      It is easier for them to fantasize about a new tech solving everything. These liberal western states have gotten so soft, and spent so many decades teaching their own young people to be ashamed of their countries, be ashamed of their heritage; to treat patriotism as a sin....a cool new gadget, they understand; they wish they can solve all their problems so simply. But something like the psychology; the cultural preparedness or nationalism required to endure and win a long, serious war (as well as the sacrifice of comforts and conveniences)....this, they cannot dare imagine.

      @@PeterLawton I think he meant peace negotiations will not happen this year, for political reasons - but the longer the West refuses, the more Russia is going to take and solidify their control of eastern and (perhaps soon) central Ukraine. Already in late 2022, EU diplomat sources who had been to Ukraine identified a Russian takeover of Slovjansk and Kramatorsk as the tipping point that would bring about a serious redrawing of Europe's Ukraine strategy, a recognition that it was no longer realistic to give Kiev in blanco support for ever and expect a coming reversal.
      Those two key cities, along with Pokrovsk, are now only about 20-25 km away from the front and they will most likely fall in the next few months. Behind them, there is little in the way of possible fortifications and defence lines so once Russia has taken over those three, the advance towards the Dniepr river would likely speed up.

      Agree, the only thing that reasonably would have had a chance of turning the war around would have been a massive intervention by NATO with their *own* armies, hundreds of their own fighter aircraft (plus most likely a second front in the southern Baltic Sea/Poland/Belarus region). That was never a realistic option seen from the West - NAT0 have no wish to risk a massive bleeding of their own forces and a possible expansion into WW3, and they haven't actually fought a ground war of this kind against a peer adversary for more than half a century - so the framework remains to keep on pumoing nutrition fluid, big money and armament to UKraine, and that in itself is not a winning concept against Russia. UA is a Lost Cause for OTAN but DC, Brussels and London refuse to admit that the game is up. They keep hurting themselves (especially mainland Europe)

      The best explanation I can give for why this is taking so long is a combination of Pro Putin politicians who have deliberately stalled all aid to Ukraine, not just these F-16s, in basically every country that has F-16s to give, not just the US along with aging politicians in those same countries who DO support Ukraine but are following a policy of escalation limitation and management I deeply disagree with. On top of that there's military training for not only the pilots but also the ground support crew like the maintainers and other technicians that needs to happen even if the personnel have experience with soviet equivalent planes, and bureaucratic and logistical issues that need to be planned for and solved so that the Ukrainian F-16s don't run out of spare parts on the first day. The reason DW is reporting on this is because the entire process is a public issue, there might be elements of the process that will not be disclosed but the fact that Ukraine asked for fighter jets and several countries responded that they'd like to donate them is not a secret at all.

      @@peter65zzfdfh Not because of tiny quantities of wonder weapons that often don't work as well as promised. That was the German strategy in late 1944-45. Not exactly effective. Some of them perform well (Javelins, Bradleys), some are a huge disappointment, inferior to the Soviet stuff they were supposed to replace (like Challenger tanks which kept getting stuck in mud and had to be withdrawn from the fight, or bayraktar drones which are basically not used anymore because they are so easy to jam with electronic warfare countermeasures). The willpower and tactics as well as just having enough of everything is more important than any particular "game changer," especially as most of the real fighting is still done with T-series tanks, Kalashnikov rifles, RPGs etc. That, and the fact that Russia has not had very brilliant tactics, thank goodness.

    One simple question, if F16 can beat Russian, why do we need F22 and F35?

    • @WangMingGe
      @WangMingGe 2 месяца назад +2

      Yes....people often overlook that the F16 was introduced in the 1970s and even then, it wasn't the top line fighter (that was the twin-engine F15); the F16 was the cheaper, more mass-production-oriented fighter. And, of course, much has changed in the decades since then. Russia does not have a lot of its new generation fighters as a percentage of its air force, but they vastly outnumber the amount of (old, worn-out) F16s promised to Ukraine.
