MAONO AU-903 is a cardioid condenser mic and one of the few PC/MAC mics with a USB-C connection that allows a direction connection to your smartphone. Is this a worthy Blue Yeti Nano competitor? Let's find out...

Hey! I created a NEW channel dedicated to CAMERA gear content! I want to keep this channel focused more on tech, so please check out ruclips.net/channel/UCoq8rCYrb74b6N1z303H5KA ! - Thanks for visiting! :)
does it have hissing sound? because i saw other videos then they some are saying that it has hissing sound.
4:35 I didn't even notice you switched the mic until I looked at the screen
Haha I am terribly sorry if I misled you there
Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful and I love that you also compared the blue yeti one with the Maono AU-903 because I'm sat here with both of them as well! 😃👏
I really hope you like it
Thanks for your effort making this review!
My pleasure!
Thanks for this! Bought this for my Webinars together with my Macbook!
My thoughts are that the older model sounded a bit warmer but for overall quality/value they are a tie.
The Fairy would be a better option for people on the go as mentioned. No worries I gave a up vote :)
Blue yeti captures your voice more fully.
But first wise, it depends what you can afford
This is very helpful. Thank you!
sometimes stay silent so that we can hear the hiss sound how loud it is in both mic
exactly , there is some noise in it
Same! WHY. when I plug my headphones into my computer I dont hear this white noise. It only happens when my headphones are plugged into the mic. Please help.
@@KevinKwok1234 That must be some hardware issue which cannot be fixed,
@JSyntax, thanks much for this. I've been watching your previous videos as well. I like the sound of HyperX Quadcast best but decided to buy MAONO Fairy AU-903 after watching this video. In Thailand it is 3 times cheaper than HyperX Quadcast so I feel it is the best value mic. Not to mention volume knob and USB C feature which is not present in HyperX. Thanks again you helped me a lot.
Usb c for life! Love a modern connection that can be reused for phones.
@@JSyntax do you know if it works with Smule (karaoke app) without needing any additional equipment? This would be perfect if we can hear music and our own voice singing at the same time. I am not aware of any mic that can do this.
I'm checking prices on Shopee now, and the Blue Yeti Nano is double this mic, so I'm probably about to hit the buy button for the Maono! Did you get a pop filter, too? Can you share your purchasing experience with me?
How are you doing with the microphone?
In the video I see that @JSyntax is very close to the microphone so that it is heard well, even to the point of being in a very uncomfortable position when recording videos, I understand that this is because it has little profit to not generate white noise. However, I have seen reviews of the Hyperx Quadcast where they speak at a greater distance, there is no noise and it sounds great.
Could you tell us how you use the microphone, if it is as close as @JSyntax or is moving away to be in a comfortable position?
@@AlejandroRamirez-ko5gd I think both microphones are good even at a far distance you just wont to get that nice Bass sound effect
Thanks for your effort and the video.
I just watched and listened to it using my HD599.
The 903 has aweful background noise during speaking into it.
Neither to hear on the 401 nor the Yeti Nano.
Though you could fix that in post it's a bummer 'cause the audio wouldn't be usable for more professional purposes without being edited first.
In general the mic seems to be pretty decent.
Take care and have a great Christmas time.
Yeah noticed this too. And it's very noticeable on other YT reviews as well. Considering that you wanna use the Fairy on-the-go, you don't wanna be bothered with post processing. Has to be plug and play without that terrible noise.
how was it compared to pm401?
Couldn't have smashed the like button harder. Thanks! Good stuff.
Tha k you!
Great video!! To be honest for the price this mic sounds great.
I understand the compact size but The 401 has less noise much clearer with quieter headroom.
you my friend know how to make a GREAT review . and i mean every single word maono could use this on their official website lol
That is kind of you
Looks absolutely great...:)(: Soft view.
I use this mic for Voice Over and I looooooooove it so much
By this you mean the 903 model?
@@ramgopal.sharma yaaa
How much was it
Excellent review. Subscribed you for your complete review style!!!
Thank you!
Thanks for the review. Have a few questions. 1) What's the height measurement from the base up to the microphone? 2) can the height still be adjustable? If yes, up to what measurement? 3) Just in case you had a chance to try it out, how does this compare to the Maono A04 series or the Boya PM700?
Thanks for sharing. I'm planninh to buy this 903. 😁
Wish I can try both at my area, it's hard to get a better feel which is more comfortable to use between the 903 and 401
Is there a way around the slightly audible hissing noise in the cardioid pattern?
that is also my problem. that could be a factory defect
Very helpful. Thanks very much
Price in India?
Can I buy from Amazon?
The mic is good overall, the problem is that it has a loud hissing sound when you connect it on a headphone. It also hiss a little bit on your recording.
Turn the gain lower maybe?
@@JSyntax Where should we set the gain adjustment? Below 50% or below 25%?
didnt hear any on this test
The hiss on this video was really noticeable to me, especially switching between mics, only this one seemed to hiss.
@@dtucny I couldn't hear it
i have the same mic bro and it's good enough for my gaming sessions , good and cheap
Probably a silly question, but does the live feedback function (i.e. listening to your recording live with headphones) work when using the mic plugged into a mobile phone? Or only when plugged into a PC?
I have this Mic and it works perfect with LInux also
Can i unscrew this mic and put it on a boom arm ??
This review is amazing! Im buying Maono 903
Right on!
It really works on smartphone?
This is the only review so far that I've seen (as of 24th May, 2020) with zero dislikes!
Thank you so much for the kind words
Would u recommend this mic for song covers?:)
****PLEASE HELP**** I notice on Amazon they don’t have the 903, all I am seeing is the 902. Do you think this will work still? I like the smartphone USB capability that you showed in this video, can’t find the 903 anywhere. Only the 902. Should I get the 902? Is it pretty much similar?
MAONO AU-903 excelente microfono
Can I connect it directly to a sound card
FINALLY A MIC THAT WORKS WITH MY USB C COMPUTER!
I know right
Lemme guess; using a Macbook? Don't worry, we all share your struggles.
Neelesh Reddi nope HP Spectre but yeah ur right
Do you think this is better than fifine k669b?
Does it have backround noise cancellation?
Just bought this mic but for some reason it really won't work with my android despite me using a type c cable for both of them, anyone else having this type of issue? P.S it works fine for PC tho
Thank you so much I was so confused because I opened it wrong so then I opened it how you did and then I found the cord in a tiny ox thank you so much I was about to cry🙏😂🤣
Yay!
Looks like the amazon link above is for the AU-902 which is different from the item featured in the video. I couldn't find the AU-903 in the Amazon US shop as well. It is available though from the Amazon India and Amazon UK sites.
If you go on to the 902 it has an option to change model and then click the 903
Check the silence. I think 903 has hiss sound which is audible even in this video if one try to hear it. I bought and found the hissing sound is even more in the monitoring socket even with volume at zero. The other odd thing is, maino site specifies it as 96Khz/24bit bit I found it uses a c-media chip with 48.1khxz/16bit only.
Ya I barely notice it though
wow..this is a promising one! If my assumption is correct, this kind of condenser mic with variable polar pattern is for those like me with "untreated" home studios? Also, does this hog too much battery from your smartphone if you plug the mic to your phone?
Yes it is great for untreated rooms
Hello i connected it to my samsung mobile but it does not work. Please how do i connect i to my phone.
How to removed hissing noise from this mic?
Can we attach the 903 to a mic boom / mic stand? Thanks! Great content!
What adapters and wires do u need to connnect to Samsung S20 .. i cant connect it and they didnt give me extra wire?.
Mine too. What converter should we get?
Is it possible to record a video with voice on the smartphone when the mic is connected to the smartphone?
is this mic best for singing videos ?
I think both maono almost sound the same. 😊
Yes they are very similar I agree with you Fred
Thanks for the awesome review. How far away from me can the mic be and still pick my voice? I will use my laptop to record myself. I will stand in front of a screen and I don't want the mic to be seen in the video. I can have the mic hanging from the ceiling.
I would not go more than four feet from the microphone if you do it will start to Echo a lot and become very tinny
@@JSyntax Thank you very much for your reply. I appreciate it.
Sounds nice! Have you tried the 902 version? Which mic would you recommend for recording songs?
I think both are good for music
Hello, can you suggest a compatible microphone shock mount with this mic:
mine didnt include a type c to micro usb chord. Is there a chord that i can buy?
Microphone is enough? To connect to our mobile phone? Or we need any external source to connect to our mobile phone
Can I use it on a iPad? Is it good for singing? I love the quality
The link in the description isn’t the same mic as in the video
It didn’t work when I plugged it into my iPhone any suggestions?
THE AU 903 PICKS UP A LOT OF NOISE!!!
Yikes! Need to lower my gain then. My bad.
What happens when you connect the microphone to Samsung galaxy and it's not working?
I am looking to buy a mic for story narration and i am on a very tight budget can you recommend any ?????
Is this mic good for singing?? Plz reply sir
Can I use this for singing?
Does this work with iphones?
I'm also using an adapter to connect to android but it doesn't work
Could I also use this usb microphone with my iPhone 11 or iPad? If so do you know what adapter I would use? Also could I attach this to a regular boom mic stand?
Yep!
@@JSyntax Do you know what cables I would need to connect the iPhone 11 with a lightning jack?
Can you please make a video how to connect your phone to your mic?
thankyou for reviewing this, was looking for a good condenser mic for the first time, n I'm getting this one cause your review :)
Right on! Enjoy modern usb c
Is this good for ASMR?
Is this good for Fingerstyle guitar recording?
Yes
That's so inappropriate
Does it work with Apple
I'm trying now to connect my maono AU 903 to my phone thru type c to type c but its not working huhuhu. Please help me how I can connect my mic to my phone. Which connector I need plsss
Awesome & Thanks :)
I'm having issues with the USB C cable. the one that it comes with is too short. ordered another one, doesn't fit.
What's good for smule or starmaker for singing bro ?
hello, I have a samsung A32, if I turn it on my cell phone to do live on instagram, will it work? and will there be a better sound than my cell phone microphone?
Can you tell us where you found the USB-C cable male to male that fits with AU-903? Been searching for days.
I bought it! Do you know what a good arm stand option is?
There are no two chords.. only one chord of Micro USB C to USB A ....
Why did you lie... ?
Will purchasing a USB-C to lightning connector work on iphone?
Nice video, mate. That Fairy mic has a LOT of hiss in it. Might be bordering on unusable in a quiet room if there was just speaking voice only with no music to mask it. All the best.
I can't really notice they hiss or background noise maybe I had the game too high this is very shocking
JSyntax mate, the hiss is terrible. I’m sorry you didn’t realise this prior to buying it. Have a look at the review of that mic on the audio review channel Audio Hotline. You’ll clearly hear the hiss in that video. All the best.
The Business Firm he reviews the 902 though
@@thepickyaudiophile no he is reviewing the maono au903 not the au902 I accidentally ordered the 902 and i only realised it because the logo in the front and the switch at the back wasn't there.
Does this have a noise cancelling feature?
Is the BM800 Extension rod compatible to maono 903?🤔 I love the review
yes because the bm800 arm uses a 3/8 screw male
and it screws perfectly with maono since its uses 3/8 screw female
great video but sound the clicking the mechanic keyboard when you speak?
Nice video thanks
Which one is Stereo microphone...
Which one would you say is better for recording music? Like just vocals, acoustic guitar or in front of an amp in general?
Yes!
Naturally my voice is very low. Opposite listener used to complain on my low voice. Does it have internal amplifier? Can i use it to attend my meeting calls? Will it help?
Use voice boosting by post production modifications bro
it sounds good
useful video, keep it up
Is the 3.5 mm jack at the back only for monitoring the sound?
if you connect the mic to any device, the audio from that device can be relayed through the 3.5mm jack. If that was your question.
Hi. My maono fairy won't turn on by using usb c to usbc thru phone.
I tried to connect it with my iPad (using usbc to lightning..)... It doesn't work.. Anyone knows, please help. Thanks!
Which pop filter did u use for the 903 I'm trying to find a compatible one
Great, but the omnidirectional mode doesnt seem much better than a mobile mic.
Awesome video! May I ask what cord did you use to plug it into your mobile phone? I tried using its own cord plus a USB C port adapter but the mic wont turn on :/ thank you so much!
Hmm, what phone are you using?
@@JSyntax Woah thank you for getting back to me. I'm using Realme 6Pro. It has a USB port C
Will this work in an OTG cord? I badly need answers. Thank youu
Yes it will
What recorder did you use here?
Hi I saw this video, really enjoyed it. I'm trying to connect it to a Pixel 4 but doesnt seem to recognize the mic. Do you have any app or recommendations to get the two working together? Thanks!!
Do you try open camera on play store ?
Did you use a USB OTG adapter to connect it to your phone?
