- Many fans have asked, "Why did the Boston Bruins trade Ullmark before they signed Jeremy Swayman?"
In this video, I will do my best to answer those questions because the answer seems more apparent since the latest 32 Thoughts in the Podcast.
Jeremy Swayman's contract is dragging, leaving us to blame Don Sweeny and the Boston Bruins for the delay. It got me thinking about what it would have looked like if they hadn't traded Linus Ullmark.
I think the answer is clear. After you watch the video, please let me know if you think the Bruins have no choice but to trade Linus Ullmark?
Check out all Bruins Diehards videos to stay up to date on everything surrounding the Boston Bruins. I will cover everything about the Bruins and your favourite players like David Pastrnak, Jeremy Swayman, Charlie McAvoy, Elias Lindholm, Trent Frederic, and so much more.

Do you think the Bruins had a choice when it came to trading Linus Ullmark?
yes
They really had no choice
Yup
I didn't consider or even realize Ullmark could modify his no trade list on July 1st, so it makes sense why time was of the essence for Sweeney and the B's desperately wanted/needed a 1st round pick in the draft with the huge holes Bergeron/Krejci left and a rather dismal prospect pool. I was just expecting to be the Sens 7th pick instead of 25th, but I guess the fact Ullmark didn't have a new deal in place was the road block there. Hoping for the best with Letourneau and Boston has this uncanny way of finding the diamonds in the rough...Pasta was 25th overall, Bergeron and Krejci were 2nd round and some guy named Brad went in the 3rd.
I 100% agree
Now it all makes sense. I noticed that Swayman was playing better and even that Ullmark seemed to be feeling some sort of inner stress that was hurting him. I feel for this whole organization at this point. I feel for Sweeney who doesn't deserve the hate, and I feel for all our players who are under all this pressure while we wait on Swayman. In the end we need to realize Jeremy needs to be happy to play well and we have been through tough times before. However, the point I want to make is it has been 13 years since we won the Stanley Cup and now we need to use the correct 4 lines to get there again. The new guys Tufte/Jones/Z/Lindholm and Tyler Johnson could help us a lot. A little quote for the Bruins from a great songwriter we lost in 2014 "There Is No Road To Happiness Happiness Is The Road."
I agree they need to get back to focus on hockey again. I do think a lot of this has to fall on Bruins management though. They let go to arbitration last year, let try to trade Ullmark at the deadline, they didn't sign Swayman last season when he wanted a 5x5
@@bruinsdiehards You sir are a noble and correct Bruins and hockey fan. Swayman should be signed and the management have failed numerous players. I never want to see what arbitration did to Sway and Frrederic happen again and the black and gold boys need to know who their teammates are this season!
I feel like the Bruins have lost all the leverage in their dealings with Swayman now that Ullmark has been traded. Take a look at Sorokin’s numbers so far in his career and you will see that he and Swayman mirror each other. The Islanders just inked Sorokin to an 8 year 8.25 million per year. Perhaps the Bruins can do a bridge contract of 4 years at 7.5 - 8 million per year. I don’t know how management could be so shortsighted on this. We could end up going from the best twosome in the NHL to mediocre at best, which will happen if they piss Swayman off.
@@patrickwheeling3694 Patrick you said it and I can't think of a better team to compare us to than Sorokin and The Islanders. Even Bo Horvat can't help them and yes I am worried that we may either only get in the playoffs as a wild card and lose or- gasp miss them for the first time in ages. This is a sad time to be a Bruins fan. All we can do is pray now.
@@benmitchner2172 What questions me is that I have no clue who will backup Swayman this season.
Ullmark's ill-timed play behind the net sealed his fate. Don't know what the hell they're doing with Swayman, but they couldn't wait to unload Linus
@@louscannon7493 once they decided to move him at the deadline there was no going back
Have to throw it back a number of decades to when Montreal ridded of both Worsely & Vachon in favor of Dryden. All are hall of famers, but although the same couldn't be the same with Ullmark & Swayman, the had A Solid Tandem of goaltending. Now is the biggest question- who is to backup Swayman & what is that guy's either skills, or, money is He worth???
Very good question and hopefully we get an answer soon
@@bruinsdiehards Thanks. I guess we'll have to wait & see,..
Outstanding explanation.
The July 1st deadline was looming & it had to be done.
Perhaps Bs are counting on & spoiled by loyalty contracts?
I still want ullmark back next season! (Doubtful but that's my version of "fantasy hockey")
Great podcast.
👍
The days of players taking bug discounts in Boston left when Pastrnak signed his deal.
@@bruinsdiehards very true - and Pasta's contract was still a good deal! He could've gotten $12.5-$13 AAV. (Shorter contract)
It looks like the latest thing players are doing is going for job security- getting their contracts to take them to 36 years old so they don't have to do a 35+ "ole man" contract?
I said this last year; 1. alternate starts in the playoffs the same way you did in the regular season. 2. offer to pay both ullmark and swayman 10 million combined and let the two of them decide how they want to split it up. If they are truly buddies like they claimed it should be a easy signing
With a Vezina under his belt, Ullmark's next deal would be well over 5 million per season plus the cap is going up
I think they valued the first round pick, which also explains why they were willing to take a goaltender back…
I have under good authority that they had a deal in place that would have seen them get Jacob Chychrun instead of Kestelic and Korpislo but Ullmark and Ottawa couldn’t come to terms on an extension. Sure they value the first round pick but we would of seen a lot different deal if an extension had been signed
Clearly Ullmark was not cooperating with the Bruins trading him. Did I read that they had a good deal with the Kings, Ullmark refused. Then the teams that wanted him got their goalie in other trades. There was really not many teams looking for Ullmark by July. The first round pick was great, having to pay Korpisalis is not good, especially for 3 more years. As far as Swayman contract impasse goes, I’m backing the Bruins in not paying over $7.5 million. I have no source to confirm any numbers but from reports, I’d let Swayman sit it out. As mentioned by other comments, Bruins defense lifts the goalie play, so Korpisalis may perform much better than last season. What do you think about the Swayman impasse? I’m curious?
Yeah, the Bruins had no choice but to choose Ullmark. I was in the camp that Swayman was asking too much, but more and more, I still think he is asking too much, but the Bruins are offering too little. I’m working on something right now for Monday to answer the question “How did we get here?” Sweeney and co need to shoulder some of the blame fans continue to put on Swayman because I feel this all started last year when the Bruins failed to sign the long term deal and let it go to arbitration
Makes sense to move him when they did.. but at the same time with that thought, Why didn't they have Swayman's agent in talks almost from the time they were eliminated from the playoffs and get the deal done BEFORE the trade. Make that signing the priority. Now, Swayman is asking for the moon and they will have to live with Korpisalo... who can be a good goalie at times but he's been behind poor teams.. so in Boston, he might just have a good year.
Yeah I have no clue and that is why I blame I blame the Bruins for this whole mess
You're assuming Swayman would have signed that quickly. He seems focused on doing right by other goaltenders and not the Bruins. With his agent's history in contract negotiations, I don't think you can blame the Bruins entirely for this one.
@@stevepwood nope.. I don't blame sweeny at this point. RFA's should be talking and not looking at the moon... unless you want to sit out. As a Sabres fan... he's perfectly welcome to sit out the rest of his life for all I care... though sadly, Korpisalo has had his moments and I hope for his sake he suddenly has it click this year just to stick it to the holdout.
I think Sweeney's mismanagement has brought us to where we are today. The trade return for Ullmark was pitiful. Korpasalo never should have been a part of the deal. From past dealings with Swayman, they had to have known he was going to be looking for a pay day. I think I probably said this before, I would have traded Swayman. In a Swayman trade the Bruins would have received a much bigger bounty or players and picks. Not that would know what to do with draft pick, the way he has squandered them in the past. But here is the real truth about the goaltender situation. Ullmark is not going to be the Vezna Trophy in Ottawa. The Bruins defense scheme makes the goaltender look a lot better than they actually are. This has been the Bruins hallmark for at least 20 years. The Marchand and Bergeron line was never supposed to be a scoring line. Their main job for the last 12 years was to shutdown the opposing teams top line. That's how special that line was and for many years led the team in scoring. I am getting sidetracked, but thats the style of the Bruins, defense first, what ever it takes, and that helps the goaltending immensely. On another note, letting Debrusk walk and not getting anything in return, is another blunder by Sweeney. He should have been traded at the trade deadline to get something in return.
Disclaimer: 12 Years and 20 years are figurative not literal for those who have the insatiable need to correct the comment.
I get corrected all the time so I would never.
I’m literally doing a “Why aren't we blaming Sweeney” video next. I agree some of the blame needs to be put on the GM yet so many are going after the players
@@bruinsdiehards That comment wasn't meant for you, it was for all the correct Nancy's out there. Ha Ha.
Trading Ullmark isn’t the issue the meager return for doing so is. The Bruins own 25th overall, a goalie with some of the worst stats in the league, and a 5th round prospect. If we’re to believe Friedman that he has a 16 team no trade clause I find it hard to believe 16 teams couldn’t offer better than 25th overall especially when they still had a year on his contract to do so.
Well, it would all depend on if those teams needed a goalie. A lot players will put teams on their list knowing they won't get traded there
Plus it's just one year. For a better return, you'd want to have the guy locked up for more than one year.
Honestly I got so tired of explaining this and a lot of other reasons that Ullmark was traded when he was. A lot of people don't want to listen to anything or anyone. They just want to place the blame where they want and think they know better than anyone.
Like every other year, the season will start and before you know it everyone will be on to something else to complain about.
I wish this wasn't true but you’re right
I miss Ullmark...he should of never been traded.
I think the trade was enviable
I'm sorry Ullmark might finish his career in a dumpster fire Senators. They just have nothing to show for whatsoever.
Will see if he signs first
@@bruinsdiehards for his sake he better not. I would love for someone like him to win a cup sometime but I have no faith in Ottawa to accomplish that.
Sweeney has been on the losing end on quite a ew trades in his short career, upper management is a big part of their success and or failure. financial reasons were the reason behind the decision
Well almost all trades of this type are for financial reasons in the cap era.
The AAV on Ullmarks contract was significantly lower than Korpisalos
Ullmark is 5 and Korpisalo is 4
After the trade (where Ottawa kept 1M of Korposolo's salary), it's 5M for Ullmark and 3M for Korposolo. I'm guessing that 2M is going to Swayman and a deal doesn't get done without it.
People say they traded ullmark for cap space, but then picked up kopisoli for almost the same price.
I understand the ullmark is on the final year of his contract and Boston wasn’t going to keep him, and they wanted to get a good return.
Swayman is the future of the bruins goaltending wise.
I wish they would have worked a better deal, but i believe sweeny wanted that higher pick.
From my understanding, they had a totally different deal on the table with Ottawa if Ullmark signed an extension.
@@bruinsdiehards so sounds like ullmark wanted to stick it to the bruins. I heard he just bought a house in Ottawa area. I think he will sign an extension with Ottawa.
@@soup31314 if he does that would be hilarious as the Bruins would have gotten a bigger package if he had signed an extension
@@bruinsdiehards i know from the interviews he was not happy about the trade block around the deadline.
Sweeney played it so wrong but hind sight is 20/20
