- Rescue teams in northern Italy report that at least nine people have been killed in a cable-car accident.
As yet there are few details on what happened in the mountains near Stresa - close to the summit of the Mottarone peak, overlooking Lake Maggiore. Rescuers say several people, including children, have been airlifted to hospital. The steep mountainside covered with trees makes access overland difficult.

Italy is always having a high incident of Cable-Car accidents. Makes you wonder if and who does the maintenance and who supplies the construction material. Remember the set-up with the Freeways (Autobahns) and the corruption there. What about bridges that collapse because of construction fraud. Oh, Italy. At it again?
Yeah we know...i live near this cable car and now i am shocked but here in italy there is so much corruption, mayby this time was only unluck but italy have to stop cheaters
@@fraz208 there is no way to stop corruption when the corruption you want to stop makes the laws and are above the laws they make.

Horrific! Bet they figure out that leaving it stationary for over a year with the same tension & slack points made the cable develop points of memory\weaknesses of those areas.
It fell 300 metres apparently..I think it probably got rusty like you said ..
@@mshammond_uk1831 The other thing is when that cable reaches the same point as it was dormant in, odds are it was one heck of a bounce from the cables memory & bends.
@@mshammond_uk1831 I saw the close up picture of the cable overhead. It looked like about 35 meters or so to the cable. There would be no reason to have it that high off the ground from the top. It was almost there.
The cable wasn't even the only problem, there are emergency brakes which were supposed to stop the cable car but staff members DISABLED them because they needed to be repaired and the company didn't want to spend the money needed and shut down the system for a few weeks...
@@GommyCreations The cable is very long in one of the video's, so it would have done nothing for the cable car to keep it from falling and rolling. So sad. Maybe cable from China. How do you know this? Do your work there or know someone who does or you are guessing to get a response and conspiracy theory???
Why not have a safety backup cable installed? Keeping a cable car hanging off 1 cable only is a disaster waiting to happen. Why not have a backup cable? I'm going to guess because of cost-saving and greed. Sure, insufficient maintenance probably was to blame, but this still would have been prevented by having at least ONE backup cable. Elevators have multiple cables, why don't these cable cars too!?
could be a weaker cable with line to people and roof that opens easy in middle or cloth roof so car falls but ppl dangle
There is, usually when the primary cable snaps magnetic brakes automatically clamp down on the secondary cable. Apparently, the brakes failed to activate.
Apparently they lacked maintenance, the authorities are still investigating.
Now fail-safe measures should be added to all systems. (Redundancy in a secondary cable, both running parallel and capable of holding the gondola on each's own.)

The carrying cable has not been inspected properly, the inner strands can rust and not be seen by the naked eye, the usual procedure is to use an electronic ring to read inside the cable construction as it travels along the cable...British Ropes knows all about this technique.
In just one sentence, comfortably sitting at home, very far away from the accident location, you managed to find out the cause, who’s responsible, the solution, insult a country and worship the technological superiority of your own. I can’t think about anything more British than that.
@@ruttolomeo1987 The main cable failed ! How and why. Its a major tragedy for the area and Italy
Don't trust cables and cable cars or the people who say they're safe -- they're in it for the money. Unless of course you don't mind dying, then go ahead and trust them with your life.
Cable cars are statistically way more safe then e.g. trains, cars, planes, busses, cycling ... well no dont trust all of them
@@thomashirmer4951 or every 1000 passengers in 2008, there were 0.000005 deaths. If I'm doing my maths correctly, that is one in every 200,000,000 passengers, or a 99.9999995% non-death carry rate :)
In 2009, same chart - there were no deaths.
The same page looks at the deaths in rail, trolleybus and other forms of transportation, all of which have a higher accident and death rate. So basically, if you're willing to get into a method of transportation on the ground, statistically, you're safer off travelling by gondola/cable-car :)

For context, how does the 2008 number compare to air travel? - Dan Is Fiddling By Firelight Sep 13 '13 at 12:35
@DanNeely no idea, only found the stats for ground-based travel. Generally you're not considering flight for the distances that cable cars / gondolas travel. - Mark Mayo♦ Sep 13 '13 at 13:32

I'm thinking that the question is not amount of fatalities per passenger, but the number of accidents per ride. Some accidents are non-fatal, while some (few) have several fatalities. This isn't shown in the table in your source, though. - Nix Sep 15 '13 at 16:17
@Nix These statistics are generally not measured in accidents per ride, as each gondola may carry different numbers of passengers. It's far more common to measure per x number of persons, as then you can work out the chances for an individual. - Mark Mayo♦ Sep 15 '13 at 23:17
@DanNeely - Air travel is roughly comparable, at around the 1-in-100-million mark: speaking purely in terms of "proper" airlines, not some bloke flying a Cessna around in fog over his farm - Jon Story Feb 17 '15 at 11:21

Sorry, I didn't mean to criticize you. I'm just saying no matter how safe riding in cable cars is compared with other vehicles or devices, that's not as safe as NOT riding in cable cars. This is only the second time I’ve heard of this happening and they said it could never happen again because of triple braiding the cable, 43 died in 1976 when this happened, they really need to find a safer way to transport people up a mountain.
I looked that up, a list shows at least 6 fatal cable car accidents, including the one you mentioned. "The deadliest cable car disaster in history that claimed the lives of forty-three people happened on March 9, 1976, in Italy near the Cavalese ski resort. Forty-three people including 15 children and two cable car attendants died. Only one 14-year-old Milanese girl who was on a school trip survived."
"The Dolomites mountain range in Italy was witness to yet another terrifying cable car disaster on February 3, 1998. The disaster happened near the ski resort town of Cavalese and claimed the lives of 20 passengers on board the cable car. The disaster happened when a US Marine Corps aircraft that was flying lower against the regulations cut a cable that was supporting the cable car of the aerial tramway. The cable snap dropped the gondola 260 ft to the ground killing 20 on board. The aircraft crew members were acquitted due to the absence of evidence. Later, it was discovered that one of the crew members had destroyed a tape that contained incriminating evidence pointing to the involvement of the aircraft crew in the disaster."

Because the previous car did not experience any anomaly before the accident and the dead included 4 Israelies and Italy is easy to infiltrate by foreign powers, I would investigate sabotage. The way I would investigate it is firstly by events that are close in time to the cable failure. Sabotage that is of a longer time frame such as substances that act on the cable to weaken it are very unlikely due to the timing of it is almost impossible. I would use as a slice of analysis everything from below the earth of the point of failure to the atmosphere and space above it even to satellites within range with laser capabilities that can focus on a cable be it civilian, spy, or military. I would not rule anything out. I would investigate anything people or things on the place above or below it close to the interval of the time of failure of the cable.

car ride on the ground pulled by the cable that is higher , wheels on the car , fell trees to make a dirt track . mechanism to stop the car from rolling down if cable fails, not one big car but many one person cars or for families up to five ppl cars , some would not want to be in a car but just walking up with walking speed cable pull assistance holding a handlebar for that maybe pulling near straigth up , would be an easy walk. or could use bike , did it on a ski lift. . other wire maybe moving that holds a line for safety if big car in air and roof of it opens easy in middle if needed when it falls pps heads push roof open and ppl dangle on the safety line.. about rust. wonder if cable greased internally on assembly will it dry out over time, need solvent then thin floating grease to impregnate it that becomes more solid soon by drying, or is it enough to grease it well on outside how often , automaticy by every trip a little , weekly montly yearly would be too seldom mabe . cover w plastic to stp rain w not in use.for months. .deterioration occurred through two principal mechanisms, namely, external and internal fatigue, which is caused by bending over sheaves or drum windings and crushing, which is caused by multilayer drum spooling..finally a good idea, airbags , but not under the car but inside the car under the people, airbags maybe too complex but just a thick floor made from soft but stiff enough bouncy material and the car would have to be higher or rather lower to accomedate for it . so car would hit hard but ppl wuld not feel that hardness of fall cos then right after ppl would hit floor that has a semi hard plate but moves down when hit, and all should have a helmet. sides roof could be soft build too if hit too. but cable holder on top of car is maybe heavy , might it turn car on way down . so try to design car to be falling straight down without turning , maybe some plates on top part to grab air act as stabeliser fins or tiny parachutes . maybe weigts under floor but thats not so good more tenison and costs of transport or .
