My parents once told me they had to cut my guitar lessons 'cause I wasn't getting any better, no matter how much time had passed and I felt really bad and disappointed so I told them that they're wrong and started practicing more and more, every single day of the week. Here I am, seven years later having a band and going to release our first album soon! Every time I hear about someone that gave up I just feel bad man..you just have to keep practicing and it will pay off! Also, can we just appreciate how rad the solo at the end is? My dude got me dancing damn!
hell yeah man, keep playin forever :) i think my adoration for the big names kept me aying my drums since i started. i had to learn not to compare myself, but just to learn and aspire to be great like them one day, bc Bonzo didnt just come out of the womb doing crazy triplets on the kick
@@dannyboi9552 Just remember dude, if it was easy then everyone would do it!;)) I bet Mr. John Bonham was spending the most of his time practicing and practicing man. That's why he's one of the best if not the best!! Just keep practicing my guy and don't try to compare yourself with everyone else because trust me, there's always gonna be someone better and at the end of the day you'll be disappointed like I did and most of us did when we were thinking about it!
Hehe, your parents probably did that cause they think your time was more worth investing into something else more important back then at that stage, thats why they cut it off, cause, whos going for guitar lessons all their life ?

Just bought my first electric guitar. If it was easy, everyone would do it. It's easy to get frustrated. It's easy to get distracted. It's easy to quit. I'm tired of easy. I will do this. I've heard people say you can't do this. They say you'll quit, you're no good. You won't make it, but you know what? They're telling their story, not mine..
Honestly, whether you have been playing for 5 months or 5 years, think back to when your fingers were hurting by simply fretting. Look back to when you couldnt keep a strum pattern going. Look back to when you couldn't alternate pick. Look back to when you were finally able to play your first riff decently. You're doing great. You and I compare ourselves to those professional guitarists that inspired us to learn the guitar. It sucks doing that to ourselves, but, as long as we continue on practicing and learning, we'll eventually reach that love. For me, I forget that some of these brilliant guitarists have been playing since their middle school years, if not younger, being able to practice up to 8 hours a day. I didn't buy my first guitar until I was 19 and working 8 hours a day. I wish you all the best and let's all continue to practice and jam out with other musicians when given the chance.
When I started playing (as an adult), I blamed myself for not starting younger, for not being laser-focused on music since my middle school years. Comparing your skills to those of people who have literal decades of head start on you is incredibly harsh and unfair to yourself.
As a modestly successful singer guitarist I have often been accused of having this mysterious thing called talent. Yes there is some talent involved like having a decent set of flexible, arthritis free hands, something not to be taken for granted at 63 yrs of age, and a good musical ear; but the main ingredient of a musical ability is playing often and in company of fellow musicians who can teach you a lot and help you hone your skills over time. Irish musical sessions, happening informally and often spontaneously in Irish pubs, were the stuff of my childhood and helped powerfully to develop my musical skills.
@@JustAPokemonCommentingOnVideos More like guitar George, strictly rhythm, I do not make it cry or sing, but occasionally I can make my audience cry.....
@@michaelblankenau6598 Yeah I do. Kids learn much faster than adults and have a lot of time on their hands. If a kid had the right mindset and really wanted to compose it's no surprise they got super good at it.
Robert Greene's book Mastery has impacted my life more than any other piece of media I've ever consumed. It talks about the value of practice, the 10'000 hour rule and gives many examples, from Einstein to Mozart, debunking every myth about born, innate "talent" we've ever been taught. A few years ago I got my daughter a keyboard for Christmas and within five day we were both playing full Beethoven sonatas. Skipped right past marry has a little lamb and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. All three of us (including a sixteen year old) have jobs in the arts and I take credit for none of it. My only regret is I didn't discover the value of practice till my 40s. The moment we collectively dismiss the myth of "talent" as a society we enter a 2nd Renaissance!
Stoned Mole the original comment was mocking that Yousician advertisement that pops up on every video lol. That was the joke. In all seriousness though, I strongly agree with what you said on stagnating.
@Sam Riley If you think that professional musicians practice until they're 100% certain that they'll never get it wrong, you're living in a fantasy-world

Been playing for about 30 years and I've learned way more in the last 10 with the advent of RUclips. Today's accessibility makes learning guitar WAYYYYYYY easier.
The "beginner" guitars are so much better than they were 30 years ago too. I know that has helped me stick with it. I still suck, but my living room walls don't complain.
Dude, I've been playing guitar for 11yrs and my progress is very slow. The only things I can play are basic major and minor chords and power chords. I even took some piano lessons to help me improve.
I've been playing guitar for up to 15years. Yeah I sucked then, but I don't suck anymore. Just keep in playing! Don't practice, PLAY! have fun. And you get there. You need to know your own limits though. I know I can't play like Satriani, but I can play Interesting stuff! Find your style and build it up!
Been drifting away from guitar and have been using the same box scales and ish, feeling horrible to be honest despite being a fast learner and have been playing for like 3 year I just feel like I'm loosing it, going to start practicing every day again and just enjoy the instrument way more than I did, I saw the damage it does not playing for days to even weeks, I need to have that spark I did when I started, hopefully I can get over this learning block and problem, hope you all make it to what you want to be someday!

@@ZirrahMoon hey man, Honestly I've been getting way better, what I did was set a time for practice 4 hours everyday, I start d by practicing the spidercrawl for hours, just improving accuracy and speed, then I went on to try and improve my theory and getting out of the box scale, I watched Paul Davids, he really taught me some good information on using scales and chords together in music and learning scales has opened my eyes to songs I've been learning, also learn the chromatic scale it's so worth it. Right now I'm learning some classical since it's different and could definitely help me improve my accuracy and build finger picking skills, just do what you think fits you best and start small, don't be afraid to explore different genres either they really helped me, blues especially, it uses theory in its music which really stands out when you learn it, hope you find what you're looking for, been practicing hard for the past month or two.

Jimmy Pages quote is so accurate, deep down inside we all have our own unique personality (even tho nowadays people plain refuse that because they wanna be "included"), and a real guitar artist is the one that finds his own personality, his own sensation and translates it into the melody
@@goncalobaia1574 u're damn right, i remember when i started with the guitar i wanted to imitate those guitar gods, i practiced and practiced for years, some time after i realized i'd never play like them, i was very sad, i wasn't going to be a famous musician. That's the mistake many people make, they want to achieve something just to be popular o impress someone, real happiness is inside us. Now I make songs, upload them to youtube and get 5 or 10 views (most of them are from myself), but wtf I'm happy.
You will probably never see this, but this has really helped me out. I was sitting here giving up on my dreams of being in at least a semi big band and I saw this. I have been playing for almost four years and have gotten pretty good for a thirteen year old. But I think I met the best skill I could in guitar. I cant really play fast or do anything really impressive but I had feel. And I believe that if you have that feel it dosent matter how fast you can play or how many fancy guitar tricks you know. And if you truly enjoy it, you can go far. But I kinda lost that feel. I was taking guitar lessons to try and improve and I just felt pressured to play and improve in guitar and that kinda ruined it for me. I had no joy in guitar, I would only really play it if I was practising for lessons or doing lessons. So I stopped doing lessons and that made me feel a lot better about guitar. But my dad was not happy I quit. He didnt argue with me or anything, he just kinda hinted that I wont be able to improve without them. I am almost completely taught with youtube videos and stuff so I was confident that I could still improve on my own. But I didnt. And a couple of weeks past and I was just sad and angry. Today I had a long talk about it and I just broke down when we got home. But seeing this gave me some more confidence that I can (maybe) still improve without needing to take these lessons. Now I am sitting here crying writing this comment, and I just wanted you to know that you helped me out a lot. Music is the only thing that makes me truly happy. Thanks.
your story is similar to mine. i started guitar when i was 8 after my parents persisted for me to pick up a hobby, and I've been taking lessons every thursday since then. it's been five years since I've started lessons, and I've barely accomplished anything in that span of time because of my lack of motivation as well as other mental factors. pretty much, i only got to learn the basics of guitar and learn a few chords at maximum. it sucks when i recall how much time i could have spent practicing, over the years. however, I've recently picked up my guitar a couple months ago after being inspired by a band, and since then, I've learned and memorized three new songs, as well as memorized the pentatonic scale, and learned how to write sheet music! a lot can happen in a short span of time if you dedicate time and effort into accomplishing your goals, and I'm happy to say that I'm on my way to achieving greater things. :) and i hope you find your motivation, too.
first off I'll say i wish I got into guitar at ur age man, that alone is a blessing. I'm barely taking it serious at 23 and ur commitment and the commitment of hvneycrisp is inspiring. Keep on going and find what motivates u to practice...it should always be for fun or even for expression of feelings etc. Thanks for ur post im getting back on the guitar grind
Keep this in mind... you're thirteen the older you get the more you'll mature and the more skill and experience you'll gain. Dont hold yourself to the same standard as someone who's an adult. Also try to learn a couple of your favorite songs. Dont worry too much about learning cords or whatever just play to enjoy it if you get what I mean.
Ha... you sound like me at 13... Bro, feel is important. Lots of fast shreddy players have too little feel... but you also need the skills. What you need is a teacher to show you TECHNIQUE... all those blistering hard things??? Yeah...big secret is, they aint that hard...you just need the KEYS that unlock them! Its the little technique you employ to make a hard thing easy. Like sweep picking... took me TEN DAMN YEARS to learn to sweep pick...know why? I was doing it DEAD WRONG for years... I had incorporated PISS POOR technique and committed it into muscle memory. Once it was explained to me PROPERLY (by an old jazz player actually....weird) I was melting arpeggios like Yngwie... Broaden your musical base, listen to more players, and seek out those who are BETTER than you and stick by their side absorbing everything they know. Once you've done that, the student becomes the master and you can move on to a more sophisticated teacher. It comes with time young homie... but TECHNIQUE is so huge... that and practicing enough. Add one skill per week and you'll be kicking arse soon. (for example, downward pick angle and edge picking for 6 note per string phrases, or learning a few modes)...Damn dude... I think guys like you need their own RUclips channel. Like, a channel solely dedicated to intermediate players who need to get over that hump to advanced... maybe Ill go buy a camera.
I have been playing guitar for decades. I’ve been in bands... But when I go into a music store, I will never pick up a guitar and plug it into an amp and try an amp or guitar after hearing kids Not old enough to shave yet in music stores that sound like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. they make me question whether or not I even know how to play the guitar. Now I know how stunned Clapton and Townsend felt when they went to see some new guy called Jimi Hendrix for the first time.I will never forget the look on Townsend’s face when he described how he felt after seeing Hendrix for the first time. He stood there with that thousand yard stare you see in Vietnam vets eyes , and then he snapped out of the stare into a chuckle. and he said the most difficult part of seeing Hendrix was, that the who had to go on after Hendrix .. I can’t even imagine what that must of been like to have to perform after Hendrix was the warm-up band. Can you imagine. Lighting is Guitar on fire, and knocking his marshals over, and then your band has to go on after that..
Quality of practice is more important than quantity of practice. You playing for decades doesn't mean much. For all I know you could have played 10 min a week making silly noises.

Namaste.
for a few years, one of my part time jobs was repairing broken orchestra and band instruments for an instrument rental company, last year i made the decision to start my own guitar company and make lutherie a full time career - i dont have any dependent children or serious financial responsibilities, and i have previous small business experience, so im ready to fall flat on my face if thats how it pans out - but i have too many ideas about guitar innovations to not at least make a stab at this.. im keenly aware that the custom guitar/lutherie industry is a mighty small pond and there are some mighty big fish already in there - so its nice to hear encouragement...
I’m currently watching this right now at the brink of tears from frustration. My dad bought me a guitar for my birthday during February, it’s currently August and so far I feel like I’ve progressed to basically nothing. In general, when it comes to picking up new skills and such, I’m almost never consistent when it comes to learning. I don’t know why I’m like this, and for once in my life I actually want to be good at something, even if it’s just a simple hobby. I burn out too easily, and that’s something I hate about myself. As of right now, I really only know the basics which are the E minor and E major chord. I’m attempting A minor but I’m failing miserably at it. Even the simplest of chords I should be able to play by now are extremely difficult. I just wish I could learn at the same pace as other people, and by being self-taught I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing.
I understand the feeling of burn out all too well lol. Part of what helps me in continuing on is not just learning pure theory, but also learning, at the very least, small portions of songs I like to help entertain myself while I’m learning, whether through tabs or theory. Learning guitar is a journey and there’s no rush. Just keep at it and play whatever has you picking up the guitar in the first place and you’ll see yourself improving if you stay consistent!
This reminds me of a quote my cross country coach told me recently “Some wait for inspiration, and the rest of us get up and go to work”. Meaning that we need to get up and work on what we want to do no matter what skill it is. We can’t just do nothing and think it’ll happene
Construction takes strength, endurance and ingenuity as well as time. Destruction only takes a weak and lazy mind that is utterly lacking in those four things needed to be constructive.
I actually needed this today. After spending some time with some incredible guitarists last week I felt like I was outclassed or didn't deserve to be there. All the thousands of hours I practice and I wasnt any closer to being able to hang with the big boys. I feel kinda ashamed to admit I haven't touched my guitar since. Think I'll go practice now though. Thanks man. ;D
Recently I was depressed because people were teasing me about my grades and I was determined to be the smartest guy but I fell in the trap as what u said and I gave up easily, and everytime I try again I always lost hope, but this video really overcome these problems of mine and I just want to say thank you for that and God Bless You
1:51 "You must be confident that you can become whatever you're dreaming of becoming, to foster the determination to practice and hone your skills. Equally you must believe that what you're doing has purpose, or else the passion for playing the guitar will not be able to fuel you." ~Music is Win
This is so great. I used to play a lot when I was a teen. Eventually I quit because I wasnt as good as I wanted to be at that age. I recently picked up the guitar again, and I'm making progress. I needed this time to mature. But I could only imagine how good I would be had I not quit for 10 years.
To be fair, my chair is so uncomfortable that it hurts my back. This distracts me from focusing solely on the raids. Similarly, a crap guitar with super high action and poor intonation will cause you to struggle more, possibly to the point of not being able to play much at all. Fortunately, you can often buy one for $100 that plays reasonably well.
I’ve been playing for like 14 years (took about 2-3 off in the middle or hardly played in that time) and have never been confident in my playing..... until last night, I left my band practice/jam praising myself for how well I was playing. 3 years ago I really started taking practice SERIOUSLY and working on technique, timing with metronome, and theory. Back when I was younger I’d just screw around and learn easy songs and noodled on the few scales/progressions I knew. I used to think that after a certain amount of time (5 years? 8 years? 10 years?) one day I would eventually just be good. 2 years ago I got in my first serious band with dedicated musicians, before that when I played with people we’d just learn a handful of songs to play a show or a party and then it would be over. I was so nervous playing with the band because all the other members were older than me and also played in the most popular rock band in my city. I felt like they were taking pity on me and just asked me to join because they’ve known me since I was a little kid and were friends of my brother. I decided then to join any other band that would have me, and from there on out I started going to any open jam night I could and will play with anyone anywhere I can. I finally feel like it’s coming together and last night on my way home from my NEW bands practice was the first time I told myself “I was crushing it in there”.
Man I just watched this, I am starting a band with my friend, and I am the guitarist and background vocalist (I’m ten years old) and this really inspired me and just thanks. I’ve been watching all of your videos lately because your really good at guitar 🎸 and this is an amazing video that I will never forget. And if I mess up or don’t like a song is sounding immediately, I’ll come back to this amazing video. Thank you so much, this inspired me a lot Edit: the guitar player/band that inspired me to play guitar again was Kurt cobain/nirvana and if I practice, and remember I have way more tools than Kurt cobain did, hopefully I can be like him at guitar 😀
Study the greats. Study the guitarists who came wayyy before Cobain. (there are many. Music that was recorded in, say, 1928 is the source for the music we hear today) Study, listen, learn. Above all...get with your metronome and work out with it. Do not make excuses. You must be able to keep time without having to think about it...no exceptions, no shortcuts. Go, my friend...go make music. Don't stop.
Learning guitar is allowing me to have some concept of chronoception. (Concept and perception of time) I am autistic and I'll be 40 this year and struggle with what to do with my time since I have no idea how much time is left. As I practice guitar, I learn it's ok to take life in piece meal, even if I never finish what I've started (to play guitar well by some standard) For now I just raise the bar based on yesterday's performance and not the image of what I think it should look like. It's almost the only journey I've taken that the experience is the journey, and not perception of what may lie on the other side of the mountain.
I am happy for you. It's NOT about the "Handicap". It's about what makes you happy and making others happy when you play. Remember THIS --- Not everybody can play music. Your playing, and having the ABILITY to play, is a total gift of the Gods.
Also good to know: the way you see yourself may often be different from the way others see you. Tu be honest, having been playing the guitar for a solid 17 years, well I know that I'm not a beginner anymore. I can easily play leaks I wouldn't even have dared dream of 10 years ago. But well... sill don't have the level of an Eddy Van Halan, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Vai or David Gilmour. But I'm just happy playing and I enjoy jamming with fellow musicians. And what a surprise to learn that some people I've played with admitted looking up to me as some kind of guitar god. Me????? Some of them even begged me to join their bands (knowing that at that time I had close to 0 experience of playing in a band). Alright my point was not to show off or anything like that. What I'm trying to point out is that although you may think you're not that great or even suck ('cause you're focused of what you can't currently do), there are people who will admire your playing. And you'd be shocked, you just wouldn't understand what they find so special in you. All in all, don't try to be the best musician, don't look for gratification. Play because you like it. Improve because you want to go beyond what you already do, that's all that matters. And the 3 secrets to improve: practice, practice and.. er...what was the third one.. oh yeah! practice!
I'm kind of the same way. I've been in some bands, and during some breaks at various gigs I would be talking with some other musicians and almost immediately, the leader of the band's I would be in would come over and threaten the other musicians if they EVEN THOUGHT about stealing me. Sure it's flattering as a Musician, but I don't think of myself as that good. I just do what I do.
@@rayjingloryproductions3770 i am 51 and picking up a guitar for about the 3rd time in life , even though i own a few . i have been an artist for about 35 years , and people rave about my drawings and always praise how good they are , in my mind I still am not that good , I see every mistake I make but as artists whether with a pencil or a singer or musician we tend to be our own toughest critics . we will probably never be satisfied with our own skill and talent and because of that it drives us to be better every time. we may never reach a point where we think of ourselves as good or good enough but we will sure impress the hell out of a lot of others trying to satisfy our selves
I restarted to play a few months ago and started to practice new genre. Learned a ton of new chords, sus stuff over six frets. And a few new pentatonic patterns. Don't give up on your guitar you WILL get better at playing. So many light bulb moments.

Maybe, but if you really want results, practice. Taking lessons works best though when coupled with practice, but at least find a friend you know has good ears and has the courage to tell you what you should improve. And as an instructor I would be irresponsible if I didn't mention practising with a metronome will help every other facet of your playing, not *just* your timing.

I think what @tomosoos means is that for many guitarists competition and being better than other people is what fuels them, when in reality the most beautiful thing about music and guitar playing is in how it allows artistic expression. So stop comparing yourself and just create something you love
Go watch any Nirvana live footage and pay particular attention to Kurt. When you get down to it, he was not a particularly good singer or guitar player. Yet, he is one of the most influential musicians of all time. What makes Kurt Cobain such a special guitar player is not his skill with the instrument, but how he turned his shortcomings into his own sound.

The reason why i gave up : The songs i wanted to play were more towards the fingerstyle spectrum of things. But my teacher told me i needed to learn to play with the pick first and then slowly work my way up to fingerstyle arrangements which would take months at least and so i had nothing to motivate me, the songs i played initially didn’t move me. Why I started back up after 2 years : I remembered my love for the songs that inspired me in the first place. Nothing else matters, Stairway, the interstellar theme song... and i said fuck it I’ll start with fingerstyle. And that was it 🎸♥️ So practice routines aside, play songs that you love and that make you fall in love with the instrument everyday.
It’s been a 10 yr journey so far. I love my guitars and play for hrs daily. I make the time because it is my passion. I work full time and I am a mom. Guitar is my drug of choice. It’s been tough at times trying nail a song or a lick but I never give up. My passion and obsession won’t let me. It took me 10 yrs of practice to nail Back in Black! But I did it because I wouldn’t give up. I wanted this badly!
I love guitars, and have been playing them, for many years. Here's the secret; your learning, and capability, doesn't rise on a gentle curve. It's like you jump up to a new plateau, or mesa. Just when you think your sucky playing won't get any better, it does! By an order of magnitude! So, don't ever give up.
I needed this. For the past few years I've been in a rut and have fallen into every trap you listed in the video. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you to buck up and keep at it. Thanks man 👍. Music Is Win and you are Win.
One of my favourite guitarist wrote one of my favourite songs when I was starting to learn guitar. We are the same age. That is really depressing for me.
I’ve been a single string warrior for a while, but I’m on my way now. I’ve learnt chords A, D, E and Em. I just add a new chord to the list every week.
Music is art. What art is good is purely an opinion. Therefore, anyone who tells you you suck doesn't even know what art is or even that music is an art form. Basically this means they suck at life.
Aylbdr Madison If musician B can execute every technique properly that musician A can, it follows that musician B is objectively more capable with the instrument than musician A is. In the context of this video, sucking most likely refers to technical ability rather than artistic expression (which cannot be objectively evaluated). In the framing of your comment, I agree that an artist cannot suck at art. I know you were just saying some kind words, but I think this is a distinction that musicians should be aware of.
Learn the E major chord A major chord and D major chord. Play A D E in a cycle. Now you have a song with a I-IV-V progression in A. Now learn which finger to move down one fret in order to change those chords from major to minor. Now learn power chords so you can play rock (it's a major chord without the 3rd... so its only the root and the 5th) Now learn the barre chord versions of those chords so you can move them all over the place. As a vocalist I know this well LOL
I felt that. Thank you 🖤
When I started playing (as an adult), I blamed myself for not starting younger, for not being laser-focused on music since my middle school years. Comparing your skills to those of people who have literal decades of head start on you is incredibly harsh and unfair to yourself.

"Talent" is a mindset. If you can teach yourself the right mindset, you can get good at anything

and i hope you find your motivation, too.
first off I'll say i wish I got into guitar at ur age man, that alone is a blessing. I'm barely taking it serious at 23 and ur commitment and the commitment of hvneycrisp is inspiring.

Yeah
What’s it called
Are you better now?
This reminds me of a quote my cross country coach told me recently
“Some wait for inspiration, and the rest of us get up and go to work”. Meaning that we need to get up and work on what we want to do no matter what skill it is. We can’t just do nothing and think it’ll happene

I really want to lear it but cant find the tabs. help
Thanks, man.
And while Rome wasn't built in a day, it pretty much burnt down in one night. ;-)
Construction takes strength, endurance and ingenuity as well as time. Destruction only takes a weak and lazy mind that is utterly lacking in those four things needed to be constructive.
Yeah like those who achieved success and commit suicide after that.
It may even be burnt down many times
It's always easier to destroy, then to create.
Lol
I've watched all your videos and this is without a doubt my #1. Hits home brother. Bless you always.

I love seeing John Mayer in any video. It just makes me happy
Thanks man. ;D
Man I really needed this today. Not just in guitar playing but this is a great lesson for anything you do in life.
Recently I was depressed because people were teasing me about my grades and I was determined to be the smartest guy but I fell in the trap as what u said and I gave up easily, and everytime I try again I always lost hope, but this video really overcome these problems of mine and I just want to say thank you for that and God Bless You
Bring a guitar to class and pull a twisted sister, I BELIVES IN U!!
It’s a blessing that you’re using your platform to shed light on a sensitive subject like this, thanks for making my day
1:51 "You must be confident that you can become whatever you're dreaming of becoming, to foster the determination to practice and hone your skills. Equally you must believe that what you're doing has purpose, or else the passion for playing the guitar will not be able to fuel you." ~Music is Win
thank you I needed this tonight. just had a rough practice
This is so great. I used to play a lot when I was a teen. Eventually I quit because I wasnt as good as I wanted to be at that age. I recently picked up the guitar again, and I'm making progress. I needed this time to mature. But I could only imagine how good I would be had I not quit for 10 years.
Story of my life also
I do exactly the same...
An important lesson to be learned here. In fact it applies to all facets of life.
We all start on the bottom rung.
Start climbing.
I don't suck at games, I just need the perfect gaming chair.
Dont worry it’s only £399
Nah dude, its the gaming socks
To be fair, my chair is so uncomfortable that it hurts my back. This distracts me from focusing solely on the raids.
Similarly, a crap guitar with super high action and poor intonation will cause you to struggle more, possibly to the point of not being able to play much at all. Fortunately, you can often buy one for $100 that plays reasonably well.
@@elytolson983 WHOOOT, you never played tuber simulator?
@@aylbdrmadison1051 There is this YTber that has high guitar action but he shreds soooo.... high action is a poor excuse lol
Thank you for the motivation and inspiration.
I like your assessment. l have played going on 57 years and learn every day thru arthritis pain.
The only 3:00 am revelations I ever get is the urge to pee.
Thank you so much, this inspired me a lot
Edit: the guitar player/band that inspired me to play guitar again was Kurt cobain/nirvana and if I practice, and remember I have way more tools than Kurt cobain did, hopefully I can be like him at guitar 😀
Don't stop.
Thanks man!
@@mikea3925 sorry for the late reply. I would love to hear your songs.
Learning guitar is allowing me to have some concept of chronoception. (Concept and perception of time)
I am autistic and I'll be 40 this year and struggle with what to do with my time since I have no idea how much time is left.
As I practice guitar, I learn it's ok to take life in piece meal, even if I never finish what I've started (to play guitar well by some standard)
For now I just raise the bar based on yesterday's performance and not the image of what I think it should look like.
It's almost the only journey I've taken that the experience is the journey, and not perception of what may lie on the other side of the mountain.
I am happy for you.
It's NOT about the "Handicap".
It's about what makes you happy and making others happy when you play.
Remember THIS --- Not everybody can play music.
Your playing, and having the ABILITY to play, is a total gift of the Gods.
buying a guitar at 40 > buying a Corvette at 40
Also good to know: the way you see yourself may often be different from the way others see you.
And the 3 secrets to improve: practice, practice and.. er...what was the third one.. oh yeah! practice!
ive never seen anyone play a leak is it a welsh guitar.
Thanks a lot for sharing this.
Now this is what I call content.
So inspiring, man! And what a beautiful solo.
I restarted to play a few months ago and started to practice new genre.
Learned a ton of new chords, sus stuff over six frets.
And a few new pentatonic patterns.
Don't give up on your guitar you WILL get better at playing.
So many light bulb moments.
Thank you Tyler. I was really feeling low as I couldn't play the solo from Tornado of Souls. Let's hope that after watching this I'll be able to play that solo in some time 😁😃
Maybe, but if you really want results, practice. Taking lessons works best though when coupled with practice, but at least find a friend you know has good ears and has the courage to tell you what you should improve. And as an instructor I would be irresponsible if I didn't mention practising with a metronome will help every other facet of your playing, not *just* your timing.

"Whatever you do, however hard you practice, there will always be a little, obscure Chinese boy that's better than you"
The world is over saturated with skill obsessed guitarists who will NEVER contribute to art. Strangely sad
Can you please explain a bit?
You would think that there would be tons of at least one hit wonder, but really, mostly all copy someone else.
Welp, that’s depressing, realizing I might actually be one of them guitarists
Can you elaborate
I think what @tomosoos means is that for many guitarists competition and being better than other people is what fuels them, when in reality the most beautiful thing about music and guitar playing is in how it allows artistic expression. So stop comparing yourself and just create something you love
Go watch any Nirvana live footage and pay particular attention to Kurt. When you get down to it, he was not a particularly good singer or guitar player. Yet, he is one of the most influential musicians of all time. What makes Kurt Cobain such a special guitar player is not his skill with the instrument, but how he turned his shortcomings into his own sound.
Not a particularly good singer?
The skill is where he saw it fit, he didn't compare himself to Satriani or Petrucci like everyone today
My grandad who got me a guitar told me Nirvana was just "noise."
@@stablegenius465 well TBH IDK if they did because I'm 15 and I listen to newer bands but it kinda surprised me for some reason, I thought they were iconic?
@Sïôro He's often referred to as "The Voice of a Generation", so yeah, he is one of the most influential musicians of all time. You're just being biased.
The Sex Pistols sucked and they changed the world
Lars Ulrich sucks and has inspired millions
@@Tombrosapien lmao
The Sex Pistols sucked.....and they still suck!
Primus sucks... but totally not in the way you would think a band would suck.
I would disagree. They are way better than most beginner bands. They can actually keep a beat and play pretty tight together
The reason why i gave up :
The songs i wanted to play were more towards the fingerstyle spectrum of things. But my teacher told me i needed to learn to play with the pick first and then slowly work my way up to fingerstyle arrangements which would take months at least and so i had nothing to motivate me, the songs i played initially didn’t move me.
Why I started back up after 2 years :
I remembered my love for the songs that inspired me in the first place. Nothing else matters, Stairway, the interstellar theme song... and i said fuck it I’ll start with fingerstyle. And that was it 🎸♥️
So practice routines aside, play songs that you love and that make you fall in love with the instrument everyday.
I didnt notice i was giving up on playing guitar..theres like..two days i dont pick it up, after a week of practicing everyday. Thank you

I really love how encouraging the tube guitar and bass community is. Thank you all.

This is great advice that actually has substance. Thank you.
One of my favourite guitarist wrote one of my favourite songs when I was starting to learn guitar. We are the same age. That is really depressing for me.

No you’re supposed to light it on fire then piss on it.

I’ve been a single string warrior for a while, but I’m on my way now. I’ve learnt chords A, D, E and Em. I just add a new chord to the list every week.
So are you saying I suck? Not cool man. Nah, just kidding.
Music is art. What art is good is purely an opinion. Therefore, anyone who tells you you suck doesn't even know what art is or even that music is an art form. Basically this means they suck at life.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 Well said🤘
Aylbdr Madison If musician B can execute every technique properly that musician A can, it follows that musician B is objectively more capable with the instrument than musician A is. In the context of this video, sucking most likely refers to technical ability rather than artistic expression (which cannot be objectively evaluated). In the framing of your comment, I agree that an artist cannot suck at art. I know you were just saying some kind words, but I think this is a distinction that musicians should be aware of.
i progress faster on guitar than singing.
you could do everything right and still sound bad. singing is harder. especially for introverts
I don't suck, I just need a better guitar.
I think Telecaster is good enough...(chuckle)
1:14 been there!!!!! This video is so spot on! I'm glad you made this video.
i’ve always wanted to play guitar but the beginning just seemed so slow and frustrating
with yousiscian practising became fun and motivating
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Learn the E major chord A major chord and D major chord.
Play A D E in a cycle. Now you have a song with a I-IV-V progression in A.
Now learn which finger to move down one fret in order to change those chords from major to minor.
Now learn power chords so you can play rock (it's a major chord without the 3rd... so its only the root and the 5th)
Now learn the barre chord versions of those chords so you can move them all over the place.
Practice making up melodies by playing within the shape of those chords you learned.
Each time you hit a wrong note you will correct and try again and will improve.
@@citydogband any tips for absolute beginners
@@citydogband I don't think the advice is overcomplicated at all and I am a beginner that sounds like exactly what many people recommend from what I've seen. You don't want to spend all your time learning easy version of songs to start sure it is fun to play something that sounds like a song and you will get more comfortable with the guitar but if you actually want to learn you should be focusing on chords not individual songs
i just think about how there are hundreds of thousands of great guitarists and if that many people can get there by building up their skills and started in the same place then i cant be any different
