    Aaron you sold me a while back on the original Strongarm with the 420HC. The fact you liked it so much and your review including the gauntlet videos sold me so I bought one. What little I've used it before the extreme cold weather hit here, I've been very happy with it. Money is tight so I think I'll keep what I have for a while. Thanks for the review in case I change my mind. God Bless

    I really hope Gerber continues with this trend. I was very happy with the plain edge drop point edict, very pleased with the plain edge Auto propel, now they add this I'm extremely happy. I would love to see more options like this. I'd also love to a plain edge assisted open propel. And maybe an eventually a drop point option. Great video Aaron!

    That was some great information. Many people criticize Gerber for making some not so great knives now days. Gerber does make some lower end mass market stuff but they still produce some good knives. I grew up sighs some great Gerbers like the BMF, Mark II, LMF, Parabellum, TAC II, and so on. I still have most of them. It’s great to know that the old Gerber is still around there in Portland. Thanks as usual for your work and channel. I appreciate it.John

    Very nice. I was a little late to the StrongArm party, but I did eventually get one a couple weeks ago. And I knew, from watching videos on it, it was a performer, but man, it still blew my expectations out of the water. I love it. I'd like to try and snag one for these versions pretty soon, just because I like the non-coated look.

    Gerber has been stepping up there game lately. Starting to see more USA made products and none of the gimmicky stuff you saw before. Would love to see a higher end s30v version. Bought the gator premium and is one of my favorite knives for camping.

    Yep, I sit here and strop my Strongarm black as I watch you confirm once again the validity of my purchase. After having seen some of the Gauntlet run with your black. Seven years ago it began in your hands and on to Prepared101 where he concurred, so after those two trips I was convinced and pulled the trigger. Keep it up on your end and I'll keep stropping the black on mine as I wait for the coyote Strongarm to get here soon. Great minds think alike. 🙂👍

    I knew it was a limited run, so bought one. My 420 HC version was already my favorite general purpose belt knife. The ONLY problem with this BDZ1 version is they lost the 90 degree angle on the spine, because of the "stone wash" finish process. I fixed that with some very cautious file work. It works for striking sparks on a fire steel fine now. I really like the finish. It looks like a knife should look, but that's just my preference. I'm tired of military/tactical looking gear. IMO, this knife is a beast, and worth twice what it costs. This is a great addition to your equipment. I'd buy it all over again and if they come out with another upgraded version I'll probably buy one of them too.

    I recently bought the Gerber Strongarm BDZ1 on back order and it was delivered quickly. I am not sure how long they will remain available. The only issue I have heard other mention is that the stonewash makes using a fire steel tough, due to the lack of a sharp 90 degree back. If needed, I could add a 90 back on my Work Sharp blade grinder. For those more tactically minded, they may prefer a coated blade.

    Great video sir, I picked one of these up and I really like it as well. I've had a Strongarm with serrations for a long time and I just happened to be looking to buy one without just before this limited run was released, so I went ahead and pre-ordered. As you said not such a huge improvement over the original that I would run out and buy one as a replacement, but for somebody who's maybe been on the fence about getting one this is a great way to go.

    Yes , its definitely a winning design, I have the 420HC version and love it , I don't see the BDZ-1 steel as an "upgrade" because I doubt its as "tough" as the 420HC and that's what I really like about the Strong Arm . I would love to see you send it through the Gauntlet and see what its really made of ... That being said , if it did come out in S30V or something similar, I would be all over it and I'm sure alot of other people would to , as long as Gerber doesn't want $150.00 for it . Thanks for the input , good video .

    • @Ve-suvius
      @Ve-suvius 2 года назад

      S30V is not exactly a tough steel.
      That's not an upgrade either in toughness either..
      Nice for pocket knives that have to slice cardboard often.

  • @toddk9044
    @toddk9044 6 лет назад

    Just received mine in today. I noticed the BDZ1 version doesn't have a sharp spine vs the 420HC version. Ten minutes is all it took to sharpen the spine using a diamond sharpener and now it strikes a ferro rod well. I also got really lucky when I bought this off Amazon, they had a "used" one for $55 only because the packaging was damaged. knife looked brand new when I pulled it out, $4 more than the standard version, I'll take it all day long, lol. It was also shaving sharp. I can't wait to get out and thrash on this thing and see for myself how it compares to the original version. I also prefer the satin or stone wash finish vs the black coating. I think it be awesome if Gerber made another version of this knife with a 5 1/2-6" blade. It be the perfect blade imo, but I'm very satisfied with current Strongarm.

    That knife has been available on Amazon for about 2-3 weeks already. I was surprised that none of you guys that make video reviews had a sample. The problem for me right now is that the prices are all over the place on the Strongarm, but for a fair price I would buy one except that I might hesitate due to it being a limited production run model. And then for $50 plus, I don't want it to sit in a drawer either. :)

    Im a bit puzzled that out of three reviewers so far not one of you noticed that the BDZ1 version has a thinner wall on the saber grind portion of the blade. Ive used their Prodigy and Strongarm for a couple years now and when I got this new BDZ1 I instantly felt a differance . It has a much better angle making it an awesome slicer feather sticks like a dream....I would be very interested to see what Chris at PM101 might say after using this new one? He told me in a post that the reason the knife just felt odd in his review was that the saber wall was to thick esp on the shoulder of the bevel. Most of us that own and use the Strongarm alot instantly gave it a different grind by convexing the edge and thining it down. This bdz1 is pretty much set out of box, all it needs is a simple fine tuning by slightly convexing the V edge. I LOVE THIS ONE AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND BUYING.

    I think you are 100% correct in the opinion GERBER would be better off (as well as the consumer) giving the option for a SUPERIOR STEEL as a choice and see what that market brings to the table... that way perhaps they can calculate the value of the cost of the steel and heat treat per potential buyer. I personally LOVE my GERBER STRONGARM and have bought it as a few gift for a few friends and family (who I care very much about and want them to have a tool that will excel in a SHTF situation) primarily on it's ERGO's and TOUGHNESS. I have many knives, like most of your subscribers I imagine. The GERBER STRONGARM has some of the BEST ERGO's of any knife I own. That is my primary reason for buying it for people who don't necessarily realize the importance of a cutting tool because I feel they will have a better chance at achieving any cutting task based on it's comfort. If GERBER had a Strongarm in: 3V, S35VN, Elmax, or AEB-L I would buy 1 for everyone in my family and recommend them for ANYONE interested in purchasing a knife..... Hopefully GERBER follows this channel and is interested in an automatic 5 knives+ being bought from 1 consumer......

    I’ll pass on this one since I have the original. One knife I have been eyeballing is the Gerber Gator Premium fixed blade knife CPM-S30V. I‘m hopping you have a review planned for the gator premium ... I’ve not seen a review on the premium yet in English lol.

    I want the BDZ1 version because it's supposed to have even better corrosion resistance, which I need for salt water usage.

      My 420HC is in my tackle box all time time and it hasn't shown any evidence of corrosion.... and I've had it for 2 years, but having said that, the upgrade would be just that little higher on the "peace -of-mind" scale!

      That's good to know, Luke. Are you fresh water fishing or open ocean, because the latter is my concern.

      +Charles Collier I live on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. After using it I thoroughly clean it and oil the blade before putting it away. I'm not rough with it though and I believe that the coating, once it wears down, would not protect it as much but it really depends what you use it for. I use it mainly for chopping up bait and bleeding out fish....

    So since this is no longer available, what knife would you suggest as a comparable overall blade? Should I still go with original SA or head a different direction?

      Stephen Gunnoe the original Strongarm for $60 or less is still epic, otherwise look at the Steel Will Argonaut

    I have the coyote brown Strongarm and love it. I just like the look of the grey handle. Won't mean anything performance wise but it is nice looking.

    How does this have better edge retention while also being easier to sharpen?

    • @BigDaddySwingingMeat
      @BigDaddySwingingMeat Год назад +1

      It must be a carbon steel then because carbon steels are the only steels I know of that are both easy to sharpen and hold an edge for a long time. Carbon steels like 80CRV2 and 52100 excel at both attributes.
