I totally believe that he's perfectly happy with his career and profession. I saw him in concert in Utah in the 90s and he was wonderful. I think he enjoys the intimacy of a smaller audience and the fact that he able to mingle among his fans without the awkwardness of uber fame.
Cool interview. It can't be easy being the brother of a living legend but Livingston is very talented in his own right. I've seen him a bunch of times live and had the chance to meet him once or twice. Great music, great guy.
Livingston was a memorable opening act for Linda Ronstadt at an Aug. 11, 1978 concert at Centennial Hall on the campus of the U. of Toledo. My wife and I remember that his performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" had the packed house hushed by its jazzy beauty.
James has come to a venue in my town almost every summer since 1974. Such a funny and gracious man. All heart. (Pine Knob, Clarkston, Michigan.

What a smart, insightful man
Big fan of Livingston Taylor. He sounds happy, and like a person who knows EXACTLY what he wants, and knows how to get it, and maintain it. James Taylor is one of my all time favorite artists, and I am fortunate to have grown up with both of these wonderful artists.

This guy is awesome. I felt the same way about fame back when my sister was trying to "make it big". The industry was built to chew people up and spit them out. Only a select few survive fame with their sanity intact.

Liv is not only a fine writer and player - he's one of those poets who can really teach and we'd all do well to listen in once in awhile.

Thoughtful, interesting. High energy and passion shouldn't be confused with insanity, and the man is a performer. I don't agree with all he says, but it takes a grounded, empathic person to feel happiness for a loved one's joy and sadness for another's pain. He's done well for growing up in an alcoholic family.

I lived just outside of Aspen, CO, for a year, and met many, many extremely successful people. I only met one couple in all that time that seemed at all happy, even sane. It left me eternally grateful that I wasn't one of them.
This guy writes some great songs....and does a very entertaining show. I saw him, about 30 years ago, at Blues Alley in Georgetown.

NOT AT ALL who I thought he would be. Extremely impressed. I figured he would be a limp, sad man living in light of his famous brother. This guy seems like the successful one.
I love Liv, I go see him more than I do James. I hope to see him in Blowing Rock, NC this Spring. He is a great man just to sit and talk to. Get to the show early and he'll be happy to spend a few minutes with a fan.

I saw Livingston one night in east Tn at a club called down home. I wasn't in the club but heading home from a second shift job.as I came to a red light their was a guy standing on the corner smoking a ciggarette. I thought, I know this guy from somewhere, so I circled back and the man was gone.. then I looked up at the lights to see who was playing and I said why HELL fire that's why I thought I knew him! He looked just like James standing there. I hear he hangs around Jonesboro tn during storytelling,, but I never saw him their..
His "Liv" album is my favorite of all time. I can listen to it over and over and over.
i totally understand that he doesn't envy his brothers fame. not everybody has the same ambitions. he seems content and he certainly knows how to tell a good story

I heard a song the other day that I thot was being sung by a James Taylor...turns out it was Livingston! Gosh they sound alike!

fame and wealth warp reality
I'm like him, I could not tolerate fame.
Some love the spotlight, some don't.
I would suggest you view the rest of the series - btw, for an artist to be included in the LLM catalog a new release within the past five years is required. Liv does over 100 dates a year and has 16 studio CDs released like clockwork throughout his career. The newest (2005) "There You Are Again" is a great listen! He's sharing it - are you listening?
Liv is hardly anonymous. I would think the majority of James' fans know who Liv is and have at least heard him sing. He has also sung with James and appeared on an album or two. James has also covered some of his songs.
I have wondered how Livingston deals with James' success, especially given that he and James are both singer/songwriters. I think, as much I would love my brother, I would have a hard time with it. It's interesting that Livingston starts out stating that he would not want James's fame. But then, later in the video he says this: "As painful as it is sometimes, nothing is better for you than the success of people you know and love. Even when their success is painful for you..because you wanted it too in one form or another...Success of people you know is always good news." I'm guessing he and James have a somewhat complex relationship. I'd love to see them interviewed together.
I'm sure it's a complex better and that there's a fair amount of ambivalence.

Why do you have such a problem with the his being happy with who he is? Not everyone is dissatisfied with his life. Maybe you're the one who is completely nuts. Liv seems to be very well adjusted. You, on the other hand, do not.
I'm curious to know where you earned your doctorate in human psychology. My guess is that you graduated towards the top, if not the top, of your class. That must be the case since your able to asses someones psychological health just from viewing a short video. Most doctors require at least 6 to 8 hours of in person interviews and testing to uncover the more common psychiatric disorders. From what university did you graduate?
