@mjstbnsn that's an intriguing thought! It's possible that some of those in Evergreen's indigent graves may have experienced success. In other graveyard tours, Arthur highlighted people who were successful, but were either laid to rest in pauper's graves, or only had 3 or 4 attendees at their funerals.
Some of my ancestors didn't know when or where they were born, and church records get lost due to fires, floods, and wars. Some of the surnames of ancestors are not even known because people didn't know how to read and write. This is one of the reasons why genealogy is so interesting.
@@chriswhiteauditions I worked in a funeral home as a kid in high school and I did a funeral one time who was a 90 yr. old priest. I was there, the gravediggers were there and one priest and one nun. Now that's sad because this guy gave his life for thousands to know and love God and no one gave a shit to show up!!

Those kids on Little Rascals had deplorable living conditions. They received little or no pay. These were not good times for their childhoods. As adults, they hardly had any resemblance of success.
I love the Carnival section of the cemetery. No matter if you cleaned the circus grounds or was the center star of the 3 ring circus, you had a place there. I thought that was awesome.

Thank you for the dignity given to the ones that were considered "below us" all those years ago. It just makes me shake my head in sadness over how cruel man can be. You mentioned that movies have been filmed in this cemetery. One of those movies is the final scene of 1985's "Mask" starring Cher. A scene that is entirely made up as the real life Rocky Dennis' body was donated to science. Also, And though not a celebrity, in the 442 Infantry section, one should read the story of Ted T. Tanouye. What he did was absolutely amazing and deserves to be known (hint, he was one notch below Audie Murphy). A truly fascinating cemetery for the history it contains.
I'm going to sound like a huge douche but as a History major from Ole Miss I can say that these tours are amazing (not that anyone needs a degree to say that). Great camera work, in depth history but you know exactly when to shut it off and move on. You're doing everything right dude! Keep it up!

RIP to all who have graves here. Such beautiful and talented people. I worked on the Gold Line Project as an engineering designer. We had to move Chinese graves that were found within the project's legal right-of-way. The beautiful and improved relocation of moved graves is what one sees now. We honored the dead by doing the right thing for them.
Were the remains of those graves found entombed within vaults or simply buried in caskets?
While I knew most of the celebrities or at least their works, the most interesting person to me today was George Ralphs. When I was stationed in San Diego, Ralphs was my favorite grocery store. Thank you for including people who aren't necessarily celebrities in the normal sense of the world.

Thanks for remembering Matthew Beard. Stymie was one of the best-loved characters in the Our Gang/Little Rascals series. Matthew went through a dark period of drug addiction, but beat it and went on to resurrect his career. His smile was unmistakable. I remember watching an episode of “Sanford and Son” and seeing a character break into a smile. I immediately screamed excitedly, “It’s Stymie! Omigosh, it’s Stymie!”

Love this old (for California) cemetery, so much history and so many interesting and eclectic people resting here. Lots of childhood memories--Our Gang, Jack and Eddie, Beulah and do-wop to name a few. Thanks for your always kind invitation to join you, Arthur!
I really enjoy your videos. My favorite movie that has Eddie (Rochester) Anderson in is "Topper Returns" but I also love "Cabin in the Sky" where Eddie stars opposite of Ethel Waters. What wonderful talent and entertainment is seen in that movie. I wish your carnival and circus graves would have included an equestrian (I am an equestrian). Not too far from my home is the town of Delavan Wisconsin. There are many graves of circus performers in the Delavan graveyard including some equestrians. Gary

Was buried at I went to find his grave and found it I had tears in my eyes when I found it I put prayed I thought he was cremated I would like to say thank you for this it took 20 years thank you I loved all of his movies.
This was a great one. Some of the stories are so shocking to hear while others are amazing.

Mr. Dark, thank you for including information in the graveyard profiles about how American racism played a role in how people were laid to rest. It would be very easy to not include that information, but it says a lot that you choose to include that truth. It speaks to how much racism has influenced American life, and it gives a greater context and appreciation for each graveyard.

Any Potter's Field or neglected cemetery makes me feel sad and depressed. I think that this particular cemetery also has a sad history of racism. I wish that everybody had the same level of respect in the end.
@@MegaTmarshall I certainly agree with you, my father is buried here and they let you know before hand they don't have the means to keep it up as it is ran by a nonprofit. I had to provide the sod for his grave and I have to water it as well as they do not have a sprinkler system.
I have seen both versions of "The Imitation of Life," and "You Can't Take it With You" was on TCM this morning! I loved watching "The Little Rascals" every day after school!
I hadn't heard of Imitation of Life. Now I want to watch it !

I'm a HUGE fan of the Little Rascals myself, I had a bunch of VHS tapes with an array of episodes that my uncle gave to me years ago, sadly though, I haven't seen them in a little more than 10 yrs now. Not sure what happened to them but seeing as my ex-husband was in the Navy at the time, they were probably lost by the movers then :( I wish I knew!! Thank You Hollywood Graveyard for yet another beautiful, respectful and delightful ....and job well done....tour of some of the most famous and beautiful resting places of those who went home before us....may they all RIP!!
I bought the double DVD of " Imitation of Life " some year's ago at Walmart.
My favorite on is with Lana Turner💗. I have to thank my grandmother for Introducing me to this movie.

When I was in college in OC we took a trip here to see the 442 memorial. For a city as diverse as LA, it's unbelievable how segregated it was. And yes, we also learned about the infamous speak easy. It's a must see.

Nice work Arthur as usual, really interesting cemetery, love the Showmans Rest the best but Rochester & Stymie are on top of the list too along with Frank Braxton. The Lankersheim and Van Nuys graves are so historic beyond words. It's so cool that the homeless and nobody's can be interred here along with celebrities in the City of Angels. 🍺
What I like about your videos is how well you narrate them, how much information you have on the persons, and the fact that you say where you are and what section of the cemetery the person is interred. Also, your closeups are still and not blurry. Thank you!!

@@mangot589 I’ve watch several different channels…most of them kind of meander and aren’t focused with zero production values…or ones who try to do shock value things suggesting “we may see bones or open caskets”…this channel is more focused and well produced, he makes them entertaining and interject humor while still showing dignity to the people in the graves shown…definitely one of the better produced graveyard exploration channels on RUclips..
The history behind each individual that has past has me glued to my screen. Great job doing research on each person man. I just realized that LA has alot of grave yards.

I'm late today because you posted on a Tuesday & I had to work LOL. Wow, this was awesome!! A lot of Black entertainers, perfect for Black history month! And I love that you highlighted the memorial to Japanese Americans today since it is Remembrance Day (February 19th). It's truly a dark mark for us in our country's history, one of many. It's important to remember all of the things that happened so we can move on TOGETHER as a society & better ourselves. I love how you remember all of those things in your videos instead of just the bright, happy, shiny parts of Hollywood. Well done, Mr. Dark!
And thank YOU for adding some context to Remembrance Day. I like hearing anecdotes and different personal perspectives on major historical events. It's far too easy to separate oneself from the reason for these days of remembrance, so for me, hearing from people from said country, or people touched by said event, makes it feel more "real" to me........if that makes any sense.

Even if you did go to these cemeteries, you’d probably just walk by the grave and not realize it was actually someone who was prominent at one time…I’ve actually went to a couple of the cemeteries he did videos on and remember walking past a couple of the graves but not thinking anything of them because I had no idea who they where…

Outstanding work once again HG, most of these folks I have never heard of until now after watching your videos I feel somewhat smarter and find myself everytime I drive past a graveyard now, I actually live in Los Angeles, wondering when I look at them as I drive past who's graves i'm seeing. I feel like I should go visit some of these cemetery's now as well...

I believe Rochester was also one of the original Harlem Globe Trotters. Also a very charitable man, as were many that were involved in the Jack Benny Programs, including the man himself (He must have just rolled over in his grave! I hope his vault is still guarded lol). A great man!

The movie Immitation of life ...caught me one late night on TCM... I thought it was one of the best movies I had ever seen.. it is one of my very favorite.. I never can pass it up when I see it on. I truly hope you get to read this, Mr. Dark. I'm new to your videos, within the last couple of weeks or so, and I can't get enough. I'll binge watch for hours and never get tired. Your dedication to bring the departed, whether super famous or barely famous, back into the limelight is inspiring. I've been fascinated with cemeteries and graveyards since I was a kid. Like you did, I thoroughly enjoy just walking through them. So peaceful and quiet. I often look for old and abandoned sites just to see how long they've been there. After watching a plethora of your vlogs, I so badly want to visit LA and New York and visit some if my own Hollywood childhood idols. Thank you for doing this for those who can't go where you've been.

Jack Benny made sure Anderson was well taken care of. He had great respect for him, and if a hotel wouldn't let him stay there, Benny would go elsewhere.
