    Into the West,
Written by Annie Lennox, Fran Walsh and Howard Shore (2003)
The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King Soundtrack
    - | LYRICS |-
    Lay down
    Your sweet and weary head
    Night is falling
    You’ve come to journey's end
    Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
    They are calling
    From across the distant shore
    Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
    Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
    Safe in my arms
    You're only sleeping
    [Chorus]
    What can you see
    On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
    Across the sea
    A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
    And all will turn
    To silver glass
    A light on the water
    All souls pass
    Hope fades
    Into the world of night
    Through shadows falling
    Out of memory and time
Don't say: «We have come now to the end»
    White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
    Just sleeping
    [Chorus]
    And all will turn
    To silver glass
    A light on the water
    Grey ships pass
    Into the West

...like the calming reassurance of an old friend. As a reader of books and a lover of words...it helps to bridge the gap between Tolkien's eloquence and the films' imagery. Well done...well read...and well sung.

The thing is... They never will meet again... Dwarves go to a separate area of the Halls of Mandos, Humans and Hobbits go to another, and Elves go to yet another.

Jonathan Law no, I've read the hobbit, the Silmarillion and the Lotr trilogy. and is appreciate if you didn't act like I was an idiot for expressing an OPINION. something I never stated to be fact, but rather something I'd prefer.

Carl Brittain agreed. I think this is how it would go:
      - Bilbo: looking around the halls in curiosity
He then hears a familiar voice
      - Thorin: Bilbo?
      - Bilbo: Thorin?
They both run to each other and hug each other like brothers
      - Bilbo (with tears in his eyes): it’s nice to see you again Thorin
      - Thorin: it’s nice to see you again, old friend

"and the winds of the round sky troubled it no more, and borne upon the high airs above the mists of the world it passed into the Ancient West" - The SIlmarillion, the very last paragraph. This was beautiful, Karliene!

Just a random guy You just read my mind!! I also think that way. And it makes me sad that we can't have a Bilbo to cheer us up and make us smile in the good and bad times and a Sam to hold us really thigt to say "Everything is going to be just fine, trust me! There is no need for you to cry like that... because I am rigth here beside you!!!"

I can relate. I had a dog, a puppy when I was about 8 or 9. We grew up together and she went every where with me, trotting along beside my bicycle or nest to me when walking. I so love my dear Pup Pup! She died ad when I was in my early 20s. I cried. And now, I a 6' 1" and weigh 280lbs and fear no one. But I will cry like a baby for an animal. My cat got caught in the fan of my car and was mangled and suffering and spitting blood and I had to shoot her to put hr out of her misery. I held that cat to my heart for 3 hours and just rocked it and cried.

You understand a fundamental truth. Music cannot be heard or played, it must be felt. It must be felt in the soul and the mind, it must be the utter expression of one's heart and love. You express that truth, that unbelievable beauty that only a true artist can bring forth. I love you for being able to do this, to give your soul to the world and awaken the love of others.

First off, you start reading an extract from the book. I've always preached that you are an amazing singer, and now you've given us even more proof of how damn intelligent you are. That reached me in ways I will never describe here, but the song is important to me. I am serious, when The Return of The King came out it became my favourite song and I have always wanted it to be played at my funeral. But now I've changed my mind.
Now I want THIS cover of the song to be played at my funeral. I know this is no fancy review I simply had no time to analyse your cover. I was so struck by it, stunned. I've admitted to have cried with several of your songs, but not like this... Not like this.
And that is the best compliment you will ever receive from me.
Plus, it was lovely hearing you read, as I am in depth studying British accents. And that I did analyse, sound by sound. It was objectively speaking; treassure to me, thank you.

It can be so tricky taking a swelling, powerful song and making it your own, but you have absolutely done just that. I love this song and the way that Annie sings it beyond wonderful, but your version of this song is just...breathtaking. It is so powerful because there are no harps or strings or a grand orchestra to back you up, it's just your voice. Your soft tone and subtle harmonies throughout the piece just make this phenomenal. For four and a half minutes all of my worries, cares, and concerns just slipped away and your angelic voice soothed my soul. Thank you so much for this, it is truly perfection.

Wow! wow! wow! I listened to this while at work, had the lights in my office dimmed, due to a bad migraine. I clicked to listen to your newest offering, and I just let me eyes close, and was immediately surrounded by a beautiful, ethereal voice. This music always touched me in a soft way in LOTR, but never in the way your rendition just did with the lyrics. You were able to transport me to a different world. While I still have my migraine, I'm sure that with a few more listens on my part, with eyes closed, you will have me so relaxed, poof, migraine might be vanquished. I absolutely loved it!! You are now officially my new favourite singer. And I am officially your newest fan. Thank you so much from Canada.

DivrgntSentinel I don't see it as vulgar. Rather, to me, its just more... rough hewn... than other accents. Like a towering mountain wreathed in dark clouds. Not all will find it stunning, but for those to whom it speaks, soul to soul, it is a beauty more compelling than any other.

I discovered this through clicking on 'Gently as she goes' from Beowulf. As I listen to every new song I find another more amazing than the one before. It is a world that opens to me, a world that gives all my favourite fandoms a different tune, a different voice that haunts and moves me with its clarity and brilliance. I am blessed to have found you, Karliene, I am truly amazed by your work!

You put so much effort and passion into your work and this song is no exception. Your performance was so believable, you sounded like an angel with your calm, soothing voice. No, I lied. You ARE an angel. Three years in the making? Well, it was worth every single second.

I think you and Peter Hollens ought to do a duet of this number. It would take some work to merge your styles, but I think the effort would be worth it!!! INMHO
