Hello. I was just there last week! Loved it! Got up at 5:15 every morning to watch the sun rise! On the last morning, as I was collecting seashells and the water was at my calves, a family did yell at me about a shark close to me. As I ran out, I looked back, and Yup! He started swimming away! Was a few feet away! I did read that when they are hungry, they will swim close to the shorelines! I absolutely loved MB! And can't wait to go back!

Am I glad that the only sharks we normally get of our coast are filter feeding Basking Sharks, they are large and impressive though. It is becoming more common to see carnivorous sharks in summer that have followed the Gulf Stream from the Caribbean. Dogfish used to be common before overfishing decimated the stocks, they are the smallest member of the shark family and were once a staple in Fish and Chip shops, sold as Rock Salmon. Now a prohibited species to catch.

If you want to know if there are sharks in the water, take a spoon down to the water you wish to test, get a spoonful of the water, taste it, is it salty? There are most likely sharks in that water. :D I'm glad you got to see one.

If you were to search for myrtle beach rentals, the results indicate many sites to rent from. I can not vouch for these as I have not used. One could also search Airbnb and hotel sites which also list condo/house rentals. If one has never visited, I would suggest first staying at a hotel resort and explore the area to determine where to rent condos/houses next trip.
There are lots of warnings and there are many sharks. As to how dangerous, I would say you don't want to go to deep in the water and always be watching for them. And there instances of people being bit.
