A very good recording of a likely connecting rod “rap”. Increasing motor speed slightly, with the noise disappearing, only to return when slightly decreasing engine speed is a reliable confirmation. The low volume of oil recovered is a good tip as to why a rod bearing would fail...and letting a battery box corrode this much shows extreme neglect. I only watched as far as the next step of looking at the valve rockers....will go,back and watch the rest of the vid soon. Hope it all goes well.
OH MY GOD THAT BATTERY CORROSION! That base impreza rumble doe. Cool vid as usual man! I don't look forward to any of this work on the WRX in a few years!
its definitely a rod knock. It sure wasnt caused by the wipers, maybe all that battery corrosion must of triggered it. haha........ once again, another cool vid. funny too.
hey good video my question: would it be ok to loosen the crank bolt by putting the standard transmission into say 3rd gear and pressing brake then breaker bar by hand loosen bolt?
I hope you went ahead and got you a rebuild kit before you sign one of them connecting rods casing only know through experience I drive the same exact Subaru
Why can't they simply have a removable inspection plate to check the timing? I've gone through the same thing on Audis too. 99 Audi A8 Quattro I picked up non running with no DTCs (aka CEL codes). After checking CPS, and fuel pressure, pulled the valve covers and found left side out of time (timing marks on cams are internal not external). So after new belt kit installed it started right up. New timing belts on subies are a PITA to put on since they're so tight. Typically previous installers put them in wrong and cross thread one of the pulley bolts. Have had to helicoil one of those too. VW and BMW are infamous for plastic water pump impellers failing too. ;)
I’m doing my timing belt job on my 2007 sti and the driver side cam shafts don’t line up but the left side is timed perfectly. The ride side is off and when I try to rotate them clockwise I eventually feel good resistance and feel like if I push hard or push it I might bend valves. Please help how can I fix the driver side cams so I can get them lined up and then I can finally belt on the new belt?
hey dude I changed the timing belt, water pump, pulleys, tensioners on my impreza 2006 and now its making a whining sound..alternator ,ac and steering wheel pump are okay..btw the belt is not original and in the subaru service they told me its whining because of that.. helpp
Ya they skipped all the trouble they had getting the timing belt on with all pulleys on. I don't know if it's possible without a new tensioner pulley. Let me know if it is please. I don't seem to have enuff belt between the timing lines to get it all together without the belt stretching and pulling off the timing marks.
@@BlakesGarage thanks to your video I learned the oil on top of the tensioner pin was not a good nice oiling to keep it moving lol. It's not supposed to leak oil at all!! So I'ma buy a while timing belt kit. Thanks again!!!
Sound like need a new engine. Such as a rebuilt new engine completely. I heard that 2.5L always have problem. I am glad that I will never purchase a 2.5L at all. I love my 2016 WRX 2.0L better. I hope your friend fix that problem.
how often is the headlight fluid changed out on that generation Subi? My wife's Outback would make that same knocking noise. We brought it to a shop and they said it was due to old headlight fluid.
my legacy makes this same knock/rattling noise did everything you tried in this video even switched to 10w30 oil and it still there if you do find out what it was please make an update video!
Haha did Kevin tell you I was in Truckee the same weekend? We were all gunna meet up but he said the engine was knocking and was going to be a longer day than planned.
Sounds like rod knock to me :( Mine ate a rod bearing last year, was making the same noise and got worse and worse then died on my way home from getting it checked out. Luckily our local Subaru guru only lives a couple blocks away. Still cost me a pretty penny :(
I don't know what sort of engine he has or anything. Not so great with that stuff. But I got a full jdm swap for my bugeye wrx, labor and all, for just under $3k. Hope it gets all figured out! Sorry to hear!:(
ok... because i'm working on my 2008 subaru impreza with the same problem but i found the hydraulic tensioner fucked up... do you remember how you guys fixed the knock noise?
I wanna say this is a good video but it doesn't show hardly any details on actually fixing anything. Just 3 guys and a camera. I still have lots of questions.
you should have removed the bottom gear, put the belt on then put the gear back on,even I know that. I cringed when I saw you pry the belts off,I hope you replaced them. You should have also replaced the seals behind the gears. Your valves are eather out of adjustment or you have toasted lifters. With the lack of oil in it,Im betting damaged lifters, cams. Sell that turd, trade it in,just get rid of it. I have been through it fellas, believe me,yhat sound wont go away. Subaru's are known to sound rattley on start up when cold,Its something you have to eather live with,or get rid of it. Being that the rattle went away after warming up, its a lifter adjustment, and really, they all do a certain ammount of that. Its the nature of the beast. it really is.
+Blake's Garage I had the same problem years ago with a car,try as I might,I couldnt get that rod to let go. I had bought another motor for it and my intent was to blow it up before I swapped the motor. It was a 360 or something like that,I couldnt get that motor to go no matter how badly I hammered on it. It ended up as scrap, and I put a jeep motor in it that ran forever.
+Kyle Kelsey Yeah we were thinking about putting something thick in it to see if it will quite up. Kevin and I didn't realize that the thing was completely out of oil until we popped the hood for this video.
That red thing is not for shoe horning the belt. Its a gauge to set the gap for the metal belt sheild. +/- 1mm.

+T-WRX It's the worst I have ever seen.
main thing I was trying to get help with and you didn't show it... getting the belt on the last cog :(
its definitely a rod knock. It sure wasnt caused by the wipers, maybe all that battery corrosion must of triggered it. haha........ once again, another cool vid. funny too.
+bry954rr Wipers are good, So yeah the corrosion could have been the cause LOL.
Great video, and good luck with that Impreza. Love your videos. It would be awesome if you did a video on how to paint your headlight housings.
It definitely has something to do with the windshield wipers. DEFINITELY!
+George PS Mouyios Also is beer thirty. Don't forget to check the blinkers. Though it must be the wipers :)
loved the transition music but i do agree it was about twice as loud.
Thanks for the video. Should you replace the cam and crankshaft seals?
hey good video my question: would it be ok to loosen the crank bolt by putting the standard transmission into say 3rd gear and pressing brake then breaker bar by hand loosen bolt?
No problem, you can also wedge the flywheel from the inspection hole at the top or the bottom of the flywheel.
Plugged muffler bearing is causing the knock. LOL
Going to install rear subframe insert bushings soon. Thanx for install vid!
+ketchupdnb Dude you right that muffler is super rusty.
Great informative video I really liked it, sounds like rod knock to me, you should do an update video if you do dig further into it.
+David Mudrik Seems like its rod knock it just sitting for now.
I hope you went ahead and got you a rebuild kit before you sign one of them connecting rods casing only know through experience I drive the same exact Subaru
Totally didnt show how you put the new belt on.
Clean up that battery corrosion 😃
The one thing I came to see was how to remove the timing tensioner and the one part you skipped thanks.
did you have to jack up the car to get the valve cover off? Thanks.

that battery corrosion XD
Lol, doing my timing belt replacement in south lake tahoe this weekend.. :)

You can reused it but if you go through all the effort you should replace it with new to be safe.

Service your car regular and check your oil once a week
love the quality and sum of the details. subbed
+Dave Lee Thanks Dave!

How did y’all start it without the ignition?
Pull coil fuse. Itll still crank but not fire
how often is the headlight fluid changed out on that generation Subi? My wife's Outback would make that same knocking noise. We brought it to a shop and they said it was due to old headlight fluid.
+dsonyay Usually around 6K miles. If you don't change it the lights get way dimmer and the knocking starts!
+Blake's Garage cool, thanks. It would be nice for this stuff to be in the owner's manual. Guess they only want the dealers to know this.
dsonyay Yep thats why they charge extra for the replacement and its cash only for the refill.
Great video
By adding that fluid in much like seafoam, thats def. a lifter noise
Nah it was rod knock
my legacy makes this same knock/rattling noise did everything you tried in this video even switched to 10w30 oil and it still there if you do find out what it was please make an update video!
+Josh Ansin I will do an update video if we dive into it more. For now its mostly sitting in the Subaru driveway.
How much does it cost to replace the timing belt? I’m having the same problem with my 09 Impreza
Rod knock its over, you need a enginge rebuild or a donor motor.
did you check the blinker fluid lol good video tho...
Problem with the lifters??
Are these guys for real? It needs taking out and rebuilding, rod knock all day long.
Rod knock!!
Haha did Kevin tell you I was in Truckee the same weekend? We were all gunna meet up but he said the engine was knocking and was going to be a longer day than planned.
+stupidchicken03 You should have meet up with us, But we left by about 5 though.
+Blake's Garage I think we left around 2 on Sat
I wonder if the knock ever got fixed?
Yeah sold the car bought a new one lol had rod knock for sure. Not worth fixing
@@BlakesGarage rip car. Thanks for responding to my question and posting the original video. 😁👍

+David Kopp Yep it seems like rod knock due to lack of oil. Its not going to be a cheep fix.

You might consider putting the year of the vehicle in the title.
Sounds like the same problem I had, was timing belt tensioner
com quantos mil kilometros ou milhas preciso trocar a correia, o esticador e a valvula termostatica ?????
No subarus tipo 80 mil miles nao sei em km Abraco
how you guys got the Ac belt loose?
+Agustin Gil I think we cut it.
so how did you put the new one back?
Agustin Gil I can't remember I think a screwdriver.
ok... because i'm working on my 2008 subaru impreza with the same problem but i found the hydraulic tensioner fucked up... do you remember how you guys fixed the knock noise?
+Agustin Gil car had rod knock no oil in the engine.
Not really detailed on how you removed the drive belts or harmonic balancer....
Cut the belts with a knife. Take the harmonic balancer off by removing the bolts. Pretty straightforward
I wanna say this is a good video but it doesn't show hardly any details on actually fixing anything. Just 3 guys and a camera. I still have lots of questions.
That engine knocked,
Can we turn down the klezmer music a little?
It was ran with out oil and wiped out a rod bearing
Dope.

its most definatly rod knock

It needs a short block... I see it all the time...
+UnderAchievr LP Yep Bummer!
Bad rod nock🙊
my wrx had the same knock then it died
+morpheus6d9 Seems like rod knock. He is not driving it anymore.
Is he going to do a swap
morpheus6d9 probably not. I will let you guys know if anything becomes of it.
put rotella 15w40 in it.
