G'day folks, The Strand station was once part of a major railway station, of which the station building can be seen across the tracks on the north end of the platform, there were once 7 platforms and was the terminus for the Auckland-Wellington express and many commuter trains at the time, it was closed in 2003 and now only used by the Northern Explorer, Te Huia and excursion trains
Thank you for teaching me about the stop over option! Or else I wouldn’t have known about it! Now I can definitely see myself doing this trip. You two are so cool, beautiful personalities! The world is a small place, we may cross paths some time.
Railfan here! The Strand station in Auckland is only used by the Northern Explorer service to Wellington, and Te Huia to Hamilton - suburban services all use Waitematā station at the foot of Queen Street :)
Just as well, The so called Strand Station is a dump. A container with an awning bolted on the side. No facilities. No toilets. No nothing. I'd be ashamed to expect anyone, especially overseas tourists, to use that. The last remaining operational platform from the old Auckland NZR station. Plus you have to walk through some nondescript car park to get there, and in the case of the Hamilton train at least you are not even allowed on the platform until everyone has got off. Third world. Great views too often compromised by abysmal facilities. Kiwis need to learn to be more critical of the junk they are served up as infrastructure otherwise it will never get any better. Btw Hamilton station is a dump too, only bigger and locked up.
Wonderful video and train trip -I've done it a few times nd it is stunning! Re your question on the train station you're leaving from 1:35 - your thoughts were right, its not the regular train station at all, they had to use an older station and line that is not connected to the regular network 0 just for this tourist service, rather than the regular commuter rail at Britomart in Downtown Auckland.
My dad was a guard on the railways this brought back so many memories for me thank you for sharing the beauty of our country. You and hubby excuse so much beautiful energy your editing and videography is very professional great video. New subby so i will watch many more of your videos
In 2003, I had a 6-week training trip at the College of Education in Dunedin city, Otago state. We landed at Auckland airport then took a domestic flight to Dunedin, arriving at Welington stopping to pick up and drop off passengers. New Zealanders are of Scottish origin, they are very friendly and lovely.
We’re of Scottish origin. And of English origin. And Irish origin. Many of us are of Maori origin. And some are of Samoan origin, Dutch Origin, Croatian Origin, Han Chinese origin, Greek origin, Hindustani origin. We’re not all of one origin.
@@RenataPereiraTV, hey you'll really enjoy that, the alpine vista's are breathtaking. Be sure to do the Alpine crossing as well, then you'll have 3 fantastic journeys locked into your memories.
This train service was "supposed" to depart from Britomart / downtown central underground station. Auckland transport then said "that will cost you [Kiwirail] $250,000 a year to do so because your trains are diesel and its an underground station", even though the all their regular commuter trains through that station were diesel at the time. Kiwirail said "no thanks, we'll depart outside the station". That's why the departure point is some random point at the back of Parnell. When politics get in the way of a nice day on the trains.
I had the same look at 4:11 when I realised how long the trip would take from Wellington to Auckland. But then again, I'm a local that's seen a lot of the North Island. So I prefer a road trip or plane ride. On another note, I'm always interested in seeing NZ from an outsider's point of view. I'm very much enjoying your videos. Thank you.
I'm from New Zealand, Palmerston North. I don't like long drives to Auckland, watching to see if train rides are the go. Might be longer journey but I bet it is more enjoyable than driving. Edit: I loved this, I think I'm going to do it one day, I think it is great way to graze and see the country side.

Great video & you got a very nice day for the journey. The reason they only allocate seats on the day is the stupid seating arrangements in the coaches. Some of the coaches have seating around tables suited to families of four, while the rest of the train has 'airline' type seating. The whole train should have airline style seating with a separate carriage for meals/snacks/coffee etc. If this was done people could book their seats online. While the train looks commendably clean the carriages and the freshly painted locomotives are ancient. Kiwi Rail makes Amtrak USA look like a very well funded operation😂

Thanks! Glad you like it! 🤗 Someone mentioned in the train that you could see it, so I actually found some people from Wellington confirming that: www.quora.com/Can-you-see-South-Island-from-Wellington - maybe it’s from a different spot?
Such a beautiful place NZ, everywhere you go is pretty amazing. I used to live in Wellington for 30 years before I moved across the ditch to Melbourne Australia. Actually nobody asked not to be in the video, but I wanted to be respectful to those who were around us all the time, as they didn’t choose to sit next to someone with a camera 😂
It all depends. I've lived in NZ for 35 years, and the only way I would ever take that train ride again is if all other travel options were not available. I found the trip really boring, uncomfortable, and hard on the body. The train slows down to 30 kph for every little village it passes through, which happens every few minutes. The track is old-fashioned narrow gauge, so the train carriages rock around non-stop, putting huge strain on your neck muscles (and I'm a pretty good athlete). The available food was total rubbish, better to bring your own food and drinks. Most of the fences and buildings adjacent to the track were covered in gang graffiti, and people who live next to the track tend to use their back yards as a rubbish tip. They just throw all their old cars, appliances, TVs, chairs and couches, etc out back near the track. If you don't have a car, better to rent one and just drive down. The view is much better, you can stop and look at stuff whenever you want, the food is heaps better, it's vastly more comfortable, and it takes just over half the time to drive the distance.
Wow, I bet most tourists would say to the contrary. Having said that, if I were a local, yes driving would be the choice to get to my destination pronto. Anyways, thanks for watching. Any suggestions on where to stop along the way if one were to drive? I could see us renting a car next time we are on the north island.
