I've since learned that since its 1991 independence, Ukraine has requested to the world to be called simply "Ukraine". I love nothing more than learning something new, so thanks for teaching me and my apologies if I offended any Ukrainian lovelies.
I lived in Lviv, Ukraine for 7 months as a volunteer, back in 2012 - 2013. When I moved there I wasn't expecting to fall in love with Ukrainian food, but I absolutely did. It's comfort food all the way through. I miss вареники/varenyky; the cabbage filled ones were my favorite. Or the dessert ones, with sour cherries. Of course with сметана/smetana, aka. sour cream. I miss all the delicious, flavourfull teas. I drank a lot of raspberry and peppermint teas... I actually didn't like tea before moving to Ukraine, and that completely changed. I also miss квас/kvass, drinking it on top of Дім Легенд next to the car, or the time we got homemade компот/kompot for Ukrainian christmas on January 7th. But what I absolutely miss the most is (if I remember the name correctly) косичка/kosychka, the braided, smoked string cheese. Delicious, salty, fresh... I have had serious cravings since coming back home 5 years ago, and it is impossible to find in Denmark. Which is a shame, because it. Is. Magical
Thank you for your comment! It makes me want to travel to my mother's home country Ukraine 😊. My favourite comfort food growing up (and now) was varenyki, but I cannot buy them in Australia and find them difficult to make nowadays. May I ask how you ended up living in Ukraine? the 'roshen' candies are not meant to be chewed as they're pretty hard for a bite. normally, you just kinda keep them in your mouth slowly sucking (not sure if that's the word) them over time to dissolve them and only at the end when there's not much of it left you chew it up to finally be done with it and reach for another one :P
Also, we don't eat anything on crackers. The pickled tomatoes are usually an addition to other dishes, for example to mashed potatoes. And the cod liver is usually spread on a piece of white or brown bread. The toasts (грінки - {grinky}) in the form you got them are usually an addition to a beer. Restaurants may add them to the salads or soups, but not so often.

@@Dima-dc5mf , i know, i am from Ukraine. But still why would you want to do it? They are too sweet if you crush them at once. Feels like highway to diabete
I went to Ukraine in 2008 and one of the first things we were told by our interpreters is that most of the people in Ukraine hate when you call their country "The Ukraine" it is just Ukraine.
brooklynbaby1987 So thankful you let us know that! And now I also don't feel so strange or alone lol! I am one of those that always thought it sounded better with "the" in front...but I have no idea WHY!😯I guess it is just a "thing" a quirk that hits some people but not others. ? It still confounds me-but now I won't feel so nuts-And I also won't make that mistake if I ever talk to someone or about Ukraine! Why tho? Why! Lol.😳✌🙏😍
Laura Metheny What we were told is that Ukraine was actually called the Ukraine when it was part of the USSR. Since the fall of communism and the USSR, many Ukrainians have a great sense of national pride as an independent country. "The Ukraine" was their identity as part of the USSR; Ukraine (without the, the) is their identity as a free nation.
brooklynbaby1987 Lovely info! Idk if thats it for me-but maybe. To me it was like a grammer thing or something dumb like that. You know like how in English you are supposed to use "an" before a vowel. As in "an old lady" and "a" before a consonant as in "a dumb old lady"? Lol. Sometimes tho even following that rule sounds weird to me. Just for some words. Ukraine isn't the only one I flub I fear. There is another one that is escaping this old lady brain right now.😱Somewhere around Haiti or Jamaica or ? I know there is another. But maybe I will catch it now and not screw THAT one up either! Thanks to all this helpful info! I am with Emmy on that. If I do something wrong or wacky I wanna know! My grandpa used to do devotions over the phone at home and he wrote a couple of books of sayings. I remember him telling us "the day you stop learning or wanting to-is the day you are ready to die". Idk if it was "his" but it was something he lived by. My granny too. Have a great week guys!✌😍😽

Oh my god! Cod liver. Literally the best thing ever! I'm from sweden, and when I was a child we used to have a lot of cod in the baltic sea. It was basically not even fishing. It was "picking up some fish" :-) My mom would simmer the cod liver in salted water with a touch of acetic acid in it. I could literally stuff my face with it! Soooooo delicious! I miss that! We have no cod in the baltic sea anymore. Really sad. I will have to look for this canned version!
I suspect that was the main problem, yes. Also, problems with the quality of the water prevents them from coming back as I understand it. The baltic sea is generally in trouble, environmentally.
YES!! I got obsessed with the cod liver yesterday, and looked in all grocery stores close to my home, but there was no cod liver, either fresh or canned. Luckily I have a multicultural store at work with a russian section, and they had canned cod liver! Interesting enough it was cod from Iceland, canned in great britain with russian writing on the can :-) I am sooooo happy right now. Thank you for bringing this to my attention Emmy! All my childhood memories from glory cod-days came back to me today :-) It's not quite as good as my mothers fresh cod liver (it has a slight canned taste. Strange huh? :-) ), but still absolutely amazing! I ate three cans of it! :-) Again, thank you Emmy for opening my eyes to this!

They not so hard, if it's fresh. It feels more crunchy and taste like peanut butter (for me)

I went to Ukraine in 2008 and one of the first things we were told by our interpreters is that most of the people in Ukraine hate when you call their country "The Ukraine" it is just Ukraine.
brooklynbaby1987 ik I don't get y ppl say "the" b4 that say the country
brooklynbaby1987 So thankful you let us know that!
+aiyanna peoples It's an age thing. People grew up saying it with "the" so it's hard to stop now.
brooklynbaby1987 Lovely info!
So many Ukrainian lovelies! Glad to see people on the upper side of the globe love and support Emmy as well. Hope this video made you guys happy. I really want to try the strawberry tea one day. Cheers from South America :)

As a Ukrainian I definitely appreciate your reaction, but honestly I think those particular sweets suck. They are more like leftovers from Soviet era (except chocolate) and are among the cheapest. If it was me who made the package I'd definitely put something more decadent.
No, I don't think so. I was kinda disappointed when I noticed her pryaniki were not ones with milk filling, but overall the foods she had were pretty close to what I see (and some - eat) every day.

Oh my god! Cod liver. Literally the best thing ever!
I'm from sweden, and when I was a child we used to have a lot of cod in the baltic sea. It was basically not even fishing. It was "picking up some fish" :-)
My mom would simmer the cod liver in salted water with a touch of acetic acid in it. I could literally stuff my face with it! Soooooo delicious!
I miss that! We have no cod in the baltic sea anymore. Really sad.
I will have to look for this canned version!
It's so delicious!
ei96byod what happened to the cod?? Was it overfishing?
Yes. The texture alone! It literally melts in your mouth!
Interesting enough it was cod from Iceland, canned in great britain with russian writing on the can :-)
I am sooooo happy right now. Thank you for bringing this to my attention Emmy! All my childhood memories from glory cod-days came back to me today :-)
It's not quite as good as my mothers fresh cod liver (it has a slight canned taste. Strange huh? :-) ), but still absolutely amazing! I ate three cans of it! :-)
Again, thank you Emmy for opening my eyes to this!
