A lot of people don't realize what a great guitarist Steve is because they've got visions of him at 15 sitting at that B-3 singing "I'm A Man" or whatever, but man he has some scary chops on the six-string. I've been a huge fan of Clapton for more than 40 years, but I saw their tour together in 2009 and Steve gave as good as he got when he and Eric traded riffs. A true wild talent. His kind don't come along very often.
Oh I agree 100% I saw them together and noticed the same thing. On another note it’s sad as hell seeing Jerry Garcia in this condition. He was such a special musician in his prime. Heroin is evil.
Where are the children of the 70's? Where have you gone? I just woke up. People were nicer, music was amazing and I want to go home, but the music never stopped.
Took me out of my gloom, I can tell you that. I'm in the midst of the worst time in my life. Listening to this filled me with hope & gratitude. Now I have a song in my heart.
One of my best trips ever , purple micro-dot .watched huge notes flying from them past me .I kept turning around watching those music notes drift away.Great concert.
Wish Winwood and Garcia had been in a group together or at least made an album. These are probably my 2 all time favorite musicians. This is pure magic.
Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic... Steve Winwood goes all the way back to 1963 when he was a Lad of 15 years. Seeing him on stage with Jerry just plain rocks my world! RIP-Jerry
Has Clapton ever shared a stage with Garcia? Their very different players with very different styles. I'd like to hear how they blend.. If anybody knows of a RUclips vid with Clapton and Garcia together, please message me. I haven't located one.
Look at that smile on Jerry's face! It's everything that makes anything OK... It's like my faith... Jerry's my vessel to God, righteousness, benevolence and PEACE, Lalania Lee thielen, first Dead show, didn't even know they were in town, Man, someone has a plan, that's for damn sure, and Honestly I am Grateful! Xoxo
Good to see the smile...the rest of his face, a man drowning in addiction. To me, these times are bitter sweet. Its rockin version for sure. But I'd trade this and all other jams for Jerry in good health.
An interesting thing about "measure our pain" is that he was married to Yoko and Yoko is a name of a famous (to the Japanese) poet. Poems are 'alpha & omega' . . . words . . . "I am alpha & omega . . ." . . . Jesus. Oops! Oh, well.
the energy of nature can be channeled in the most amazing things if we are open to it .these musicians ARE CHANNELS FOR THE ENERGY THAT could be conceived as "god" ….or something like that ,,,more dabs
This song came on the radio shortly after I learned my Dad had died in an RV accident (87). I turned it up loud so the neighbors wouldn't hear me bawling. And I felt like the lyrics applied to him.
About 2 minutes in, it was obvious that this would be great...then it kept getting better. Thank you Mr. Garcia. Thank you Mr. Winwood. And thanks for posting this.
Dude, I was so glad to read your comments today. Every time I start watching Jerry videos I break out in tears. Tears of joy, sadness, happiness, and I just can't explain it to anyone. His guitar playing just makes me feel all warm and at home. It's been 18 years for God's sake and I'm still crying.....
The master of voice Stevie- The master of guitar- Jerry. Plus one the greatest songs ever written. Dancing everywhere. This is life! RIP. Jerry is not the only one we have lost in this band!
I'm a big Dead fan and I've seen them and Ive seen them a couple dozen times. Never had the change to see Winwood. That being said, I prefer Winwood's guitar playing over Jerry's. Jerry Garcia used heavily modified custom guitars, tone of effects (including a guitar synth, but his tone was almost always the same. Jerry played a lot of quick 1/16th notes and 1/8 notes and his solos were way too monotonous.
+Led ZeppelinFan I agree with the Jerry critique but you gotta realize he was in the end days of a brutal disease so you can't really judge based on this performance or those from really any of the 90's. If you want to see true greatness check out the Dead's performance of Morning Dew from Cornell '77. True masterpiece. It'll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up
Yeah he had bad carparal tunnel and diabetes and a heart condition,he did do a lot of shredding that weekend The grateful dead is just an awesome thing to do
This is genuine shivers down the backbone territory! Steve's voice sounds even more soulful here than it does on the original 1967 album version...if it were at all possible!!
it is my 53rd birthday. I worked hard ALL day. and got home and prepared myself something DECENT to have for dinner. I was in the mood for welcome to the canteen, and stumbled across THIS! i cannot fu**ing believe it. what a wonderful birthday present this REALLY IS. the good lord above has a certain amount of mercy, for some of us creatures, I tell you- wow. magnificent. thank the good lord. take it easy, everyone, happy memorial day.
An excellent version if there ever was one. I remember the GD killing it on Dear Mr Fantasy in Hampton spring tour 87. Its nice to see Jer killing it 7 years later and a year before he died. I love how they close the song Traffic style. Back in college we'd spend Friday night's dosing and listening to Traffic, Dead, Zappa, Airplane, Love, Hendrix....needless to say we'd be up all night with a constant mind blower going.
Brother 52 this year, Grew up India and have the same exact feeling as you did. Thank you for the wonderful articulation. Amazing that classic rock straddling across multiple generations, multiple cultures and continents can still unite us as one. Peace, my friend. God bless you..
I was at this concert. This was taped in Las Vegas. It was in August! IT WAS SO DAMN HOT, a camel passed out in the parking lot, and it was a Hippie camel! Traffic opened for Garcia. Their last song was You Can All Join In. EVERYBODY was on their feet despite how hot it was! This was taped later during Garcia's set. Steve Winwood came out to sing this with Garcia's band. People went nuts during the last part of this song. It was fabulous!
Lengo67 I love hearing stories of the Grateful Dead or anything within that genre of music (shows and such) of that era !!! I feel that was the era i should have lived in ... I missed it by two decades. I was born in '79!!!
I honestly thought the Avetts had a shot at becoming a touring force not fully like the Dead but as close as any other band could get- then they done F’d up and signed w/ Rubin now the entire fan base has become VERY wealthy white folk and that’s it- pre Carpenter their shows had a vibe that put me close to where these ones did- but it was the people, sadly like myself we all tossed the koolaid and moved on- they’re special but lost my respect by selling out
Someone posted that this concert was in Vegas, July '94. If so, I was there! SO bitter-sweet listening to The Dead. In 1994, I thought I knew exactly who I was and where I was going. Career on track. Steady GF of 6 years. Great friends. Not a care in the world. We hit every Dead show within 500 miles of Los Angeles in my VW bus. One year later my career was in shambles, GF gone, and Jerry was gone. It took 6 months of bumming around Europe before I took some personal stock. I came back to the U.S., resurrected my career, met the love of my life, and started a family. But I will always associate the music of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead with that joyful and carefree period in my life. Thanks for posting.
I was at the Vegas shows in 1994! So damn hot unreal but the Traffic Band really laid it out and the venue though hot was really nice. It was 116 the entire weekend. Second hottest place on Earth that weekend but we made it through. I recently recovered a lot shirt I sold during hard times of the Vegas shows because I went hunting them down after hearing the new Dead and Company who by the way have just announced Summer Tour 2017!!!
Brent was a tortured spirit who is sorely missed. I think the combination of his passing and the car bomb in the parking lot were too much for Jerry. And for the record, you are 100% Correct.
This is beautiful and heartbreaking to see. Jerry WAS this song, and here at the end of his time, the life low in his body, after giving so much to everyone else that he has little left, did he truly become one with this song. The circle completes and closes. We didn't mean to, but we literally loved Jerry to death. RIP brother, thanks forever...
The era never died just transformed, born in 89 the classics kill this dubstep bullshit everyone my age listens to, unfortunately never got to see Jerry, but technology has brought one good thing; him and his music lives eternally.
One of the best songs of all times! I was in 9th grade when I first heard it back in the day. Makes me proud that as such a young girl I had such good taste in music. Young people today have no idea of what music is supposed to sound like. Sad!
Im 15, ma’am!? 😅🤣 I love all ‘good’ music, in fact people call me a music snob, and I’m not afraid to say I know more classic rock ‘trivia’ than most ‘boomers’ but yeah, I mostly agree with you.
Obviously, Jerry was just loving this opportunity to play with Winwood again. Regardless of their different styles and apparent lack of rehearsal, Jerry got his licks in and the band rocked it out. But you gotta love watching Jerry have so much fun playing.
For those of you dumping on Jerry you need to know he passed soon after this performance. How do you feel now? We lost a very talented and legendary guitarist and composer. I for one am glad he was having a good time.
Jerry Gracie will live on forever his presence is all around and stronger then ever. Just look at all the deadbeats getting stronger every day. Loved Garcia
Robert Sousa I for one love and understand the importance of the spiritual movement. the absolute final frontier of an organic contribution to the human soul.
O his will always be one of the best songs that I will always love Like Cherry Garcia Ice Cream. Happy Saturday as my work day winds down. It is time for the concert portion of my very incredible Saturday. I hope that everyone else is having just as happy Saturday as I am. Peace & be as well as you can.
I am one of those children, grew up on old jazz and Jerry. We are still here, and so are you. Occupy Wall Street. The music never does stop, and we are still here. We've never left!!
Saw them for 2 days at RFK stadium for this tour. Traffic was better than the Dead and I LOVE the Dead. Seen them 35 times. They opened and friends of mine didn't want to be bothered. I was like "BUT IT'S TRAFFIC !!! Stadium was about 1/4 full. Sat down on the field about 25 yards from the stage. 2nd day they played an acoustic set and played "John Barleycorn". Best moment of my year. Been listening to that album that my older brother brought home when it came out. NEVER thought I'd get a chance to see that. 20 years had gone by since its release by that time.
?laying back? i (respectfully) disagree Exiles800... jerry was ALL OVER that song -to extent that it SOUNDED LIKE A GRATEFUL DEAD TUNE!! TERRIFIC, nevertheless! peace.
This is a great piece by great artists. As a musician, I know how easy it is to heat up a tune, bring it to a fervor, and the consummate Mr. G. cools it until the big release. You can see the love shining out of this guy. What a nice show! Thanks for posting this. As I watch it again, I am reminded how the narrative connected with the lives of these musicians, especially Mr. Garcia, who had a clan dependent on his playing. The price of big love like this is often bittersweet.
I'd just got out of prison...I don't remember much but the Liberty, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Dear Mr Fantasy is over one hour late on this night...and Jerry played Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner during the fireworks... I really wanna hear that show & encore, please Nebraska Brian
First time I've heard someone say "a man who needs no introduction" and actually not introduce them😂
Couldn't have if he tried, over the roar of the crowd; but he knew that.
Was when traffic opened for the Dead. Crowd was deadheads they don't need an introduction
@@mikegee4197 Thanks. I didn't know that. Explains a lot.
That was an amazing double billing!!!!
Jerry needs no introduction, he Jerry for goodness sake!!! (~);}🤙♥️💀⚡🌹🎶✌️
I was actually born on July 9th, 1995, the Grateful Dead's last concert
A lot of people don't realize what a great guitarist Steve is because they've got visions of him at 15 sitting at that B-3 singing "I'm A Man" or whatever, but man he has some scary chops on the six-string. Also an amazing songwriter and singer, too, obviously!
Totally agree....known as a keyboardist but a GREAT guitar player
10 YRS AGO BUT STILL CORRECT
Fronting for Slowhand didn't let Stevie glisten very brightly.
We're still here.. don't worry❤❤🎉🎉😂😂😊😊
Took me out of my gloom, I can tell you that. I'm in the midst of the worst time in my life. Listening to this filled me with hope & gratitude. Now I have a song in my heart.
hope you are ok dude
Hope things are much better! Would love to share music with you if you want.
Hang in there brother
Oh I hear you thankyou Mr Fantasy.
One of my best trips ever , purple micro-dot .watched huge notes flying from them past me .I kept turning around watching those music notes drift away.Great concert.
Was this a Vegas show?
@@mr.knowitall6440 Hey I saw them in Vegas it was incredible!
Settle down, Beavis.
Jerry IS (STILL) LEGENDARY!
My personal very favorite, purple microdot. Those were the days, never to be repeated. So many of us are dead.
I WAS THERE AND IT WAS FABULOUS ❤️⚡️💙
Wish Winwood and Garcia had been in a group together or at least made an album. These are probably my 2 all time favorite musicians. This is pure magic.
I really miss Jerry
Almost 20 years gone. Luckily his ghost is everywhere.

Two of the most beloved musicians on the planet, surrounded by people who love and respect them
Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic... Steve Winwood goes all the way back to 1963 when he was a Lad of 15 years. Seeing him on stage with Jerry just plain rocks my world!
RIP-Jerry
Absolutely. I love all of those groups. I love jerry as well as The Grateful Dead.
I most certainly hope that Jerry is resting in peace.
Some psychedelic generated sounds to take us out of this gloom.
How about Jim Capaldi, the drummer?! Great musician!!
randy95023 well, i go all the way back to 1960, but winwood has me beat in the music department.... and the cool department....
Has Clapton ever shared a stage with Garcia? Their very different players with very different styles. I'd like to hear how they blend..

Jerry was a brilliant musician. His style and tone are undeniable..........He and Traffic nailed this tune.

Jerry is creative genius
Beautiful jam. I love the smile on Jerry's face!
It's awesome to see Jerry smiling like that.

Good to see the smile...the rest of his face, a man drowning in addiction. To me, these times are bitter sweet. Its rockin version for sure. But I'd trade this and all other jams for Jerry in good health.
Listening to stuff like this is the closest I ever come to a religious experience.

I want to go back to the 70's- Cathy Herrmann
Didn't realize I already posted this !
I think Jerry is laying back in order to avoid stepping on Stevie's gig.
absolutely right on...right up to the end Jerry was one of the most gracious, generous and respectful players that ever was
I agree look how happy he gets when Winwood starts counter soloing
Exiles800 Jerry was pretty ill by this point, too. His playing was sadly hampered by this point, but I certainly agree with him being a gracious man
well discerned
?laying back? i (respectfully) disagree Exiles800... jerry was ALL OVER that song -to extent that it SOUNDED LIKE
A GRATEFUL DEAD TUNE!!
Outrageous! 👍👍👍👍👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋😘😘😘
