- This is the line-up, hold, takeoff and climbout of Delta Air Lines' final DC-9 flight - ever - DAL9944 to Charlotte. You'll see the penultimate one, DAL9960, depart off the parallel (26L) just before we are cleared for takeoff. The extended climbout and long left turn to the northeast are included. Turn up your speakers and enjoy the JT8Ds for the last time.
I haven’t seen a steep takeoff like this one in a while.. brilliant!
It could climb even better I recall, and the nowadays planes are way more noisy . Dc9 was more comfortable and beautiful
My thoughts exactly
Bloody hell, that climb!
I was on that flight and it felt like a roller coaster
@@nolantherailfan5048 no you weren't
that climb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NASA
I love those engines. Loud and proud. No wussy quite engines mandated by the EU. And what a climb! Did the captain put that plane at a 45 degree angle going up? I wish I was on that flight. This video is worthy of my take off hall of fame. Any chance you have the entire flight?
That's just reminded me of a DC-9 flight out of Oslo's old Fornebu airport. I recall that being very steep as well.
That bird just jumped into the air
@@arretium miss those Awesome JT8DS,
what a climb out it brings tears to my eyes
+TEDDY DUANE Me too ,I will miss the Diesel 9s for sure ,and those loud takeoffs from those JT8D-17s.
Upon final takeoff, the last commercial DC-9 standing turned into a space shuttle and was launched into the stars forever. Legends say it still orbits earth to this day, instead of meeting its demise at a scrapping yard.
Lol
I never knew there was a need for aviation fan-fiction until now! Sign me up for more!
My first flight as a kid was on a Northwest DC-9-10 for short 20min flight from Saginaw to Detroit in the late 90s. I sat in the back seat next to my Dad with that same view. I instantly went from being nervous kid afraid to fly, to being absolutely hooked on aviation. That 30+ year old little DC-9 took off like a rocket, and I’ll never forget that beautiful engine noise. Thanks for posting
Could have been the same plane, as Northwest was bought by Delta... Funny thing is, it could be the same plane I flew in when I was a kid in the early eighties when it had "North Central Airlines" colors (and the duck) painted on it, later becoming "Republic Airlines" which merged with Northwest in 1987....
I remember as a kid flying home from Disney with my Family and I was lucky to have a seat exactly next to the engine outside. I will always hold the DC9 dear to me.
The DC-9 was one of the sleekest and most beautiful jetliners ever built. I flew on a lot of Delta DC-9s growing up, flying back and forth from Indy to W. Palm Beach FL. These birds could climb! I always loved sitting in the back to hear that awesome JT8D music, the whine and harmonics from each engine oscillating then syncing up; what an incredible sound. This really brings back memories. Thanks for the post.
I rode a DC-9 from SF to LA in the early 80's. It was like riding a rocket, beautiful plane and the most steep takeoff I've ever felt to this day.
The DC-9 is a legend in the world of commercial aviation.
I grew up next to two Southern Airways DC-9 captains who later moved on to bigger birds (later Southern merged with Republic, who merged with Northwest of course). This brings back a lot of memories! Somewhere packed away I still have my 1:72 scale Southern Airways DC-9 display model one of them gave me.
I loved those old DC-9s. There is nothing else like them.
LOVED the take-off roll and the climb out.....
Breath taking climb!
Thanks for the upload. Certainly miss seeing DC9-30s growing up near Standiford Field in Louisville, 70s, 80s. Delta, Eastern, Trans World, Ozark, USAir (Allegheny), even New York Air. Taking my family on trips via DC9s will always be a cherished fond memories.
wow! she may be old, but she's FAST!! this is great, what a treat to be on the last one, and you had the BEST seat!! thx for posting!
Awesome video! Thank you for sharing this with us. I haven't flown on a jetliner since 1969, but this is how I remember it!
The plane was scrapped in January of this year, brings a sad tear to my eye.. such a beauty of a bird.
That news makes me want to vomit!
That's some steep climb, it's why i love the DC-9's so much.
That CLIMB THO!
Awesome! Love the steep takeoff and the A380 at 2:33
Outstanding! When SAS had DC-9 and free seating on domestik routes in Norway I always picked a seat by one of the engines.
That was a very good choice I also done that many times the song that engine made my flight much more enjoyable and if I wanted to take a nap it put me to sleep
This was the first aircraft type that I traveled as a child, between Trinidad and Tobago, domestic, never 4get those take offs and fabulous loudness
The DC-9 is the pinnacle of aviation!
Great video of a awesome airplane!! I remember back in 1966 when Hawaiian airlines got their first DC9
and i got to fly on it from the island of Kauai back to Honolulu, thanks for the memories!!
DC-9's will be missed in my opinion.
Very good aircraft.
Unfortunately we have to move on. I don't really like the change to the very silent engines, having almost no noise onboard makes it feel so fake.
Like being in an electric car.boooring!
Give me a dirty, smokey loud Convair 880 or 727 over today's twins.
I loved the sound of the 727
the 'Turkey Roast' -- THE most dangerous firehazard in the air (or on the ground j/k)
@@philmontejano5971 I want jets to be eco friendly but still sound cool
Fantastic video loved the sound on take off! Thank you for filming and posting
Great video. How luck you were to have experienced he final flight of this stalwart of the aviation world.
Some of my most memorable flights were on the DC-9 and the 727. I would always sit right by the engine. That sound was music to my ears. Being needs to return those aircraft to production. I read an article some time ago that the off-lease MD-80 and 90 series are some of the most sought after aircraft in the secondary market. Some things never go out of style.
Thanks for posting this video.
My first DC-9 flight was on Eastern in 1969. My last was July 2000 on Air Tran. The airlines where I flew on -9s the most during my travel history were Austrian, Republic, KLM, Southern, Eastern, and JAT. Great aircraft.
BEAUTIFUL climb!
Great video.
Thanks for posting.
So glad we have one of these on our school
Beauty sound, when taking off
great footage wow so long dc9 we will miss you....
Miss that plane so bad :( LOVED the DC9
I do too. I remember flying on these with Northwest.
I miss Northwest
damn what are u doing here man
Looks like a very steep climb in the begining!
That was one very steep climb!!!!!!!!!
Pretty steep climb for a DC-9! Very Nice!
I remember seeing the front of those engines on Northwest's DC-9s and thought the engine wasn't running. I was maybe 7 or 8 at the time, but I had my mom tell a flight attendant not knowing that just covers the turbines.
i had love-hate relationship with this plane :-D narrow isles, not enough seats and getting the dreaded seat right next to the engines was what i dreaded the most! but she took off quick and neat seeing the back door that will not find on other commercial aircraft :-)
Freakin' amazing takeoff!
Holy fucking shit that climb out!
Those sweet JT8DS
Amazing climb
Reminds me of how "Muse Air" use to take off when they were around, always straight up.
Love the sound of those engines
2:32 what a steep climb out
Unbelievable. I flew in a DC9 before, super quiet inside, loud on the outside!
Well, up front. The back of a DC-9 is earrape. And that's the MD-88 (DC9-88) I flew.
The 111s twin brother! Perhaps the healthiest and fittest member of the Glam Rock family!
The only time I've flown was from ORF to DTW (and back) on a Northwest DC-9 both ways. I did notice how steep the climbs were.
Was there a g-force on takeoff
The DC-9 is the pinnacle of aviation.
Hey for being recorded 7 years ago, this is pretty good camera quality
That was a rocket takeoff! :)
Holy the climb
That was one steep climb. Closest thing to a rocket I'm sure.
Worked in the DC-9 as a crew, strong equipment. Miss the engine noise!
Lot of memories
I was definitely not ready for that climb
Oh. Now I can see all of the md80s!
Very nice.
More than few years ago I few Dc 9 either NW or Delta. Can't really remember but I do recall how long it took to get to 24k and how loud it was.
love those two hot rod 57's. big twins and tall legs
ROCKETING TAKEOFF! ;-) LOVE IT!
Very sad day, all Delta DC-9s are gone now. Dang, that climb!
“If you look to your right you will see our airline’s final DC-9 flight taking off from the runway.”
My first flight was on a Northwest DC-9 In 2008, I’m now training to be a pilot, hopefully for Delta airlines. Very bummed I’ll never get a chance to fly this plane.
I can't believe the acceleration from stand still!
I keep the link to this video handy just to listen to the JT8Ds.
i like the sound when wanna take off
Rapid accent....nice video....JT8Ds fabulous...
Wow! That thing takes off like a rocket haha
That was a fine selection of company jets to see the old lady off
They must be at hartsfield jackson international airport
DC-9, doing “Rocket” take offs before anyone else.
I believe this plane is/was kept on the ramp at the aviation museum, it may have been since scrapped, I remember hearing something about the engines being salvaged but I’m curious if the whole plane was destroyed.
Whoa, that take off angle !
Holy shit that’s a steep climb
Great..
Hell yes!!!
I'm pretty sure this was not a derated thrust takeoff like pretty much all commercial flights are. Pilots sent her full tilt for her final flight it seems, very rapid acceleration and fast to rotation for a commercial jet.
I was ticked off when I found out that they ended up scrapping N779NC last year at Charlotte.
I miss the JT8s......great sound. The compressor whine always reminded me of a very loud hair dryer......
fly a md80 then ;)
@@MD80phreak Yea it's the 2nd gen of the dc9 so something at least take one while you can I nust did.
The fan is running. Those are guide vanes forward of the fan.
that was a very step takeoff
Yeaaaaa!
Oh my, I used to fly a lot on DC-9s back when I was a kid, that engine roar as they throttle up to take off power did bring back some good memories.
One just can't argue about the advantages of the new-gen airliners, those new A320neo are comfy as heck, but those ultra-silent engines make them sound as a toy beside this.
DC 9 the king of the climb....✈✈
I’ve always heard that some pilots call the DC-9 “the rocket“ and now I understand why… 🤣
Wow, that was steep. Is that typical for the DC-9?
Are they supposed to go almost vertical? I always used to push the yoke slightly down whenever I flew the MD-80 in X-Plane.
Boi no surprise why they chose the shuttle cockpit for that thing. It really does climb like a rocket
Super mega rocket 🚀 take off.. uaoooo
Great video!Nice channel! 5ubscribed
how did you manage to get a seat on a ferry flight
I miss the noisy stinky jets of yesteryear....flying was a thrill back then...and they all looked much more graceful than the hybrid generic looking airbuses of today
That’s a lot of deltas. Is this Hartsfield Jackson?
Doesn't quite sound like the MD80's engines....oh my Gah that's a steep take off!
''Turn up your speakers and enjoy the JT8Ds for the last time.''
MD80 also uses JT8D but newer version
Was that competing with the space shuttle?? I thought the 757 was the climb king!!
