These videos are, like, the best professional advices I've received in a long time. I'm an electrical engineering researcher and all of this, with the given substitutions, is applicable to my work. It's a how to: be a professional. Love this.
This series is just some of the best I've seen so far on these topics. I gave the live music/gigging thing a go for awhile as a side hustle in my 20s and I could have really used this stuff back then. So much of this I learned the hard way.
Great video Cory! The best coping mechanism for rejection is talking to your friends about it. You end up realising that everyone has rejection stories. And then you have to move on and keep trying.
I was rejected earlier this week from a jazz conservatoire I wanted to go to here in the UK, but now I've just had my other interview, it's looking extremely likely I'll be accepted into an even better school! You never know what might come of a rejection, but that doesn't stop it from feeling like crap.
I think this is a great perspective from someone who is world-class. Now there is a problem: By definition, only a handful of people can ever be world-class. So the reality is: For many of us many things we aspire to may in fact be unachievable simply because of technical proficiency or charisma no matter how much effort we put in. I think it is healthy to be aware of this and then to focus on goals that are actually in your reach. It's so easy in 2020 to always aspire to be the _very_ best because that's what we're seeing on RUclips etc.
Needed this after a voice wrenching audition where they wanted “Grace Slick” sung at full voice at 10:30 in the morning. No-I never heard back from them. Got any hot tea? 😅
Really needed to hear this Cory! Been at a tuff point in my life trying to decide if I want to continue going for music as a career or settling for something else! Thanks for the motivation!
Very timely video! Due to this pandemic, I'm betting it's not just me that feels like a failure trying to be a *Musician* when there are much fewer opportunities. Also, the way you've gone about occupying your time and delivering these helpful videos is very inspirational!
You are so right, I got rejected for a very good job, but a bit later I got a much better gig wich I would not try to get if I would have got the first one.
I actually got to see Soul Asylum with Michael Bland on drums at my old high school Pinkerton Academy. Fountains of Wayne and Evan Dando of the Lemonheads too
Thank you for this. We need to REJ ECT rejection. Going for the thing that you're going for is the thing to get going on.,, I thingk... "you do not know what is in your best interests..." - The Course In Miracles
wow, it's really interesting that although you love the alt rock style you nowadays play in quite different, more relaxed and happy style. I always thought that the personal style comes from what you love the most, but it seems that it doesn't? anyway, great video :D
I just watched some Soul Asylum videos (wasn't too familiar with them) and I have to say... Within minutes you probably would have been bored to tears in that band.
*two guitars were slightly harmed in the making of this video*

Best rejection coping method is to recreate the audition with your family members and ask them to say yes
I agree ☝️
Tonight I’m having a party, and we’re going to listen to Wong Notes and watch How to Musician, and every time Cory says “the thing”, we take a drink.
I didn't imagine Minnesota as a place where you can sit outside in a light sweater at night in December.
