I bought the Switch version of this game and spent about 30 minutes with it. It didn't take long for me to see that the graphics weren't great, but I figured eh, as long as it wasn't distracting to the point of affecting gameplay, I'll live. After fighting the tentacles and crashing ashore, I saw enough. The resolution seemed erratic, there was TONS of texture shimmer everywhere, shadows and shading were subpar (sometimes instead of clean gradients, you get clearly delineated grey bars), and the framerate was wonky. I knew I made a mistake, but I decided to pour salt in my wounds and download the PS4 demo. Holy crap, I didn't think the difference would be THIS big. It was WAAAAY smoother in every way possible. I obviously don't expect the Switch to outclass the PS4, but this isn't a very technically demanding game, so the gap in fidelity shouldn't be so massive. Hell, the PS4 version doesn't look like it would tax the Switch's hardware, so there's really no excuse. It really is just a bad port.
This video makes a noble effort of showing the distinctions between the two versions, but I don't think it really captures just how different they look. I had to go and learn the hard way with my own side-by-side (HDMI 1-by-HDMI 2?) comparison. Don't make my mistake if you have the option between the two versions.

You’re so right about this. I didn’t notice for a while but the texture shimmer, especially in handheld mode, is migraine-inducing. It’s especially disappointing because not only is the game good, but I really wanted it portable and it’s only really playable when docked. It’s so distracting to see characters faces rapidly going in and out of focus while the background flashes constantly as it tries to sharpen. Just horrendous.

Yeah the Switch looks really bad to the point where it sometimes feels like playing a PS2 game but I don't really mind. There are also some times where the framerate takes a massive dip but it doesn't happen too often. The game still feels great to play regardless and I'm glad I got it on Switch.

Not sure why people are saying this is an exaggeration? I had to stop playing on my Switch Lite because of the grain and choppiness. I'm not sure what the technical terms are for whats wrong with it but its still horrible. Just a bad port. Bought it on PS4 recently and it is literally night and day difference level. Butter smooth with no frame drops or grain/chop.

    • @Tenchigumi
      @Tenchigumi 4 года назад +8

Yeah, to be clear, I'm not criticizing this game (I bought it on two platforms at full price, so obviously I like it THAT much), but it's a shame seeing a great game ported so badly when I know the Switch can do so much better. This was a Vita game, and the Switch has the horsepower to manage a solid port The Witcher 3! But it is what it is. For folks who don't notice the problems, you're blessed, so enjoy what you got.

Thank you for making this video!!! I wanted to see the comparison since the switch has it on sale lowest its been...and really I'm impressed with how similar the details look on both consoles. That said, I can see the slight frame rate difference and the stutters of the switch. It wouldn't make that a deal breaker for me :) but I do think I will wait for the ps4 version to go on sale instead. Hobestly it's just impressive that the switch can run things like this, skyrim and the witcher with such nice graphics :) even if it takes a small dive with the frames

I suppose they pushed the fps to 30 in favor of keeping the assets (e.g texture quality) same but with cost of lower res and a not so good AA which results in shimmering distances or flickering look in crowded objects (i think its kidna same technique used in Skyrim), but its much better than the weird sharpening filter used in undocked mode of XenoBlade. That is just my guess, also its obvious the shadow maps have been cut massively specially in distance or even render quality. i suppose its a quick port, im sure they could have push the game beyond 30 fps but no 60 fps locked

As someone who has both the PC and switch version, I have to say for 59.99 I'm apalled by the switch version.
30FPS is fine for the switch, but the texture filtering especially on mip maps is non existent causing extreme full screen texture shimmering, it can be hard to look at. For what appears to have the fidelity of a last gen title, the piss poor texture filtering and half resolution you'll often be playing at with the dynamic resolution especially in portable mode... Idk, it's just bad optimization and I'm very disappointed, especially as a long time Ys fan. They could have done a much better port, and to have the audacity to charge full retail... I've lost a lot of respect for Falcolm/NIS.

I love my switch but I really don't understand nintendo. Give your games a 60fps MINIMUM and work the visuals around that value, not the other way around. Frame rate actually affects gameplay, having slightly prettier visuals does not.
Actually to be honest it's not really just nintendo but consoles in general have this idea where visuals > frame rate and they will sacrifice frames for prettier graphics. Games should look the best they possibly can AFTER 60fps has been achieved and perfecting all other gameplay elements (like fucking split screen). I would rather have ps3 era graphics on the ps4 if it meant the return of split screen in games and silky smooth 60 fps.

actually the ps4 version is native 1080p and solid 60FPS, the switch is something around 900p and 30FPS and at some places it seems to be hitting 40FPS I guess?
a fair example is the grass at the beach, the ps4 version looked crisp and clean, while the switch at first glamps you think it looks much shaper until you realize that the stuff at the distance is having a rough edged shapes and so pixelated, it's not a game changer or anything special but the palm trees shadows looks so low res'd on the switch port.

  • @KevenLC

I have a ps4 and switch. So could have got either version. Opted for the switch because given the choice, I often do as nothing beats being able to play a game on the bog.
I realised the graphics were bad but didn't let it ruin it, as it's a great game regardless. Seeing how buttery smooth the PS4 looks though has marred my experience with the game a little.

I'll be damned if I can tell much of a difference, at least on the still visuals. 720P vs 1080P hardly ever has much of a visual difference in practice. Only main difference I noticed is the 60FPS vs 30FPS and a bit darker colors on the Switch. The FPS difference is quite glaring though.... that 60FPS on the PS4 sure does look nice. It almost looks lower than 30FPS in spots on the Switch to me... looks like it dips down to as low as 15FPS. It really does look jerky compared to the PS4 version. Shame they couldn't have at least bumped up the FPS to around 40/45 or so in docked mode.
Damn... now my decision of which to get became a bit tougher. This is EXACTLY why I really want to see a Switch + released sometime within the next couple years, something where the games are compatible with both but will run with higher FPS and/or resolution on the Switch +. That would be so nice. I would gladly buy if they were to do this.

Ebefren Revo I own a Switch. I'm Nintendo all the way, I just don't understand why half the library is 30fps. I'm talking games like this and overcooked. Hell even xenoblade and kirby are 30fps what the hell.
EDIT: Also MHXX (a 3DS (yes you read that right) port) runs at 30fps on the switch. It feels like devs are lazy with the switch and think people are fine with 30fps because you people make it seem like it's all good.

you're wrong, PS4 locked to 30fps, PS4pro has 2 options that one of them fake upsclaed 4K 60fps. PC has numerous fixes & most of it run smoothly 60 fps highest resolution/4K.

Croz Raven I own the PS4 version of this game and play on a Pro, it's 4k (native 4k), 60 fps (with some drops, but mostly stable). There's no indicator of it being checkerboarded to 4k. It looks like the post processing pipeline (or certain aspects of it) are sub-native res though. The depth of field in particular creates a ton of noticeable shimmer.

After 6 months I'm back where I finally got around to playing Ys 8 on Switch and I can say without a doubt this comparison is massively misleading. Walk
un around any outside area on the island that is even slightly open and the whole image has a horrendous shimmering, grainy appearance caused by either no TAA or mipmaps being removed from the diffuse textures to save space on the Switch cartridge. Absolutely horrible appearance that will start to hurt your eyes (literally) very quickly. Buy on PS4 instead.
