RUclips game is on POINT, Cory. Lovin' the quality uploads and enjoying your expression as an artist in this more visual medium. Looking forward to the next one!
Really, really great stuff... if I may, I'd add a couple from my own experiences as a touring sideman. -Learn to dance. Even if you don't move much, what you look like on stage matters. Some basic footwork goes a long way. -Learn languages. You never know when those 2 semesters of French class will get you out of a sticky situation on tour. -Many bandleaders are "producers" or "singers" and not "musicians". Learn their jargon and don't expect things like "more accent on the syncopated notes, please" -When it's time for your solo, you're no longer a sideman. Own the stage.
Great stuff, Cory. It reminds me of some things I've read in interviews of guitarist Dave Keary, long-time member of Van Morrison's touring band. For example:
Playing in Van Morrison’s band has set him a whole new set of challenges. Van is up there in the pantheon of artists amongst Dylan, Paul Simon and Neil Young. The catalogue of songs in his career is huge and Van does not work off a setlist live; he’ll just pick a song and go with it. “I have learned nearly 300 songs of Van’s. And I have another 200 to learn,” says Dave. ...There is a public misconception about Van being difficult to work with as a musician. Dave describes the soul legend as a generous band leader. “He gives latitude and scope to the players to bring something to the table. He is very open to that, not dogmatic at all. It is a very inclusive arrangement, a lot more than people would think.” “He works so quickly and he has a clear and focused vision of the way he wants things to sound and how to achieve that. He comes from an era greatly influenced by Ray Charles and all these jazz and blues greats. The pace is incredible and he goes for an ensemble recording. The essence for Van is capturing that soul and energy from a performance. It keeps you on your toes as a musician.”
Corroborates your "How to Musician" lessons beautifully, I think! I'm not even a working musician but these videos are invaluable. I really hope you keep making these. I've sent them to a few music buddies and they've all loved them.
He does kinda? He seems attached to both, don't get me wrong, but I recall him mentioning that he bought a second Strat, same model, same finish, i think some Seymour Duncans instead of the ones in his #1. You can see it on the Sirius XM sessions Vulfpeck did awhile back. It being identical, idk which he used for the trampoline shot but i would guess its #2
Sounds like a Gibson Owner... Fender's are Robust and can take a beating! Also... bouncing on a trampoline isnt like walking a tightrope or sky diving. ;)
I just love this series, Cory. It's super well edited, it is fun to watch and most important: It ist just very good advice (not only) for musicians! Cheers!
A legend with a musical IQ of about 5000 giving free advice on RUclips. I guess we could say this is priceless in more ways than one. Lol Thank you for the insight, Cory. You are a great inspiration and role model for everyone.
1:47 I am grateful that you address this. Why not try “side performer” or “side act”. I am no native speaker so I’m not sure how that might sound to you, but I think that might work - or maybe some of our “non-male cats” can let us know if that suits better? 🙏🏻 I was surprised that in my language such a term doesn’t even exist! I mean it’s German. We have words like “Bodenseeschiffahrtskapitänsmütze“. Back to topic. Much appreciating your awareness here, Cory.
Well I thought Cory's music projects were cool...then I saw these! So cool to hear your wisdom sir. Delivered entertainingly and with great humility. No wonder you're a success
Amazing!!! Blessed that you posting and giving us so much content this year. Weather its awesome music, on the one episodes or those very helpful "how to musician" videos! Even podcasts! Bro you define the word "music". Stay healthy and all the best to you and your family and friends. Keep the good work up!
Ernie Ball is feeling generous and going to send you a bunch of cool stuff. plz email social@ernieball.com and they'll get some stuff sent over to you! peace! cory.
@@hanslarson3646 On the Vulf channel, there's some videos Jack made teaching the piano chords to some of the songs. I've watched them and every time Jack plays a 4 over 5 chord, Jack says so and shouts "the classic!" So I'm just assuming based on that.
@@TreyTreyG This is not creepy at all! The fact that you remember is amazing! I surely was there- right up front, having a grand ol' time. Wasn't it a great show?!

Cory Wong playing a song, he can’t do wrong. It won’t be long before he wins...a grammy.
"It is a framework not a cage." 👌
I’m a violist so I play in string quartet settings. This video is 110% relevant to me in classical settings, thanks mr wong
Edit: spelling
Commenting because this is great & you deserve the algorithm working in your favor
The Sidehuman, also "it´s a framework, not a cage" was spot on!

All I could think about is how stressed it was to see my dude jumping on a trampoline with his infamous #1😬
Me too, he’s had that guitar since high school. He needs a stunt guitar for hijinks.

Sideperson? Sidey? A shepherd of greatness? The number one number two man?
Possibly the best new video on RUclips this year.
And i don’t just mean for musicians.
Bravo Cory Wong!
I saw you a few years back with Ben Rector and I thought you and Cody did a perfect job of a making the artist better.
All of your videos have really useful information some of which I learned the hard way. Great series that I recommended to my son.

such good explanation and example. agree 100%

Dude, thank you. This shit just makes me happy.
Well put, music man!
this is such a awesome content man!!!
good stuff bro
Amazing content.
Cory Wong is the king of the internet.
“Make the band leader look better.” Shows Up with an assorted pack of colorful Tube Socks. “Here you Go Jack.” Nailed it!
Sideman. You offered an alternative in the video: side musician.
'Sidey' of course :)
Hmmm its like vulfpeck is a band full of sideman. Thats why everyone shines and supports eachother?
Some examples would have been sick. Like in the communication part.
unfairchild in the background 😳
is Cory considered a sideman of Vulfpeck?? On the one hand, he's not part of the actual Vulfpeck core. On the other hand, what is Vulf without Cory??
He was named after one of their songs for goodness sake!
he's probably a collaborator/friend more than anything, like an unofficial member
Cory is a core member of vulf at this point, but he also fits his role in making Joe Dart shine
whats the song at 2:05!
8:55 fyi the 4 over 5 chord is a direct reference to Jack Stratton.
How so?
@@hanslarson3646 On the Vulf channel, there's some videos Jack made teaching the piano chords to some of the songs. I've watched them and every time Jack plays a 4 over 5 chord, Jack says so and shouts "the classic!" So I'm just assuming based on that.
maybe but jack didn't invent that chord or anything lol. It is in a lot a vulfpeck songs though so could be what he was referencing
Flanker? Peripheral person? Lateral they? 🤔
Do cory wong have perfect pitch???
Hi! Does anybody know what's the song playing at 2:00?
The Boardwalk! from the Striped Album
Maybe an alternative word for "Sideman" could be "Sidekick"?
wowowowowowowowowow quality
Saint Wong.
sideman? support cast.

The 5 dislikes were the people who noticed Cory in the first clip
You mean Sidemusician? xD You literally used it yourself :D
Accompanist is gender neutral term for sideplayers!
“Fuck you pay me.”
Gender neutral term: Sidekick! :)
I regularly refer to myself as a "support musician" not sideman if you are looking for a gender neutral term :)
Sidekick, sidemusician, sideperson, collaborator, supporting musician
?
Sidefolk
Side folk
the female version of sideman is actually _sidechick_
I know this is kinda boring but would you be able to talk about paying taxes as a musician? Lol, I just don't want to get arrested for tax evasion.
