I'm afraid I'm more enamored with the sheath than I am the knife. I love all the carry options.
That is actually why I just bought it. Love my SRK’s but wanted horizontal carry.
@@briancox2592 I would suggest that you start to carry your SRK(s) horizontally?!
I don't like the sheath, but would like it if I needed to molle mount it.
Don't forget Buck also uses a lot of 420HC and people love their Buck knives!
My issue with Buck's 420HC is there are ALOT of videos of their knives chipping hardcore. Buck needs to step it up a notch!
I picked one up two weeks ago after seeing it go through "the gauntlet". Its a quality knife. Thanks for the review.
I just purchased one of these (my very first fixed blade knife, love it)
I have a Gerber Prodigy and I was thinking about getting this and using the Prodigy as a complete beater. I love the sheath design on this thing and I love that you can get it with no serrations!
Two of these should finish off my knife collection quite well, along with my Gerber lock blades.
like the blade shape and the pommel is always fun when designed like that. Great review.
Thanks. Agreed, it's a cool design.
Just got mine in black a few days ago and can't wait to put it through the test!! Great video and lovin' the AC/DC like intros!!
I knew I wasn't the onlybone who noticed the AC/DC like tunes. What's your view on Brian Johnson being kickedvout?
Nice to see Gerber coming back to USA made knives. The standard SRK is VG-1 now.
I love the looks of that knife. The sheath looks well made too. If I see a used one for sale somewhere I will give it a try.
I've probably got all the knives I'm ever gonna need but I must say that is a really nice knife.
Got one for my son for Christmas for his "get home" bag!
His son is in the military, is what I believe he is saying. Right?
+TCWProduction A get home bag is something u would carry in ur car and have items that u could survive at least 24hrs
Gerber Strongarm is built like a tank. Luv my all black fine edge
Just got mine today! :D
Love it already
Looks like a very sturdy knife, I've seen it in stores and find myself looking at it...still trying to find a reason to buy it haha. You should do a review on the Matt Would Go by Buck, looks very appealing. always considering your reviews.
This is my favourite knife. It’s my EDC
Very nice knife,I think you sold it on me I now need it.Great video.
Scout, where's the Ka-Bar at eh? Thanks for doing what you do, keep it up.
Buck is probably even more notable for using 420HC than Leatherman. Buck's been at it quite a bit longer than Leatherman, and many say that Buck has perfected the heat treat for 420HC as well.
You are one of the very few who actually know how to use a fire steel, that is pull the steel across the sharp edge, not the other way....Good knife, even better vid!!!
Very impressive sheath configurations.
I carry mine upside down on my all black tactical backpack shoulder strap fits an blends in Perfect.
Is horizontal cary safe, can it hurt you if you fall on it, I know it can happen with sob gun cary, so this made me curious
Great blade! That is one tough knife.
Definitely Agree'
Enjoying. Mine!!! Paid 44.99 plus tax for mine.
OK, I am in Ontario Canada. Just saw one at my nearest Cabella...$99.99 (plus %13 tax)(Black full blade edge) also saw one at my local Canadian Tire store...$125.00 (plus %13 tax)(had the serated section and was the lighter color handle). Will be buying one or the other next week.
Imagine if Gerber came out with a knife made from CPM 3V. I think that news would break the interwebs. All joking aside,I own both the serration version and the non serration if that tells you how much I love this knife. Just an awesome survival/utility knife that won't fail you.
Its all about the heat treat, this knife has been proven on the gauntlet review channel and the Gerber LMF has the same steel which also has some seriously brutal abuse vids. I think the Strongarm and Schrade Schf 42 are about the best knives 50$ can get ya on the market right now, but the Gerber stock out of the box looks killer. I want one but that don't mean much cause I want many other knives LOL but I would buy the Gerber sooner than later.
great review
Would you prefer the straight edge or partially serrated version if they were the same price? Most of my tactical, EDC, utility knives, etc are partially serrated, but I'm curious to see if a straight edge would be better for a tactical vest set-up. Great review!
A serrated is best for urban/city where synthetic/man made materials are present like rope, wire, plastic, seat belts, cardboard, while a fine edge if for wilderness elements like branches, trees, meat, etc. So if you are in a city I think a combo edge, serrated and fine would be good, however I would go fine edge if it were only wilderness survival
I like the blade and handle shapes but I would lean toward the short kabar 1095 fighting knife for $45
I recently purchased this knife at my local wal mart in the coyote wich cost more, the sheath had a lot to do with purchase, unfortunately upon closer inspection the sheath was different, 1st off it was black, and also the nylon was permanently attached to kydex, pay attention to that detail,2 different sheath styles
do u recommend serations on a survival knife?
Definitely gonna pick this knife up to attach to my leg rig will be useful for when I go out shooting.
What the hell is a "leg rig"?
What is the diferent betwen this and the prodigy?
ordered one last night!
the coyote or brown one is supposed to cost more as far as i know, and on EBAY is the opposite. the black one is above $60 so purchased the coyote one for $49.60 with FREE DELIVERY
just picked one up from amazon for 52 bucks. much excite!!!
David Engeron much doge
Could you compare this knife to the Buck Intrepid L, please?
I bought a Prodigy. $30. Pretty much the same deal.
what was that multitool?
Knife looks good. I am not to fond of serrated blades though...
Thanks for the review - Martin
Do you think my Gerber Prodigy in 420HC Full tang, is as good as the Strongarm?
Jeah
glad you finally did the review of the strong arm. as i told you last time when you mentioned it, i love mine. it is the full edge without the serrations.
i have tried horizontal carry at the small of my back and also further forward on my belt. i didnt care much for its feel in that carry style. however, i normally carry off the belt in the drop down using the strap it came with or on my pack via the mollie.
i had considered the sog you showed with it at one point but i am curious as to effectiveness between the two when needing to baton. could you do a write up comparison on how they handled between the two for batoning please?
also, since moving back up to the portland area from lehi, i had the chance to meet their rep. she said that they use the work force belt sharpening system. so if others want to sharpen their knives, thats what their own rep. told me!
Either one will hold up to some batoning. However, I would definitely say the Gerber is the tougher one of the two.
Awesome, good to know.
Great options ima have to get one maybe in the tan
Hello, I would like to buy a knife compact, stainless, robust and not impossible to regrind the daportare field in my travels around the world in nature. This knife is reliable based on your experience? the trust with life? Let me know what you think, thanks to Michae
serrated or straight blade
I just bought the coyote non serated version on amazon for $75.00, hope its as good as everyone says.
How is it
Do you like it?
So it's carbon steel. Have you sharpened it yet?? If so how well did it sharpen??
Nevermind I have a mut I already know. And yes it is a damn good type of steel.
Hey scout, I'm just wondering. Is RUclips a full time job or Is it a hobby, a kinda side project? Also, great job with your channel, it's progressed a lot. Your reviews helped me decide on my current edc
For me it's somewhere between a hobby and a second job. Definitely not my full time job. Thanks for watching, and for the kind words.
+The Late Boy Scout thanks for keeping it a hobby. I see too many people try to live off it and their integrity is compromised by ads, "sponsored videos" and the like.
+The Late Boy Scout
Thank you so much for the response.
Try getting payed to throw axes, Lol... I may be the best in North America but, it ain't ever going to pay the bills ;)
+haredeenee Honestly, I love the process of testing gear and crafting videos around those tests, and if I could do it for a living, I probably would. However I've got a ways to go before I could do that -- and still maintain the integrity, and genuine perspective needed to make it work.
Your Amazon link is to a more expensive Gerber Strongarm. It is $17 more than the one I received yesterday. Not linking to Amazon, but going to Amazon directly will result in a pretty good savings.
Intro Song?
Do you want to know whats in my bug out bag?....
A sig p320 nitron full size with 3000 rounds of 9mm plus a nalgene water bottle.
DO you prefer the serrated or the fine edge?
if youre asking to decide which 1 to get.. dont its totally a opinion whether u like or not u need to try it
Surprised to find a Gerber product made in the USA.
They make alot of stuff in the U.S.A Plant.
Bluegrass Survival yeah that comment made no sense. Obviously he hasn’t seen many gerbers, or he doesn’t know what Portland OR on the blades means
does 420hc hold similar edge retention compared to 8cr14mov or possibly aus8
+mr774porkchop Comparable in my experience, yes. Maybe a little better. It's a pretty common USA made steel, which is why we see it in lots of Buck, Leatherman, and other USA made knives and tools.
420hc doesn't have the best edge retention. I'd say the edge retention is less than that of 1095. My mora stays sharp much longer, and I feel the need to sharpen this exact blade fairly often.
You get this knives original from gerber for 70 usd
Hey scout are you going to Shot Show this year?
Absolutely. Expect coverage similar to last year's.
Sweet. Love your channel and wish I could go with you.
I want to buy it, you help me?
ngocvietsontra@gmail.com
haha the adds on your amazon are knife adds
and the coting is seramic
nothing like a solid fixed blade knife, I perfer fixed blade knives, looks like I am buying another
do review on the gerber evo large tanto.
25 dollars on blade HQ
+Ido Potashnik I'll check it out. I will be reviewing the Propel Downrange auto in the next month or two as well.
ok
come on pay day!
Cool i dont know what
I believe that you may have purchased a copy and not an original Gerber Product .
Why?
Very similar to my BK16.
One of these days I'll finally get a BK16.
+The Late Boy Scout I really enjoy it. I don't have a ton of knives, but it definitely works. carried it in the woods for a few years now and it holds a decent edge and does the job. I wish it had a bit more of an aggressive grip for the rain since it rains here quite a bit, but other than that, it's a nice size, comes with a good sheath, and is pretty light.
wtf now the cheapest one on Amazon is like $65
Noah Koenig I paid 44.99 plus tax
There on sale again $40.00
Amazon
I don't mind good 420hc. Bad 420hc on the other hand is terrible.
I have thrown a lot of knives in my day but, 'boy scout' needs some axe throwing... true axe throwers lack a peer group :(
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiice
Great video but could you kill the music?
They're $70 now...
It’s honestly a shame I have to buy this.
Getting tired of Ninja-tactical blades lol...I know coated blades, Kydex & G10 etc work well etc, but they just look so teenager-rambo-esk! Hokey!
Can't get down with the ninja, eh? Lol
Redbullet242
just too damn seal team stealth ninja 6 for me lol
You into condor knives by any chance? The more of them i buy, the more i like them. Plus they have many traditional looks.
Yo Adrian
ill check them out!
Condor has too many quality control issues for me... Bought 3 bushlore knives, all had defects. Finally had to return the 3rd to Condor themselves and explain the situation because I was tired of returning the knives to the vendor. Now I have to wait for Condor to give me a proper knife without defects.... I won't be buying anymore of their knives.
Combo blade....ewww
You can get it in a plain edge...?????
TheTyrial86 I know it's available, just was wondering why review a combo. Combo knives have one purpose, to be useless. They don't serve any role being you usually have a saw/axe in your pack for such chores. My old Case or K-bar Marine knife fills the same role as this knife with better specs to boot. Always have my Leatherman Sidekick in my pocket for such things regardless if I left the bag @camp. Rubber handle...lol. If I was going to get any fixed blade knife with 420HC, Buck hands down, they've been using that steel for some time now and have a nice heat treat on it. When I hear Gerber I think Walmart...Bear Grylis.
+Rich M. The strongarm is the best Gerber has. The knife that is known to be super durable
Yeah, I saw some reviews on it but I am not a fan of combo knives, which was my original post.
You can get it in both plain edge or serrations. You can also get it in either all black or the black and tan like he showed here.
God I can't stand serrations at all!!!
You can get the Strongarm without serrations, you can also get it in all black instead of black and tan.
Aren't serrations good for urban though?
