So I recently bought a canoe, and then I came across this video, and also found out that my dad had an old trolling motor he doesn't use. So I got inspired and created my own version of what you did. I actually even got the same steering wheel. I will post some pics and or video when I get a chance. But thank you for the inspiration!
*This makes my old motor look like a toy **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it's well built. I haven't had it on the water yet, but I'm very sure it will perform just fine.*
That is a very inventive steering system. I like the nautical wheel. I bought a tin boat off an old timer and he had a pulley system that he ran across the transom on both sides and along the gunnels to the middle seat and along the front of it. The line was one piece and when he wanted to steer he just grabbed the line and pulled it side to side. Very simple, but effective.
Man I Dig it! Brother you are my hero for sure!! I have been wanting to build something like a stick steering system for my mini aluminum boat that I am currently customizing. Thanks friend for sharing your awesome build. -Tim in MI
Thanks this is helpful. Got to set up a steering wheel on my old Coleman scanoe to save my 68 year old back. That twisting around to steer is no fun for a whole day fishing. Never mind looking for monster catfish, I'd be looking out for monster gators! We only have the occassional moose or loon up here in Maine. Love the threaded rod idea. Putting one on my motor asap and then will rig the rest similar to your rig. Need a Jolly Roger on that craft, too.
Never seen any gators in brackish waters I go in. Have seen small shark and a couple close up encounters with big ol manatees. One was using my prop as a snout scratcher one day. I mostly use my kayak these days but big red still serves her purpose indeed...well not lately this stupid red tide sucks! And I do have a huge time flies when your having rum jolly roger in my shed could hoist that up but my luck the wind will just blow me around or Id be boarded by the coast guard ha hope your rig turns out good thanks for watching.
I have the same scanoe in green got it for same price in 18', the same 90's minkota troller was given to me. Last year I bought a suzuki 2.5 and if I have it weighted correctly I can run it a full throttle without sinking the transom or bow steering. Now all I have to do is get a steering wheel.
i have been running 2 canoes with the standard side motor mount - (one wood cedar & one grumen aluminum- canoes ) - which you can add to a square back canoe. also. You can purchase - made of wood - complete with metal mounting clamps for $35.00 on -ebay. The minnkota tiller comes along the side - extends forward - left (port).side - works perfect even though it is offset from the centerline - you will set it up so the prop does not strike canoe on turning - it will be clear to you. With the tiller that extends (slides in and out) you do not sit sideways in the canoe. It is at about low shoulder height. So all that steering wheel crap in front- getting in your way is not needed . at all. (his counterbalance weight in front - for when the girlfriend is not in the boat - is a good idea) further more with the tiller, offset I can stand in the boat under power as you Have the tiller to hold onto - but it helps to have that counterweight in the front - and fairly smooth water - never had problem even as i hit submerged branch -you just sit down fast (not saying you couldn't have problems) but this allows you stretch your legs thus allowing for more canoe time- the girlfriend has not stood up- Have done it many many times - be brave after year or so canoeing - the tiller acts as a brace to hold on to and gives you all you need. its actually easier if your moving. Anyway I applaud your hard work but its all just in the way. ps electric trolling motor extends the fun time in the canoe probably four fold by the way I'm 64
Been a looooong while since I took Big Red out but stay tuned for the next video coming soon of a full functioning center console...I removed the control head of the motor and gonna mount it to the cooler helm next to the steering wheel and run all 5 wires back to motor ..should be interesting!
@@shaunseverin8870 yea man, I've been patiently waiting to take it out for a trial run but seems like it's been raining a month straight over here lol.

Love the Coleman Scanoe. Spent many happy hours in that big blue walrus on the Cape Fear River in NC. Great boat as long as you don't have to turn it fast...but it does take a beating so it's not really that important to miss big boulders in the river. Sucks if you get pinned though. Now in Bali looking for ideas for a boat I want to build. Congrats you made the boat building study playlist👍
I just gotta say thanks for watching and the comments...I pretty much uploaded this silly video so my friends and family could check out something I threw together because I was sick of sitting sideways in my canoe to use the tiller, I had no idea it would get this many views...now if I only had video of me hooking both of my feet together with a topwater chug-bug lure up here or the various other strange happenings to me around this stretch of Old Tampa Bay...legend has it a cursed Tampa Triangle exists down by the Skyway, but I think I found my own in the upper bay that's for sure...stay tuned
Great idea. I am about to purchase a square back canoe and plan to put a trolling motor on it. I noticed that when you turn your steering wheel to the right, it goes to the left and vice versa. Is that intentional? to make it go the other way you can just reverse the way it winds on the rod. Great ide!!! Looking forward to rigging something similar on my boat.
Yea that was a minor oversight I was just happy it actually worked..I been too lazy to change it plus I havent been out plundering the high seas much since this vid was shot due to the birth of my daughter few months before...but I prefer my canoe to my kayaks any day..they are great value and mine holds about 800lbs...but on the other hand, Id take my sitontop yak if I'm off the beach in the Gulf that could get messy with me and a canoe lol
I have a big trolling motor that was a bow mount on an old bass boat it parted out. It is foot controlled so it already has the cable system. I've been trying to figure the best way to make it like the old stick steer boats. Hadn't even thought of throttle yet.
Boat fenders are 5x22 from walmart but rarely use them this canoe is pretty stable. I did not want the fenders to create drag in the water so thats why I did them like that and if for some reason the canoe gets tippy the bumper smacks the water and actually pushes back
SHAUN, I HAVE A 14 FOOT SQUARE STERN WATERQUEST AND JUST BOUGHT A WATERSNAKE TRACER- 54LB/42" SHAFT FOR IT. WILL ADD A SWIVEL SEAT AND A LARGER BATTERY/COOLER TO ADD ICE AND SUPPLIES. JUST BOUGHT A HAMPTON SHIP WHEEL FOR 19.00 ON EBAY, BUT SINCE IT IS JANUARY IN COLORADO I HAVE A COUPLE OF MONTHS TO ENGINEER THE CONTRAPTION. SOOO, IF YOU ADD A 50 WATT SOLAR PANEL, WHICH I DO, THERE IS YOUR CHARGE AWAY FROM HOME WHILE YOU ARE ON THE WATER.....THANKS, FOR THE GREAT VIDEO, AND PUT ON A PIRATES FLAG WHILE YOU ARE AT IT!! I just bought that same canoe & just starting to get it set up. I heard you mention Tampa Bay. What trolling motor do you use? I fish mostly fresh/brackish, but considering a saltwater model to I can hit the calm salt creeks as well.
1Krider the motor I got is rated for freshwater but it's been fine so far and I put it in a storage tub with freshwater and run it to rinse it off...I think the riptide line is built for saltwater but it's double the price
Cool. I ended up going with the Newport Vessels NV series - 46lb thrust. It's rated for saltwater and a lot cheaper than the popular brands. I've used it twice & so far so good on my canoe.
+1Krider There are a few suggestions for constructing boats: Give yourself plenty time. Use ready made boat plans. (I discovered about these and more on Denelle Boat Builder website )
This canoe is really stable so I don't use the pontoon system much but I initially had it touching the water and it just slowed the boat down. What I was going for with this design is an insurance policy usually if I have another person in the boat that would cause it to be a little more tippy, or big ol manatees surfacing right next to me always makes me nervous so if there's a sudden list to the side the boat bumper will bounce me back up that's pretty much all I needed. Basically pvc pipe and boat dock bumpers
I added a rudder to my e-kayak. The rudder is controlled with a very simple push pull lever. No lines, pulleys, or rigging was required. Here's a vid of my project ruclips.net/video/yrzq08gDtkI/видео.html
Very cool and effective. Yea I added a rudder myself called Bull Nose rudder got on amazon that clamps right onto the shaft..proves useful in the tide currents. What size battery you got both those motors running on? I had a Malibu Kayak myself 20 years ago ha
Dude what a great setup and the pirate ship wheel is perfect for Tampa, assuming you're a Bucs fan. This is probably a dumb question but why do you need the battery? Is it power steering or something?
Thanks for watching...HA Reid Sheppard ladies and gentlemen how the hell u been...yea next time your in Florida we will have to run some under the boat neon lights and put the custom amp rack on it 1997 style haha
I am considering putting stabilizers (crab cage buoy floats) on my canoe, which is not a square back, and have been looking at a video "bird of prey" stabilizer, but I like yours better because it does not stick out to the side far like that one does. Yours looks quite stable, however I realize the molding of a square back canoe is such that it makes it more stable than a non-square back. Would you trust the system like yours on one like mine? (regular canoe, not square back) Would you feel safe standing in your canoe with the stabilizers you have?

You should try running the pully system inside pvc pipes, so they sit on the floor. Just like the wiring for the battery.

2 questions. 1. What size are the boat fenders you are using? 2. How well does the boat fender's stabilize the canoe being that close to the hull?
Boat fenders are 5x22 from walmart but rarely use them this canoe is pretty stable. I did not want the fenders to create drag in the water so thats why I did them like that and if for some reason the canoe gets tippy the bumper smacks the water and actually pushes back
