Another setting that makes a huge impact is the FoV Multiplier on Quest 3. I set FoV Multiplier to 0.8, 0,85 using the Oculus Tray Tool, and it improves performance by not rendering the pixels outside of what you can see through the lenses in the headset.
The OTT is a great tool and one I used a lot previously, however I didn’t for this as I found that the FoV multiplier wasn’t really providing me any additional benefits. However for PC’s with lesser GPU’s it’s 100% a great tool to use
I really suggest to increase the quest resolution instead increasing pixel density. PD is a supersampling process and it impacts performance really hard. There is a default instant action mission in Marianas for free flying de f-18 use that mission to benchmark. Use f2 and focus the view in the f16 park at the hangars and try to achieve stable 72 fps. Another tip is to lower LOD Switch factor to 0.4, this will affect distant detail of units (the carrier to) but that will give you massive performance. Another trick is to mix full quest resolution with 1.1 or 1.2 PD in-game and 0.4 LOD Switch factor but take into account the performance hit.

What DCS version is this? I got a framed limiter in there, which I would highly recommend using. Your frames are jittery in my opinion, I usually try to 'flatline' the frame times to stabilize the system. Better a stable 75 FPS than a jittery 90 in my opinion. But then again, everyone has to find their sweet spot.
I’m actually going to be recording a new video on DCS in VR this week as it’s been a fair while since the last one I dropped. I chose to change it in game because then I am editing visual settings in one app over two
@@Yorickkinda I've used max resolution on quest app, dlss quality, but lovering FOV stencils in Oculus debug tool. This way i'm getting almost stable 72fps in singleplayer, but have some drops in multiplayer. Will try your settings, but i fear that mfd's would be unreadable. Besides, textures on high works for most modules, but newer ones like Ah64 or f15e suffers from fps drops when i set textures high, so i run on them on medium, and ground on high :)
Thank you so much for this, pure gold. i did all the things with openxr and blablabla-tools, no good picture. but your guide is phenomenal, especially the stuff in the nvidia-control panel. i have a quest 3, a 7800x3d, 64gb ram and a 4090 and i‘ve set the ingame pd to 1.6 and it‘s fluid and not stuttering at all and i maxed out all textures and preload without any stutters. i also set dlss to ultra performance for helos and quality for planes. works like a charm. very nice, i was about to sell my quest 3 bc it didn‘t match my expectations. thanks. 👍🏻
Great! I am glad it helped! The nvidia control panel stuff is really what makes a huge different, I think the pre rendered frames really helps to smooth the game out and remove that god awful ghosting and stuttering you get otherwise
That is built into the game, I can’t remember the name of it, but it’s in the UI section, maybe performance monitoring? But yeah - it’s a built in feature. Default binding is CTRL + Pause I believe!
I use a 3080 and run the STeamVR Launcher with "--force_enable_VR --force_OpenXR". Why I can not see the DLSS setting yet I can for MSFS2020? I use both SteamVR BETA & DCS Public BETA. * I see now I must use Multi-Threaded Version to see DLSS.
Is 64GB a must for DCS now... I'm running basically the same CPU and a better GPU (RTX 4070TS) abait halved RAM size, and had been running into crashes when trying to load Caucasus map before even any additional addon intalled...
I have countless issues with my 4080Super with the beta. It says that my device is not suported and crashes. I can only use the vanilla version of the game.
It was asked but not answered. Are you using the DCS standalone version or Steam? If we are using steam, do any of your recommendations in the video apply to us (example, I dont see the DCS in the drop down box for NVidia Manage 3D settings. Should I add the DCS.exe in my steam subfolders and make your recommended changes? Thanks
I’m using standalone, and yeah - I would use the exe found in the steam folders. Also, when doing this, make sure in steam you’ve selected the open beta in the settings and are launching through the MT build (not oculus or steam VR) and then in the In-Game settings select enable VR Hope that helps!
I don't use VD unfortunately, I would love to so I can drop the wire, but I need to heavily invest in my network setup and I am not in a position where I can do that currently
Very helpful - with VR there always seems to be so many settings that it's really hard to know what to mess with. Going to try yours out later. I'm using Virtual Desktop - have you any experience with using that and if so how do you find it compared to wired?
Gave it a go just now and so much better than the settings I had before! I do notice that the MFD content is a bit hard to read - not sure if that's DLSS doing that or something else?
Sorry for the late reply! I have not used VD because my network isn’t really suitable for it, unfortunately the MFD’s do take a hit from the DLSS, however maxing our the sharpening does tend to help
I have a question for you, we share just about identical pc capabilities, mine might be a little stronger even, though I am using a Reverb G2. I followed all your settings advice, but now when in DCS with DLSS turned using open xr, I seem to be stuck fast at 23 fps any idea why this would be happening? Thank you for any advice, I appreciate your video.
Have you got a frame rate limiter applied anywhere? I know sometimes with certain headsets using the pre-rendered frames can effect the rendered frame rate, so maybe change that and see whether it is still happening?
I also have a 3080ti, but a lesser cpu I9-10900k and 64gb at 3200. If I push pixel density to 1.2 DCS crashes, even if all other settings are on low but its fine at 1.1. I'm not sure why this is if its a function of the GPU? Leaving it at 1.1 I pushed the clouds to ultra and the Q3 to 90hz which looks pretty good while the lower FPS gives me a headache and the clouds at high are pretty jagged. Any ideas on the PD?
Some settings do rely more on the CPU over the GPU, it's a weird quirk with VR. It's the only reason I have the CPU I have. I can pretty much use the same settings but using my 2070 super and get more or less the same exact experience visually
I put small, round pieces of thick, double stick tape on a few of my most critical keys so I can feel their location when my hand is on the keyboard. Still, I often have to peek under the old goggles to take a look at what I am doing in the real world, but doing so really doesn't bother me, unless I'm on short final. For me, wearing an HMD is comfortingly reminiscent of wearing flying goggles. The difference is my flying goggles, now hanging on the wall, did not weigh nearly as much as the Pimax HMD. However, this is offset by the cost of owing and operating a single airplane, versus owning a fleet of sim airplanes that can be spawned anywhere on the planet. How else can one fly a Grumman Goose or Boeing 314 in the middle of the South Pacific and still be home for dinner? Best of all is not having to deal with ongoing maintenance and mountains of FAA regulation paperwork. As for cost, consider that my entire sim setup, with a top of the line gaming computer and three different sims, along with their fleets of aircraft cost less than a green-tagged, Hamilton Standard propeller. What seems insanely expensive in the technical world, is insanely dirt cheap by aircraft standards. Unless maybe you're putting in a King Gold Crown panel, in which case one has the worst dollar cost of both worlds. As for glass cockpits, don't get me started.
Thank you for this. Really needed a simple yet effective way to setup the VR up. I have a question; I don't know why I am getting a waving feeling through my lenses. Is there anything I can do to stop that wave ? Thank you .
@dushanthap674 I honestly have no idea, is there any chance you can like record how it looks through the lens and send it to me so that I can troubleshoot it?
@@Yorickkinda Unfortunately i dont know how to record. Still new to VR. ITs ok, i will try to figure this out. Thank you for trying and replying Sir. Appreciate it
@dushanthap674 what headset are you using? I’d check the link cable speed if it’s a meta quest or Pico headset. If you’re using SteamVR, or if the game is launching into SteamVR, check to see if motion smoothing is being applied somewhere. Otherwise I’d think it could be a ASW issue and you may need to turn down a couple of in game graphical settings and see if that makes any changes
On my system (5800x3d,7800xt,Reverbg2) turning MT on gives me terrible studder. Starting the game in VR without MT works OK but I get no FSR option (it is gray out). I cannot find any workaround. The performance is ok with the F18 and just acceptabe with the Ah64...
You can only use FSR with multithreadeding unfortunately, you can try the OpenXR Toolkit, that can give you options to add in FSR without the use of MT
Hey quick question. I fly mostly online. When I take my Quest 3 off it goes into some kind of PAUSE mode that crashes the game. Is there some way to shut that off?
@@Yorickkinda Ok……I have no idea what any of that means. Got my set for Christmas, have been tinkering with it, but know NOTHING about VR. Climbing the learning curve
How do you run the game from the Oculus app? I have a quest 2 and I connect it to my computer with a USB. I open the Oculus app in my computer, I enable the quest link from my Oculus 2, I open my desktop, and from there, I open the game. All I achieve is to play the game having a huge screen in front on me. Can someone please tell me what am I missing to do so I can have the real VR experience?
@@Yorickkinda thanks man. Yes, I am being able to run it now directly from Steam VR, but for some reason, even though I configure to launch the MT version, it doesn't always happen. I notice that because in settings, the DLSS option is not always available. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Do you happen to know why?
Ive spent a lot of money on ''Virpil sticks/bases and control panels/Stream Deck/Tablets/Monitors'', spent a lot of time learning to configigure and use the Virpils/stream decks.............how do i use those if i downgrade to VR?
You bring up a good point, I have my bitrate set to 500, I’ve not messed around with the code side of things because I set it up like 2 or three years ago now
using these settings and dcs has never run so smoothly with a 4070super i7 12700kf however I notice within like .9nm the enemy plane just goes invisible and I cannot visually see them at all unless I click shift f10 even still I cant see the model unless we fly right past each other. Do you know how to solve this?
I know the issue, it’s a real pain in the arse - how to fix it, I am unsure - you tend to see what I can only describe as a black smudge in their general location. However there is a setting called ‘VR Zoom’ in the UI settings (you may need to hunt around) you can bind that to a button on your hotas and it’ll zoom similar to flat screen. It’s just super disconcerting in VR I find
Probably, yeah - my wireless network just isn’t up to snuff for wireless linking, so I never bother with it. I’d recommend something like a Stealth, Syntec or Kiwi cable over the meta specific one - as long as it’s 5Ghz you’re fine
I lowered my settings to as low as it gets and still get stuttering at the edges when I move my head and an average of 55fps. I have a 2070super, 32gb ram and a ryzen 7 3800x. Do you think my PC is just too weak or is something going wrong? Edit: Warthunder is running on 90fps at way higher graphics.
Right! So, I was able to get decent enough performance using the OpenXR Tool Kit and using a 1.1 PD, I'm going to make a new video outlining this (This was done on the same specs as you) The screens in the F-16 and other MFD planes aren't as clear and you need to lean in a little, but overall I was able to get a solid 72FPS
Anyone have a good video for hp reverb g2? I got a 3070ti but all the videos are for 4090s that I can find. Following the guides I am only getting 30-40 fps with it.
If you use the OpenXR Toolkit you can really get some good performance - if you follow roughly the same settings here and apply some foveated rendering with the toolkit you can get major performance boosts
thank you for the info sir. But unless I missed it, you made zero references to how you connected DCS to your headset. Did you use virtual desktop, a link cable, or air link? Those connections have graphic settings as well that could affect the VR visuals and frame rate.
You may want to drop a few settings down, and potentially use something like the OpenXR Toolkit, but generally speaking you should be able to get it to be smooooooooth
Your ipd is set to 52 which seems incredibly narrow? My personal ipd measurement is 67 in my prescription glasses. Does this setting have no effect on the visuals?
-I think you mean Mega Transfers not Hertz -most of the times DCS is saying "CPU Bound" in red that means you CPU can't keep up so you saying has enough headroom is a bit of an overstating. -Also having reduced settings all over the place is basically a mashup of random attempts to get FPS and loses any relevance as it is very hardware and perception dependent.
@@Yorickkinda in fact your RAM works at 2400MHz and 4800MT/s because it's DDR. People confuse this because the memory vendors like to "omit" these aspects because it's beneficial for their sales. For example my RAM works at 3200MHz and your RAM works at 4800MTs ... not everybody knows which one is faster.
DCS vr for me is unusable as far as dogfighting is concerned. I can get the cockpit to look great, but anything beyond my wingtips is a blurry, shimmering, semi-transparent mess. I can't distinguish any aircraft type until they are very close, like 300 meters/yards away. At 3/4 of a mile (1.2km) an aircraft appears as a perfect little black square!? I can get 45-90 fps, 5-10ms frametimes, but nothing so far makes any difference to the quality of other aircraft appearance. I've spent more than 30 hours trying different settings and guides over the past 6 months. I have : I9-11900k / 3080ti / 32mg 3600 ram / reverb G2 / 1tb ssd / open XR + toolkit Does anyone have any advice ? Thanks in advance.
This looks very cool. How is playing a flight sim in VR since you have even less feedback than normal of your body physically rolling or moving. Isn't it just disorienting and not fun?
@@Yorickkinda Gotcha. I have a very high tolerance for VR, but I can't help but feel that the physical disconnect between you and the plane would become dull to play
@@nateg876it’s the opposite for me. I have VirPil HOTAS that I’ve used for a few years and can easily find all buttons and switches without peaking. But it’s easy enough to peak under my headset if needed. I also have a trackball mouse near my left hand in order to manipulate cockpit controls. TBH, I don’t enjoy 2D gaming anymore.
Overall good video mate, but its little misleading. Flying high above or taxing in empty/bare airfields are not good indication of performance in vr. You started to have spikes and dips as soon as you hit the forest level or smoke or little busy areas. Anyone can run 72fps with much lower spec when there is nothing impactful around, especially in Caucasus. Try the same settings above any city in Syria map or Marinaras or even dense forest/factory areas of Caucasus map and I guarantee you wont even hit a stable 60, maybe 65. And thats the problem, when you are running anything below 72, anything "unstable" then you see stutters and everything looks shit even if your fps is 68 or 70, it doesnt matter. So Im sorry, no hate, I know you try to be helpful, but this is not a great guide mate. For example; you have to get rid of forest and structure details to zero, thats 10-15 fps right there. Also turn off cockpit illumination, thats another 2-3 fps and that setting does literally nothing. Ground shadows default to flat can give you up to 5fps especially in dense city areas. AND THE BIGGEST THING YOU CAN DO IS: fix the fps, I mean literally, fix it to a certain number, my prefered is 45fp, or you can do 60 if you lower more stuff. Use oculus dev tool to fix the fps to half with ASW disabled. This is the best thing you can do to get a "smooth" experience. Im sorry but what you have is not stable, I know its not because we have the exact same setup and settings lol. Anyway, again, no hate my dude, just some clarification...
Okay, but did they fix the part where the game still can't function in EVERY JET with fully functional motion controls ONLY? Cause that seems to be the biggest flop/barrier to entry for most PCVR users...including myself. Seeing what VTOL VR did makes DCS look dissapointing...to say the least.
Hi, is there any way to disconnect the Cursor from VR Head set. And only control it with the mouse? My cursor follows wherever i look and i have to be extremely precise.
Yeah, if you go to the VR tab in the game settings, underneath the pixel density slider is a checkbox for ‘Use Mouse’ if you pause at 07:38 you should see it
@Yorickkinda thanks a lot for your reply. Really appreciate it. I did that. I can use the mouse now but still when I move my head the Cursor also moves with the HMD. So it's double movement now.
@sahdinkhan1827 is this when flying? because I know when you look around it’s as if the cursor remains wherever you put it on screen but they you can move it independently once you’re looking at what you’re interested in. It’s super annoying and I wish it would go away
@Yorickkinda yup when flying, it's so difficult to input something on the UFC or DDI. Because i need to be so precise. My head moves a little and the cursor follows or if I look at a side to check something and entire thing is messed up. Unbelievably disturbing and sometimes even unplayable.

The nvidia control panel stuff is really what makes a huge different, I think the pre rendered frames really helps to smooth the game out and remove that god awful ghosting and stuttering you get otherwise
i actually set pd to 1.7 and it‘s even more clear and still no stuttering.
That’s awesome!
whats your setting debugtool for bitrate?
@MotorheadsRT 500
what is the app you used to monitor performance ? Thx .
Unable to select DLSS? I have a 3090 RTX and have tried to find other reasons, or explanations.
you need to start dcs in multithreading mode. Search on RUclips for tutorial
Also, when doing this, make sure in steam you’ve selected the open beta in the settings and are launching through the MT build (not oculus or steam VR) and then in the In-Game settings select enable VR
Hope that helps!
VR pre-rendered frames setting doesnt show up on my panel, anyone know what's up with me please? :c
Hi. Do you Virtual Desktop to play in VR. If so, what settings are you using in it. Thanks for the video. It helped
I don't use VD unfortunately, I would love to so I can drop the wire, but I need to heavily invest in my network setup and I am not in a position where I can do that currently
@@Yorickkinda ok. Thanks for the reply 👍
Thank you for the reply, all fps limits are turned off, I'll do some more deep digging and let you know if I find anything suspicious.
Stuck in flat screen cant able to see vr mode enabled it still no joy whete can i dee the dtep by step setting
I have the same isse.
Thank you for this. Really needed a simple yet effective way to setup the VR up. I have a question; I don't know why I am getting a waving feeling through my lenses. Is there anything I can do to stop that wave ? Thank you .
You might need to explain that one a little more for me, I’m not sure what you mean by waving
@@Yorickkinda Through the lens, the whole screen has like a water wave like effect. That's the best way i can explain.
If you use side quest to deactivate the prox sensor that resolves that issue, the headset will need to be in developer mode though
@@Yorickkinda Ok……I have no idea what any of that means. Got my set for Christmas, have been tinkering with it, but know NOTHING about VR. Climbing the learning curve
@simtaylor61 ah! If you type into RUclips “How to use sidequest for your quest 3 - there will be a tonne of tutorials on how to do it!
At the moment, the oculus app and DCS aren’t working together. Unsure why, however you can launch using SteamVR
@@alexargudin4606 I have a special shortcut on my taskbar for the DCSMT.exe this was the only way I could get around that
I haven't used my rift s for a few months, tried to use it yesterday, vr loads to the 15 year dcs screen. Then just goes off.
I used to get that after using SteamVR over Oculus, or trying to switch between headsets
I wound up having to uninstall everything and reinstalling it all to get it fixed
@Yorickkinda I'll uninstall oculus see if that works thanks for the reply
@@VELCRO666 no worries!
Ive spent a lot of money on ''Virpil sticks/bases and control panels/Stream Deck/Tablets/Monitors'', spent a lot of time learning to configigure and use the Virpils/stream decks.............how do i use those if i downgrade to VR?
Muscle memory is a beautiful thing
Yes you are getting used very Quick to it. Cause the Virpl is made for it to feel the Buttons euch is shappend diffrent
What bitrate and code you are using, do you use ODT?
@@Yorickkinda I was able to fix it! .4 lod made a world of difference
Thanks for this, clear and simple 🫡
Glad to have been of help!
are u using link cable or wifi for quest
Link, I don’t bother with wireless
@@Yorickkinda than thats probly why i get ghosting etc i should get a link cable, thank u.
Probably, yeah - my wireless network just isn’t up to snuff for wireless linking, so I never bother with it.
I’d recommend something like a Stealth, Syntec or Kiwi cable over the meta specific one - as long as it’s 5Ghz you’re fine
No! I tested on Pico 3 Link with and without cable, the same results.
I actually have a similar spec PC that I can use to test this out for you and get back to you!
Actually it’s identical
@@Yorickkinda that would be very kind bro
Right! So, I was able to get decent enough performance using the OpenXR Tool Kit and using a 1.1 PD, I'm going to make a new video outlining this (This was done on the same specs as you)
The screens in the F-16 and other MFD planes aren't as clear and you need to lean in a little, but overall I was able to get a solid 72FPS
are you on cable link with meta software?
Yes, I briefly went over my setup with the meta PC software at the start
Great Vid.. 👍Following your great guide, Rift s, 5690x 16gb 3200 , 3070, f16 free flight 80fps in vr. Thanks so much
Great to see!
I link, I am pretty sure I mention it as I go over the oculus desktop app
I have 2060 4800h asus tuf 15 16gb ram 6gb vram would i able to play as smooth as it is here.
You may want to drop a few settings down, and potentially use something like the OpenXR Toolkit, but generally speaking you should be able to get it to be smooooooooth
thanks for the tips, you should make beginers tutorials video for DCS with " fun no serious in mind"
I am sure I would be crucified by the community, but I’ll definitely consider it!
Would be nice to save this video to "watch later".
Thanks it looks great
Can anyone reccomend settings for a 5800X3D, ASUS ROG RTX 3090 STRIX, 32GB RAM (3600 CL14) and HP Reverb running on an SSD?
Just use these settings and tweek accordingly. You will not get your question answered any other way.
Your ipd is set to 52 which seems incredibly narrow? My personal ipd measurement is 67 in my prescription glasses. Does this setting have no effect on the visuals?
I have the IPD set to default because the setting in game only impacts the scale of cockpits in game.
I had no idea you played dcs
The title should say what video card you're tuning it for. My settings look nothing like yours for a 4090
He mentions his system specs early in the video.
You running MT?
MT is a requirement for DLSS, FSR etc.
How do you turn on MT in VR?@@Yorickkinda
@henoch44 you using Steam VR or regular?
-I think you mean Mega Transfers not Hertz
-most of the times DCS is saying "CPU Bound" in red that means you CPU can't keep up so you saying has enough headroom is a bit of an overstating.
-Also having reduced settings all over the place is basically a mashup of random attempts to get FPS and loses any relevance as it is very hardware and perception dependent.
Technically correct as a hertz is a measure of frequency, but as 1Hz is the same as one second, both MT/s and MHz are the same:
4800 MT/s = 4800 MHz
@@Yorickkinda in fact your RAM works at 2400MHz and 4800MT/s because it's DDR.
People confuse this because the memory vendors like to "omit" these aspects because it's beneficial for their sales.
For example my RAM works at 3200MHz and your RAM works at 4800MTs ... not everybody knows which one is faster.
3090, 11900KF, 32gb ram, m2 gen4
Runs like a dream
which vr u use?? i have the same gpu as yours, hows the quality?
@Patrik.Pereira I use a Quest 3, sometimes a Pico 4 and also a Rift S - really depends on how long I will be in VR for
@@Yorickkinda your favorite? For shorter sessions?
@Patrik.Pereira quest 3, by far - it’s lightweight and the pancake lenses really bring out the details in any game I player via link
@@Yorickkinda over the pico 4 uh, Interesting, thanx for the info buddy
I have : I9-11900k / 3080ti / 32mg 3600 ram / reverb G2 / 1tb ssd / open XR + toolkit
Does anyone have any advice ?
Thanks in advance.
That’s a yikes, ill have a think and see what I can come up with
This looks very cool. How is playing a flight sim in VR since you have even less feedback than normal of your body physically rolling or moving. Isn't it just disorienting and not fun?
Just like VR in general, if you’re susceptible to motion sickness, it’s something you need to get used too
@@Yorickkinda Gotcha. I have a very high tolerance for VR, but I can't help but feel that the physical disconnect between you and the plane would become dull to play
@@nateg876Not at all. Flight sims in VR are amazing if you have the specs to run them.
Thanks for the video
No problem!
Thank you for the comment, I appreciate the feedback so that I can do better in the future!
RIP open alphas...betas...all in one now.
Most jets can be flown fully with motion controls, it’s just unlike VTOL VR, the game isn’t designed from the ground up with motion controls in mind.
@sahdinkhan1827 yeah I try to bind as much as I can to the hotas to avoid needing to use my mouse because of that
