    Hi A-Aron! My ears were burning, I heard my name mentioned. I’m Joe and Tori was introduced to me last October by the miracle that is Algorithms. It’s been a ride ever since. I got to see Tori live a week or so ago at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration. As a matter of fact, at the end of the video the slide that popped up was my video I recorded of Tori live. The thumbnail has a picture of Tori in her red gown singing and her meeting Richard Carpenter for the first time. Richard surprised the whole group on the last night. He was great being interviewed by Chris May (who Tori shouted out in the 3 minute video!) his co-author, along with Mike Cidoni Lennox of “Carpenters: The Musical Legacy.” More about Chris, that short video is now about two years old, a much younger Tori if you noticed the hair color 🧐. When she shouted out Chris, she did not know that he would in about a year’s time would produce her cover of Georgia On My Mind! And no, she sounds NOTHING like Ray Charles! Andy mentioned her newest single which she I believe now, shot a music video for. Right after the 55th she stayed in L.A. and we saw pictures of her on a green screen set. She a young rabbit hole and she’s only just begun! Well done reaction! Oh and in his defense, side by side and there is a mash up video, Jim does a pretty good Richard. Besides being a genius for putting this all together!
    One last thing. The Wings of Pegasus channel, Fil, analyzed Tori and this song. No autotune, no pitch correction natural singing! Guess who requested that one! 😊
    Joe

Lisa Budin an Australian singer who also performed that night. Said Tori was the voice of the night! This from a lady who has sold out the Sidney Opera House on numerous occasions! Yeah! The first time I heard Tori cover this song, I was absolutely blown away. She sounds so much like Karen that I had to listen for tiny differences just to make sure it wasn't really her. I think the only real difference is that she doesn't quite have Karen's lower register, and this would become more obvious if she covered a song like Superstar. But Tori's voice is amazing on its own behalf, and she is the best vocalist I have heard in decades.

    • @jbs256

      Karen had The Basement. Tori is a few steps down the staircase to that. But! She can go high enough to cover Olivia and Karen never could go that high. So that is each unique and gifted.

    Thanks Aron for your informative and insightful comments. I told you this was something special. Tori doesn't do just this song of course. She covers other carpenter songs, currently in short TikTok versions. But there will be a new one coming shortly. She also covers other artists and has released an original not too long ago. She is not trying to be Karen Carpenter for as she says herself, Karen Carpenter is irreplaceable. Her natural voice does sound a great deal Iike Karen but there are differences at times. The thing is if I walked into a room with my eyes closed I would think I'm listening to the Carpenters. What they do here is magic! Tori really does this as a tribute to that legendary duo. Jim Wilkas is her collaborator and producer in this performance. By the way, Jim and Tori live in different parts of the country which is why they have produced this remotely as a collage.
    Thanks again for putting this together and I am sure I'll have more for you going forward. Peace out.

    i got to hear a story about the beginning of the Carpenters from a friend at work he was engineer who also was a singer and got a week long gig at Lake Tahoe and took his backup band, a pianist and drummer after the week he realised he had less money then when he got there so when he got back to LA he decided to stick to being a well paid engineer and took his backup band to his brother in law who worked at one of the many music studios in LA and introduced the brother and sister backup band to him and the rest is history.

      Akiko Kobayashi is fairly good, but nowhere near as good as Tori Holub. Maybe it's because English was not her native language, but Tori rules. Tori can't go as low a pitch as Karen Carpenter could but as Tori's voice further matures with time, this may evolve. Actually, you wouldn't want it too deep either. Anne Murray's pitch was a little too low on some notes and couldn't sing that high. Tori can sing Olivia Newton John's high notes and other notes better than Olivia in my opinion.

    Really enjoyed that you played the second video. I don't have to explain to you, as I do with most other reactors, that she has a lot of chops, technically, using the Pro Tools sequencer. Heck, not even mentioning she has a TASCAM multitrack deck. Oh yeah, and she sings too. She's brilliant. Oh, what you may NOT know is that she does covers of many other artists, one of which is Olivia Newton-John, who sings in a higher range than Karen. On that cover, Tori affects a breathier, airier timbre, which is amazing.

    I'm going to state that I am a big Angelina Jordan fan who started listening to your channel because of your reactions to her. That being said, before Angelina came along, Karen Carpenter was my favorite female vocalist and I have probably all their albums. Yes, most on vinyl and some on CD. You mentioned about the collaboration they did to put this performance together. I will say that the original Carpenters were one of the first groups to do this type of production. If you look at the credits on any of their albums you will find almost all of the vocals including the backups are performed by Karen and Richard. They of course had backup singers and instrumentalist when they performed live, but on their studio recordings they would start with just Richard on the piano and Karen singing the lead. They would then go back and keep recording over it with backup harmonies and add the other instrumentals. I've always loved Richard's arrangements and wish he could work with Angelina today, but I know he like me is getting pretty long in the tooth to be starting off with an 18 year old. All this being said, while I like all your reactions, I feel you do a much better job with Angelina because you have studied jazz and understand a lot of the background she has picked up by emulating the greats of the jazz world that came before her. I am not asking you to not do other artist, but I do think you should focus more on Angelina that any other because of your background in the music sector. One of the main reasons I point this out is because Angelina has so much content to get through, it's going to take a lot of time to catch up to where she is today. Peace and Love and hope all's well.

      Thanks so much. To be clear, by this type of mashup, I meant more of the electronic (remote) mashup of videos like that. Yeah I probably would have never done this but received a paid request to react to this specifically and when someone takes the time and money out like I feel it's a requirement to respond and do it. That said, I definitely should have listened right beforehand and would have had a fresh basis of comparison. Even though with Angelina, yes I know the genre and artists better, I listen to some of the other artists right before doing the reaction to have some basis / comparison in mind. I really appreciate you and everything you shared. The Carpenters were never really a group I followed much. Not because I didn't like them but just because I didn't lol. It's not even the era nor the style of music...for some reason never dug deep specifically with this group and there is no real reason for it

    • @briank10101
      @briank10101 2 месяца назад

      I always wondered why when the Carpenters were live on the road that they didn't have 1 or 2 female backing vocalists to better replicate the studio sound. I recall ABBA would have at least 2 female backing vocalists when live, and that's with 2 females already in the group. A Carpenters song could have at least 12 Karen overdubs, so at least an extra female voice or two on the road would have helped, or maybe Karen didn't want it.

    The original record has been burned in our brains, but it is good to remember that Karen sounded "different" every time she sang the song...The positioning of the orchestra, the acoustics of the room and maybe slight vocal irritations. Unless there are shenanigans, there are differences. Tori is close enough for "covernment" work. In March, she dropped a brand NEW "Carpenters" song and a vid is coming soon...It is really "Something To Believe In."
