  • Stop mounting your motorcycle from the ground on the left side. This is a method taught to beginners learning to ride on the street and should be put aside after you leave the parking lot. Adventure motorcycles, duel sports, tall street bikes, short riders and riders with limited movement should be peg mounting (mostly from the right side).
This lesson teaches methods and techniques for mounting solo or with a passenger. How you get on and get off your motorcycle does matter.

I've been mounting this way for years, because I am a big guy. Another advantage is that if you are on the side of the road, you're not mounting from the same side that traffic is passing.

Thankyou very much for this video, I've just got back into motorcycles after a 4 yr hiatus & hip replacement and I'm not as flexible as I was back then, this video has given me the confidence to practice this method, especially approaching from the high side which I've always avoided. Comes in handy sometimes due to some parking situations where highside would be the better side. Consider me a new subscriber.👍👍

I love using this method of mounting and dismounting with the pillion in place -- but -- make sure to shut off the bike in gear. The one time I did not, and did not notice a very gentle slope, the bike along with my lovely wife rolled off the side stand and feel to the ground. I then said ``what are you doing down there`` which did not help much. Just be in gear on shutdown.

This is one of your best videos- and that is a tall order my friend!
I used to be a monkey and get on my bike so many ways BUT on duty broken back/neck fused with titanium rods/shoulder crushed really limits my mobility now. Especially if I have been off the bike for a bit I go out in the garage and practice getting on/off. Your vid gave me great motivation and justification to keep it up and keep riding.
Like I said, your videos are amazing in content-and this one stands out. Thank you for all you do.

Passenger is another thing. I get on first and hold the brake and stabilize the bike. My wife puts a foot on the back peg and struggles up usually holding on to my arms. She is short and has limited mobility. On her scooter she gets on first and slides back but I hold the bike by the handlebars. She wants to sell the scooter and get a three wheel electric scooter. Excellent! After seeing someone break their side stand while mounting their bike using the foot peg I have never tried it. I have seen many people do it without an issue but still. I have never seen anyone do it from the right side and everyone I have seen mount using the peg hasn't done it with transferring the weight off the stand.
Now that I know the correct way to do this I'm going to practice and use this skill. The older I get the more difficult it is to do that high kick to get on my bikes.
Thanks to you and Christina for sharing your knowledge.

Really? Man, the kickstand *had* to have been damaged, haha. (Or perhaps the rider weighed as much as the motorcycle?) I'd be afraid to even park the bike, for that matter lol. Sure couldn't do any handy kick stand turns!
Personally, I use the pegs, but just climb on whichever side of the bike I happen to be closest to. Sometimes if it's really leaned over, the right side is way easier, though. It can be hard to climb on a tall bike with rear luggage without them, even for me at 6'1".

Thanks Bret, I have been doing this for years but from the left side. I have done this technique on 250cc bikes and on 1200cc bikes, never had a problem with the side stand. I do two things that for me work well. I either have the front wheel straight or turned to the right to give room to mount and I ALWAYS keep my right hand on the front brake lever to keep the bike from moving just in case. I find mounting from the right side unnatural, I know it is just my brain but why change 40 years of brain training? Thanks for the video.

I'd been practicing the step up technique to mount motorcycles but stopped when someone told me I was putting too much weight on the kickstand. Now I understand what I was doing wrong. As always, your lessons have been very helpful. Thank you for making these videos!
If I may ask - In another video you had mentioned using the front brake to help slow your descent down a hill. I was riding up in the mountains a couple days ago and hit a few areas that felt kinda steep. Basic fireroads. And when I was using the front brake, it felt like it wanted to slip out from under me. It was a combination of engine braking and front brake most of the time but I did try to just glide with the front brake too. Is that normal? I fought the urge to use my rear brake for it but it was really uncomfortable.
Also. Can you offer any advice on going around bends that slope awkwardly? I managed to go down on one over the weekend. They seem to be my kryptonite when it comes to riding off pavement. Thanks!

Partialy I was using my body to raise it from the kickstand, but the getting on I either intuitively did as I should or I'm very lucky and my kickstand is a trooper.

Opposite side gets pretty shaky and I don't like it. I'm 73 years old and don't have great balance. Kickstand doesn't sink into the ground. It has a 3" square plate welded on. After getting a tall bike (DRZ 400) I was told by the seller and other videos about mounting on the right side including the safety factor of being away from traffic. My right knee isn't the best and I had to pick my body weight up the 18 inches (the right foot peg heigh) can be painful. I was approaching the bike at an an angle. Per your instructions by planting your knee into the gas tank seems to create a lot less stress on my knee and the counterbalancing of your weight over the bike seems to happen without having to make a consious effort. All the other videos teaching this mounting method need to go back and include the knee to tank aspect. Thanks

For the passenger I just keep the kickstand down, and have them step up and mount and dismount normally behind me. The main problem with ADV bikes is the passenger pegs are just really wide and high so the passenger tends to pull the bike over.
The only issue I ever have is if the bike is not on perfectly level ground and settles enough once their weight is on it that the kickstand starts pushing the bike off balance the other way. Just gotta be prepared for that.

When the sidestand side is higher then the right side, you do need to put pressure on the handlebar I found out as the bike will tilt easier to the right side, i.e. your side.

Very nice info. Bret, pls help me with this. I am 6ft tall with a waist line of 36in. The riding pant always crawls up my calf even when it is XXL fit for 36-38. Longer riding boots required?

Goto Areostich or Cycleport and have a pair of pants made to your custom sizing.

PS - for a moment, when I saw you standing on the back of the motorcycle, I thought you were about to do a backflip off that thing. :D
