@d_inkz for many years, I would've argued against this point; but since women still insist we be the only ones touching the toilet, I have also decided that is the only equitable resolution
You could also use the logic that since 75% of the toilet use requires the seat to be done (in a household with a man and a woman, where I assume that the man doest poo standing up...), then it's more logical to keep it down.
But none of that actually takes into account the fact that to be hygienic, you need to flush with the lid shut, and you should really flush after each use, so everyone should be closing the lid after use.

Here's the malicious compliance approach - Put the seat up, pee, then put the seat AND the lid down. Now they have to lift the lid. There's at least some amount of seat repetitions happening for both parties.
It’s not malicious unless you neglect to flush. Assuming you flush (which you should), putting the lid down is the hygienic option.

As someone with pets that would absolutely drink from the toilet if the lid gets left up, it becomes habit to put the seat and lid back down afterwards regardless of where they started.

If I use the restroom and my hubby needs to go after me, I put the seat up for him and if he is quick, I put it back down before I wash my hands lol he appreciates it either way 😂😂😂 We always get a laugh about it. He always brings me a cup of coffee in the morning before he sits down with his (I get him his coffee if I get mine first) and we open the bathroom door and turn on the light of one of us needs to wash our hands and I always bring his pillow out to the couch when I grab mine when we are relaxing. The little things really do count and make things extra sweet.
If you want to make it fair. Agree on always leaving the lid down because leaving the lid up when flushing could lead to bacterial and viral transmission.

In my house both the seat and the cover go down after any toilet use.
This is exactly my take on it but my solution is always put the lid down. This is additionally beneficial if you don't want to dust the room with aerosolised faecal matter.

I lived in a house with 4 girls during college. I tried to have this conversation but I was clearly outnumbered. The only logical choice is to just let it be but noooo they might “fall in” or something. Try pointing out that maybe they should look at the toilet before just sitting on it but again nope it is my responsibility like I’m king of the fucking toilet or something.
Counter arguement: sometimes you go pee in the middle of the night, you're still half asleep and you don't wanna turn on the light 'cause it would be too bright and would wake you up all the way. And then you plundge straight into the oh-so-cold toilet waters, which is arguably one of the worst ways to be jolted fully awake, all because someone was too lazy to sit to pee, which has always been an option. I rest my case.

That sounds like you think sitting to pee is less lazy than standing and likely having had to put up the seat because the odds say it would be down. I am a man and there is only one reason I pee sitting down…when I’m taking a shit. It is actually lazier than any other option to not check to see if the seat is down since turning the light on AND falling in the toilet would sufficiently wake you up. You don’t even need to turn the light on to check. *mic drop*

If you leave the seat down including the lid so everyone has to lift either one or both parts for their needs, that's one motion each, and THEN, if the seat has an air piston in it so that it slowly lowers itself without any sort of circuitry or motor that needs electricity and could fail, then that removes the second motion for everyone and keeps it equal.
I think seeing the clean water is fine however, and think both parts fully open is a better default position, as in the rare circumstance when you get sick or have some sort of issue, it being open is going to save you where the cover being down could mean disaster that will completely undo even months worth of having it the way you wanted prior.

As a man, you don't have to sit on your piss covered toilet bowl if you try to pee in the dark at night. That's where it differs. I have done this countless times in a house full of men, and they have done this zero. It's also the worst feeling and experience ever. So I believe thay men should put the toilet seat down as that's the default position for everyone.

I have dogs and a cat. If the toilet isn't in use seat and lid are down. Also the cat likes to look out the window over the toilet.

So what are you saying? She goes and then puts the seat up so when you go it's already up. And then you go and put it down for when she goes next? If so what happens if she goes, puts the seat up after the deed, and then has to go again before you go. Then she has to put it down, do the deed and then put it back up. That's 2 reps for her. It works the other way around too if you go twice before she goes. Other than this, I think it's a good idea in theory. 😆
To be honest I'm a sit and pee kinda guy, because my mom would get pissed (no pun intended) when there was pee on the seat. So she drilled it into my brain to just sit and pee. Much more clean and comfy too.
Men don't HAVE to have the seat up to pee. They CAN sit! So NO IT'S NOT FAIR!
Plus, men have almost everything easy in life when it comes to peeing and no periods a day no birthing, so the least they can do is put the seat down. In my house growing up men were trained to sit out of respect.
