  • I'd wanted to build a campervan for some time so I gave it a go. Can't say I saved a lot of money over buying a second-hand factory-built camper, but the DIY satisfaction? - priceless!
    For two years later, and a few tweeks, see this video...

    Excellent craftsmanship. I think your spot on by leaving a sink out of the bathroom. It's just unnecessary plumbing. It's just a couple of steps to the sink in the kitchen.
    I'm glad to see someone else making the shower with fiberglass. I made a 24" x 30" shower in one of my builds and fiberglassed the pan up about 12".
    The next one will be a 24" x 24" shower.
    Also I'm in agreement with you about the porta potty. It gives you a lot more options for dumping when a proper dump station is not available. I used a porta potty for 3 years with no problems
    I also combined the kitchen and shower so that when the space was not being used as a shower (15 minutes a day), it doubled as extra counter space.

      +ridingismusic The galley position is not the usual one for a panel van. But having decided that my next build will be a 4x4 flatdeck truck camper, I have realised the floorplan is the same as many side-door ones (bimobil et al) turned 180deg - my bed is where it would be over the cab of a pickup, I just have the advantage of the garage underneath.

    great job, where did you get that tank you used for fuelling the webasto heater? It's the ideal shape. I'm installing a diesel heater myself soon and was going to have someone do it for me connecting it to the vans diesel, but thinking about it now with a secondary tank like this I could install it myself and save money by filling it with red diesel.

    Anyway, WOW! What an amazing quality build. Since deciding a couple of weeks ago that I would like to build a similar motorhome, I've binge watch quite a number of conversion videos. Yours HAS to be one of the best (even though I'm not keen on slideshows - takes time to read AND understand the pics) conversions out there, and so much crammed into a small space too. Well done. It is a credit to you.
    Regards Mark in the UK
    p.s. Having read a bit about how the ...'facilities' are abroad, would I be correct in thinking that you've designed your motorhome primarily for European use? I had considered the 'cassette' toilet vs driving over a waste disposal point issue.

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  6 лет назад

      Only reasons I went for the porta-potti rather than say a Thetford C200/400 cassette toilet is because of (a) it's simplicity, (b) I had only one place I could put the shower drain due to sink and chassis locations, and (c) I felt I had cut enough holes in the van. However, the porta-potti is a little awkward to get in and out of the enclosure given it's full of water/waste - not good if you've a bad back. Very few panel van conversions have a proper black tank and US style dumping. In the UK there is very few dump points outside of campsites, unlike the rest of Western Europe, so it has to be a case of disceetly tipping your portapotti/cassette waste down public restroom toilets, or if only away in the camper for a few days, bringing your waste home and pouring down your house loo - not ideal. NZ is also well set-up with just about every town having a public dump point to discourage people dumping in nature areas etc - I really thought Scotland councils would have been more pro-active in this matter, given the huge number of visitors in campers, many wild/freedom camping.
      As an aside, something I saw the other weekend at the Overland Show was a pro-built Sprinter that had fibreglass pods on the sides where the aft side window apertures are, to allow extra inches when building the bed as an east-west - wish I had spotted that three years earlier.

    hi, great build you have done there, looks the nuts, im looking at doing a build soon, im just wondering how you get on with the t7 heater unit and do you think it would be warm enough still in the winter months?

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  8 лет назад +1

      The heater is surprisingly warm for what is essentially a 10cm square car radiator and the van is a small space. However, the fan and ducting is noisy, and the Webasto makes noise as well. I wonder if next time I would plumb in a type-11 300x400 central heating radiator instead. I would also rubber mount the Webasto - I have it attached to the chassis, which transmits some sound and vibration.

    • @88shaunyboy
      @88shaunyboy 8 лет назад +1

      with my build i intend on living in it, i was looking at the webasto and eberspacher night heaters which sound very noisy, but i think if mounted correctly within a well ventilated and sound proof compartment it could be reduced dramatically, but i do intend on thinking through the insulation side dramatically, in theory getting the temp way up high and hopefully maintaining a slow cool over the night

  • @trumpsahead
    @trumpsahead 8 лет назад

    Beautiful workmanship. I couldn't do that, would probably stress out and have a heart attack. Could not see clearly how you laid out the kitchen, looked like it was up against the driving area, which gave me the impression you had no access to and from living area to driving area - I must have been mistaken. It is one of a kind. I personally like the small windows. In my smallish trailer home I tend to keep most curtains drawn because when I'm indoors I like to feel like I'm indoors, it's quite a most comfortable and secure feeling, and I got that immediately looking at your windows, they are perfect; and with cameras today easily installed, you have less glass display which is fine with me.
    That's my critique/opinion, wish I could do this, but you must know the materials available also, which I am in the dark about. Are there Camper van build/parts stores, etc.? Love your work, and your van. Congrats! ciao.

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  8 лет назад

      +trumpsahead Believe me, I had stress! Yes, galley is up against the driving area but there is a 'window' through that I can dive through in an emergency, rather than go out the side door if it's not safe to do so. Another good thing with the small tinted windows is that opportunist thieves need to be 7-foot tall to see what's on offer inside.

  • @edwardcharles9764
    @edwardcharles9764 8 лет назад

    Great van build but for me you've used a lot skill and technology building a top camper, then left out the hand basin in the shower room and I think a fixed cassette toilet would be more fitting than a tied down porta loo after all that work. Looks like an afterthought!

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  8 лет назад

      Edward, that's where you're a tad wrong - a lot of thought went into it. Camper bathrooms are already small as it is, adding a basin just gives something else to take up space and bang into when in there, and successfully hiding/servicing the plumbing is another problem. The galley sink is just outside the door, and as long as good hygiene habits are observed it's not a problem. As for the porta-potti, my folks have a fixed toilet and have had several issues with it, also I didn't want to cut anymore holes in the van (one of the many reasons why I went for a compressor fridge rather than the usual absorption variety. This van was a two year build - plenty of time to think things through.

    • @edwardcharles9764
      @edwardcharles9764 8 лет назад

      Well enjoy it. But for me I like to shave at a bathroom not a kitchen sink and your folks having an issue with a fixed loo, doesn't mean you'll have an issue with yours. There are millions out there which are issue less. I still think the porta potti degrades the quality of the build.

  • @trumpsahead
    @trumpsahead 8 лет назад

    Couldn't get your video out of my mind so viewed again. You're one talented human, and have good taste in spades.
    A thought comes to mind, something about how we use water in a camper: Why is clean water used to flush toilets? I may build a compost toilet in van I hope to buy, but with flush toilets why not set up to draw water from grey water tank as it would mean emptying grey water tank less often and carrying less weight. Is this practical? I realize sink-used water can smell horrendous if left standing in a bucket, but I thought flush toilets do not have standing water in them above ground which would make this idea practical, no? Just a thought, ciao. ps: I love the recessed look on that window - was that practical, I mean is it drafty or a chilly spot? Lol.

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  8 лет назад

      +trumpsahead To recycle the grey water, a fixed marine toilet would be the way to go, drawn through a filter. However, camper toilets (fixed or porta-potti) are more economical than domestic toilets because you can control how much flush is required to do the business.
      The window recess is due to the thickness of the wall/insulation, dictated by the steel ribs. Acrylic double-glazed windows would be warmer but were more than twice the price - perhaps on the next van!

    • @lc10w

      The bed extension has enough friction that it doesn't slide out on it's own accord. I could have made the dining table drop down between the seats to make a third berth, but it means the table would be a smaller surface area - as it is now, there is a good knee overlap and don't need to stretch for our plates, the table is 600x600.

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  7 лет назад +1

      No, it's just for weekends and holidays. With this layout, a LWB LT35/Sprinter would be better as the bed could be a permanent double instead of sliding over part of the dinette like mine does, if one was to live in it long term. With a LWB, if the dinette and garage kept the same dimensions, there would be a serious amount of storage for long term travelling in-between.

      @lc10w  8 лет назад +4

      I've (re)built a few bikes myself, should put a wee vid together of them. Yes, the cost did spiral well beyond what I said to the missus it would cost. I toted up the big bits, fridge, hob et al, but it's the screws, fittings, hose, wire etc that really adds up before you know it. She kept a ledger of the outgoings - I'm on a very short leash now! Underestimated how long it would take too - she reckons that's two years of her life she won't get back. But we are getting good use out of it and having nice trips away together.

    do you regret using such an old base vehicle though?

    • @lc10w
      @lc10w  7 лет назад +3

      I regret using a panel van full stop! Curved walls, limited width, monocoque-ish chassis rails - all led to compromise. My next one will be a box on a cab-chassis 4x4 something - will look like a demountable but permanently fixed. As for the small windows, I wanted a certain amount of stealth when wild camping. We're out and about during the day and by the time we are snug in the back it's getting dark and you can't see much outside anyway.
