Thank you for taking the time to let listen to me, some people won't even give things a try so you're a pretty awesome person. I love that you love the song and thanks for letting me know. I may not have the same type of background but it makes me feel the same way.. I feel like this song speaks of The ancient Giants of our world. I don't mean mythical creatures but animals we know existed but went extinct. The Giants that fall into the efforts we can take to keep them from time

👋 from Ireland. Legends of giants span from Ireland to Scotland to Scandinavia & probably all over the world. If they were rare we probably killed them of long ago out of fear. Today we’ve made extinct millions of natures creatures and in an insane way have led a path to or own extinction. Those pesky humans 🫤🫣

Louis Haack I meant on the show. They seem to be somewhat self aware of it, too. Olenna joked at the Purple Wedding that "it's been a whole hour since I last heard [the rains of castamere]".

Malefactor That was actually the case in the books as well. At the Purple Wedding, many of he performers played their renditions of "The Rains of Castamere" because they wanted to curry favor with the Lannisters.

    For those wantin' the lyrics:
Ooooooh, I am the last of the giants, my people are gone from the earth.
The last of the great mountain giants, who ruled all the world at my birth.
Oh the smallfolk have stolen my forests, they’ve stolen my rivers and hills.
And they've built a great wall through my valleys, and fished all the fish from my rills.
In stone halls they burn their great fires, in stone halls they forge their sharp spears.
Whilst I walk alone in the mountains, with no true companion but tears.
They hunt me with dogs in the daylight, they hunt me with torches by night.
For these men who are small can never stand tall, whilst giants still walk in the light.
Oooooooh, I am the LAST of the giants, so learn well the words of my song.
For when I am gone the singing will fade, and the silence shall last long and long

“Do you know ‘The Last of the Giants’?” Without waiting for an answer Ygritte said, “You need a deeper voice than mine to do it proper.” Then she sang, “Ooooooh, I am the last of the giants, my people are gone from the earth.” Tormund Giantsbane heard the words and grinned. “The last of the great mountain giants, who ruled all the world at my birth,” he bellowed back through the snow. Longspear Ryk joined in, singing, “Oh, the smallfolk have stolen my forests, they’ve stolen my rivers and hills.” “And they’ve built a great wall through my valleys, and fished all the fish from my rills,” Ygritte and Tormund sang back at him in turn, in suitably gigantic voices. Tormund’s sons Toregg and Dormund added their deep voices as well, then his daughter Munda and all the rest. Others began to bang their spears on leathern shields to keep rough time, until the whole war band was singing as they rode. For when I am gone the singing will fade, and the silence shall last long and long. There were tears on Ygritte’s cheeks when the song ended. “Why are you weeping?” Jon asked. “It was only a song. There are hundreds of giants, I’ve just seen them.” “Oh, hundreds,” she said furiously. “You know nothing, Jon Snow.

This make me think of a lonely Neanderthal wandering in the great virgin forests of Europe 40'000 years ago, his tribe wiped out by the incoming Homo Sapiens, his heart broken by sorrow and loneliness, with only the music of his little bone flute to make him remember of his ancestors and loved ones.

  • @peterapps62

Ten years ago, I joined one of the world's largest news organisations as a trainee journalist. I was 22. A year later, they sent me to southern Africa. God I loved that year. For some reason, this song really reminds me of the Drakensberg Mountains. It's the video, the spirit and also a slight resemblance to a song called "Eland Cave" about the last of the bushmen in the mountains. Anyhow, after just over a year there they moved me on and send me somewhere I didn't want to go. There was a war. Which was fine, as it goes, definitely interesting and certainly a good chance to make a difference. I has been there 11 months when my vehicle hit a tractor somewhere on the Eastern front. It killed me. Okay, I exaggerate slightly. It broke my neck. Ever since then, I've been paralysed from the shoulders down. I've been like that now longer than I was a teenager. Even that's been okay, more or less. I got back to work the day after I left hospital in a wheelchair with carers. Over 20 countries I've covered, more than half have been since the injury. I'm now global defence correspondent. I divide my time between London and Washington DC. The last year, though, it's got difficult. I'm increasingly bedbound. I can only get up for a handful of hours a day. I think I got up three times in March. Turns out you get only a certain number of years after an injury like this, and it's beginning to look like I've had mine. I really hope not. Earlier today, I was sitting in a room with a couple of senior colleagues maybe twice my age. They did the same job I did and they got lucky. Or less unlucky. Thirteen colleagues from my organisation have died since I first reported for my interview in early 2003. Sometimes I envy them..Anyhow, I don't sleep so well now. Sometimes, often, actually, I listen to this in the middle of the night. I don't know if anyone will read this. To be honest I'm kind of hoping not -- it's not usually open idea to show this kind of weakness. And it's a strange place for this kind of writing. But there we are. That's my story. And this, I guess, is my song.

    • @Kalepherion
      @Kalepherion 10 лет назад +74

Peter. All men die, but how we live while we have breath is what truly defines us. You have seen and done things most men have not. You have your words, you are a writer. Write. Write from a part of your soul as you have done here, and keep doing so, for a writer never truly dies as long as their words are read. You can touch and inspire people for generations. Thank you for writing this, I salute your courage.

In my past profession it was my experience that the harder the battle a person was facing the harder it was for them to admit it. I hope someone with a better answer than mine will read this.

this is from a scene in the book where Ygritte (sic) is singing it as Tormund, then Longspear sing it back to her as Jon Snow looks on. She starts by saying, "you have to have a deep voice to do it proper". At the end she is weeping and Jon says, "don't cry, there are hundreds of them.......I've just seen them" to which she replies, "you know nothing Jon Snow".
I think the song is not for one specific giant but if it were it would be for Mag the Mighty who was their elder and who died in the tunnel trying to get through Donnel Noye in the book and Grenn in the show.
This is a beautiful version but I would like to hear it done a cappella with the characters from the show.
Reading the passage I got choked up because it speaks of the end of things, for everyone.

Thank you, I think I was just frustrated with it as I'd spent weeks trying to get it right from the composition to the tone and style. It was just a rather difficult song for me but i'm thrilled and over the moon that you like it. I do try so much to put my heart into all my songs so I'm glad that's coming across.

Ooooooh, I am the last of the giants
My people are gone from the earth
The last of the great mountain giants
Who ruled all the world at my birth
Oh the smallfolk have stolen my forests
They’ve stolen my rivers and hills
And the’ve built a great wall through my valleys
And fished all the fish from my rills
In stone halls they burn their great fires
In stone halls they forge their sharp spears
Whilst I walk alone in the mountains
With no true companion but tears
They hunt me with dogs in the daylight
They hunt me with torches by night
For these men who are small can never stand tall
Whilst giants still walk in the light
Oooooooh, I am the last of the giants
So learn well the words of my song
For when I am gone all the singing shall fade
And the silence will last long and long

I would like to say , there is a sleeping giant hound in the White Mountains in N.H .USA. If you travel north through Franconia Notch , on the East side of your travels there is a formation of hills that looks to be a sleeping hound or a resting elephant. This area also Held the late Old man of the mountain. When the wind blows you can hear the pup snore . When it storms you can hear him howl .
Let us not forget the resting giants .

Nothing truly good that lasts comes easily, only the best things come through hardship, trial, and error, and it is from this hardship we appreciate them all the more. I'm glad I made you smile, :), your songs have done that for me more than once. :)

    Hi there,
just stopping by to say I absolutely love your music!
And as a person that read & loves Martin's books I am extra happy that these songs it seems nobody knows (and the show-runners kinda ignore) are getting made and sung by someone with voice as lovely as yours :)
so thank you, thanks bunches :)
btw, while I can imagine this sung by a really low, male voice, I think you did it justice, it's very wistful and chilling...

I don't know why but this song just hits me in the spirit, I don't understand how yet but I feel like I connect to this song in some spiritual way ,and it has like opened my eyes to just what we as human's have done to Mother Nature ,and it is only a matter of time before she decides to swing back at us, which is why I'm going to do what I can to make sure that Nature and I are on the same side

As somebody who, most usually, listens to punk rock and hardcore. I must say for me especially hearing your work was phenomenal, my partner showed me this track after work one night. And because of my music taste I was apprehensive, I won't lie. However after the first 30 seconds or so I was totally blown away, mock me as they may I shall share your work with my friends. Because you are amazing. I have more to say but I can't begin to word it.

I'm sure I did a comment long time ago on this one. But I still cannot believe how much I'm in love with this song. Brings me back to Ireland, where I did a road trip last year. Makes me wish so much to be back there sitting on the edge of some cliffs and listen to the sea. I've been listening to this song a thousand times for sure but still gives me goosebump every damn time. Sometimes it brings tears to my eyes because its so full of feelings and longins. I just love it.

The enchanting voice and amazing lyrics this song has-it just makes you imagine sitting by a campfire and a beautiful and voice talented maiden like Karliene would start singing this as like a tale or legend. As the singing begins all the people around the campfire would start imagining the mountain hills, snow covered valleys and rivers, the home of the giants...Amazingly done...
