Thanks for watching April! I love labyrinth zone, im glad you feel the same way! Tbh Flying Battery from S3K is probably my favorite zone out of all the classics.
Finally someone who doesn't hate Labyrinth Zone. I don't understand why people hate water stages in Sonic games. All those levels in Classic games were good in my opinion (except Aquatic Ruins). I agree with most of your opinions because this game is sure a lot of fun. To me Sonic isn't only about speed. The platforming needs to be somewhere too and they nailed it in this game. Marble Zone is my favourite stage from this game in terms of gameplay and Spring Yard is in terms of music. For me this game ranks A/S+. Wait until you hear the 8-bit versions of Labyrinth and Scrap Brain because they are very different and better than the originals (I recommend the FM versions).
100% Agree with you, Sonic’s speed comes from successful platforming through the levels! That’s why the games are so fun imo. I love just about all the water levels in the classic games. If you don’t mind me asking, what don’t you like about Aquatic Ruin? I’ll have to listen to the sonic 1 8-bit versions, thanks for the suggestions and the comment :) Just gave them a listen also and they’re great! I love how they are different but still have the same feel of their 16bit counterpart while still feeling like more than a remix
@@Eldarin Aquatic Ruin is somewhat wierd in level design. As Sonic 2 is sort of like an unfinished game (mostly due to the cut levels and unused time travel) going in the water there means death to me and staying on the top path is hard. 100% of the times I went into the water in Aquatic Ruin I drowned because I couldn't figure out how to get out of there. There's a lot of clipping through the floor by accident (not just in this zone) and it's the only time I felt stressed by going into water (in a Sonic game). It's this or I just don't understand how to play Sonic 2.
@@BWF6_Official Playing through Sonic 2 right now and I couldn't agree more about Aquatic Ruin. Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Act 3 were well paced and challenged the player to maneuver through water on a lifeline. Interesting opinion. I’m not seeing many people willing to defend the slower stages like Marble, or Labyrinth Zone. I can agree that he does control well slowly, but I don’t exactly think they all were the most fun. I think parts that dealt with waiting were quite unfun, but platforming was good. I just kind of have an addiction to speed, and Green Hill and sometimes Starlight zones are the levels to capitalize on Sonic’s physics. I occasionally come back to Sonic 1 for these stages. As I’m currently playing through literally every Sonic game, I have to point out something. This might be useless information because I’m like... 2 years late, so you might already know this now. You called Sonic 1 for the GameGear/Master System a port. To me, it’s essentially a completely different game. It shares concepts, but I think it’s unique enough to be considered a separate game.

Heya! I found your channel through the Adventure concept art video recently, and thought it was cool, so now I'm here checking out your older videos. I played Sonic 1 for the first time a few months ago as a newbie to Sonic, and I enjoyed it a lot. I think it's a solid game and a great base for the Classic games. I agree with your thoughts on Sonic's speed. Personally, I feel the number one aspect of Classic Sonic's gameplay is mastery; learning to control Sonic efficiently, memorizing layouts of stages, and figuring out strategies for particular problematic sections, all coming together to get that fabled Sonic speed, and I'd say Sonic 1 demonstrates this fairly well overall. Your take on Marble Zone, Labyrinth Zone, and Scrap Brain 3 are definitely unpopular. I found them fairly enjoyable while playing, but I think they aren't very good Sonic levels all around. Without the aspects of Sonic's speed, physics, momentum, all of that fun stuff, it sort of just reverts back to being a regular platformer. Another thing to note is that they have almost no alternate paths - sure, there are secrets here and there to find, but they're never fully separate paths - which means not only are you doing something potentially unfun, it'll be the same on every playthrough. Combine that with Sonic 1's three Act structure and you can get some Zones that are a real slog. I still think they're fun just because Sonic himself is enjoyable to control, but I wouldn't call them great levels, on the gameplay front anyway. When compared to levels from later Sonic games they just don't hold up. I'll give them this though, when it comes to presentation, they're awesome. My favourite Zone is Green Hill. It's been talked to death at this point, but it's clearly the stage that really shows off what Sonic could be. Flying off ramps, using speed to reach new heights, secrets to find and alternate paths to explore, it's just one heck of a level. I kind of like how Sonic's lack of a Spindash works in this stage, requiring you to think about how to build up speed if you want to reach certain areas. It's good stuff. I agree with your stance on Spring Yard, it's just kind of there. They didn't nail the casino aesthetic until Sonic 2 (and arguably haven't done it that well since, haha. Casino Night is a banger). Star Light Zone has good music, but it was a pretty forgettable Zone for me honestly. In part, I think that's because I only played through it once or twice, since I had improved enough at the game by that point to beat it and Scrap Brain fairly easily. I find the visuals pretty awkward, the cityscape in the background looks cool but the foreground is just industrial stuff made of muck green. This is a stage I would have loved to see redone in Mania or Generations (I haven't played either just yet, but I don't believe it is in either game. If it is, I'm looking forward to it, haha). Scrap Brain was also a bit forgettable, probably for the same reason, but I remember enjoying the precise platforming. It felt like a true test of skill. Still not a huge fan of Act 3 though, the cool concept of climbing back to Eggman is a little damaged by the "Ugh, it's Labyrinth Zone again" reaction I'm sure many people had when seeing it for the first time, haha. Also, the Special Stages are just meh for me. Not too bad, just kind of annoying. Overall, great review! I'm interested to see if Sonic 1's placement on the tier list changes at all in later videos, because I definitely don't agree with giving it an S Rank. It's a fun game, but I'd say Sonic 2 and 3 far surpass it, and arguably CD as well. Still, even if it's been surpassed, Sonic 1 is a classic, and provided a really strong place to start for Sonic 2 and 3 to iterate on (and perfect) the formula.
Hey there! So happy to hear you enjoyed the concept art video + this one, I totally see and respect where you are coming from in regards to the stages and all! Let me know what you think of Mania and Gens also btw I’d love to see Whatca think. I always liked sonic 1 although there is no spindash the levels accommodate to that so you really feel that sense of speed when you get going.Thank you so much for watching and hope you enjoy the rest!
When you talked about how your opinion of Scrap Brain changed on your 2nd play through, I found it to be so relatable. With every play through of Sonic 1, I feel my opinion of Zones always changes for me, but I always enjoy Sonic 1. I find it so interesting to see someone like this game for some of the aspects of it that I disliked and some of the aspects that you didn’t enjoy were some I absolutely had fun with… so interesting to see people love the same things with completely different reasoning. 😀😀
I'm relatively new to Sonic. I've played some titles before in the past, but I never got past the first act/zone without losing interest. (Ironically the farthest I got in a Sonic game was playing Sonic Chrono Adventure, a fan game I somehow found maybe 6 or so years ago.) Nonetheless, I recently I started getting into the franchise. I just finished Sonic the Hedgehog yesterday and I have to say I missed out all these years. I didn't know any of the zones after Green Hill Zone, so it was a surprise when I realized that most of the levels afterwards weren't as "unhindered" in speed as GHZ was. I'm know I'm not the first to think this, but it seemed like a contradiction: A game about being fast with levels that punished you for being fast. Yet your idea of classic Sonic being about (Lemme see if I can paraphrase it right) mastering the momentum of Sonic's movement to platform efficiently rather than just "being fast" really opened an eye. Your interpretation of speed being the reward of 'mastering momentum' rather than the action of the game was surprisingly insightful. And it makes *sense.* So even though Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't all what I expected, I really did enjoy the zones. Marble Zone was a fun challenge; Labyrinth Zone forced me to tone down my instinct to sprint through levels like I do in other platformers; Scrap Brain Zone had me moderating Sonic's speed and acceleration to get past the flamethrowers, pistons, saw blades, and trapdoors; all the levels that were notoriously hated (I had some hate in the process as well :p) for stopping players to a halt were actually enjoyable and beatable after multiple rounds of Game Over's. And after all that, the speed came naturally. Wow, sorry, this dragged on long. P. S. Have you listened to Tee Lopes's renditions of this game's OST? Golden.
I was in the same boat as you for the 2D games just a few months ago and had a similar reaction! I'm so glad you are enjoying them and it really means alot that you liked my interpretations of the zones and sonics physics . Let me know what you think of the other games when you get around to playing them...Also yes Tee Lopes OST is fantastic for this game, check out the Ice Cap Zone remix he did also..wont disappoint ;)
Mobile Sonic is NOT the same as Sega Ages, but it was built from the ground up by Christian Whitehead. Some major differences is that mobile Sonic 1 has more of a forward view than the Sega Ages one, which opted to keep the Sega Genesis camera angle. Mobile Sonic allows you to see further ahead… also the mobile remake was made from the ground up to be compatible with phones while Ages was just a port of the original Genesis rom with modes added from the mobile port. Over all, both the Whitehead and Ages versions are both equally good… one gives you better visibility and the other gives you a drop dash. Sorry if this feels like a standard, “Um actually” but I didn’t want people to assume that the Whitehead remake got taken down from mobile based on the confusion here. Your video is great and I’m a fan of your work, but I did want to clarify this in case ppl give you flack.
thank you so much for watching! yeah I really liked labyrinth personally but I understand its not everyone's cup of tea. Happy to hear you enjoyed the video and stay tuned for more!
Okay so this is the new comment after playing Sonic.T.H.1 (S.G/M.D, 1991 Og). So I’ve only played Sonic.T.H.1, Sonic.T.H.2 and Sonic.T.H.CD on my Iphone and Ipad. What happened what that I played Sonic.T.H.1 & Sonic.T.H.2 on my Ipad 8 month’s ago. So when trying to use debug mode with Sonic & Tail’s, Insta-Sheild, Elemental-Sheild and Debug-Bug. However, when trying to do the Debug-Code, it wasn’t working, when pressing the code like 1, pressed it and went to 11 and so tried to do that for my IPhone and trying to go to Debug-Menu, few tries, only Green Hill Zone, then weirdly I played through game and I believed I did Sonic only in 2nd save and then Sonic with Tail’s in 1st save in a day I think, got all the Chaos Emerald’s in both btw. 2nd day I think, Tail’s & Knuckle’s so I did all 4 save’s so good, dot dot dot, idk. So I’ve beaten 4 save’s before Mania Plus came out in 2017, beat it 8 month’s ago and a few day’s ago, I think there was another playthrough but I don’t remember. So for this I’ll talk about Sonic.T.H.1, I am not too much of a fan of this game. The physic’s aren’t bad but sometime’s are unresponsive, especially when Spin-Dashing + jumping were I tried ro move him mid-air but he (also Tail’s & Knuckle’s are unresponsive). Also happen’s when rolling he’s also feel’s unresponsive after doing the Spin-Dash, running then rolling and rolling on a slope were I tried to move them but they don’t respond. Level’s actually are not bad, it’s the control’s that I talked about that make’s it annoying. It also effect’s most of the bosses imo but not the Final Zone it’s I believe the easiest imo (when having the Spin-Dash) and the Labrynth Zone (misspelling) boss isn’t that bad when you careful and plus I got through in the 1st save without damage. I like Star Light Zone and Green Hill Zone (not as much tbh). Marble Zone isn’t bad tbh, boss is annoying due to control’s, also when playing as Sonic with Tail’s, just Tail’s alone and Knuckle’s, I alway’s go through use the Knuckle’s route in Marble Zone. Spring-Yard Zone is decent but the section with the shield in the bumper’s are the worst and annoying (I believe it was in Act 2, I forgot). Labrynth Zone (misspelling) is fine imo, I don’t think the control’s were that bad in Labrynth Zone but I don’t remember. Star Light Zone is pretty good but the control’s, the trampaleen (misspelling), Badnik’s in Act 3 are annoying. Still it is good and a Zone I’ll come back most of the time as Sonic with Tail’s, 2nd is Final Zone and 3rd is Green Hill Zone. Scrap Brain Zone, use the top route in act 1, act 2 is annoying in the beggening (misspelling), still throughout it, act 3 is too when trying to do the fastest route but the tight space. Final Zone is fine, I think it should’ve been just called Scrap Brain Zone act 4 or something (idk) but it doesn’t matter. Special-Stage’s, don’t think it’s bad but feel’s inconsistent with the difficulty but I just restart the level. Also for all 4 save’s, Special Stage’s, I got them from Green Hill Zone - Spring-Yard Zone, if I lost ring’s I just restart the level and try to get 50 ring’s. Also I don’t think most of the time I get 100 ring’s to beat a stage cause in Mania Plus,(currently) I get like hundred’s of ring’s but in the mobile game’s I don’t. So overall I think it’s a 7/10 for me, prefer Sonic Mania Plus imo, it’s the easiest game (really) and less annoying and offer’s more then the Sonic.T.H.1 mobile imo. This is my opinion btw, not fact. Also appreciate the fact’s you mentioned.
With Sonic games, I tend to prefer speed over platforming, so this game in particular has been a bit difficult for me to complete. I’ll definitely have to practice my patience with the platforming. Also since I have the Steam port of Sonic 91 and I play my pc games with an Xbox One controller, I quickly learned that the early Sonic games were not meant to be played with a thumbstick!! I constantly have to remind myself to use the D-pad.
I'm in the same boat as you with using an xbox one controller and steam ports of the genesis games...in my opinion, what makes games like sonic 1 so great even to this day is that the speed comes from precise platforming giving the player a real intrinsic reward and feeling of satisfaction/accomplishment when they're able to blaze thru a level being ready for what's ahead of them. I feel the later genesis games are able to balance the two better, but thats just me. Thanks for watching!!
Finally! Another Marble Zone fan! Edit: oo and you like Labyrinth as well? Same! I love the platforming aspects of Sonic games and Sonic 1 does that really well.
Appreciate it, funny enough it was my own doing lmao. I put -26db + the reduction YT does thinking the audio would sound good and welp...here we are xD
There might be misspellings in there I only played this game on mobile along with Sonic 2&CD (haven’t beaten them yet) I played all 4 saves with Sonic solo first then Sonic & Tails (my prefer way of playing), Tails solo and Knuckles. Sonic is pretty good in terms of gameplay physics and controls but sometimes he feels unresponsive when rolling down or up or hitting a wall and still in ball mode which is annoying and sometimes in air he’s also unresponsive like when trying to avoid an enemy I tried to jump away (weirdly) he doesn’t move in the direction I wanted him to be and then he gets hit. I’d say Sonic 2 controls better CD idk I have to play that. Sonic with Tails is great my prefer way of playing the game. I prefer Sonic 2 sprite over Sonic 1 and I wish there was an option to have Sonic 2 sprite that’s my opinion at least. Tails controls and gameplay is good nothing to say. Knuckles is the usual he has a less higher jump which is dumb but he can at least glide and climb walls but for some reason he can’t cling onto walls when Knuckles is right next to it. Green Hill Zone: It’s fine but I prefer Emerald Hill’s estheitics. I think it would’ve been better the sky was brighter like Emerald Hill Zone’s sky and I can see the ocean a bit more. Would’ve liked the back ground to be a bit more like how it was in proto Sonic 1 Green Hill (the photo that’s something like welcome Sonic) and Mania Plus Act 2 idk that’s my opinion. The level design is good but Mania Plus imo is better but at least Sonic 1’s Green Hill Zone is the better level (next to Star Light Zone). Marble Zone: It’s also fine but idk it’s not as fun to me since I need to be careful and it’s not cause it’s slow. The slower platforming zone isn’t that bad I’m more of a slow player anyways. The Badniks is a bit annoying. Spring Yard Zone: Enemies are annoying as usual I know there enemies but in Mania Plus it isn’t the case (as much). The worm Badnik thing isn’t that annoying just roll onto the head and that’s it but the flying Badniks are the more annoying onces. I hate the tighter space and moving block sections and the moving spike block hall way sections I only stay in the higher route. Labrynth Zone: More annoying enemies and sadly there in spots were you’d get hit no matter what. Annoying swinging spikes, tight space (especially in the boss battle which is more of a chase). It’s not that bad of a zone the problem isn’t that it’s slow it’s that the controls are made slightly worse but not because Sonic is slower but the problem’s I mentioned earlier. Star Light Zone: My favorite but wish the zone looked brighter and wasn’t just green which the green in the zone isn’t my favorite, the city should’ve been brighter like in Sonic 2 HD Chemical Planet idk. Annoying enemy like the exploding Badniks and spiky Badnik you can’t hit unless Sonic gets hit. Scrap Brain Zone: It isn’t as hard I think Act 1 is easier with knowing the levels, staying in the higher route and being fast in certain sections. The moving platforms are annoying, and annoying enemies. Act 2 is a bit easier still annoying and Act 3 is the easiest when using the short cut. Shield I wish delfect projectiles. That’s all I have to say.
Hi, I just wanted to mention that the mobile version of sonic 1 isn't the same as the sega ages one on switch. The switch version doesn't have tails or knuckles, and the mobile version doesn't have the drop dash. BTW your videos are great!

And it makes *sense.*
So even though Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't all what I expected, I really did enjoy the zones.
First Sonic game was Sonic Advance 3? One of your favorites is Heroes? Welp, time to binge this whole channel.
Hope you enjoy it! Have a new one coming out tomorrow :))
Eldarin: I think labyrinth zone is my favourite zone in the classic games. Me: your gonna regret that
888 views ✨✨✨✨ :3 EDIT: This review is so good. And I cannot beileve you like Labyrinth Zone, that’s so rare. Have a nice day
thank you so much for watching! yeah I really liked labyrinth personally but I understand its not everyone's cup of tea. Happy to hear you enjoyed the video and stay tuned for more!
@@Eldarin No problem, and keep up the good work 🎉🎉🎉✨✨✨
Okay so this is the new comment after playing Sonic.T.H.1 (S.G/M.D, 1991 Og).
This is the quietest video on RUclips
lmao yeah it was my first upload and per usual i goofed the audio, thanks for checking it out though!
@@Eldarin Yeah getting used to LUFS is a learning curve for sure. The 26db reduction RUclips's done here is crazy.
Still great videos, don't stop.
Appreciate it, funny enough it was my own doing lmao. I put -26db + the reduction YT does thinking the audio would sound good and welp...here we are xD
There might be misspellings in there
I only played this game on mobile along with Sonic 2&CD (haven’t beaten them yet)
I played all 4 saves with Sonic solo first then Sonic & Tails (my prefer way of playing), Tails solo and Knuckles.
Green Hill Zone:
It’s fine but I prefer Emerald Hill’s estheitics.
Marble Zone:
It’s also fine but idk it’s not as fun to me since I need to be careful and it’s not cause it’s slow.
The slower platforming zone isn’t that bad I’m more of a slow player anyways.
The Badniks is a bit annoying.
Spring Yard Zone:
Enemies are annoying as usual I know there enemies but in Mania Plus it isn’t the case (as much).
The worm Badnik thing isn’t that annoying just roll onto the head and that’s it but the flying Badniks are the more annoying onces.
I hate the tighter space and moving block sections and the moving spike block hall way sections I only stay in the higher route.
Labrynth Zone:
More annoying enemies and sadly there in spots were you’d get hit no matter what.
Annoying swinging spikes, tight space (especially in the boss battle which is more of a chase).
It’s not that bad of a zone the problem isn’t that it’s slow it’s that the controls are made slightly worse but not because Sonic is slower but the problem’s I mentioned earlier.
Star Light Zone:
My favorite but wish the zone looked brighter and wasn’t just green which the green in the zone isn’t my favorite, the city should’ve been brighter like in Sonic 2 HD Chemical Planet idk.
Annoying enemy like the exploding Badniks and spiky Badnik you can’t hit unless Sonic gets hit.
Scrap Brain Zone:
It isn’t as hard I think Act 1 is easier with knowing the levels, staying in the higher route and being fast in certain sections.
The moving platforms are annoying, and annoying enemies.
Act 2 is a bit easier still annoying and Act 3 is the easiest when using the short cut.
Shield I wish delfect projectiles.
That’s all I have to say.
0:00 A Based Legend is born.
Came here after you mentioned the anti aliasing in origins
Yee
Green hill is not the only good zone in sonic 1 people and yes I Iike labyrinth zone and the special stages.
DUDE YES! A lot of the zones in this game are kinda slept on in my opinion...man I love sonic 1 ^_^. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed!
Hi, I just wanted to mention that the mobile version of sonic 1 isn't the same as the sega ages one on switch. The switch version doesn't have tails or knuckles, and the mobile version doesn't have the drop dash.
BTW your videos are great!
Thanks for pointing that out! I should get to doing a DX version of these videos at some point as I have alot I want to revise and change. Means alot that you enjoy my videos also :D
PLEASE REVIEW MEGA MAN GAMES
Wouldn't mind this if he was interested :D
no promises but who knows what the future holds ;))))
Your microphone level is very low, at normal listening volume we can’t hear almost anything.
Try boosting the mic up like 5db or so, and then playing it back at a higher than normal volume and testing to make sure it’s good.
Thanks for the response, my next video on Sonic 2 will be coming out soon and I will have the audio ironed out. It's wierd because my speakers sounded fine when I originally uploaded it, I will bump dB up either way though :)
@@Eldarin I'll check it out when it's out man! What software do you use? I'm a nobody, but slowly figured out my audio issues after doing some tweaking in OBS and in Resolve and my way of going about it is making my direct recorded audio slightly higher than I would like it... and then throwing a processing filter on top of it which levels it out a bit and sounds almost perfect to me.
RUclips could have also randomly fucked with it while uploading. It seems like sometimes they process videos and make them worse as fuck!
I'll be sure to check out that video. Keep it up!
@@GeorgeArthurJr Thanks I appreciate it, I will use your advice. Even if youtube toned it down, I'll bump the audio up so it sounds better.
Nitpick but why is sa2 before colors in the "wind back" intro
the "My Sonic Retrospectives" playlist is out of order
21:23 Absolute filth 😂
Based
I love labyrinth zone
Me: Ewwww. Hydrocity it better you are not in the water the entire time and it does not throw speed out the window like this zone does. Sonic is about going fast if you want a slow platformer there are other options.
Wow your pretty new
I don't like labrynth,marble and scrap brain act 3
The rest I love or I'm normal abt it
(1st comment in a month)
Finally someone else who likes labyrinth zone, I don't agree with starlight zone though I hate that level, too many bottomless pits, annoying enemies, boring level theme annoying gimmicks, ect.
Yes labyrinth zone is awesome and doesn’t deserve the hate it gets imo! I understand your feelings for starlight though! For me it’s the mix of the music, atmosphere and theme that really get it for me
i agree to disagree
I can respect that! 😎
@@Eldarin I do actually like the music in starlight it's just the level itself I hate
Do the advanced games
Reupload this video with increased volume, I can barely listen to your voice.
Thanks for the critique, I will have audio ironed out in the next video. When I uploaded originally the audio was good, mustve been a compression problem or something.
Holy shit this video sucked but it started a legend
lmao thank you, hey gotta start somewhere
