Attempting the Most Advanced VR Flight Sim - DCS World
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- DCS World is a very popular flight simulator in it's own right. DCS World in VR is just a VR version of the fully functioning simulator in virtual reality. And it is a beast of a game. I don't even think it's a game, there's not gameplay there's spending 5 minutes to turn on the engine. Whatever that is called, that's DCS world. It's cool, it was fun to try and fly a real plane in VR, but I cannot land a plane, I cannot start a plane, takeoff in a plane, nothing. So I hope you got a laugh out of it, or found it somewhat funny because I certainly didn't do anything cool... other than explode.

Congrats Habie!!! You deserve it. You are the only content creator I know so far that consistently wishes his viewers a good day and that "something good happens" to them. I started watching your channel in the middle of the pandemic (during some of the worst months as far as illness). I'm an ER doc in FL who also had to deal with some developmental difficulties with my son (he's gotten over most of them, thank G), and my wife coming down with a rare neurologic disorder. So, yeah, it has been a rough 2-3 yrs.
I've looked forward to your vids weekly and have found them all super entertaining. Heck, it's because of you that I started playing Onward and Saints & Sinners (like everyday for 1 yr). Now I still play Onward, not casually anymore, but on a League Team. It is my way of dealing with a lot of stress/PTSD/anxiety and insomnia. Your videos are more therapeutic than you think. Thanks for everything you do (for fun, I know) and connecting with so many strangers. You deserver all the credit your are receiving.
If ever you are on an Onward pub lobby and you see me (KidKneePNCH), holler back. Don't be surprised if I get star struck and geek out a bit.
(Disclaimer: Shamless plug www.twitch.tv/videos/1674963933 , I'm still learning)
this basically sums up my experience when i first tried out DCS in the mustang. it feels like training in a real life plane would be easier and less time consuming. was super satisfying when you actually get the plane running and take off without incident
Can you pull the throttle and flip the switches yourself or do you have to use the pointer?
@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer DCS is meant to be used with a hotas setup, you would very rarely need to use the pointer, and there's always another way or a keybind to allow you not to.
I have no idea why Habie even tried that, it would be just like using the pointers in a rally / racing game instead of a wheel.
@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer I last played it in flat mode (non VR). All full modules are fully interactable so flipping switched, pulling levers to choose angles or valve positions. It's an aviation wet dream honestly 🤣
It definitely would be easier to use a real plane at first, but once you pass the learning curve and memorize the keybinds and everything DCS is a perfect sim to practice in
@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer either the pointer or an axis/key you set in settings. The best way to start is to use an xbox controller or mouse and keyboard if you don't have one, and eventually to get a cheap throttle and stick.
It's kind of crazy how much easier it gets with a throttle and stick. I used mouse and keyboard for two years until I saved up for a warthog hotas, and it felt like everything as actually there to help you use the plane and not fight you.
If you're super into it but cant get a hotas(throttle and stick), try with mouse and keyboard and just take breaks when you get frustrated. If you don't care that much it might not be worth your time until you get a joystick at least
DCS requires an actual HOTAS to operate efficiently, you can't really fly with your VR controllers
Just wanna say Habie that I'm really happy for you that you won the award. The other nominees are all big in their own ways but I think you did deserve it. You have been blessing us smooth brains with such lovely content. And I hope you continue to do so for a long time to come

Habie is definitely the most self aware and down to earth smooth brain I've seen
I know imma seem like a nerd but I wanted to explain what was happening on take off.
As you could probably tell when you started to take off you began rolling to the left, this is the consequence of torque. Torque is created because your propeller is moving in a given direction (in this case left) this happens because the power of the engine is so strong is literally moves your plane, this is also because you have little lift and are mainly flying on your engine, as you could probably notice it was not happening in flight due to your high lift. To counter this you need to add a little bit a right aileron (right roll) and some right rudder (right yaw) to keep on the runway, then just add as much as needed while you ascend. Also don't be so hard on the elevator upon take off, it is a tail dragger so push the nose forward a little bit till it is level wit the horizon, and then add some up elevator (up pitch) to slowly and gracefully rise into the air.
Hope this helps!!!

This as DCS player was the funniest video I've ever seen honestly is the funniest part for me was when you started the tutorial haha It's exactly how I felt in the beginning and I think you would have done a lot better if you had a flight stick or even an xbox controller that you could hook up to the game it would make flying SO MUCH easier
Yeah, when he first got the starter going and said will this do it, I said "not with the fuel cut off it won't." 🤣
He would still have to know what buttons to map and what they do haha.
@@_Jake.From.Statefarm_ for the Mustang, you really only need the stick, throttle, rudders, and prop lever mapped (plus the trigger if you wanna shoot shit). That's basically all I have mapped in my setup, even though i have enough buttons to map everything.

Rudders for even the modern jets. I've flown the mustang it's super fun. I just upgraded though.
This was great. I don't think I've laughed so hard in months! Can you make more of these? If anything, you can rely on DCS to make things so realistic people get annoyed. 😄
Great video yet again. DCS is a game I have a love hate relationship with, but trying to fly a DCS plane in VR using motion controls is cursed.
Please, try this again one day with a joystick and throttle (Hotas) borrow one or buy one. Then take the time to set the controls properly.
Also, you CAN fly the F14 Tomcat as you can trial any of the modules for 2 weeks.
If I were to recommended you a follow up video to this one, it would involve the following.
* Use A joystick or Hotas
* Get a trial for the F14 and the supercarrier.
(Or alternatively get the proper Mustang with guns, + the Normandy Map)
* Team up with a DCS pro to show you the ropes.
* Optimise your graphics settings using OpenXR. (There are people who can help you with this myself included)
* Profit
Seriously congrats for winning VR content creator of the year!! You 100% earned it.

Congrats on your gaming award! Well deserved habie, great channel 👍
I'm 2 minutes in, and I just want to say *DON'T GIVE UP!!!* I downloaded the real IRL WWII manual for the P51-D mustang, and learned stuff DCS doesn't tell you. DCS may be somewhat challenging, but it's one of the most rewarding experiences you can have virtually: headset, or not...
Am i the only one that thinks its weird that the plane game video is 9:11 long
My observations regarding any decent flight sim in general and DCS specifically:
- it helps if you have real, physical control (HOTAS and rudder), you can start with cheap
stick and move on from there
- start with free flight, ie. - spawn in mid-air and get the feel for the controls
- if you're learning solo, ie. no friends to help you, going through in-game training lessons is kind of mandatory
- P-51 engine start is probably the simplest one in DCS, so is ground handling
- in DCS EVERY plane is unique - meaning, every plane has it's own control set, and you have to assign and setup controls for each plane,
also, I learned this the hard way, each control category (stick, throttle, rudder, keyboard, etc.) has to be saved in it's own file
- flight sims, similarly to learning to fly in real life, have steep learning curve, do not expect to come into any realistic flight sim, particularly DCS,
without any prior experience and just master it in minutes.
- realistic flight sims are high investment, high reward kind of games. Investment of time AND money, as you move on.
- if you're not at least flight enthusiast or even better, pilot in real life, start with some other flight sim, not DCS.
You can grab the throttle in VR like you do with the joystick and I'd recommend binding the x-axis of the "stick" control (the hand that is holding the stick) for the Mustang, the engine makes the plane roll and yaw a little bit (mostly on takeoff).
Propeller torque :)
Fun to watch. I'm an avid flight simmer and rl private pilot. DCS and Microsoft 2020 are my preferred rides. What this video shows, is how real DCS actually is. In some other "sims" we have 10 year old kids jumping into airplanes and immediately shooting down a dozen Planes. Ya can't do that in DCS!
pro tip: maybe you shouldnt start with one of the hardest full fidelity planes in the game
I mean, is it though? Once you know how to avoid engine burnout after a few minutes of flight it's not bad at all.
The startup procedure is relatively simple, though not the simplest out there even for warbirds, the take off is one of the easier ones for the warbirds and the landings - while more difficult than the jets, of course, aren't bad at all. Still easier for me than Bf-109. ;)
The challenging part is the engine management if you really want to push it without blowing it. Other than that it's a real joy to just fly around.
The thing is... I think he has no rudder pedals? You are going to have a VERY hard time with warbirds without the rudder pedals.
@@tomaszwota1465 Especially in a warbird, and that's without the wind.
real smoothbrain moment - every engine needs fuel, ignition, and rotation. First, turn on the battery/power, cause you'll need that. Turn on all the switches and knobs and levers that relate to fuel, mixture to rich, push the primer a few times, etc. That's step 1. Step 2 is to find the ignition key/switch and turn that one. It's usually called "magneto" in piston aircraft; if it gives you a choice between 1 and 2 pick 2. Step 3 is to find the button/key/switch that spins the engine up. If the engine is spinning, it's receiving fuel, and that fuel is being lit, the engine should light.
That procedure is about 80-100% of every engine start procedure you'll find on a fully modelled aircraft. A lot of startup procedures have a bunch of other steps but they mostly approximate to "Turn all the systems on" which is much less difficult for most aircraft.
Congrats on VR content creator of the year Habie! Very well deserved!

You can kinda fly around with just the controllers, but it's not a great experience (IMO) and any warbird take off attempts without rudder pedals are almost doomed to start with. As was presented, lol.
Also, many (if not most) flight simmers have some pretty expensive controllers like a HOTAS and rudder pedals. We also tend to find virtual units to get help/instruction from someone who knows what they’re doing.
I'm just saying man, you're literally the most wholesome youtuber I have ever met. Your content always brings me joy when I watch it cause I genuinely find it funny and entertaining, I really am glad you're a youtuber and the world is blessed to have you. I hope you have an amazing Christmas! :D
Good job winning the award! you deserve it.
If you wanted to get back into DCS... something that would help hugely is using a controller and keyboard (or a hotas if you are interested in spending a bunch of money). Trying to operate the throttle/flaps/landing gear with the motion controller is just going to be overload since you can't do it by feel and you really need to be able to devote much of your attention to what's outside the plane or to watch your gauges as you change throttle to see what it's doing to your manifold pressure.
While it is nice that they have workable buttons, dials, and switchea in the cockpits, setting up keyboard controls for all the things you'll only use sparingly is well worth the loss in immersion you get from operating the controls "manually" with the VR pointer. And having a button on a controller (or a throttle hotas) controlling throttle means you can keep your eyes on the runway, or on your gauges where you need them as you are landing (as well as controlling your flaps). What VR can't do that is kind of necessary for the most frequently used of the in-cockpit controls in this game (and in real life) is let you adjust controls by feel rather than having to look down at them.
this game is crazy. excited to see how you handle it haha
This video has the perfect length considering the topic.
Time to call in Drewski! I want some actual Top Gun gameplay in the F-14, Habie could be the RIO and Drewski could pilot. It'd be magical.

Lmao "I play VR so I should instinctively know how to operate complex aircraft hardware" hahahaha. I appreciate how dedicated you were to figuring it out just by looking at it, but this is why the internet exists.
Remember: if you can't fly a plane, you _definitely_ cannot fly a helicopter.
Also I hope Habie keeps trying so he eventually gets the takeoff and landing down.
I have a Sim Training School - it is only 3 years long and costs $15,000... but don't worry we'll have you in the air and flying within the first 3 months. ;-) Lol - yes there is a learning curve, but very satisfying once you get it down... not for everyone (so true!). Great vid. put a smile on my face.... back to War Thunder!!!
Hey Habie, Pilot and DCS player here. I would borrow a HOTAS or something from a friend and wait until one of the dlc modules goes on sale. I would also get something like the F-15C, which has a simplified start sequence and a non-interactable cockpit. I learned all about DCS in that, then moved onto fully integrated cockpits like the TF-51D you crashed in this video. I suggest a HOTAS because the vr hand system (where you grab onto the joystick with the controller) doesn't work well with any of the modules and was probably the reason you kept crashing. I promise if you spend some more time poking around you can see why so many people love it as a sim and game.
Congrats dude, absolutely well deserved! You are one of the few creators that I consistently watch each and every video for, thank you for making my day better.

The hardest part is learning how to start a plane. Everything else kind of just becomes second nature by doing it. Turns out there are less buttons to do everything else. Also if you struggle to remember the sequence. Sing the sequence to something like old McDonald.
Congrats on the award!!!! As someone who greatly enjoys your content (especially as a aviation super nerd, this video watching you struggle was a GIFT), you deserve the award fully. Keep doin you and you'll shoot past a million next year no problem! Also if you do want to at least fly in DCS for more than a few seconds shoot me a message and I can give you a crash course if you want the help of some random internet stranger. Even if its just to be able to take off and land alive and nothing else, I gotchu. I've taught quite a few people in pretty much all of the DCS aircraft from the F16 to A10, its just something that I enjoy so much and probably wont get close to in real life. Just getting your license is like $10k-$15k normally. These sims allow me to escape a bit as you say, and forget the soul sucking that can be life. End rant, my bad I just thought it might give me an extra percent chance of you taking me on my offer if I show how much of a nut for this stuff I am. Kinda counterinuitive now that I really think about that.
Knowing basics of how planes work will do wonders before attempting a realistic flight sim. Google Earths build in flight sim was where I started, highly unrealistic but also good enough to teach you the basics of landing a plane in PERFECT conditions. From there you can work your way up. Also you tried starting a plane with no fuel flow so.... yeah I guess you learned that engines need fuel
I suspect this would be 100x easier with physical controls. The “point the green laser at the tiny toggle switch” control style was brutal to watch.
At least the throttle and joystick + a couple of the essentials.
Talk about smooth brains I didn't realize this had like a full vr support. I figured it was only the headset to freely look around.
I fly DCS and this is the funniest shiggidy I've seen in a while! Absolutely how DCS is, it is the most realistic combat sim on the market and the learning curve is STEEP. Don't feel bad my guy nobody can fly this simulator with no experience, and for those who really want to fly a F/A-18C Hornet like the ones in Top Gun this is the place to do it.
☝️☝️Thanks for watching and commenting,Hit me up ☝️ I got special package for you 🎉🎁..
What's kinda funny about this is, that this is one of the easiest planes to start and fly in DCS... And it looked like that. I really want to see him in the hornet one day :D
please what? the hornet startup consists of pressing 10 buttons (not including weapons and stuff ofc just flying) and flying it is probably the easiest plane ever it even trims for you and the landing gear lets you slam it into the ground with like -3000 fpm. warbirds are wayy harder to fly/start/land
I swear everytime I tell people I play flight sims in VR they respond "oh have you tried Vtol VR?" To which I respond "no, I play actual flight sims"
Plane on the ground? Pilot alive? If yes to both of those, it's a successful landing.
I've just realized I stumbled across this channel 2 hours ago and it has entertained me enough to watch 2 hours worth of videos. I fuckin love this guy :D
Two things you might want to try, number one remember that the controls are weird AF, two have the front slightly tilted upward and lower the throttle down when landing.
Joystick forward = tilt down
Joystick back = tilt up
Joystick right = tilt right
Joystick left = tilt left
Some people (professionals normally) call it yawn left/right, but still, the majority say tilt up and down. Oh, and when starting you might want to try turning off the breaks and disabling the automatic kill switch.

I knew it. I'm the greatest fortune teller of our time. I did it.
To be fair, the Mustang is easily the hardest plane to fly in DCS.
Easy as dirt to start (compared to any OTHER aircraft in DCS), but that merlin engine strapped to the nose is 1,200 horsepower and 3,000 lbft of torque, all trying as hard as it can to kill you.
Simplified engine start procedure, if no one's given you it by now:
1 - set the brakes
2 - fuel valve OPEN
3 - prop lever FORWARD
4 - throttle AFT, then forward by one inch. (half the diameter of the handle)
5 - carburetor/mixture lever OFF
6 - boost pump ON
7 - hold the 'prime' switch for 5 seconds
8 - magnetos to 'BOTH'
9 - hold the start switch. engine should fire after 2-5 blades pass the canopy. as soon as it fires, RELEASE the start switch and move the mixture lever to 'RUN'
The reason you have to start with the mixture OFF is that these old engines have very poor mixture control. In fact, they have none at all below their normal idle RPM. This makes what we are used to with modern cars (turn the key, instantly starts running perfectly) impossible, because accomplishing that requires very precise control of the mixture at virtually zero airflow through the engine.
Since we cannot reliably get the engine to a target mixture until it is already running pretty quick, we instead intentionally flood the engine with the primer. We then start with the mixture control set to 'off' so that no new fuel is added. As the engine cranks and draws through air, the mixture will eventually fall into the region where combustion can happen. the initial prime shot will provide enough fuel to run the engine for several seconds before the mixture falls out the 'too lean' side, during which time we allow the carburetor to open and start adding fuel to keep the engine running.
The good news is that once you know how this operates, you can start any aviation piston engine made in the past century (or longer) because they all use the same principals of operation (because they're all based on 1940s technology)
Habie, I honestly did not realize until you mentioned your award thing that you only made VR content. It never occurred to me. I don't know why.

Upon watching I was thinking "fuck, this guy is entertaining!" anyways I watched a few more of your videos and then went to press subscribe but couldn't cus I already had. So, in short you confirmed that I must have intentionally subscribed the first time because your stuff is really good! Thanks for making me giggle multiple times!
44 seconds in.... The overwhelming feeling you get here with the controls, is the same feeling I got, switching to a pc from gaming on consoles my whole life lol
You really need a set of peripherals and someone to walk you through the basics of airplane control and it gets a lot more enjoyable. Rudder pedals and a throttle quadrant with everything bound to it is so key to flying that stuff successfully, especially in VR. You did give it a valiant attempt though!
5:22 it doesn't even matter how hard he tries
"Why is it so loud?" Well my smooth brained friend. It's because you're strapped in behind a motor that's more powerful than 20 Honda civics....
glad I'm not the only one who had a phase like this
Your start in the Trainee51 speeding off in the parking area and crashing to a ball of fire was my first experience as well! So I ran as quickly as I can to the nearest helicopter. Now I have found home! Helicopters are easy, they go up, and they go down, and I have now more sad frown! xD
A year in I have now bought 2 jets and the cycle start all over again, crash, crash and more crash... but I'm getting better! Jets are faaaaast! Who knew!?
The voice that said "the startup procedure is not too complicated" is the same guy that voiced the A-10C startup and probably other modules I don't own. I think he for some reason has that startup in mind as a comparison.
DCS tip: don't play with hand/finger tracking, it sucks. VTOL makes every cockpit control nice and big, and (I'm guessing because I don't actually play) always a button or basic switch. A real jet, and thus DCS, has a few more complicated switch and rotary knob behaviors that are basically impossible to hand track. Attempting to do so is a lesson in frustration and I could see it in this video. You want an actual HOTAS minimally for VR or flat screen, and if you fly in VR...I'm sorry to say that the only good control option for accessing all cockpit controls is on serious backorder for a while now: PointCTRL. Though I have yet to do hard research into alternatives.
"i dont wanna talk about it but..." proceeds to talk about & a very clean plug
Something about the graphics:
The TF-51 is literally one of the first planes made in the game back in the late 2000s, if you get a newer module (say the Mirage F1, do definitely get that) it's not only MUCH easier to fly and start than a p-51, but it also looks miles ahead in terms of graphics (having been released this year, not 2008)
7:32 bro got the throttle set to take-off with the brakes on 💀
the reason i love vtol vr is because its realistic but not challenging. however the skill ceiling is so ridiculously high whenm you start out you have no idea how intense it can get. its simple but realistic
Gamersupps and vail you say 👀 this gonna be an interesting period for the channel, can’t wait to see more
