The song is absolutely amazing, but I LOVE the subtle storytelling in the video. Like the fact that she lights her candle at the beginning and it slowly shrinks, literally burning itself out while his stays unlit & cold. He's not emotionally invested at all, letting her do all the work to "keep the fire burning" in their marriage until eventually there's nothing left & it goes out
"Why is this song not more popular" Shes a indie artist. And not everyone gets this song (see some of the weird comments at the end of this comment section). Its misunderstood on one half of this world's population lmao.
I've been binging reactions to this song and I love how hard the first "you sure make me do a whole lot of labour" hits every single person who hears it for the first time.
Yes! Came across this song earlier in the summer, very powerful and I am sure represents all cultures. I know my grandmother spent her life being a servant and gave birth to 4 children. Even at a young boy I recognized the imbalance in the relationship. She was precious to me and I regret not learning spanish so I could understand her world better. I appreciate I was there to hold her hand as she passed just me and her.
My wife has the same memories growing up in Brazil especially from homes where she worked when she moved to Rio. Props on a good pick, Biss 👍 Great marital philosophy, by the way.
Ahh I’m actually going to watch her perform on Wednesday next week and I cannot wait! I really hope this song is part of her set! Thank you for a great reaction!
As a transgender woman who has seen things from both sides of the equation I can honestly say that I understand this song. I saw this behaviour with my grandfather and my father as well. It is still happening with my dad. I am ashamed to admit that although I wasn't as bad as them I was doing it too. Talking down to women, to my wife. The hardest part of accepting my identity as a trans woman was letting go of the status and privilege that being a cisgender white male provided me. I figured that men would start to look down on me just as they do with cisgender women. My lived experience as a trans woman has confirmed that I was correct in that assumption.
I appreciate you sharing this. I honestly find it fascinating seeing how people's perspectives change once they transition. I've seen a video on a transgender man who also commented how lonely it is to be a man, compared to a woman. Both perspectives are vital and important to bridge this gap, as it is one of the best ways to really see the differences and what each side is talking about. I think what frustrates me, as a cis woman, a lot is that women want to improve these things. They want to have better communication with their partners, they want things to change for the better. Maybe not all of them, but I think a lot of them. But we're just so tired because it is ALWAYS one-sided. And even the things men complain about (loneliness, not being able to be vulnerable, etc.) are things men place on themselves. Although women aren't innocent either. There are far too many women who use their insecurities as an excuse to tear other women down, who place crappy men above their friends and family, who turn their backs on the ones trying to make things better. I don't know what the answer is, but something does need to change at some point.
@lizzydreamer6940 I appreciate your comment. I can perhaps offer more perspective on it. In terms of feeling lonely as a trans man. I can see that. Having transitioned to be a woman, I see that women are much more social and talk about personal things with eachother. This is something that I have experienced, not just with female friends but even perfect strangers. I am visibly trans and I know that people see me as such. Many women have opened up and had discussions with me about their family, their partner, themselves and I never experienced that before transition. In fact women would ignore me completely. It was lonely but only in hindsight. At the time I didn't know any better. A trans man does know better so I can see how he would feel that way. I don't know what the answer is. You may be wanting your man to change, you may even be telling him how. He just doesn't see it. I remember my wife saying things to me pre-transition. About how I was not standing up for her when my family would talk down to her or even when I would do the same. I heard what she was saying, but I just didn't see it. I heard the words but I didn't feel that I was wrong and I put her reaction to my family down to her just being overly sensitive. I think that experience plays a role in this but I really feel that estrogen and testosterone have an even larger role. I just have so much emotion and feelings now and I absolutely love it. I was like a shell before. Perhaps we are designed that way as a survival mechanism. Who knows for sure. Men don't want those feelings, they don't want to be vulnerable, they don't want to look weak in front of their peers. You probably can't get rid of it entirely, but I think that you can do things to help improve it. You can stand up for yourself. Don't let them get away with it when they treat you poorly. You can teach your daughter to also not tolerate it. You can teach your son to treat women with dignity and respect. It's a tough one for sure.
@@Britneygurl Thanks for replying! I'm grateful to hear about your experience. Yeah, it would be interesting to find out how much hormones plays a role in these differences. There have been studies conducted on the differences between women and men's brains, which should also yield interesting results. I think partly why women are more social is because it is kind of a survival method. Although, I do question it, because women can also be some of the biggest bullies. Personally, I experienced that with my ex. Felt like I was talking to a wall, and finally got tired and left. It was draining me emotionally and financially, until I couldn't stay any longer. I look forward to the day when we can find solutions to these issues, and are able to better understand and emphasize people's different circumstances. I honestly don't know how we're going to get there, but I have hope. People are speaking up and coming together, there is more focus on healing and mental health, better relationships... so we are moving in the right direction, even if it doesn't always feel like it.
I watched my mother work a full time job, raise two children, cook and clean every night, remember and plan celebrations for every important date or birthday, make every appointment, grocery shop on a shoestring budget, and work herself to the bone on every holiday just to be "allowed" spending money from the money she helped earn and get screamed at for things she didn't do "right" by a man who went to work came home and sat on his ass the rest of the time. Before I got married I was very up front with my now husband and vowed I would *never* fall into the same trap my mom was in. Thankfully I didn't, my husband contributes just as much if not more than I do and we just celebrated our 20th anniversary.
It is such a powerful and damning song against all of the ways that the patriarchy gets into everything. I would like to think I am a pretty progressive and supportive guy, but I have ended up doing some of these things, particularly the mental and emotional labor I put on others. I am working on it and trying to be better, but it is such a pervasive message that society communicates to us that for a lot of people (such as myself) we aren't doing it deliberately, but we ALSO need to take the steps to actively unlearn these things and be better partners and take on our proper share of the relationship burdens
love your reaction! she also has a 'cacophony' version of this song with a whole bunch of women singing it from around the world- the video is on her channel! I'd also love if you could react to her full album, also titled Cacophony, there's so so many good songs on it especially 'The Woman on Earth'. And she has many more singles and eps she's released that are very good too.
I take care of my husbands 80 year old grandparents and I have to tell you, seeing how he tries to treat his wife and very unsuccessfully tries to treat me, enrages me! He is not a fan of mine because I am a strong powerful woman who isn’t afraid to use my voice and empower/stand up for her! I don’t want her to live her last decade (hopefully) under his dictator thumb!! I love this song and showed it to my daughter. ❤ I love your video!!
Biss the woman and the man should love each other from the bottom of there heart, our it's not true love, dont let any body take advantage of you buitiful reaction biss you nailed it❤😊
Thanks biss your right a man shouldent demanded things his wife he should love and respect her i dont like what you saw but its made you the person you are loving and caring and i ❤you for that and you look stunning sweetheart
This is especially my grandparents generation, having several kids (my dad's brothers are very close together in age) and the women are expected to do all the household things alone, and some things pass on to the next generation like women always being the ones to cook for celebrations etc. Not to mention the abuse on one side and the PTSD from serving in WW2 on the other from my grandpas. I've heard so many stories.
Im 48 and live in US. My daughters are around your age probably. I tried to break the cycle, so I taught them how to fight and they took self defense classes. They were athletes in multiple sports including wrestling. My grandmother's and mom's generation fought to win us more and more rights in my country. We all tried to break the cycle little by little. Unfortunately the men didnt like it and are now trying to drag us back to before we had rights kicking and screaming. The sad part is many women forgot why they fought for those rights and why they mattered so much. They joined the mens side by voting to allow this insanity to come back. Women have already lost their lives too
Im in my feminem rage era. If you haven't listened to her Niki Rockwell is amazing. Same old energy and burn your village are amazing, its a 2 parter story.
True. I would do the last lines only because it came from my heart and I wanted to do it and not because someone made me do it and yeah thats the difference. I also grew up with this kind of set up... Its my mom and she continues to still live with it for 30years. The line "if we had a daughter id watch and could not save her...she'd do what you taught her and she'd meet the same cruel fate" hits hard because it is now happening to my sister and all my mom could do is to share empathy for her own daughter. I also have a very close friend who is currently experiencing the same hell. Just like you I would do anything to prevent this in happening to me because I grew up and is still living around people who is unable to escape this kind of hell. Not to mention they couldnt have divorce because its not yet legal in our country.
Our grandmothers and our mothers have broken so many cycles for us. I'm glad we are not living like them. We should also make things easier for those who will come after us
