It doesn't need to be overly formal or a contract or anything, but sitting down together to figure out pet-peeves, ways of doing things, etc is super helpful. I roomed with my best friend and we still had one. For instance, she really wanted the dishes out of the sink every night and I needed no shoes in the house. Having a lot of these discussions up front made things a lot easier. I worked on a cruiseship for Harding retail. I recently finished my first contract on Regent Seven Seas. I was bullied by one of my cabin mate from other Nationality. I been working and living abroad for 10 years and I understand that it is very challenging to work and live with people from different cultures and backgrounds. We have to respect each other and adopt a good hygiene. My first contract was not East but I learn new things and lessons. When I was on ships, I think it was in the contract to shower daily before your duty, the recommendation in the booklet was 2 showers a day. I shared with a guy that showered 3 times every day, not kidding. I wouldnt care, but he never did anything to get a sweat on, whereas I would often return onboard from cycling - sweaty, muddy, filthy dirty, then he'd be hogging the shower again into the deadline for us getting ready for work. Another time, I shared with a born-again Christian who was onboard with his fiancée, they were saving themselves up for when they were married. I used to stagger back from the crew bar about 1am, they'd be there reading the Bible to each other, and me being a very chatty atheist after a few sherberts, I'm sure we had some very interesting conversations if I could remember them. They organised themselves sharing a cabin next door, leaving me with my own cabin (result!) and I never heard a peep more out of them. Or they out of me. Which was more than I could say for the female hairdresser on the other side, who was seeing a 1-stripe officer at the time, and their relationship was anything but Platonic, as was audibly apparent on several occasions. In fairness, she did ask me if I minded the disquietude, I assured her quite the contrary 😁. The worst one was the guy that always wanted privacy after hours, when rowing to his girlfriend into the early hours on the cabin phone home, meaning I had to disappear to the crew bar whether I wanted to or not😁, sometimes til 2-3am how rude! He's married now, with a kid to someone completely different. so that was all worthwhile. Of course, when I wanted privacy to call home, he would never reciprocate. Happy days!
This is such a great video for roommates in general and honestly I think a lot of these things can apply with your first marriage or first romantic partner you live with as well, especially if you’re like me and never had siblings or roommates, living with anyone for the first time can just be a huge culture shock. I live on the West Coast (USA) but my biological parents are both from the East coast and almost everyone I’ve dated is also from the east coast even if I met them in LA! Always thought it was a weird coincidence but now I think you’re on to something with regional body odor differences. I’ve tried to date guys from the Midwest and they usually just don’t smell right to me and I really always thought I was being crazy. I think you can like multiple regions though- I’m a sucker for guys and girls from North Carolina after doing a summer session there, culturally it was so different but everyone was so beautiful and sweet and smelled so good and dressed so modestly (in a way that really appealed to my faith based side that I wasn’t used to being from the city) and I just fell in love with everyone. Versus I’ve literally never had a successful relationship with anyone else from California….yet anyway. Go figure! Also as gross as this sounds - a lot of Uber drivers of all races and genders usually always tell me I smell really good and it’s almost always on the days where I don’t shower that morning but do double perfume. But I do shower every night before bed so it wasn’t a huge deal but I still felt a little grunge sometimes in my morning commute - it’s worth your weight in gold to find perfumes that work with your natural body chemistry that actually compliment you. The right or wrong perfume or cologne (or right or wrong amount applied) makes a hugeeeee difference. I did almost 3 hellacious years working night shifts covering west coast nba basketball games until 5 am and so after waiting up all night for Lebron, sometimes I wasn’t up for a shower and had to be back at work in a few hours. Using really strong tide detergent that’s highly fragranced makes a HUGE difference and is usually the first thing someone will compliment me on when I enter a room, whether I have showered or not. So if you’re not big on actually showering every day - there’s so many things you can do. Never repeat any clothes, not even over shirts or pants. I always wash everything between wears if I’m not showering as much as I should be like during a busy film set. I always try to use body soap and perfume that matches my natural scents so a lot of that is just trial and error. I’ll buy a handful of cheap walmart ones and maybe a few mid range Ulta or high end Sephora samples on there and when I’m wearing a new fragrance if it’s on a trial period I keep the bottle in my purse because generally people ask about it, i think i missed my calling in life to be a perfume matched cause i haven’t really had any misses yet, and people constantly ask me what I am wearing. I also use summers eves wipes all over, prescription deodorant, use dry shampoo daily, and will take a rinse off shower probably every day and then take a longer shave my legs / wash my hand shower every few days. When I’m too sick at home and literally am throwing up or passing out and can’t shower or get dressed and need to go lie down - a clean freshly washed comforter does wonders to cocoon someone in to hide their body odor while they sleep it off. Oil diffusers seem legal and popular in most ships and they are good for both preventing motion sickness with ginger oil and helping sleep with lavender and helping anxiety with lemongrass and orange for depression. So many others but that’s off the top of my head no candle of flames required!

When I was in initial training of course along with dress codes, hair styles, perfumes and colognes were about a one hour class. Also, prior to 1972 hotel rooms were shared. Since at least since1972 all single hotel rooms. But while at work or any social setting we always have to let someone know they need to freshen their breath. Offer a mint, if you notice a co-worker has poor breath just always carry some mints and offer one. If they have spinach in their teeth or their nose may need to be wiped. PLEASE TELL THEM IN SOME WAY. I WOULD THANK THEM FOR LETTING ME KNOW. It gets easier after you have done it a few times. Just do it! But their are the people who eat a cup of garlic with every meal. It comes out of their pores. Also people who consume lots of drink the evening before and the smell comes out of their pores. My sugesstion is that every time you join a new ship, part of the briefing of policies and rules just a handout with all cultural differencies of the all of the different crewmembers. People get used to their own odors. Supposedly why some women ( and guys too probably) reek of perfume.More so if they use the same one every day. They use more because they can't smell it any more. More and more and more. Dunno what's worst - stinky feet or a yeast infection. Both can get pretty bad if no one says anything.
26 year nurse here....a normal vaginal yeast infection has no odor AT ALL. If you are experiencing an odor with a supposed "yeast infection", I encourage you to see a Dr ASAP. It's not a yeast infection sis.

My husband had to deal with a similar sticky (and stinky) cultural situation with an employee, working in an office building not a ship. She was a lovely woman from a very rural area of the middle east who, unfortunately, was also uncomfortable using a toilet. Upon finding her "doing her business" onto a towel in the corner of the conference room more than once (even after being trained in the use of a western toilet), she had to be let go to maintain a sanitary work environment for the other employees.
I'm very cultural sheltered person. That being the case cannot imagine how anyone could be comfortable putting their poo anywhere but a toilet to be promptly flushed away. I've got some many questions here lol

@@weamalgassim no, not at all. I never meant to imply that this was common with Middle Eastern people. My apologies if this was misread. I have been friends with many Middle Eastern people and they were all very clean. It was just this one particular woman. She explained she was uncomfortable with toilets because she never had one at home. She was from a very rural area where they didn't have plumbing. Sometimes when people are put into new situations due to trauma, like this woman was, they have to hold on to something from their past to feel grounded and safe, that they are still in control of something in their lives. It's an involuntary psychological response that helps people deal with change. This had nothing to do with her race, it was due to being removed from home and forced to adapt to an unfamiliar environment.

I am aware of some places in Asia where people do their thing in the open, but not in West Asia (middle East), maybe she's from some other parts of Asia. People confuse us as one people, we tend to have similar facial structure more or less and somehow similar complexion.

Thanks so much for doing this video. We've all heard that we are desensitized when it comes to smelling our own poop but it also makes sense the same should be said to our body odor in general. We can smell what is particularly noticable but most of the time we probably think our aroma is mild when it might not be to others.

Yes, those single hotel rooms cost millions of dollars a year. Currently American Airlines uses over 9,500 rooms each night world wide. Single rooms are part of both the pilots and cabin crew union contracts.
Sharing cabins sounds like a growing experience dealing with different people and resolving issues in a positive manner. Also, would suspect that only children and folks who had their own room as a kid struggle more to adapt to the lack of space.

I worked for Disney in 2007 on in internship for college. I had 5 other roommates besides me. Two people per room in a three bedroom apartment they provided. One roommate kept his dirty laundry on the floor where you couldn’t see the floor. Could not even walk in the room without stepping on his clothes. It was a relatively big room. He eventually got kicked out of the program.

My mom and I have lived together all our lives, however sometimes it is difficult to live together because each one has some different customs. I think sharing the cabin with an unknown person. Very difficult
Some things are hard to explain and when you are so close to someone for a long period of time, it's important to be able to communicate without rear. This girl is good at talking about personal problems. I like the way she explains things and she uses herself as an example. Having spent 4 years in the navy onboard a ship, I understand the problems of living in close proximity to others. The major difference is the number of individuals you have in the same compartment.
My problem in university is that Resident Services would drop my smoking preferences from my data. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke and would always put down non-smoking. In the switch around, they would "forget" and I would end up with a smoker. The first one, I'm pretty sure just didn't specify, since she was "quitting" but she had a boyfriend who smoked nasty cigarillos. He also expected to hang out in our room all the time, which was a problem for me. The second time was a summer assignment and the woman was otherwise very nice. She made the effort to switch rooms. I felt bad but I can't fix my allergy. Our dorm rooms sound vast compared to crew cabins! My son's current dorm room has a bathroom shared between two rooms and four roommates, but each room has its own sink.

My roommate finished USPH cleaning late at night and came in when I was asleep and decided to shower. Which was fine by, me it didn't bother me, but what did bother me was at 1:45am when she decided to blowdry her hair right next to my bed. I had to be up for Debark at 6am. Definitely pissed me off.
Working in a pharmacy, I have some questions regarding medical facilities. I've seen some videos and was very impressed at how advanced the clinics onboard are. I was wondering if a crew member or passenger is on a medication, can that be supplied on board? As crew do you get basic medical care in case of an illness covered on board?
(Having worked for a major cruise line for 5 years traveling throughout it’s fleet of, at the time, 24 ships, as a US citizen) yes every ship has an extensive pharmacy stock onboard and the cruise lines self insure their employees and provide full medical care for anything that happens onboard, even if it’s something they don’t have the resources for dealing with onboard the ship by having them see a specialist on land at while in port or temporary signing them off on medical for more significant issues. For an example I had a major head wound (my fault) while on duty and the on call team was able to treat it quickly and effectively. There are times when crew members will complain of medical issues that won’t be taken seriously, however I know I’ve had issues where I told an onboard doctor that I know I have sinus issues just give me a z pack I know this will work and they did. It’s far easier for those who speak English as a first language and have some knowledge of any medical issues they have. For those crew members who don’t have that advantage, things can be difficult if they experience medical issues onboard.
@@felipemares2829 (sorry just saw this) yes as long as you’re legally allowed to take it through customs you can bring it onboard with you. My mother’s a nurse and she brought a couple different prescriptions with her onboard as a “just in case” type of thing.

i had a school roommate who always was a bit smelly I think she may have been using wrong D.O. yet she had such a problem with people who wear perfumes or air fresheners. It was a tough situation. I tried softly encouraging lotions and such that I liked for her but I never fully brought it up. Another friend brought it up She actually meant well bc others were always gossiping about her. It was totally taken the wrong way literally got roasted & accused of being a horrible person. I can only imagine how much harder it would be on a ship. I've also experienced wake up to roommates shagging and IMHO its just too much.

I think your diet has a great influence on how you smell. I've always noticed that peoplr who eat a lot of curry have a completely different smell than those who don't. I think it comes out in the person's sweat.

You don't notice that you smell or that you have an accent. My son just left for university and we can't keep his room shut up or the smell will take over. We can't just leave the room door open because our jealous cats will compete for his space and pee in there ("This is MY room!" "No, it's MY room!") So we have to leave his room door open with the fan on and then block the door with boxes and baskets that are inconvenient for our elderly cats to jump over. We have to do the same with our guest bathroom.

I can tell you showering 2 to 3 times a day is a very normal thing for some cultures, like here in Brazil.

My sugesstion is that every time you join a new ship, part of the briefing of policies and rules just a handout with all cultural differencies of the all of the different crewmembers. With the handout it should be made clear this information is very inportant. Be well. ( I would be happy to share with that cute second officer you interviewed a few months back.)

That’s why in the American military, NCO’s make sure all personnel are taking a bath once a day, teeth and other things are cleaned. Room and bathroom inspections . Clean troops, health troops.
Respecting each other’s boundaries is key.

People get used to their own odors. Supposedly why some women ( and guys too probably) reek of perfume.More so if they use the same one every day. They use more because they can't smell it any more. More and more and more. Dunno what's worst - stinky feet or a yeast infection. Both can get pretty bad if no one says anything.
Stinky feet is often due to a fungal infection, so I try to remember to spray my feet with antifungal spray, after showering.
I have over 30 different scented perfumes lol. I get paranoid about Bo so I put a lot on. I shower every day too.

26 year nurse here....a normal vaginal yeast infection has no odor AT ALL. If you are experiencing an odor with a supposed "yeast infection", I encourage you to see a Dr ASAP. It's not a yeast infection sis.

My husband had to deal with a similar sticky (and stinky) cultural situation with an employee, working in an office building not a ship. She was a lovely woman from a very rural area of the middle east who, unfortunately, was also uncomfortable using a toilet. Upon finding her "doing her business" onto a towel in the corner of the conference room more than once (even after being trained in the use of a western toilet), she had to be let go to maintain a sanitary work environment for the other employees.
I'm very cultural sheltered person. That being the case cannot imagine how anyone could be comfortable putting their poo anywhere but a toilet to be promptly flushed away. I've got some many questions here lol

@@weamalgassim no, not at all. I never meant to imply that this was common with Middle Eastern people. My apologies if this was misread. I have been friends with many Middle Eastern people and they were all very clean. It was just this one particular woman. She explained she was uncomfortable with toilets because she never had one at home. She was from a very rural area where they didn't have plumbing.
Sometimes when people are put into new situations due to trauma, like this woman was, they have to hold on to something from their past to feel grounded and safe, that they are still in control of something in their lives. It's an involuntary psychological response that helps people deal with change. This had nothing to do with her race, it was due to being removed from home and forced to adapt to an unfamiliar environment.

I am aware of some places in Asia where people do their thing in the open, but not in West Asia (middle East), maybe she's from some other parts of Asia. People confuse us as one people, we tend to have similar facial structure more or less and somehow similar complexion.

Thanks so much for doing this video. We've all heard that we are desensitized when it comes to smelling our own poop but it also makes sense the same should be said to our body odor in general. We can smell what is particularly noticable but most of the time we probably think our aroma is mild when it might not be to others.

The body odor rings so true. When I was stationed in Germany, I found the locals a bit stinky and that may explain why.
Great video, i had great roommates, but once i was paired with a DJ, that didnt work out, personally I think that people smell according to the food they eat, so some people smell differently.

Yes, those single hotel rooms cost millions of dollars a year. Currently American Airlines uses over 9,500 rooms each night world wide. Single rooms are part of both the pilots and cabin crew union contracts.

Sharing cabins sounds like a growing experience dealing with different people and resolving issues in a positive manner.
Also, would suspect that only children and folks who had their own room as a kid struggle more to adapt to the lack of space.
I think that is the 'problem' with marriages today -- putting together two people who have had their own 'everything' all their life until that day (since very few share a room, television, etc these days)

I worked for Disney in 2007 on in internship for college. I had 5 other roommates besides me. Two people per room in a three bedroom apartment they provided. One roommate kept his dirty laundry on the floor where you couldn’t see the floor. Could not even walk in the room without stepping on his clothes. It was a relatively big room. He eventually got kicked out of the program.

My mom and I have lived together all our lives, however sometimes it is difficult to live together because each one has some different customs. I think sharing the cabin with an unknown person. Very difficult

A lot of these sound similar to college roommate experiences I have heard about.
Some things are hard to explain and when you are so close to someone for a long period of time, it's important to be able to communicate without rear. This girl is good at talking about personal problems. I like the way she explains things and she uses herself as an example. Having spent 4 years in the navy onboard a ship, I understand the problems of living in close proximity to others. The major difference is the number of individuals you have in the same compartment.

My problem in university is that Resident Services would drop my smoking preferences from my data. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke and would always put down non-smoking. In the switch around, they would "forget" and I would end up with a smoker. The first one, I'm pretty sure just didn't specify, since she was "quitting" but she had a boyfriend who smoked nasty cigarillos. He also expected to hang out in our room all the time, which was a problem for me. The second time was a summer assignment and the woman was otherwise very nice. She made the effort to switch rooms. I felt bad but I can't fix my allergy. Our dorm rooms sound vast compared to crew cabins! My son's current dorm room has a bathroom shared between two rooms and four roommates, but each room has its own sink.

My roommate finished USPH cleaning late at night and came in when I was asleep and decided to shower. Which was fine by, me it didn't bother me, but what did bother me was at 1:45am when she decided to blowdry her hair right next to my bed. I had to be up for Debark at 6am. Definitely pissed me off.
This seems like the same kinda life I had while living at a student dorm when I was studying up north.

Working in a pharmacy, I have some questions regarding medical facilities. I've seen some videos and was very impressed at how advanced the clinics onboard are. I was wondering if a crew member or passenger is on a medication, can that be supplied on board? As crew do you get basic medical care in case of an illness covered on board?
(Having worked for a major cruise line for 5 years traveling throughout it’s fleet of, at the time, 24 ships, as a US citizen) yes every ship has an extensive pharmacy stock onboard and the cruise lines self insure their employees and provide full medical care for anything that happens onboard, even if it’s something they don’t have the resources for dealing with onboard the ship by having them see a specialist on land at while in port or temporary signing them off on medical for more significant issues. For an example I had a major head wound (my fault) while on duty and the on call team was able to treat it quickly and effectively. There are times when crew members will complain of medical issues that won’t be taken seriously, however I know I’ve had issues where I told an onboard doctor that I know I have sinus issues just give me a z pack I know this will work and they did. It’s far easier for those who speak English as a first language and have some knowledge of any medical issues they have. For those crew members who don’t have that advantage, things can be difficult if they experience medical issues onboard.

@@felipemares2829 (sorry just saw this) yes as long as you’re legally allowed to take it through customs you can bring it onboard with you. My mother’s a nurse and she brought a couple different prescriptions with her onboard as a “just in case” type of thing.

i had a school roommate who always was a bit smelly I think she may have been using wrong D.O. yet she had such a problem with people who wear perfumes or air fresheners. It was a tough situation. I tried softly encouraging lotions and such that I liked for her but I never fully brought it up. Another friend brought it up She actually meant well bc others were always gossiping about her. It was totally taken the wrong way literally got roasted & accused of being a horrible person. I can only imagine how much harder it would be on a ship. I've also experienced wake up to roommates shagging and IMHO its just too much.

I always soak my gym clothes in water for half an hour, before rinsing and hanging them up to dry.
How often can crew do laundry? I agree with the twice daily showers but how often are sweaty clothes laundered?

I think your diet has a great influence on how you smell. I've always noticed that peoplr who eat a lot of curry have a completely different smell than those who don't. I think it comes out in the person's sweat.

You don't notice that you smell or that you have an accent. My son just left for university and we can't keep his room shut up or the smell will take over. We can't just leave the room door open because our jealous cats will compete for his space and pee in there ("This is MY room!" "No, it's MY room!") So we have to leave his room door open with the fan on and then block the door with boxes and baskets that are inconvenient for our elderly cats to jump over. We have to do the same with our guest bathroom.
This is why I’m hoping to be put in the same cabin as my partner. 😢 if anything I’ll communicate it with the cabin mate.
