I'd like to see you paint it some color other than black. Some will like it some won't but you have to be satisfied with it. God bless and have a blessed evening and night
Gunmetal Grey Metallic would be totally Sick looking with black ghost scallops or black silhouette ghost flames 🔥
I hafta paint in the same garage I sand all my stuff in.. has to be done sometimes.. agree with you totally.. we try to hang a curtain to separate it from rest of the shop but it is what it is
Got to love high build primer..lol .it is a bit rock hard but in the end a perfect panel for paint..looking good crew .nice .🎉❤😊
Primer a bit expensive but the single stage Polly will lay down like glass and any other imperfections will be buried in the paint..
I typically use a dark gray or black spray can primer for my guide coat
Back in the day used cheap lacquer primer for guide coat use red over gray or whatever contrasting color
Thank you for all of your great videos!!!
That car would look beautiful black or deep maroon
I guess block sanding isn't a thing in Canada.
@@daddysails8926Well that's nice, at 65 no they aren't my thing making them. Bottom line for those that don't know or have never done this work, block sanding should be the last step before paint. It's still taught that way to this day. By the way, the say is " not impressed in the least"
I love all the criticism, more than likely from people that have no clue. I have heard him say at least 30 times that it’s not a show car it’s going to be a driver. There’s a big difference, wait till the end it will look good
Using the DA is where you get that ocean wave Chad always talks about
Considering this has been the most effort we have seen put into body fill and primer I’m thinking Chad is taking on the challenge of painting this car black.
Black is the best for the car 😊
He is not painting the black for real the black paint is just a little dusting so when he sands it before the final painting he can find the high and low spots
I'm really looking forward to seeing some colour on it now. She's gonna look awesome... 👌
Hello yall, we made it too Thursday Bad Chad Nation
Hay BIG HEAD
wet sanding is better for paper..seems to keep it clean, also was told once that sanding wet is able to remove more with less grit. U were talking about air doing it I think the wet does it and it also keeps dust down
I think he should at least polish the other car with the rust on just to bring back some of the original paint color I'm a steady viewer from ohio
Watching You Both & The Rest Of The Team Build Rides Always Makes My Day!
Great work love this car
I already did, put comment about you sanding in your paint room
Just keep doing what you want. Happy in your life
If you need to clean the sandpaper on the disc just grab a hard bristle small brush turn on the da and run the brush on the sand paper it works wonders just a suggestion chad
Hello everyone from far north Queensland Australia awesome to be back again watching your video doing a awesome job Chad and Jolene great work love it blessings cheers 😊
Ventilation is really BAD!!!
No, ventilation is good.
It’s Chad that’s Bad.
Good job 👍😎
Wife didn’t like the sound of the Sanding , so i had to go to the shed and watch the video ! 😊
hi chad i use the same gun as you and what i found was the filter in the neck does not let high solids through so i just removed the filter and strain primer and it sprays way better all the best al
Looking forward to seeing the car go to paint. Is there something going on with the left C pillar? There appears to be a large horizontal crease that wraps around from the door to the back window. I hope Chad addresses this when sanding the guide coat.
Go with a matte midnight blue
Getting closer to the paint booth . Hopefully a Royal Blue version with beige interior.
Will all you experts and perfectionists give it a break. This is a driver quality car with a driver quality paint job. He is not going to go for the riddler award with it.
good job!
How do you see with overspray on the glasses
To all you super experienced paint sprayers out there: let’s assume a perfect paint job costs $20,000; let’s assume you work for $75 per hour. That works out at 266 hours which is 33 x 8 hour days ……. enjoy watching that ‘real time’ RUclips channel. You could call it ‘Watching Paint Dry’. This time next year there’ll be millionaires!
I don’t care how straight it is. I’ll just be glad to see paint on a car.
Hey Chad, I'm sure that your viewers will be pleased to know that, even despite my hearing impairment, I am hearing you perfectly well, and I'm delighted to see you wearing an appropriate mask. Love your work !!
looks like the car is going to look really good in paint ! nice work team !
Hell yeah 👍
That's how you Make It Work right there Chad!
Jolene : Candy Pearl Brown Sugar , check it out , it’s a cool color you don’t see !
Poor doug I feel for him I always hated cleaning stuff over a head in a car like that
Closer to paint. Thanks
Also Chad, I have used the powder and I feel it goes on smooth and does a real good job. Ronnie.
Base coat with no hardener will definitely gum up your sandpaper.
Looking great 😌 can’t wait 😜 too see the final results know it’s going to be a awesome 😎 ride okay ✅
The black guidepost paint made the car look like a smoke color. Which gave me another idea which I almost dare not to say. Here goes; you could paint her smoke. I am torn between classic black, white and smoke which would give the car its' own identity. Decisions, decisions. Like I said yesterday. This car has had so much attention only the Kings carriage has seen better fair. Have a good one!!!
Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!!!!
If you have been around a while, Chad just does things "his way". Cheap, easy, fast, with what's laying around. These cars are not really made to be drivers, not be show quality. They look good in the end.
Car is going to look great!
Awesome, Thanks
I reckon you could have just put the clear coat over the guide coat and call it a day. It look great the way it was!
I was looking for a similar comment … that old girl with guidecoat looks cool … it could literally be cleared over and turn heads
I like the fact you can do on a budget and not having to spend hundreds on fancy stuff
Black looks good on the car.
Thanks
Now I'm wanting some Tim Hortons donuts !
Getting her ✅️
