  • This request goes out to my friend Barbara. She asked me to do the Carpenters especially Karens voice to someone I don't know at all, Tori Holub. Her question was what I thought of Tori's voice and was it close to Karen's. The answer is that her voice is spot on! The only difference is you can tell the Carpenters version was done in the 70's and Tori's is now. Fantastic cover, I need to hear more. Thank you Barbara!

Hello Jeff, it's Barbara I am so glad you played this remarkable cover of " We've Only Just Begun " by the Carpenter's & then the cover by Tori Holub, the production of Tori's cover was amazing. Now I have thinking what you could cover next. Well one of the greatest ever Roy Orbinson who was taken so young 6th Dec 1988, he sang " Crying " I have just heard such a remarkable cover of this song by K. D. Lang whos is a Canadian singer, she was on stage live at a tribute concert at the Universal Ampitheater in Los Angeles California 24 Feb 1990, this cover has to be the best cover of this song that has ever been made. Take care Barbara.

Although the version by The Carpenters wasn't technically the first of the full song, it isn't really correct to call it a cover.

Muskrat Love was Captain and Tenielle. My idea of goofy Carpenter's song was Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft. Is Tori Karen 2.0...not yet. But then again, Tori is 20, recording in her basement on best buy equipment. Give her a couple a years. Also, we have the iconic record burned into our brains. If it always sounded EXACTLY the same in concert, then Karen was lip syncing.

Ha! Agreed, everybody burns out at some point.
I will admit if no one is listening Calling Occupants was one on my favorite in Highschool.

Barbara has great taste. Karen had one of those once in a generation voices. The cover was very good. You can hear they were trying for a tribute cover. Tori has a beautiful voice. To compare to Karen the only difference I noticed was Karen had that bit of vocal fry that added sultry. Recently I have come across Leonid and Friends who did a cover of Superstar. A nice cover. Vocally spot on, but the instruments were altered. ruclips.net/video/JhWrggrJ20Ih/видео.htmlttps://ruclips.net/video/JhWrggrJ20I/видео.html There is even a comparison vid. out with side by side vocals. Interesting Nice one Jeff, aren't you getting close to our bedtime?🤠

I was disappointed by the sound quality of the "original" version -- it made the production sound crude, which it probably wasn't. The video taken from the television performance also has poor quality sound. James Wilkas's production sounds so much better!

Hello Jeff, so sorry to contact you this way on RUclips but I find it is the best way for me. It's Barbara again, I have been watching a new artist on new RUclips which may be of interest to you, his name is Elliot James Reay, he is 21years old, born in Manchester UK now lives in Melbourne Australia. he styles himself as a bit of a crooner, he sings Elvis, Roy Orbinson, Righteous Brothers, Sinatra, all this type of music, well he sings a cover of Eric Clapton song Wonderful Tonight. he is starting to get a few reactors playing his music. He may be useful to your channel which I love, Take care Barbara.

Hi I’m surprised you didn’t use the iconic Carpenters video, with Karen sitting in the letter U. It doesn’t get struck. Eduard2004 used it to do a side by side mash up. Really shows the accuracy of Jim’s craftsmanship. Then there’s Tori’s voice. She’s not Karen, she’s Tori. That’s her voice, it’s damn close but no two voices are identical nor can you sing the same way twice in a row or at all. The point should be, she is capable of singing those songs and doing them justice. She has a library of covered as shorts and some fully original songs written for her. She writes too and is a multi-instrumentalist.
Last night, as I write this, Tori met Richard Carpenter face to face. He was the SURPRISE guest at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration. He was NOT on the agenda. The photo is on Tori’s socials. They’ve met electronically before. It was a secret until her recent interview. Tori sang two songs for the Acoustic Night event. I recorded it and published it. If you like a live voice and piano, the songs were “Something In Your Eyes” the song Karen died before recording. And “Yesterday Once More.” I had to shoot vertical to keep the heads in front of me from blocking. For what it is, it’s OK, a little raw but I shot it in 4K so maybe choose a lower resolution so it doesn’t stutter.
FYI Dusty Springfield originally sang Something In Your Eyes with Richard.

@@Anothercoverlover62 not sure if you’d like to react to this or not. Tori wasn’t happy with the audio quality from the official recording at the church. (Mine wasn’t great either, boomy) So she went into her studio and re-recorded it. Using a clean piano track from Drew Jansen, the pianist who accompanied her. She basically made the Carpenters version that’s never existed. It’s reaction worthy if you agree. This is Produced by Tori, by herself. Her talent is endless.

Like you, I had no love for The Carpenters in "the olden days". They weren't rock'n'roll. I recall a neighbor who would only let her kids listen to groups like the Carpenters because all those Rock bands just spent the money from their sales on drugs, which is ironic if you know some more about The Carpenters, also because it made me more interested in drugs. I'm better able to appreciate the talent these days, but can't say it's music I would seek out. Talent in the cover too, but can't say they moved me or inspired me with any innovation. No disrespect to anyone, it's my loss.
For the nerdy types out there, youtuber Wings of Pegasus very recently did an analytical comparison of Karen and Tori on this very song. Ears struggle to find differences but computers confirm small differences.

Yeah a lot of the groups and artists especially the “good” were in addiction sex etc. but they hid it well.

Know all about the Carpenters. They seemed to be played a lot more once you got out of the Vail Valley. Vail had 1 station at the time KVMT which everyone called Kvomit. So any decent music coming through the radio came about 1/2 way to Denver, that’s when music from the likes of the carpenters would pop up. Also one Tv station to those who couldn’t afford cable back then. However cable back then didn’t have much more to watch. So anyway watched the Karen Carpenter story and realized knew a few of their songs. Some must have made it through the one Am radio speaker. The first thing I noticed about them was their laying of music. Not as complicated layering as abba, my closet group back then. I have to say if the Tori popped up on the radio I don’t believe I would’ve known it wasn’t Karen. Well I at started listening about 5 this morning and no coffee yet. Non of this rambling may make sense. Good dark and looks maybe gray Sunday morning to you and all. Happy blessed day. Take care.

Btw one of the few pop groups I loved from era was ABBA
Now that I don’t care what my peers think, and I’m a grown ass man, I have a lot on my Spotify.
I can appreciate the Carpenters now but still don’t have affinity the sound
And if your watching at 5 am, welcome to the club!!

    She sounds like karen..
But she's rusing the song...slow it down a little..we can't expect her to sound exactly like karen...no one can sound ecactly like someone else .it's impossible...and unfair to think otherwise...she can only get close..if you think you can do better ..then do
