Hey guys! I hope this video helps you understand and get the most out of DCS World's graphics and performance settings and makes your copy of DCS as beautiful as all the awesome trailers coming from the Devs over at Eagle Dynamics and their 3rd Party Partners!
No one has yet appreciated how you've done a revamp on the intro to your 2.7 video. I saw the Tomcat painted in that glorious Sundowners livery and my day drastically improved 😂
Tried out all these settings last night. It totally improved my graphics and I was blown away. No frame tearing/smearing/better FPS overall and looked just like the game does in ED's amazing cinematics. My settings since started playing DCS were a bit all over the place and I think I just set everything to high without really understanding what the hell the different settings actually did. I appreciated how you went over each individual setting for dummies like me to understand what's worth turning up all the way and what isn't. Thanks a million for this video
Thank you dude, you're a rock star! I've been hitting my head against the wall for weeks, since I upgraded to a very high spec PC, and still couldn't get DCS to look as good as it could for my RUclips channel. Many thanks!
Man! I'm really impressed with the channel! I used to love to play “US NAVY FIGHTERS ‘97” (I guess I’m showing my age 🙄😏) and if I was able to afford DCS I’d have the whole setup. I am not a pilot, but I did get to solo in a Cessna 150 in 1975. I was 16 and ground school was offered as a legit class in high school; that was probably the most enjoyment I ever had with my clothes on. I did not follow it up because I enlisted in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman/combat med and served with the USMC. I was medically retired in 2008 as a civilian paramedic with PTSD related to my response to the Pentagon on 9/11 after 31 yrs combined service. Please keep up the great work! I really enjoy watching your channel. Sorry this was so long… -Doc Lykins
Hey Spud! Great work on your videos. Love that you go very in depth to explain your content. As a suggestion, many of us already understand the settings and would like a quicker glimpse st your settings. It would be great if you included a screencap at the end of each chapter so we can quickly replicate them before listening to your reasoning. Thanks and kudos again!
I'm not any kind of videophile, so maybe it just doesn't matter much to people like me, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Started DCS a few years back with a GTX 970 w/ 16 gigs RAM. Ran with the default settings and didn't have any complaints about the graphics back then. Now on a 3080 RTX w/ 64 gigs and basically running with the default "High" settings at 4k. There must be minor things my untrained (and admittedly old) eyes are missing that others gain from tweaking settings. The game looks absolutely gorgeous right out of the box even on modest machines to me -- that's a testament to the devs at ED. The detail in the models themselves is where most of the sexy comes from, IMO. Jumping to the right cameras at the right angles w/ the right environment (time of day, weather, etc.) and adding some flare like music is all quite literally an art. The game is amazing. The community is amazing. I'm hopelessly hooked! Thanks for these tips and all your content, btw!
I think what most people gain from messing with the graphics is getting the highest frame rate possible while having it still look very good. And if you’re running an older card like my 3060 with 32 gb Ram it’s important. Especially while live streaming it creating RUclips videos. You want it to look the best it can and still get 60fps or more.
Thank you! I greatly appreciate the time you took to make this. Since 2.9, I struggled to get the correct settings. On NTTR I was always getting this tiger stripe effect with shadows on mountains and everything was just not looking like the fidelity I see in your vids. After making most of the same adjustments, my RTX 3080, i9-12900 with 32gb DDR5 setup looks better than ever! Just finished a mission in the F5E over the Caucasus and it looked amazing, ty!
Doing only VR flights, I’m troubled as these graphic settings don’t all work well. Curious if you use VR at all and if so, what your presets are in VR? Thanks for being here and I always learn from your great productions…..
Same. I still can't fathom those that fly on a 2D screen. 2D vs 3D VR is comparable to riding a scooter vs a motorcycle. The experience is just more compelling in VR. The newer headsets coming out at 50 PPD and up are going to be amazing.

awesome - i actually got a brand new pc w same cpu and was getting stutters in dcs and other games that i never stutters in! i was tilted! this works! i just tried it in dcs & tarkov and fixed the stuttering - thanks you sir!!
I started playing DCS last week and was having this really nasty stuttering every 4 or 5 secs, to the point it was simply unplayable. I know I have a mid-tier PC, but anyways I searched all over the web for fixes and realized it's a pretty common issue even on very high-end machines. Tried all suggestions and fixes and nothing worked until I just bought an NVMe SSD disk and installed the game there. I was running the game from an HDD. Great tutorial and thanks for the other video about excluding DCS world on windows defender that was a game changer.... DCS loads ultra fast ......thanks
First, my sincere appreciation for taking the time to make this video. I'm just starting in DCS and this was very helpful. I have a couple questions for VR users. 1) Resolution: I've always been told that for VR, we should set this as low as possible because it only affects the monitor image that is mirrored from the headset. I've been running mine at the lowest setting and it certainly doesn't look bad in my Quest 3. So is VR an exception or am I doing this wrong? Also, if I am supposed to set it to my headset resolution, should I set it to the per eye res or the total across both? 2) Max FPS: I've always thought we should set that to a little above the refresh rate of the headset, not lower. I would think that being locked lower than the headset refresh rate would cause issues but maybe I'm misunderstanding something.
Any chance of a vr setting guide or recommend one for 2.9 as vr is a lot more power hungry even with my 5800x3d /4090/ 64gb ram but a lot more immersive than a monitor
Thank you for this Video, one of the best on this subject. However, would you create a detailed video including the other Anti-Aliasing options (TAA), the Upscaling options (FSR, NIS), and the Scaling slider, please? What these settings do, best setting for lower end vs higher end PC's? These options I could really use some guidance on.
I've always been curious what to set the resolution to when flying VR? Should I fill my monitor's screen or keep it smaller so the video muscle goes to the headset?
Visible range is very important if you fly at night, if it's medium or lower you won't even see the city lights after 10nm. And i think that heatblur is broken in VR, if you have a jet in front it totally blurs your HUD
not to nitpick, but at 45:35, regarding your wind settings, IRL wind direction differ depending on the altitude, some might notice that the high alt clouds are moving in the opposite direction of the wind on the ground.
I highly respect Spudknocker and I love his content. I wish he made a video for graphics options set up for PVP multiplayer servers. I can't play at 4K on Enigma or Contention server if I actually want to spot enemy planes in the distance. Old multiplayer Reddit threads might not be valid anymore as of recent DCS update. I doubt that I want to have DLSS enabled if I actually want to spot the enemy plane dot in the distance. PS Personally, I set Anti Aliasing in DCS to MSAA x2 because that shimmer of an enemy plane helps me spot it against dark background on Enigma server. The enemy plane basically sparkles. I also set Grass/Clutter to lowest value to make it easier to spot planes and helicopters on Enigma. I wish someone made a settings guide for precisely these kinds of multiplayer servers. Setting up DCS for visual fidelity vs setting it up for PVP cold server or even for Growling Sidewinder is a completely different ball game.
Hi Spud, can I ask your advice on a problem that’s just occurred to my DCS? I have just updated the sim and have no throttle response on my warthog, the axis commands is showing a white circle with a red exclamation mark and I can get movement on the fine tuning graph but no response from warthog.Any advice would be appreciated Cheers
Just DL DCS today, trying to get started but the settings menu and tutorial in training font is way too small, I can't read anything, is there a setting to make the setting menus larger?
The Depth of Field option is more for specific cinematic shots, especially screenshots where it can simulate lenses depth of field effects. That's nothing you want to enable for actual flying as instead of simulation it looks totally like "Hollywood movie" with weird blurry fore and backgrounds, like through a high aperture lens. 😂
I’ve been trying to make DCS gorgeous, however, I’m running into a very annoying issue. Increasing the resolution beyond 1080p makes it incredibly hard to spot any targets in PVP and doing dogfights becomes practically impossible because I’m constantly losing view of the targets. Is there any way of improving the resolution and also increase the scale of the output image in order to stop everything from looking so small?
SSS should barely have any performance impact. In the 2.9 FAQ post, it is also stated that: "SSS (Screen Space Shadows) This is a new option that allows for better shadow rendering, specifically in environments with many objects such as grass, bushes, and forest. It gives these areas a more realistic look and feel without any performance hits from standard shadow maps. " It is a computationally cheap option to allow shadows from global light sources (the sun) to be cast at the terrain because the shadows generated are from subtracting the object from the shadow map. It is a simple step in the grand scheme of computer graphics. From my own experience it has no observable impact on my pretty mediocre system, which reflects ED's statement above.

yeah...lets not bring up the fact most youtubers and trailers are using reshade. you want your game to look great and like the videos.. download reshade like the rest of us. no matter what you do in any game settings, it will never look like their footage unless you use reshade. also it hardly uses any performance. alot of great tips in here. also thank you for the descriptions on all of them. i have some idea for what to change around in my settings. i have a mid range pc, so i dont have to pick and choose best options, cant quite turn all settings up to max and call it done yet.
I made a video about DCS's graphics and performance with a 5800X3D and a 7900 XTX with FSR and AFMF. The performance is just incredible! I personally play on 1440p Ultra with 120fps capped. Most of the time I have 120 frames but in very graphically heavy scenarios, especially when I fly low over Mariana Island or Caucasus's forests then it drops to 60
I have: R7 5800x3d RTX 4070 HDD (OR) SDD(250GB only) 32gb RAM (Win 11) And 32gb of RAM is not enough... DCS uses ALL of the memory and LITERALLY CRASHES if the page file is lower then 8 gb. I tried only 1 server. 4YA PVE 10-20 players. Can I just set everything to High but drop the Textures down? Some other suggestions? Thanks) PS. Is it possible to PVP on CY25t? I didn't even tried rn)
Hey spud About the max fps setting, you can edit the config file in the option folder in your saved games folder I set mine to 72 ( VR, pico 4 ) and I have my headset set to 72 with VD, and I have no stuttering If I move to 70 or 75 I have stuttering You should try to set yours to 144 and see how it goes I'm going back to watch the end of the video, thank you mate ;)
The best part of the 2.9 update is how I have to turn off extra AA to make the cockpit be a little clearer and then get ghosting amd jaggies. Seems specific to 1440 monitors and its annoying. And it's not like one can change any of these setting while actually playing the game so just gotta guess and hope.
Can someone maybe help me? Unfortunately I can't play multiplayer in DCS because the game lags so badly that it's unplayable. In the single player, however, I sometimes have 120 fps. Why is that?
I can't get my cockpit to be as clear as pre-DLSS update. (2.8?) To get it anywhere close, I have to turn off lots of AA, so I also have lots of jaggies. Oh, and ghosting. With my 4070 in 1440p, the older graphics engine would render better and probably with acceptable frames (no visible hitching). And the cockpit reflections they just added are low res trash. Unbelievable they thought a product they charge like $80 for would get such a crappy, low res looking "feature" in 2024. (referring specifically to Hornet.)
I went to the Download page and I didn't see an Open Beta Version. I only see Two Downloads (1) DCS World 2.9 and (2) DCS World 2.9 Dedicated Server (modular installer). Is there somewhere else you download the Open Beta Version or is there now only One Download for the latest version?

In the drop down menu for Anti-Aliasing, DLAA is greyed out and I'm unable to click on it
not to nitpick, but at 45:35, regarding your wind settings, IRL wind direction differ depending on the altitude, some might notice that the high alt clouds are moving in the opposite direction of the wind on the ground.
yesterday I broke my head, whit the settings thank for your pasion to the game, today you save my day, I HAve 3060ti dsll helps a lot
That is a really good idea!
Thank you Sir! Great video!! 👍🏻
Amazing intro, hopefully my old system might get something out of this vid too.
I hope you will!
Fantastic tutorial!!
Thanks Spud! Super helpful!
Great video, thanks for your work. I have a question if you don't mind: if i set the clutter/grass option to 0, will i get better fps? Thanks.
This helped a lot, thank you!
Thanks very much for sharing your settings. Looking forward toxthe eye candy, 😅:)
Just DL DCS today, trying to get started but the settings menu and tutorial in training font is way too small, I can't read anything, is there a setting to make the setting menus larger?
The Apache tho.. breathtaking.
In the 2.9 FAQ post, it is also stated that:
"SSS (Screen Space Shadows)
This is a new option that allows for better shadow rendering, specifically in environments with many objects such as grass, bushes, and forest. It gives these areas a more realistic look and feel without any performance hits from standard shadow maps. "
It is a computationally cheap option to allow shadows from global light sources (the sun) to be cast at the terrain because the shadows generated are from subtracting the object from the shadow map. It is a simple step in the grand scheme of computer graphics.
From my own experience it has no observable impact on my pretty mediocre system, which reflects ED's statement above.
Interesting I seem to get pretty bad stuttering from it
Very nice video Sir. Thank you.
I9-10900K with 3060TI. Im trying to run at least 2k (4k tv) but on Kola in F-4E with these settings I cant get above 9-15fps what is going on here?? I have dcs excluded from windows defenfer and core affinity to 6 cores.
Are there any specific NVidia driver settings you could offer such as Shader Cache size, etc ?
Anisotropic Filtering doesn’t cost performance? I would double check that, if I was you.
yeah...lets not bring up the fact most youtubers and trailers are using reshade. you want your game to look great and like the videos.. download reshade like the rest of us. no matter what you do in any game settings, it will never look like their footage unless you use reshade. also it hardly uses any performance.
alot of great tips in here. also thank you for the descriptions on all of them. i have some idea for what to change around in my settings. i have a mid range pc, so i dont have to pick and choose best options, cant quite turn all settings up to max and call it done yet.
Hey man most RUclipsrs might be but Glowing AMRAAM the official DCS trailer creator has stated multiple times that he does not use reshade
Reshade is also useless in VR……
I made a video about DCS's graphics and performance with a 5800X3D and a 7900 XTX with FSR and AFMF. The performance is just incredible!
I personally play on 1440p Ultra with 120fps capped. Most of the time I have 120 frames but in very graphically heavy scenarios, especially when I fly low over Mariana Island or Caucasus's forests then it drops to 60
One of the settings i changed made it jittery when i zoom when looking around anyone have a fix for that?
I have:
R7 5800x3d
RTX 4070
HDD (OR) SDD(250GB only)
32gb RAM (Win 11)
And 32gb of RAM is not enough... DCS uses ALL of the memory and LITERALLY CRASHES if the page file is lower then 8 gb.
I tried only 1 server. 4YA PVE 10-20 players.
Can I just set everything to High but drop the Textures down?
Some other suggestions? Thanks)
PS. Is it possible to PVP on CY25t? I didn't even tried rn)
I'll try to change "Pre Load radius"
+1 this all works great, WAY better sharpness, and life like gameplay
Hey spud
About the max fps setting, you can edit the config file in the option folder in your saved games folder
I set mine to 72 ( VR, pico 4 ) and I have my headset set to 72 with VD, and I have no stuttering
If I move to 70 or 75 I have stuttering
You should try to set yours to 144 and see how it goes
I'm going back to watch the end of the video, thank you mate ;)
Good to know!!!
I have an rtx 3050ti and for some reasone i can't have dlss or dlaa
I just watched your last video about this 😢 Time to do it again
Good stuff. Thank you.
Is there a precise way to ask chat gpt to give you the best graphics/per fps settings for VR depending on yout rig?
Really good video but I would recommend watching it in 2x speed ;) that worked pretty well for me
The best part of the 2.9 update is how I have to turn off extra AA to make the cockpit be a little clearer and then get ghosting amd jaggies.
Why is that?
does this game support HDR display by now?
I get weird banding in Syria at night. Usually where dark meets light. Any ideas?
That is most likely a hardware issue for you unfortunately, take a look at your black level settings and what not in your monitor
@Spudknocker thank you for responding. It was the nvidia driver. I rolled back and it's good now. Love the channel!
trying these settings now =)
there are better settings to make it look better i believe, but good stuff spud
Very helpful!
About max FPS: I think it is much better to set it near the 99% FPS value. By this way it should avoid stutters caused by FPS spikes.
I need ReShade in 2D just to get rid of the colour banding in the Sky on an OLED monitor.
They just got rid of the Beta options. There's only the one version moving forward. He must have recorded this a month ago.
Thx so much. You have some GREAT tutorials. Look forward to becoming a student.
Has there been a VR fix for the frame rate drop when going into F10 menu?
I have frame drop in 2d and vr did you fix this ?
Ty, Sir.
Okay. That's one way to open a DCS Video
I need some serious help with the settings for this game
I dare anyone to take a shot whenever you hear the word fidelity.
First 1:30 Minutes: Most romantic video in RUclips. 😎
Hahaha Well I am a Jetrosexual LOL
@@Spudknocker Hah! Imagine you put that word in your CV before applying to an airline. LOL.

DCS In The Near Future: how to run abandoned modules tutorial!
i just play the game on low and i love it.
Don't we just do a Spinal Tap and crank everything up to 11? 😂
HAHAHAHA I would do that but my RTX 4090 is smarter than my brain haha
i finally found someone with the same monitor as me
WWWWWWWWW. Saved me n my friend.
