I just bought one it was half price! I usually don't like Gerber knives but I'm impressed with the Strongarm! Its tough and it looks really good! Awesome review thank you !
I wasn't a fan of Gerber knives or the 420 hc steel but the Gerber strongarm dam sure changed my mind on both.this knife is verturely Indestuctable. It's one of my favorites I keep with my bug out bag.i love everything about this knife its been used and abused. Holds it edge great and very easy to keep a edge on when it's time to sharpen. The sheath is great too.
Yeah same here,I love how this knife rocks, hence the name Strongarm,I'm getting one an a prodigy before all the prodigy are gone,I like how both handles feel,I wanna keep one in the car glove box just in case.
I like my Strongarm. So far it has destroyed the BG knife! I tested literally side by side. The BG knife's tip snapped off, the pommel broke off, even the edge was rolling and chipping. The Strongarm didn't even get phased at all! I say Gerber used a good steel (420HC) and they know how to heat treat it. Imo, its a great outdoor utility blade and tactical. I would chose this over the Schf40 series any day of the week, especially being made in USA. I've seen too many Chinease blades fail...
I use the shit out of my strongarm Bushcraft every weekend in northern Minnesota. It performs everything I need it to do.. My Esee 5 sits at home along with my OKC Rat 5. Only reason is I was trying to break it so I could use the esee and the onterio but the ol Gerber keeps on going!
@faultroy It is not too small for a survival knife. A Survival knife is what ever you carry, or have availiable in your environment, when you get into a survival situation. This is a 100% Urban tactical knife, suited for special forces, either police or military. Also, the best knife, is a fixed blade, that has a blade with no more length, than the width of your palm son. That being said, this knife has bad blade geometry, which makes it a good prybar but a bad knife to cut-slice with. The saber grind is a bit low for such blade thickness. If you want a 1 tool option, better choose something like the BK7, that has a more suitable steel and blade geometry. Sae goes for the BK2, Nice as a prybar, s...it as a knife can be. Also these kind of knives, are neither the length of your palm, nor long enough (chopping and battoning, for backyard RAMBOS) abilities. Only mr Kochanski had it right, the rest are nonsense that spread around like a bad knife disease. Stay safe and enjoy knives!
@faultroy If you could respect my personal opinion, I would answer. Insulting someone because he has an opinion and expecting a serious answer, is simply immature. I'm sorry, I already had one of the worst days in my hole life today, so I can't even read all the things you wrote. Only thing that comes into my mind, is that we shouldn't take tools so seriously, a life and a mental health is more valuable than our tools or our ego. In all seriousness, I'm sorry if my opinion, made you a bit mad. Stay safe and have a good night
I agree 💯 with you,the Strongarm an prodigy done it for me, Gerber has certainly gotten these two knives done well,I wished they had done more production line of the Strongarm in bdz-1 steel, well no worries,I'm still a fan of the knive even though it's 420hc,but it's awesome an full Tang an definitely a hell of a lot better than the Bear Grylls.
With the right heat treatment, 420HC and AUS8 are great tough steels for field knives. I love carbon steel knives too. But properly treated, lower end stainless steel are comparable while resisting corrosion better.
Gerber should fire the executive that kept them offering mostly serrated blades for the last 15 years what a joke they've ruined so many otherwise excellent knives, and I actually don't mind serrated as an option which I use a bit of.
I feel the same way bro. The Gerber Strongarm is the KA-BAR USMC of our age. It's one of the most popular knives for soldiers to have with them over seas, and it's popular with the knife community. Unlike many knives that had a reputable knife company or name backing it the Strongarm came in under a lot of really harsh skepticism due to the Gerber's Bear Grylls knife line and all the BS that followed. The Gerber Strongarm had to prove itself as a tough and reliable tool and it did that over the years. When many knife designs come and go, this will be one of those knifes that some website or magazine will tell ya that you are no true knife enthusiast unless you own it.
I'm keeping my LMF2 for sure, it's always on the side of my sirvival kit pack. But I have really wanted this knife for a while. Everyone lately has given Gerber a bad name because of the bear grylls stuff, but their made in USA blades are usually pretty damn good.
A lot of their US stuff is more combat/rescue focused rather than woods focused, which has kinda fallen out if favor with everyone. Their outdoor knife line is still either the Myth or BG stuff, and their new camping line is the Freescape line. All these lines are (in my experience) of lower quality. They need to either: a) US produce dedicated outdoor blades, or b) get a better factory in china, and stop making so many varied products and focus on fewer, better ones. The US fixed blades and Folders are generally pretty good - the Police themed order/edict/decree knives last year were great, and this years 39 folder and premium gator are both pretty high class products. If all they made was the US stuff, they'd have a much better name. Its just that the good stuff if drowning in a sea of cheapo products which often just do weird things when they are used. Or need recall entirely!
Try looking up the Schrade schf40d the schf40 had serrations like the Gerber so I was completely turned off by it but Schrade totally did what people begged Gerber to do and that was a straight edge version. Its completely enclosed tang and has a rocky mountain tred grip also the sheath is like the Gerber very good retention and thick. Yes they ripped of the design but IMHO its better, especially where the blade meets the handle Gerber's lmf2 always breaks at that spot because its two separate materials unlike the Schrade which is one solid chunk of a glass filled rubberized grip. As of yet I've seen no reviews of the straight edge version but if you go to Fire & Steel's channel they do an awesome review of the schf40 with serrated edge but its the same knife. I'm glad to find your channel subbed ya;)
Man, you're really putting out the videos now! IMO that knife works as a one tool option. The sort of thing you'd take if you couldn't be bothered bringing a hatchet and a saw with you.
+FPSRelic Yeah its a huge step up from gerber. A D2 edition, or even an S30V version would be a real shot in the arm for the line - not that these aren't selling well (when they are going for a good price in Australia at numerous retailers, you know it must be movi g some units!) but a couple steel options would be cool and get the steel snobs who will always sneer st 420 HC no matter how much I sibg its praises on board! And yes - had some extra time to catch up on these videos lately. Been good!
Based on his experience, this Gerber Strongarm is a really good knife as they say? I'm looking for a sturdy knife, not great, that cuts for a long time and it's easy to sharpen, a knife is to be entrusted with life? I want a good product, you can do this in my case?
Batonning logs is stupid, but using a knife to baton wood wrist size or smaller is fine. It's when you see people try to baton 8 inch diameter logs with a 4 inch knife, that's when it gets ridiculous.
I love the Strongarm an the prodigy as well, but the prodigy is vastly disappearing from places an is going up in price even used for like a 100.00 on ebay.
I wasn't a fan of the sheath and its snaps. I put a couple of ranger bands over the snaps and now it is much more secure. For the money it is a pretty good all in one knife.
+German Survivalist (Dante Briefs) yeah its definitely got more of a general use feel to it - a great knife for a non-knife person to have and enjoy. Im yet to handle an SRK, but I'm almost sorted for fixed blades now. Just after something in the 7 inch do-all category. Maybe a Rat 7 or a BK7. I'm weighing up a few choices!
+KillerDeegan Yes I have. I owned an SRK a few years ago, sadly I had to sell it. As for the Gerber Strongarm I had the chance to test it extensivly cause a friend of mine has one.
+aceleenieto already done! plus a follow up! order my videos by recent to oldest and the first was about 2 years ago and the second was pretty recent :) spoilers: its a good one

@faultroy So sir, what do you think is a good survival knife? In all earnestness

Love the looks of that knife blade design and handle shape even the flat dark earth color. Great review!
With the right heat treatment, 420HC and AUS8 are great tough steels for field knives. I love carbon steel knives too. But properly treated, lower end stainless steel are comparable while resisting corrosion better.
After a year, this is one of my favourite knives!

ikr, I've always wanted a plain edged LMF Infantry
@@jabames haven't we all....... and a full tang version
I bought one! Got it yesterday and I'm going to use it as a beater. I got swayed by the Joe X destruction results.
Me too, never seen a knife take so much abuse and still be functional.

I have the strong Arm and the fine edge Prodigy . I like them both and keep one in my truck and one in the Jeep.

CedricAda Gear and Outdoors Well, if they even have one, I'd say you should work at Gerber's Australian marketing department lol
Sounds like a good SA accent there.
Great review, think I might buy one.
Cheers mate.
Yes thankyou that is way better.
Makes me wonder if that's how it's supposed to be but the basic picture instructions didn't show it that way
Good review, nice to see Gerber making something decent. Cheers mate.
Well I’m late to the party, but I just got a strongarm. It’s the new one with bdz1, and gray handle. Thanks for the video Pete

@faultroy what are your thoughts on the benchmade adamas 375? Would it be a better option for bush and survival?
I got the prodigy. Now can't wait to get the strongarm

Gerber Strongarm is a beast of a knife " Luv my all black
The tip of the SRK SK5 😔 had to reprofile. Bought a Coyote Strongarm and selling the SRK.
forget the batoning, knives aren't made for it. A buggered up knife isn't much use to you. Get a Cold Steel pipe hawk. I recommend them.
Within reason (kindling or an emergency)
Batonning logs is stupid, but using a knife to baton wood wrist size or smaller is fine. It's when you see people try to baton 8 inch diameter logs with a 4 inch knife, that's when it gets ridiculous.
Blind Fredy I got a trail hawk but I do agree
The bottom point is designed for breaking glass
Thanks. I want one.

I still think the SRK is better, but this has a good second place in my Top 10 Survival Knives (not Bushcraft knife though)
