Thanks! I was camera man Saturday night for the Dancing Plant Party and I needed an outfit. It was a halloween analog for music lovers in New Zealand. A fun all-nighter at an art collective called Exchange Christchurch. I was also recently praised for wearing a similar outfit a few years back for an XJW Coming Out episode with a missionary woman I met in Ecuador. I thought I'd bring it back so people know I take this topic very seriously lol.
On my journey out of the JWs, I was a mess and wanted to fit in with "the world" fast. Not good for mental health. Lol During that time, I remember telling my therapist that I threw the baby out with the bath water and I shamed myself for doing that. My thoughts on this now, if you are leaving a cult, maybe there were some things that seemed to be beneficial when still in but at the same time, a cult is a cult is a cult and cults are controlling, harmful and unhealthy for anyone's autonomy and right to think for themselves. My thoughts on community and cultures....there have been sooo many things that have broken down the sense of community and deeply rooted cultures. Colonization, the Jesuits, Catholicism, wealth, greed, propaganda which has influenced capitalism, politics, our food supply and so much more. I personally believe if you want to truly influence change, you have to start with you and your family and your local community, then branch out from there. And the other way to influence change for the better is through education. Such as this conference. Those are all things that start healthy communities. I love your work Scott and all that you do. And all the efforts of everyone else trying to change the way we handle cults and movements that are harmful. Thank you!
Today I was interviewed on another podcast and the host brought up that her conclusion after getting out of an extremely controlling cult was that autonomy is the first value to uphold in society for a healthy community and society. I just re-read your comment here. I find it interesting that you specifically pointed out autonomy being at risk from. Thank you for commenting and I really appreciate the compliment. I feel that everyone who learns these hard won lessons adds much value by sharing their insights in any way they can. Most people never learn what we learned by direct experience from being pressured, coerced, and successfully navigating the situation to finally see the world with our unique skill sets. It's a pleasure to share and communicate on the topic.
Hell of an outfit Scott. Love it. :)
