    • @differentbutsimilar7893
      @differentbutsimilar7893 Год назад +9

      TBF, ole David Gilmour has always been HEAVILY diatonic in his songwriting. Break down his solos and chord choices, and there's almost nothing special there, most of the time. He pulled most of his tension direct from phrasing - he had the precision in his bends, slides, and picking to do a lot of calculated plays on expectation, while also reaping the benefits of the diatonic approach's pleasant harmoniousness. You always kind of feel like you're in good hands with a good solo from him, yet it can still be completely captivating... maybe more so if you understand the components and realize how hard it actually is to make those progressions sound THAT interesting.
      I DO tend to agree now, though.
      I've noticed something I was used to seeing more in pop, which is sort of this distillation of "moments" in the song. All of the focus goes into showcasing those moments, but the context they sit in falters and it becomes just a reel of cool sounding stuff with each successive passage barely challenging OR justifying the last. So even the moments that DO grab me, are mired. We just kinda move on after a couple of stiff bars. I think the only way TO get away with that, is to write diatonic... if you start trying to use parallel modes, that same 'string of consciousness' approach goes from boring to just incoherent. IF all you write is to get to the next moment, then your big picture becomes a rat's nest, like a bad action movie. Realllllyyyy good jazz musicians get away with it, but those folks have phrasing. They perfect their phrases and develop languages with them - they can tell you all sorts of things even inside of a diatonic box because they have developed a rich language of tension and resolve through other avenues. Blues players are good for that occasionally, as well.
      The idea with a pop song is that it basically just needs a simple catchy thing in it that people love to get buzz - the rest can be boilerplate. People will give up on the song quickly if it doesn't have a hook they like. It's better to focus on just distilling that down and making it the main point of attraction - try not to turn people away by challenging them too much before they even get there. So you basically minimize anything challenging the foundation while still carrying the basic modal structure, take away all of that ambivalence, and keep it catchy. Have as little foundation as possible to avoid points of conflict in the melodies.
      FWIW, doing this well is definitely an art form. When it gets executed as a formula, it fails. Plenty of people have trouble even picking out what each mode sounds like, and what notes do that. Even harder, is taking those sparse notes, and making them sound new to people. I swear man, people who say "Every note has already been played in every possible way." unironically, are falling prey to the western diatonics. I tell them to try microtonal and let me know when they've heard all of the notes lol
      I feel like even a lot of big names are trying to capture that sort of catchy, diatonic and momentary songwriting approach, and I'm just begging them to write songs that sound newer to me on the 10th listen than the 1st. I'm tired of these hits that reactors go crazy for only for that buzz to largely have moved on in just one year's time. I can't keep having skittles for dinner over here. Can everyone else stop competing to feed me skittles please?

    • @brianbergmusic5288
      @brianbergmusic5288 Год назад +7

      Some folks give up on diatonic chord progressions altogether and pursue atonality / musique concrete / advant garde. The problem with atonality that I've observed is that the itch is kind of like a strange addiction. Ivy League became a sort of artificial bubble for this sort of thing since Stroberg-what's-his-name and Karl Stockhausen doing any sort of experiments on sound that do ANYTHING except be musical. Okay, maybe I'm being too harsh, but atonality is a lot like an extract in my culinary. I use Vanilla-Extract quite often in my baking and I encourage others to do the same for select recipes to make some dish more flavorful. However, I've heard that the alcohol-classification in Vanilla-Extract can be lethal if you become addicted to downing bottles of it.
      I'm going to assume that you are not that far gone yet and simply suggest that music does NOT need to abandon the Mecca of consciousness that is many centuries of exploring octaves split into twelves. Rather, I think the big problem is twofold. One is artists not pursuing excellence in their craft. Yes, there are a million ways that you can make a chord progression more interesting, go on a journey, explore strange modulations, seek out new intervals and weave elaborate tapestries of keys on the same motif. Classical music has done it for years, even while sounding epic and almost metal at times. Jazz takes a more whimsical approach, but it cannot be denied that jazz has the most complex harmonic vocabulary of them all due to the endless pivot points of options that it can elaborate. Sometimes, it's nothing more than phrasing and arrangement, as Mike H so generously described.
      The other problem is overstimulation. I'm not saying that you are guilty of this, but even music can be overconsumed, in my philosophical opinion. I've observed the plain ole' vanilla minor-one to bVI to bVII vamp become like ethereal sustenance again when an artist captures a moment that is done with complete conviction and strength of expression. Sure, those Iron Maiden chords are done to death, but when I've been far too busy in my life to enjoy music for a while, it catches me off guard and infuses my life with a moment of joy again. I think there is a time and place for everything under the sun, and I'm sick of being forced to consume music in public spaces (I'm pointing a finger a slut-pop, especially) when I would rather hear myself think and get my fricken shopping done and over with -- and that's coming from a lover of music.
      That being said... death metal and atonality -- awesome combination. I especially like Ron Jarzombeck's take on this fusion.

      I don't know if it would change anyone's mind, but for what it's worth, the album I released earlier this month has more going on stylistically/compositionally, as a whole. Whether it fits the criteria as an album - I'll leave that up to you guys as well, I'm open to all feedback.
      They may not be all prog, but my biggest influences are BTBAM, The Human Abstract, Protest the Hero, The Dear Hunter, Wretched, Periphery, The Faceless, ABR - in particular their older stuff. Someone else pointed out that what might have been considered prog or innovative in the past might not be prog today. That may be the case here.
      For the album, I tried to make something unique without forcing it, For Presence of Mind in particular, I wanted to write a fast song with hopefully a catchy "chorus".
