  • Today's DIY is a how-to on Board and Batten. We take our boring dining room wall and dress it up to give the space a charming character. The total cost of this project was $80.00 We used a quart of white Ralph Lauren latex paint and about a pint of a custom gray for the top part of the wall. The board we used for the planks was just 3" fiberboard (1.23 per foot). The top molding is 1x4" pine board that Zeb custom built to fit. Most trim molding is around $2.00-6.00 depending on your taste. The cost may vary depending on your region and what the size of your project is.

Thanks for showing what you did for the end wall that has the rounded corner. I have been scouring RUclips trying to find someone that shows this. Love all the detail in your top molding as well. Looks good!

My favorite part was Zeb introducing himself! 😂 “Zeb here from Jami Ray Vintage!” Now you guys are so well known, no intro needed! 😊❤️

There wasn’t any coverage of adhering the battens to the wall. The only explanation was doing the math to get them spaced equally. Did they get attached to the studs? If not, how were they attached to the drywall???

Great question. I have the same one! Hopefully they see this.

You don't need to attach the vertical pieces to studs. They hold no weight. Just use brad nails and liquid nails, or some other kind of construction adhesive. You could probable get away with no adhesive at all and some caulk on the joints. Just remember that there is no turning back if you use the adhesive. If you don't like the board and batten in the future, you'll have drywall repair to do.

Yes, we're just renting. We get approval to do all of these projects. Our Landlord's are pretty easy going. (they are Zeb's Cousins)

Good video....but from what I've seen, traditional board and batten has a same sized board going horizontal across the bottom, above the baseboard? That might have saved time on the routering of the bottom of the vertical boards? Nonetheless, still came out very nice. Thanks for the upload.

We were renting this home so we changed as little as possible per the owners instructions. 😊

The board for traditional is actually wider than the one on top. The baseboard is installed onto the bottom trim and the baseboard’s width make the spacing for the top and bottom rails the same.

You really should build your corners before you attach them to the wall. Also, try using 22.5 degree angles at the seams joining fiberboard. Use CA glue. It's a much better join.

Did you cut the boards at a 45 degree angle at the bottom to fit better on your baseboards?

Question, we are in the middle of doing this in our dining room and we have 3 walls that are different sizes. Is it ok for each wall to have different size panels?

    • @JamiRayVintage

I did that with our living room walls after we did this wall. It looked great and you couldn’t even tell once the furniture was back in place

No 1/8" hardboard or 1/4" plywood back for inside panels? Walls are never as smooth as the raised panels & subject to damage much more easily.
