This is one of my favorite songs in the history of recorded music. Steve Windwood brings the complete package. His guitar playing - which is under appreciated - is bluesy, soulful and tasteful. Just perfect for this song. I'll be playing this one over and over.
40 plus years in the music biz and this guy and Eric Clapton are still showing the newer fans how classic rock guitar and vocals should be played with soul.
I am lucky enough to do local blues/funk gigs with Wally. Wally I love you man! Winwood is not a speed demon. He plays tasty, melodic guitar. To me his guitar playing is sounding better than ever. Like Jeff Beck, he just keeps getting better... His vocals and keyboard playing... still incredible
Steve Winwood is one of the greatest musicians alive! No one else sings like him! He plays 12 different instrments! Hendrix said " do you think he would play with me? Yea! Electic Ladyland "Voodoo chile" Still today Steve' sounds the best! Thanks for ALL his music!
You know what's sad is that I saw him in 1988 "Roll with it" tour and I didnt' realize the legend of Stevie. I went knowing only about 3 of his songs. I enjoyed the show thoroughly and became a huge fan after the show. But I never got to see him live again !! He's one of the greats
Such a great musician - brilliant, flowing guitarist, plus an atmospheric keyboard player. And the voice ! So evocative and emotive yet kept in check (English !). Steve has never lost his musical integrity.
Steve Winwood has way too much talent. You could tell he knew he was kicking ass by the smile he had on his face at the start of the second solo. I wish Eric Clapton had kept some of his 60's fire like Steve has.
Wow sooooooo good, I remember those great days, just heard a remake of this on the radio today, just terrible, its never the same, their hearts and souls are not the same as they were back then.
stevie baby sugar honey! i've loved your talent, style and class since i was 14 and first heard spencer davis, then traffic, then blind faith... saw you in chicago this summer and you still fill my heart!
From moment 5:01 onwards makes me greatful that I love Rock music. Long Live Rock n Roll. We used to rock to these tunes in the 5's Chatsworth, DBn, SA. Wow those were the days
Saw him last year at Summer-fest. (Milwaukee,WI.) He opened for Carlos Santana,,, one of the best concerts I've seen in my 35yrs of concert going. Steve hasn't lost a thing, everything was spot on.
Remember hearing this for the first time late one night on WNEW-FM in NYC. It was like an anthem and I was lifted to another place by the music. I didn't think anything could be better than the original recording but this live version blows that away. SW's vocal has all the perfect nuances of the original and more. His phrasing on the guitar is dead on flawless. He makes it look effortless and you can see him enjoying himself too. He is a gift to us.
Wow, this is up there with Santa Monica most definitely. Especially the Jeff Beck "Bolero" nod at the end of it. 3rd favourite after the album (obviously) and Santa Monica. Wow. Just wow. Peace
Harding42, I agree! I am embarassed to say that even though I listened to him in Spencer Davis, Traffic, Cream and Blind Faith when a kid, I always thought of him as an amazing singer. Then I saw him play when Traffic was inducted into the Hall of Fame and he completely floored me with his guitar playing (as did Prince who turned the place out with a George Harrison song!). Saw an interview with him on CBS Sunday Morning recently at his place in England and I like him even more.
Wow ! Guitar is his "second" instrument, yet he is in my top five players. He is also the best vocalist ever to come out of England along with John Lennon. To cap it all, he wrote great songs like this one and led one of the most musical bands ever. Stevie has never compromised his incredible musicianship. We are so privileged to be able to enjoy such genius.
have been listening to this rock prodigy since 1965 - Spencer Davis Group..but then he was just the baddest teenage Hammond B-3 player and singer song-writer!! Now he takes any instrument and bends it to his liking....just like before...never will tire of his work! seems like some other musicians have noticed him too...?
stevie, baby, sugar, honey! you got talent, style and class. i've loved you since i first heard spencer davis when i was 14 years old...then traffic, then blind faith...saw you in chicago this summer. your sound fills my heart, it does.
i listen to these songs performed decades after the 60's and always think this: the soul of the lyrics doesn't ring true because the experience of the performer -namely angst and youthful exuberance- isn't there anymore! of course that's a shame but, listening to the instrumentals is a different story. a musician is a musician is a musician and Winwood is immortal. Rock on!
Wonderful performance of an all time great song. If you've never heard the song : 'Sea of Joy' featuring Winwood's early sound I highly recommend it. One of the most compelling vocals I've ever heard!
This was the first song I ever played with my very first cover-band. We went on to pay tribute to Steve Winwood both when he was with Traffic and thereon, by covering much of his/there material. Thanks Steve and friends.
My/Our Gerneration of Musicians 60's 70's are like my Grandparents Generation. The absolute Best of all time. We would like to have them back but we just cannot. It's not supposed to be that way friends. We had them, we loved them and still do but no other can replace them. Ever.....
SAW HIM IN "YES" T ENSEMBLE FREE CONCERT JUST AFTER THEIR FRAGILE ALBUM RELEASE IN 1971!! DELAND, FLORIDA ROCKED THE WORLD---THAT TWO-HANDED,TWO KEYBOARD JUMP REALLY AMAZED THE SCENE--HE RULED THE NIGHT--ALL NIGHT--!
Great song. Didn't realise the SW was such a great guitarist! Drummer is a monster as well. Songs from this era need to be passed on the the youger generation.
One of the BEST ever! He's my Dear MR Fantasy when he sings and plays that guitar like he's making love to it! xx Nothing like a man who knows how to make a guitar cry mm mmm mmmm x
Got that right.. I really like this song.. reminds me of babysitting for a "hip" couple who had this album and I'd listen to it (low sound so I could hear the baby lol) and while it was a bit before my time, it touched me strongly. His voice is unique, very good and he shows he can do it live as well in this video. Now that's something.
I saw Steve open for the Dead the same summer as this vid, June 20 2003. Steve came out and "guested" on this song with the Dead backing him. Awesome. He also did Voodoo Child (slight return) with his own band. Whew!
Great song, seen him perform it when he was with Traffic. This is a better version, great Guitar solos.Steve was born in the next street to me in Bimingham England. never met him though. Mike
Sometimes you have tape rolling at just the right time. The best version of this song I've ever heard.
This is one of my favorite songs in the history of recorded music. Steve Windwood brings the complete package. His guitar playing - which is under appreciated - is bluesy, soulful and tasteful. Just perfect for this song. I'll be playing this one over and over.
Hell Yes! I saw Steve 2 nights in a row at the Fillmore about a year ago....this tune is always the highlight.... What a voice....What chops!
DAMN!
40 plus years in the music biz and this guy and Eric Clapton are still showing the newer fans how classic rock guitar and vocals should be played with soul.
Winwood - the low-key, unsung hero of Rock and Roll. He's as good as he was in the 1960's and 1970's. Steve's the best!
One of the best vocalists, ever. Good stuff.
A great performance by one of the great talents of Rock 'n Roll.
Keep on rockin', Steve.
Thank-you mister fantasy for a absolutely perfect version of this track,id hate to think what rocknroll woulda been without you
I am lucky enough to do local blues/funk gigs with Wally. Wally I love you man!
Winwood is not a speed demon. He plays tasty, melodic guitar. To me his guitar playing is sounding better than ever. Like Jeff Beck, he just keeps getting better...
His vocals and keyboard playing... still incredible
That was Terrific You cannot beat that with a stick ! been listenin' to Stevie for well over 40 years, he da' man
Steve Winwood is one of the greatest musicians alive! No one else sings like him! He plays 12 different instrments! Hendrix said " do you think he would play with me? Yea! Electic Ladyland "Voodoo chile"
Still today Steve' sounds the best! Thanks for ALL his music!
Epic. Winwood is a genius. His set w/ Clapton at the 2007 Crossroads Festival was unforgettable.
It's always good when Stevie plays, he makes everyone else around him better too. I think he's the best all around musician of his era.
I didn't realize what a great guitarist Winwood is. He really smokes on this one!
Something to make us all happy!!!!!!! Thank you dear musicians
Makes life good no matter what befalls us daily.
Timeless.
You know what's sad is that I saw him in 1988 "Roll with it" tour and I didnt' realize the legend of Stevie. I went knowing only about 3 of his songs.
I enjoyed the show thoroughly and became a huge fan after the show.
But I never got to see him live again !!

His voice, his music puts me in such a state of mind. I love ability to alter how I feel. Takes me back to a time of such goodness and change.
same here
realmente tienen razón los libros cuando dicen que steve winwood tiene una inteligencia musical superior a lo normal, fabuloso!
This song captures some essence from that late 60's early 70's time period, that was in the air and spirits of people.
Wow sooooooo good, I remember those great days, just heard a remake of this on the radio today, just terrible, its never the same, their hearts and souls are not the same as they were back then.

The evening sunset added a nice back drop to the performance .
As awesome as Winwood's guitar work is, it seems he is out shined by that awesome drummer! WOW!

From moment 5:01 onwards makes me greatful that I love Rock music. Long Live Rock n Roll.
We used to rock to these tunes in the 5's Chatsworth, DBn, SA. Wow those were the days
The voice, the talent, the youthful demeanour, still intact 40 years on from Mr Fantasy. This song has always been outstanding.
Saw him last year at Summer-fest. (Milwaukee,WI.) He opened for Carlos Santana,,, one of the best concerts I've seen in my 35yrs of concert going. Steve hasn't lost a thing, everything was spot on.
One of the best Classic rock song and musicians of all time!

my favorite Steve Winwood song hands down!!!!! Nice!
He is a legend....by all means and still has his youthful good looks! He must be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, right? he rocks..
Wow, that was truly amazing..Winwood, I believe, is one of the best vocalists of our lifetime...
awesome vid......this is one of my favorite tunes to play, and add sax to of course!
This guy is amazing. He plays every goddamn instrument known to man, and he's been around since the Dark Ages.
I recognize that guitar! Winwood plays it well!
What great memories. I am so glad I experienced the rock music of the 60's and 70's. Steve is a genius.
Steves voice is still so wonderful. He is one of the best.
A musician's musician
Wow, this is up there with Santa Monica most definitely. Especially the Jeff Beck "Bolero" nod at the end of it. 3rd favourite after the album (obviously) and Santa Monica. Wow. Just wow.

I totally agree with you. Steve should have his own Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He helped write the book on music in many ways.
Steve Winwood is an excellent musician. I keep coming back to this vid thinking "oh yeah I forgot how good this is."
just brilliant! brings back so many memories!one of my favourite singer/players of all time.
Wow ! Guitar is his "second" instrument, yet he is in my top five players. He is also the best vocalist ever to come out of England along with John Lennon.
