Where I live they used to serve troublesome prison inmates what they called, "the milkshake". It actually made nutraloaf sound almost tasty. It was basically table scraps put into a blender with enough water to make it liquify. If the guards were extra angry or just in an especially sadistic mood, they would add their own special ingredients like mustard, juice.from canned salmon, and heaven knows what else. Apparently one could earn several days of nothing but that meal by doing such horrible things as complaining about the normal prison food or refusing to eat what they were served and having the nerve to complain about being hungry a few hours later. I spoke with a prison guard years ago shortly after there had been a crackdown on the mistreatment of inmates at our local, medium security prison. He was very disgusted with the "bleeding hearts" who made them stop serving it, as well as several other cruel practices that this fellow firmly believed were vital to his job satisfaction. I kid you not, he actually said, "My job just isn't as much fun anymore." In his mind at least, there was no reason prisoners shouldn't be forced to serve as playthings for depraved guards and deserved zero human rights. Obviously, while he wasn't the only guard doing those things, he was in the minority, which is why things have gradually improved. He did make it clear that he and his cohorts were completely disgusted with the guards who didn't want to take part in the fun. Even if you subscribe to the idea that revenge and deterance should be the main goals of the prison system, there are plenty of reasons this should trouble you. The biggest reason being, virtually all of those men, would eventually rejoin society. If they aren't protected from such inhumane treatment, the person who comes back into society isn't going to be the same as the one who went in. Odds are, if they are treated like that for years even the very worst of them are going to be much more angry, frustrated, vengeful and cruel than when they went in. Estefanía It’s pretty easy to go to jail. One bad choice and it can happen to anyone. They may be criminals, but they’re still human beings and deserve some measure of decency.
Most prisoners are in jail for non-violent crimes. Treating them like subhumans and degrading them this way ensures they will leave prison with a deep hatred of authority and more likely than ever to commit another crime
We actually had the rare privilege of visiting a couple of prison facilities here in Texas when I was in high school, it was part of my psychology class. This was one of the things they had mentioned that they did to inmates that misbehaved. It was one of the many memorable aspects I had learned about the prison. The others being: - The sign on the inside of the main gate that read "No Hostages Beyond This Point", in which they had explained to us that regardless of your position in the prison, even if you are the warden, any authority you have becomes null and void the moment you are taken hostage. - The fact that inmates of all crimes were allowed in general population. One of the guards had mentioned that there was a woman (we went to one men's and one women's unit) in general population who was one of the most nicest people you would ever speak to, yet you would never know that she was in there for microwaving her infant. - Yolanda Saldivar, the woman who killed the famed tejano singer Selena, reads the Bible. I know this because we were all walked past her cell as we were going on tour. The guards never outwardly said anyting, but there were two guards posted on either side of her cell as we walked past. When I look at her with surprise, and then looked one of the guards, the guard just simply replied with a slightly affirmative "Mmhmm" as they looked away from me. - Inmates make pretty decent socks. There was some type of textile manufacturing that went on in the men's unit, and we were each given a pair. They lasted a really long time.
@@ipissed The most important thing for me was to avoid being sent there. My mother, for whatever reason, used to claim that regular size jeans would "swallow" me, so she always bought slim jeans for me. I hated them, but I wasn't buying them, so I didn't really have much of a choice. I learned to hate them a lot more on this trip. We got to a main area where we were greeted by various faculty, telling us what and what not to do, etc. A guard looked over at me and saw me standing there in my skinny jeans, and cracks a smile at me. Pointing at my pants, he laughed and said "Oh they are gonna LOVE you." At one point while in the men's unit, we get to a "pod" that was on lockdown for fighting. We had to walk across the room and into the observation booth where the guards normally monitored them. As we walked, my other classmates and I immediately caught the attention of the inmates, many of them taking to shouting at us and making it as obvious as they could that they were jerking off to us. Ever since I've had a job, I purchase regular size jeans.
This was very fascinating, thank you. I have to wonder about the appropriateness of taking high schoolers to a jail considering how the prisoners would react, unsurprisingly how you said they did.

Nutraloaf/Disciplinary Loaf is most commonly served to prisoners in solidarity confinement or in psychiatric ward both are areas in the prison that inmates are not allowed eating utensils because of self harm additionally it is normally not served on serving tray but rather on a napkin or paper plate. The Maryland version of Nutraloaf if I remember correctly is vegetarian.

I want to invent rehab loaf. It is like nutraloaf but made entirely from scratch and meant to be delicious because it’s intended to protect high risk patients from self harm not as a means of punishment at all.
I work in a small county jail, and if I fed that or anything approaching that, to my inmates they would riot. Seriously. Incarcerated people have few things to look forward to, especially in small facilities with limited resources. Decent food is one of the things they anticipate and appreciate.
At the TDCJ cofield unit we just took all the food the other inmates were having . mixed it into a pan of corn bread and baked it into a loaf. The inmates only got put on food loaf if they assaulted , or threw something at an officer . the breakfast one was actually pretty good .
My wife and I love your videos! We call it "management meal". We are actually credited with it's invention. In our facility, It is not meant for punishment. I haven't seen one issued in years. It is prescribed by medical or mental health staff, not Uniformed Law Enforcement. It is given to those that are not competent enough to use utensils or will use the untensils/tray for violence, or will hoard the tray in their room, and officers have to retrieve it, and the inmate become violent, but we still want them to get the caloric intake they need to remain healthy. In most cases, it is used until mental health staff can get the inmate's psych-meds to gain effectiveness, and they return to their normal mild mannered state, at which point normal diet returns.
A pretty dangerous mindset depending on the area, but sure, there is potential (I know you're quoting the lovely man on her shirt, may he rest in peace)

thank you for exposing this very specific sort of cruelty of the carceral state, especially in my state. super enlightening. prisoners deserve dignity and this is not it
I appreciate her ominous tone. Normal people don’t take pleasure in punishing other humans for their behavior yet it is necessary. Good parents don’t take pleasure in having to discipline their children but they have to unless they want them to disregard rules and authority. The same goes with adults that don’t want to follow the laws/rules. If someone is already in prison and STILL doesn’t follow the rules, what does that say about that individual?
Emmy - I love your channel and the elegant/dignified and fun way you present things. I don't normally comment, but after reading some of the comments below, I thought I would chime in. At least in the places where I have worked, the Correctional staff don't choose who eats this - the Inmate chooses this, by how they conduct themselves. The Inmates have a right to nutritionally appropriate meals... no matter what... and sometimes an Inmate's behavior is so inappropriate (violence, assaults... whatever) they are put in segregation. If when in segregation they remain inappropriate (such as throwing food back on the staff and a list of other things I won't get into), attempted violence with eating utensils (toward themselves or others), etc. they are served nutraloaf. It has all the nutritional value, without the need for eating utensils and if you get hit with it, you're still ok. It's really not intended as a punishment... it is served in response to a person's behavior and is designed to provide adequate nutrition, without the need to provide a weapon (ie: fork, knife) to the Inmate (who has clearly and in most cases repeatedly demonstrated behavior that warrants those precautions). The contents/ingredients you listed are one of many nutritionally balanced meals, that can be used for nutraloaf. I am not saying it's nice to eat, and it is a shame that there are people who need to be managed like that, but keeping everyone safe (including from themselves) is of course more important than how it tastes :-) Love your videos and thank you for sharing.
You know what else fits the bill for "nutritious, not dangerous if thrown, no need for utensils".... a sandwich. You know what's ten times easier to make? A sandwich. Throw in some carrot sticks, bam. You know how we feed animals? Grinding up random stuff into a nutritionally complete ration with no regard to taste. You are deluded if you think this isn't a gross way of degrading and making another human being miserable. It clearly is. I'm not even saying it's right or wrong but it's ridiculous to try to justify this as anything other than punative.
One of our inmates in administrative segregation actually saved up enough blue plastic trays to make himself a partial suit of armor , and used a stack of plastic trays as a weapon on the 5 man move team !!!! .

It is cruel, but not unusual. Not in for-profit prisons, where they don't want you to become a decent human being. They want you to stay there and if you ever get out, have you come back as soon as possible. They see people as less than human, less even than an animal - just a bag of walking money...

Most prisoners are in jail for non-violent crimes. Treating them like subhumans and degrading them this way ensures they will leave prison with a deep hatred of authority and more likely than ever to commit another crime
Thank you for being respectful.
We actually had the rare privilege of visiting a couple of prison facilities here in Texas when I was in high school, it was part of my psychology class. This was one of the things they had mentioned that they did to inmates that misbehaved. It was one of the many memorable aspects I had learned about the prison. The others being:
- The sign on the inside of the main gate that read "No Hostages Beyond This Point", in which they had explained to us that regardless of your position in the prison, even if you are the warden, any authority you have becomes null and void the moment you are taken hostage.
Thank you for that insight.
So did you learn the most important thing about prison?
@@ipissed The most important thing for me was to avoid being sent there. My mother, for whatever reason, used to claim that regular size jeans would "swallow" me, so she always bought slim jeans for me. I hated them, but I wasn't buying them, so I didn't really have much of a choice.
I learned to hate them a lot more on this trip. We got to a main area where we were greeted by various faculty, telling us what and what not to do, etc. A guard looked over at me and saw me standing there in my skinny jeans, and cracks a smile at me. Pointing at my pants, he laughed and said "Oh they are gonna LOVE you."
At one point while in the men's unit, we get to a "pod" that was on lockdown for fighting.
@@Grahf0 Correctomundo , the only thing you need to know about prison is you don't want to go there.

Wtf is this even possible
Ah, good ol' Pruno... Not that bad if you substitute real yeast for the moldy bread and strain it with something more sanitary than a dirty sweatsock...
BTW, I followed the classic Jarvis Masters recipe - pen.org/recipe-for-prison-pruno/
Inmates out here make it with fermented fruit - call it "squawkie."
I heard from The Infographics Show that Pruno commonly causes alcohol poisoning in prisoners.

I really appreciate the tone that you have in your voice while doing this, it’s a bit solemn but shows respect for the hardships these prisoners endured eating the nutraloaf.
Emmy I love your videos when I see a new one it just makes my day. 😄♥️
🤗🤗🤗
Nutraloaf/Disciplinary Loaf is most commonly served to prisoners in solidarity confinement or in psychiatric ward both are areas in the prison that inmates are not allowed eating utensils because of self harm additionally it is normally not served on serving tray but rather on a napkin or paper plate. The Maryland version of Nutraloaf if I remember correctly is vegetarian.
I’ve never heard of this, this seems so unusual to me like why go through the extra effort to do this? Why not just give them food. Love you Emmy x

I work in a small county jail, and if I fed that or anything approaching that, to my inmates they would riot. Seriously. Incarcerated people have few things to look forward to, especially in small facilities with limited resources. Decent food is one of the things they anticipate and appreciate.
I wish Emmy was my neighbor. I'd be going over to eat all the time. Not nutraloaf but something she makes. I know she's gotta be a great cook.

@@chalsiestaten4556 Totally!!
In most cases, it is used until mental health staff can get the inmate's psych-meds to gain effectiveness, and they return to their normal mild mannered state, at which point normal diet returns.
whats wrong with sandwiches? They dont require utensils either and at least its still recognizable food.
This new serie is great !!!!!

Definitely sounds cruel and unusual to me. Totally unethical imo
this is my favorite channel ever
❤️❤️❤️
thank you for exposing this very specific sort of cruelty of the carceral state, especially in my state. super enlightening. prisoners deserve dignity and this is not it
I appreciate her ominous tone.
I like you just the way you are. And I love your channels. 👍👍👍
The idea of feeding anyone something to punish them is truly horrifying.

She should make her own nutraloaf recipe.
@@claytonpaisley9721 - I respect that you have your own opinion... and I won't call you deluded for having it.
One of our inmates in administrative segregation actually saved up enough blue plastic trays to make himself a partial suit of armor , and used a stack of plastic trays as a weapon on the 5 man move team !!!! .

That does seem like cruel and unusual punishment. Geez!
It is cruel, but not unusual. Not in for-profit prisons, where they don't want you to become a decent human being. They want you to stay there and if you ever get out, have you come back as soon as possible. They see people as less than human, less even than an animal - just a bag of walking money...
