    This video is exactly what I needed. I just bought a Nelson Rigg tailbag and i was reading a bunch of GS riders talking about "just standing on the pegs", but I just didn't feel as certain about doing it on my Ninja 1000SX. Seeing you do it on a S1000 and detailing the process set my mind at ease.
    Went straight out to the garage, bang, leg over and into the saddle. Thanks mate.

    I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who does it like this, especially with my sciatica issue. I also appreciate the fact that you mount/dismount from BOTH sides, which, from the right hand side, is sometimes necessary on soft surfaces and when the ground slants downwards more to the left.
    Well done!

The big thing I've taken from this video is keeping my weight down the centreline of the bike which I'm sure will lessen the force on the side stand, thanks for the info, very useful.

    It may be a silly question, but can’t it damage the footpegs and/or the sidestand by putting too much weight on them?

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  2 года назад +1

      At the end of the video I do warn against potential damage to the sidestand (over the long term if you used this method regularly).
      In terms of footpeg damage, I think generally the footpegs on the vast majority of bikes today can support a persons full weight. However I have damaged the footpeg rubber on my Motorbike using this method because I have been rotating my foot as I got on and off the bike thereby putting a twisting force into the rubber itself. It would be best to try to have your foot on its normal riding position on the peg as you step on and off the bike. I did talk about this in one of my more recent videos but I might do a separate little video just on the point. P.S. the only silly questions are the ones you don't ask 🙂

    Superb mate. I do the same thing, and that’s without a top box, cos I’m not as “bendy” as I was. My Africa Twin is so tall, I can’t cock a leg high enough (arthritis). It leans well to the left on the side stand so I mount from the left, but can see a real benefit from the right, to reduce the risk of going down, and I’ll be trying that next time I’m allowed out 😉.. Brilliant vid Rikky 👍

      My pleasure Bob! The only things I'd ask you to watch out for is to avoid twisting your foot on the footpeg as you get on and off your bike. It took a while but I ended up tearing the footrest rubber away from it's mount and now need a new peg!

    I saw a 5’4” American guy getting on his GSA by standing on the pegs with the side stand down. I was wondering if it would damage the side stand, the mounting or the bushing, as you suggest. However, after 1 hip operation and due another (but for COVID) I’m not able to swing the old leg (as opposed to the new leg (my left one)) over easily. I’m not short either, I’m 6ft with a 33.5in inside leg. I’ve not owned a bike since I sold my K1200S in 2013 when I moved back to the UK from Cyprus. My local BMW Dealer has been excellent. I’ve had 2 proper test rides (full days). My first was on an S1000XR which was great, but I was struggling to get my operated leg over. I took out the sales guy, Dave’s bike after I was going for another day on the XR and I was told some clown had pranged it! Dave has a 1250GS Rallye and that was so much easier to get on and off. I think it’s the back of the XR with the way it kicks up. The GS was nice to ride but it didn’t really excite me so I have a decision to make. Anyway, my wife has stuck to her word that I can buy a new bike when the time is right. It’ll be next year in the spring when I’m back on a bike.

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  4 года назад

      Hmm decisions decisions! Do cast your net a bit wider too and give some more bikes a test ride (if any tickle your fancy that is). BMW do seem pretty happy to let people test ride their bikes which is very helpful! And yes the XR has a bit of an odd seat - I didn't gel with it either but some people say it takes time to get used to the design and after that it does start to make sense. However for you its more of an issue of getting on and off the thing without causing discomfort so I can see how that might take some working out.
      I really liked the boxer engine in the R1250R I've ridden but I suspect perhaps the extra weight of the GS might take the edge of performance. Maybe a Ducati Multistrada or a big KTM could be worth a look.
      Sidestands don't seem to be engineered as strongly as they used to be IMO and probably can't stand up to repeated full weight mounts and dismounts... especially if the bike has got a load of luggage on too. Depends on the bike I guess but I would say this approach is probably best used only occasionally.

      @@RikkyTang My first bike was an Aprilia Futura 1000RST. It was brand new, just before I did my test. It was a lovely bike, except it had so many problems that I would never ever go near an Aprilia again. I’m stuck on BMW. The sales, after sales and the service I got from my local BMW dealer puts all others in the shade. When I had my bike, before I got remarried, I went to the Ducati dealer in Uppingham, Leics. I was on a £13500k BMW and the cheeky idiot treated me like I was not a serious customer. I had a similar experience before I bought the BMW in another dealer who sold several Japanese brands. They wanted deposits etc etc, so I told them to stuff their crappy bikes. When I went to the BM dealer, they treated you with respect the moment you walk through the door. No brainier, nothing else comes close t the service I’ve had, even now, turning up in my car, admittedly in an Atlantis 4 Suit and Daytona Evosport GTX Boots. However, they don’t know if I’m serious or not. They’ve taken me at my word and treated me with respect. Add to it that I had my two BMW Sport helmets swapped free of charge for two brand new BMW Race helmets costing £520 each. I paid £250 each back in 2007. That’s the BMW difference, they look after you no matter the cost. No, Sir, I would never cheat on my BMW! (I drive a Merc, they make better cars!)

    Will most modern Motorcycles sidestands 'endure' this procedure? Are there any bikes you wouldn't suggest using this method? (Great vid by-the-by!)

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  Год назад

      Good question! I think you'd have to look at this on a bike-by-bike basis. Some sidestand mounts are really quite flimsy even on modern bikes. Also if you happen to weigh a lot that could put additional stresses on the sidestand and it's mounting hardware

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  Год назад

      Hi Belfast Biker, I'm afraid that your question is outside of my experience, but I would guess that putting 310lbs (plus riding gear?) through one foot peg of a 125 might be asking for trouble with the peg and side stand brackets over the longer term.
      However if you do manage to carefully get your weight over the centre of the bike as you mount and dismount you would reduce the stresses on those parts.
      Hopefully someone else can chime in with their experience.

    Hi Rikky - ditto to the previous sentiments of gratitude for this useful demo. My seat is covered in scuff marks from where I was goose stepping onto my fully loaded bike during a recent trip to the IOW. I'm just a little concerned that if the bike rolls forward slightly then the side stand would flip up. I have also tried mountng with the centre stand down which is a bit more stable (no good for getting off though).

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  3 года назад

      If you can get your hands on the front brake (or leave the bike in gear) that should reduce the chances of the bike rolling forward... to be honest it's not likely to roll forward on level ground anyway due the way sidestands are typically pivoting forward from the bike when in use. But, still it's better to be safe than sorry so practice with care!

      I hope the Rukka suits wears in over time and that you aren't always so stuff 🤣
      Yes I do have concerns about the side stand (depends on the bike) and I would suggest that this should only be for occasional use.
      The bike does feel a lot heavier than the S1000 when pushing the bike around in the garden but I have a small turntable in the shed now which makes turning the bike around on the centre stand painless and has really made dealing with the bike much easier when the engine is not running.
      The bike is awesome - still haven't finished running it in but even with 5000rpm max I'm having a lot of fun!!

      You can certainly try it, but I'd be more conscious of getting and keeping the top half of your body in line with the bike as you start to step over it. Otherwise you risk pulling the bike towards you as you start to climb over it or overbalancing when you start to sit down on the bike. You'll be putting a fair bit of pressure through your knees and arms so prepare for that.
