    I wish we had more concept art of Amy considering how drastic of a redesign she had. Would be cool to see how we went from Classic to Modern.

      That would be insane! The Perfect Chaos picture was probably my favorite out of the whole bunch..it blew me away when I saw it. @@caramelcandys Yes! I read somewhere (I'll try to find it) that Izuka said the Generations version of Perfect Chaos was always what the team "envisioned" him to look like while developing SA1 but the in-game technical limitations at the time held them back. (I can't get the actual magazine interview but here is the link to where I found it, its in the trivia section if interested: sonic.fandom.com/wiki/Perfect_Chaos_(Sonic_Generations)#cite_note-1)

    I always like when creators show their concept art to the public. It's really interesting to see how a game changed through the development cycle. When I first saw these Sega Saturn concepts I was impressed by how good it looked even for an old console with blocky 3D. Another good example is the concept art in Mega Man Legacy Collection 1&2 as some of the things there were also very interesting and not well known (for example in MMLC2 in the Mega Man 8 section there's concept art for Block Man's weapon from Mega Man 11, a game which released about 20 years later).

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 года назад +14

      SAME! The concept art pieces are so interesting in my opinion and how the translate to the final game. The Saturn pictures were so interesting in my opinion, remined me of the OG FF7 models for some reason lol. I haven't played Mega Man but I need to check them out, I heard the OG's and X are great! Thanks for watching as always and hope you enjoyed :)

    • @dcvmu
      @dcvmu 3 года назад +3

      That concept you're referring to in MMLC2 was a tease for MM11 prior to announcement, it wasn't actually from when MM8 was being made.

    • @BWF6_Official
      @BWF6_Official 3 года назад +2

      @@dcvmu This may be true but my point still stands as there are unused things that appeared in later games like the spring enemy which was cut from MM1 and returned in MM2 (as seen in the concept art section of the gallery).

    The colours aren't actually darker in the guidebook, if you try and recreate them based on the codes you'll see that. they just seem darker because of the scan itself. They're also by and large the colours still used today, with only minor changes- skin tones were lightened as were grey tones, but the reds, blues, etc are still the same.
    Also, that Tikal "final counterpart" is fanart inking exactly of that concept art sketch. The first official 2d art of Tikal only came with the Sonic Channel site.

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 года назад +17

      thanks for the heads up! It was brought to my attention about the Tikal coloring being done by KojiChao on SonicCult back in the 2003-2005 range, my mistake on that. That's an interesting fact about the colors though and I appreciate you pointing that out! Hope you enjoyed the video & thanks for watching :)

    1. I need to watch Big Hero 6 and My Neighbor Totoro
    2. Windy Valley's concept art was probably based off the Beta stage (although I couldn't find anything to confirm one way or the other but would make sense with the development process)
    3.(more of a correction on my end) The Tikal art is an offical sketch but the coloring was done by KojiChao around 2003-2005 on the website SonicCult.com!

    That chubby Knuckles clan dude at the end gave me a pretty good chuckle. I think I find the N64 / Saturn / PS1 era of development really interesting since you have these developers who were already experienced with 2D games trying to figure out how to get things to work in 3D. I'm glad that concept art being released to the public has only become more commonplace; it's fairly easy to buy artbooks online from the game developers and publishers. You've got a good voice and good editing. Keep up the good work.

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 года назад +1

      Hey thanks so much for the kind words :) I haven't really taken a dive down the N64/Saturn/PS1 rabbithole before but now that you mention it that would be pretty cool to check out. I find the concept art of these games from this era so interesting since its before alot of them could fully realize their vision compared to nowadays so it really makes for some interesting conversations as to "how" a certain piece would've turned out if the game was made in todays environment. A good example off the top of my head is that for Perfect Chaos in SA1 it wasn't until Sonic Generations (close to 15 years later) when they remade the fight and remodeled him that is what Sonic Team always wanted him to look like and I could only imagine for the other big titles from that era like Mario 64, OoT (which I really need to play) or Crash Bandicoot

    • @FourFaceButtons
      @FourFaceButtons 3 года назад +2

      @@Eldarin I feel exactly the same way. Unlike today, that was largely an era of compromise. Developers tried to push the hardware and see what they could get away with, which makes the differences between the idealized concept art and the final product that much more interesting. It was the wild west back then when the rules weren't as established and there was still a lot of new discoveries. I'm probably romanticizing it too much, but the idea is interesting to me.

    Great video! I appreciate your meme edits scattered throughout to keep things fresh and entertaining. The concept art you picked was varied, and instead of just showing off the art, you went through the effort to find out the artists, their roles, and footage of how the art appeared in the final game. I liked how you prefaced any opinion of yours with "that's just my opinion, though," because it gave you a humbleness I found admirable. If I had any criticisms, I'd say that you could cut down the video length by removing the mentions of "I found this interesting" scattered throughout. I feel the fact you featured it in the video shows that you found it interesting, and the viewer can decide if they too find it interesting on their own. Ultimately that's a nitpick. I appreciate the level of commitment you've shown towards making this a quality video. Thank you!

As for if I’m going to do an SA2 one, I am currently planning to but I can’t seem to find anywhere near as much concept art straight out for SA2 so what I may do is morph it into something a tad more specific than just “concept art of SA2” if that makes sense (kinda like what my most recent one is). Thank you! And yeah I'm playing through SA2 and have some content coming very shortly on it, but I forgot just HOW FUN the stages are in them. It's always been so interesting to me as to how different the design philosophy of SA1 vs SA2 (not in a bad way at all as they both excel in what they set out to do). I kinda think there can be an argument made if they should even be in the same subseries. I just recently went back to 100% SA1 and it was a blast but the SA2 completion experience so far has been FUN ASF especially due to the ranking and how to get the A ranks, you need to be good at the level and look cool doing it. So fun! :)

      @@Eldarin I COMPLETELY agree. My first time in SA1 was before preschool if I remember correctly. I got SA2 in 3rd grade and initially thought the tails/knuckles (and their counterparts) gameplay was boring, as many would argue now, but after many years (I'm in college now) of playing and playing SA2 (probably over 20 playthroughs tbh XD, and that's not counting just replaying levels for fun) I think tails and knuckles stages are just as fun as sonic's, if not more so tbh! Those stages breathe in the exploration and more methodical platforming that aren't present in sonic's stages, giving the game a very nice balance imo. And the MUSIC! The tone/story of SA2 is a sweet spot for the series imo as well. I would love to see another game take a genuine attempt to follow this up (but to be fair, Sonic 06 is kinda maybe my favorite sonic game, but that's off the record XD)

Both games are so awesome! (sorry for the late response also).
