It's all about going fast. AskMen sat down with team Mazda and got to see first hand how a racecar driver thinks. We spoke to teammates Joel Miller and Tristan Nunez about fear, racing, and the zone, and got to see them in action at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Our interviews took us through more twists and turns than the famous Mazda Raceway corkscrew, and we got to know a little bit more about the men behind the cars. So buckle up and get ready for a ride.

im 20 years old. all ive ever wanted to do was race. drag race, auto cross, rally, i love cars. i love being behind the wheel.
but myself and my family have never had the funds to let me be a professional driver, nor have i ever had the connections.
i really dont want to become one of those middle aged guys with a rusting, aging modified or sprint car sitting in the back yard though.
hopefully one day i guess.

I'm a 16 year old race car driver from Pennsylvania. I am a micro sprint racer. I get nothing handed to me, I work my ass off for everything, I find ways to cut costs to put that money into racing, I do my own work on the car and I find my own sponsorship. And I'm told by so many older and professional drivers that you have to keep digging. No matter what, never give up and just keep digging. So if I have one piece of advice, it is just that. Keep digging and never give up, and you'll get there, my friend. Also I recommend checking out the RUclips channel Enzo mucci, he has a show called the race driver coach show, and it has taught me so much about how to do things in racing.
I just turned 19, going to college to be an automotive designer, and I'll use that money to get something going. For me it all started with gran turismo. Those pro racers have every dream car they wanted, we're all gonna get there, just find ways to make it work,
I have everything but money, but i wont let that stop me from becoming what i want. It's like i NEED to be a race car driver, its what im good at

Been drag racing since I was 8 years old and it is my passion. I am pursuing racing professionally. One day I hope to make it versus racing as a hobby. I have what it takes, won many championships and now it's time for the real battle to start.
For everyone who wants to race and think they got it, it takes a lot more than nailing the throttle to be a championship driver, but never give up!

yea why not. For driving a rally car you must be 16 but there is not many people who start at that age because you need driving licence and racing licence and that takes some time.
WaffeSquad dude 17 is perfect age to start.You must be at least 16 to start racing with rally car so 17 is not too late.

For me it all started off as making car noises with my toy trucks, to watching racing movies, to getting my car and taking it for a spin on open and free roads,to drag racing.

My dream is to become a world rally driver or a gte pro wec driver but after seeing all the coments of people being so nice I'm encouraged as never before! I know that racing is always going to be my number one thing! I feel that i would never be able to do anything else. As an amateur, licensed race driver, this stuff is true. It's a workout. When I take off my helmet and nomex suit after a race, I'm DRENCHED in sweat. I'm in good physical shape too. This sport isn't for the lazy and dumb. It takes reflexes and split-second decision-making. I don't know if I'd want to be a team driver, as there's a ton of pressure on you, on top of all the work you have to do to for your own physical health, let alone all the seat time and learning so many race tracks.
I've always wanted to try my hand at the real thing ever since I got into Forza Horizon and just recently Gran Turismo Sport.

Jack dekock it's LeMans actually, Rolex is just a massive racing sponsor due to the sheer amount of riches inside of racing. But best of luck to you, there is nothing like going 180 mph down a track and then whipping around a corner accelerating back up to that speed almost instantly. Racing is a truly special sport, don't let anyone stop you.

30 on the 22nd of july and i am still trying to get into it.. i would honestly love to go to the gym all the time and race... i ended up getting a driving job driving all the new cars just to drive and i was getting paid for it... a bonus...... i love driving its the best thing i look forward to every day...

Very few people really understand motorsport. The average person thinks because they drive from A to B for 20 years that somehow they know what they're talking about and dismiss motorsport people as crazy but they really have no idea how little they know and how childish it is to just dismiss it as crazy when they have no idea what they're talking about.
Fuck yeah dude. I play a lot of racing sim games and those can be tough. Real racing is definitely on a whole other difficulty level from that. Real racers are incredible.

don't let that stop you! i started at 8 years old and it is very cheap to get into and if like in my case you show dedication and win lots of championships that might be enough to get you into the big leagues
My childhood dream when I was 14. I always wanted to be one. When I was 17, I got the chance to go into amateur competitive go karting at my local indoor track racing against older amateur enthusiasts who personally drive S2k, 350z, 370z, STi, GT86, M3 E92, C63 AMG sedan, S4 B8, MX5, G37 etc. I did okay but wanted to do better.
I am 22 now. Still this is my dream profession and hobby.
It's just my wife that wont let me.
If I did not marry early, I would be out shooting for my dream to race in GT3.

+Pedro Antunes always work hard and it doesnt matter what people says if that s what you really want you need to follow that dream, in racing you will need not only the money but also the actitudes and the aptitudes to get it and lots of trainning, sometimes you think its easy to be in the track but the reality is a way big different
+Pedro Antunes Me too, Only I am From UK, I do sim racing at the min, and got a seat for international kart team. I wish you the best of luck pedro, and if you work hard, you will make it, But there will be alot of negativity on your journey.

Logy Tube they grow up in the area where there is racing, they go to school to race, they get super good, they get recognized and sponsored, they race for free and get paid
for me, my dad has been racing since the 70's and i got into it very young and started racing when i was 8 and showed lots of dedication which got me many championships and enough to keep moving up the ranks. If you are 8-18 in drag racing it is cheap to start out!
@McKenna Bold you say cheap but to a 17 year old working as a lifeguard making minimum wage it is unreachable. I made $2,000 this summer and I worked a LOT of hours. With school, my dad not really willing to spend money, the little money I have, it's pretty much impossible. How am I supposed to get into drag racing and continue racing with only $2,000?. I have a miata but that spec is so competitive a dude like me with no training has no chance against 40 year old dudes who've been racing for 20-30 years. It's been my dream and I'd still like to believe but honestly the only way to make it is to be born into it.
I watched this at the age 14 and I had absolutely nothing... Now I'm age 20 and I have indeed become a race driver. No I'm not rich, so stop with the excuses.
