The Problem with Reforming Religion: Hinduism Vs Christianity & Islam

  • Religion is often forced to move with changing times. But what are the consequences to this? How does Hinduism fare compared to Christianity and Islam?
    CORRECTION: Would like to make viewers aware of two errors in the referencing of quotes:
    @6:51 the quote should have
    One should renounce artha and kama if they conflict with dharma and even dharma if it results in future unhappiness or arouses people’s indignation. (Manu 4:176)
    @7:12
    The quote is taken from the Karna Parvan book 8 chapter 69
    Note to viewer: The views on gender discrimination in Hinduism and the need for change are to be taken in a general sense. They are not in reference to specific cases such as the Sabarimala temple. The overall point is that Hindus in the 21st century are free to decide what rules are best for their traditions and temples.

    There are many types of yoga (paths) to achieve god in hinduism like
    1 Bhakti(Devotion based ) yoga ,
    2 Gyan (Knowledge based) yoga ,
    3 Hath ( Body based) yoga ,
    4 Raj (Inner control mind control based ) yoga ,
    5 Kriya ( Performing certain action to achieve god ) ,
    6 karma yoga ( Doing action with out pleasure desire of result and attachment )
    And more , that is why hinduism is like religious democracy
    This paths are related to each other and not absolute or isolate , The main goal of all this paths are to abandon material pleasure and achieve god by devotion and realise eaternal truth that is much more important , i agree with your saying that hinduism is evolving by its nature but keep intact core value of realising god....

    • @Dharmicaction
      @Dharmicaction 3 года назад +1

      There is no "Bhakti" yoga. We have just shradda (based on truth). In Bhagavad Gita, the word Shradda was replaced with Bhakti (blind devotion) by colonialists to promote blind bhakti movements which can mimic Abrahamic religions. Madhavacharya and Ramanuja were created out of thin air by colonialists to create duality between atman and brahman by distortion of original ADVAITHA AND DVAITHA.
      Point is advaitha (non dual shiva) and dvaitha (dual shakhti) are incomplete without each other. This is Sankhya Vedic metaphysics which can be validated by logic, double slit quantum experiment and embodied experience.

    Bg 5:18
    Shree Krishna reveals in this verse how divine knowledge bestows a vision so different from physical sight. Endowed with knowledge, devotees see all living beings as souls who are fragments of God, and are therefore divine in nature. The examples given by Shree Krishna are of diametrically contrasting species and life forms. A Vedic Brahmin who conducts worship ceremonies is respected, while a dog-eater is usually looked down upon as an outcaste; a cow is milked for human consumption, but not a dog; an elephant is used for ceremonial parades, while neither the cow or the dog are. From the physical perspective, these species are sharp contrasts in the spectrum of life on our planet. However, a truly learned person endowed with spiritual knowledge sees them all as eternal souls, and hence views them with an equal eye

    • @Dharmicaction
      @Dharmicaction 3 года назад

      Well, we can't deal with a terrorist and sadhu in the same way, can we?. This contextual ethics is called Dharma.
      Krishna asked Arjuna to kill his adharmic relatives and when Arjuna was worried about consequences, Krishna said (in chapter 18 verse 17) if the intention is to re-establish dharma without getting caught in opposites like pleasure/pain, pride/shame, sympathy/hostility (aka ego-less state) then one does NOT create karma or cause and effect.
      Point is yoga pathway chosen depends on the context. When the motive is to get only Moksha faster, then sanyasa + dhyana yoga can be followed. While leading a worldly life and to escape from mind chatter and detachment form past actions one can follow Jnana yoga. To deal with adharma in the society Karma yoga can be followed.
      Dharma, Karma, reincarnation and Moksha (based on the well validated Vedic metaphysics Sankhya) should be looked together. So, Jnana yoga (going beyond all identities) is not the only pathway to get enlightenment. Sarva dharma and sama bhava. All yoga pathway lead to the same destination.
      If one fails to do their svadharma by pointing that everything is 'athma" - then it is nothing but escapism (unfortunately practiced by some hindus selectively)

    May I just say
    There are no proper Hindu texts that discriminate against race, sexuality, gender or caste
    The ones which do say so are man made and can be traced back to specific person
    There is no denying some part of religion is man made

    There are many extra orthodox hindus who want to follow every scripture no matter how morally wrong it's implementation is. A fluid can fit into all types of vessels without losing its properties but a rock cannot. Choice is yours. Stick to bad aspects and lose the entire religion slowly or progess and reform to establish relevance of religion in these times too. Times have changed and you can't bind people to religion by simply asking them to follow rules without questions. This kind of attitude of society led to the persistence of malice like untouchability, unjust behaviour with widows etc in the society for so long. Then there are aspects that are unscientific we should not cling on to them. Evolution is rule of nature. Everything is evolving from the universe to society to microbes. However reforms doesn't mean changing or letting go crucial aspects of this religion like revelations, many traditions etc.

      No... Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, many Hindu traditions etc will still survive very well. I am a free thinker. There is no idol worship or guru in my family. But we are very much Hindu in our demeaner, our idioms, our greetings, our festivals, our marriage, rice ceremony, death ceremony, in little kids organising Saraswati Puja and adults organising Durga Puja. Nobody worships Idols, they worship a concept, and when that's done the idols are immersed in water.

    Being a woman exploring spirituality kind of sucks. You have to go 4,000 years back to the first writings to find a time before woman was degraded and enslaved. This is now the best women have ever had it and we are progressing further with the help of the beautiful, kind, honest men seeking truth instead of power. Women will free men too, and we will be able to embrace and balance the masculine and feminine within each other and proceed towards enlightenment. The 4 class of people is based on work not on birth. Today's age is the age of devotion. Keep chanting the maha mantra"HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE ;HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA HARE HARE "

    • @stillborn826

      So why are the Hare Krishnas advocating Brahmina initiation for everybody regardless of their occupation or position in society? Instead of giving the Gopal mantra which is the standard Vaishnava mantra, they are giving Gayatri as a second initiation. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu repeatedly rejected the Varnashrama system as a means of achieving the highest goals in life. ISKCON is a conservative social reform movement aimed at establishing a Brahmina-led society. In Sri Caitanya lila, Ramananda Raya, Haridasa Thakur, Raghunath dasa and others were recognized as Mahatmas and leaders despite their lower birth caste. But Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu never tried to revise the system officially - HE JUST DISCARDED IT in favour of a higher platform of devotion. In the name of social reform, ISKCON has got themselves entangled in an outdated system that has traditionally perpetuated all kinds of abuses. The speaker of this video is correct. We should focus on higher goals and move on.

      @stillborn826 3 года назад +1

      @@Just_so_simple With respect, it is not necessary to institutionalize the mode of goodness by giving Gayatri Mantra and sacred thread. This only causes confusion. ISKCON has already alienated foreigners from joining by failing to distinguish between social and cultural issues like Varnashrama Dharma, and what is essential to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.s teaching. Now ISKCON has practically become a form of Indian cultural nationalism with only a handful of foreign devotees (90% Indian and 10% foreign membership worldwide) This is not what Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu or even Srila Prabhupada intended. But like Prahalada Maharaja says, the effort to solve a problem often just creates a bigger problem. In this case the problem is that the imposition of an artificial caste system to reflect the mode of goodness is a huge distraction to the real business of Vaishnavism i.e. chanting the Holy Name.

    Should morality and revelation be chained to one another. No! However, revelation influences morality and ethics. For example, if the Divine is Truth, then I would go against my nature to live in falsehood. Some social issues are just social constructs. However, there are ethics, attitudes, behavior, etc that causes a person to live more in communion with Divine and helps fulfills one's purpose and other behaviors that does the exact opposite. There are self destructive behavior and there is behavior that promotes healing and community.

      Dharma is contextual ethics that have to be followed to avoid karma, to stop reincarnation and to get moksha (microcosm to macrocosm). It is based on the well validated Vedic metaphysics Sankhya (darshana or vision or so called revelation). Krishna said to Arjuna to kill his 'adharmic" relatives and when Arjuna was worried about the consequences, he said there is no Karma or cause and effect when the intention is to re-establish dharma without getting caught in pleasure/pain, love/hate, pride/shame. This is equal to ego-less state.

    You have very rightly said that Hindu dharma is always evolving with the changing times.for example we have done away with Sati dah pratha and also person of lower caste were not allowed in Temple and now all Hindus can go into any temple for diety Darshan. The very fabric of Dharma is to distinguish between the ever changing world which is Maya and cling on to the truth itself which is eternal .Here is where meditation and inner contemplation comes. What that is happening in this World is because of desire for satisfaction of ones senses .one should rise above these mundane things and concentrate on God alone.That has not changed my friend. One should realize that we are all stuck in this world of illusion and running after things which we will leave behind no matter how dear they are to us .try for liberation from this life and death cycle. That should be the ultimate goal of all human beings.

    It would appear that all revelatory systems usually contain clauses that refer to an impending age of apostacy. Even the Trika system of Abhinavava Gupta is partially derived from a set of teachings that were initially disseminated by a form of Shiva existing in Satya yuga having five heads and eighteen arms. Teachings that had diminished so much during Kali yuga that no one was able to receive them any more, and the few sages that remained who could went into hiding for fear of their lives. So... once again Shiva takes another form and teaches it all over again to whom, apparently, are the only ones left alive that could receive it. And for fifteen generations thereafter this person had to create 'mind born children' capable of being taught. These individuals were not human. I hear many Hindu pundits differentiate shraada from Abrahamic versions of blind faith, but it seems to me that both depend upon belief in that which they have received from their earthly masters? Is it easier to believe in deities having multiple heads and arms than it is to believe in a solitary faceless deity that walks in a land called paradise into which He has installed two beings, his greatest creation, because he was lonely? A project that either ultimately failed, or was exactly wha had been intended? If the former then He could only be seen as impotent. If the latter then there is no way in hell(to use a popular Western colloquialism,) such a being could, or should, be called benevolent. Of course these are just isolated examples. Yet all of the revelatory systems seem to be prone to these inconsistencies. Are there any amongst this audience who can resolve these issues? I'd really like to know. You have no doubt because ______________________________?

      It does need change. Your present life being the punishment of your past life karma is senseless, through overall concept of karma is sensible. Any reference to birth based varna needs to be removed (although again the concept of varna is not senseless but still divisive and hierarchical). The culture of caste and horoscope matching has to stop in matrimonial. Anyone who mentions the word manglik should be treated the way west treats people for using the N word. Animal sacrifices has to stop - the very concept of taking another life to please God is extremely regressive and cruel. We have a great foundation but our house is a mess. Let's clean up fast.

    But I have one thing to say, people who literally believe any of the scriptures and holy books (in any religion) are mostly fanatics with low IQ who are like puppets. So any clever person should not follow the teachings word by word, but twist and add to it what they want and follow that. Ultimately religion may not be anything, it is an abstract thing just like a class (in computer programming if any of you know). What you follow and get out of it is ultimate.
    And I also think that if some religion feels overly opressive, it is better to quit that religion and follow another religion or not follow any religion at all.

    In the Western view, religion can be reformed, formed or restructured, but Dharma cannot. Because Dharma is a natural, eternal, human truth. Basically society can be reformed. There are many examples of this in the Indian subcontinent. Dharma approves of anything that is good for people and the environment. In many cases, if a lot of options come to the fore, in this case, the one that can be huge good, less bad, is the one to accept. Greetings from Bangladesh.
