Mindset is one of the most important factors in doing good in anything, there are people who's careers is to make high performing athletes have better mindsets, if you ever want to do anything at a high level you have to have a dedication and a near obsession with what you're trying to do. Once you have achieved what you're hoping for it makes it much sweeter if you know you had to work for years and years to do it. Great video Bernth, you're a great inspiration to many!

Near? You have to be obsessed. Addicted to what you want to do. The most successful guys in all fields were obsessed freaks to many people because some people cant fathom the dedication they had.Even I cant. I always knew my lack of practice and dedication was what hindered me of being a much better musician than I am. To already excel sometimes you just need a few minutes a day and consistency. But to be the best? Boy you have to manage to fit 30 hours in a 24h day

@Bernth Learning to play guitar has made my life so much more enjoyable and has really helped my mental perspective. You’ve been the guide on this journey and I will be forever grateful; being diligent with your lessons on Patreon has been such an enjoyable experience. We all get to our destinations on the backs of those who have taken those journeys before us. I thank you for being someone who would share that experience rather than pull the ladder up. My playing will always have a tinge of your influence and for that I am a better player. Thank you for all you’ve done and I look forward to where you’re headed!

Great message! I really respect the character you demonstrate in your gentle yet effective and moving reaction to this commenter. A big part of your success in addition to your very hard work and amazing playing comes from your heart to share and motivate others to be their best.
I'm an old gal that has been toying at learning classical guitar in my limited free time. ("Essential worker putting in 70+hour weeks) Your videos caught my attention some weeks ago, the ones where you showed your 4am routines to work one skill. I subscribed immediately. I just bought my first electric guitar at 53 and am so excited to find this community and and your courses.

Bernth. I've been playing guitar for 30 years, and I was never that great at it. I'm still not that great at it. But I'm getting better. I'm focusing harder and I'm practicing better. And I'm actually seeing improvement for the first time in over a decade. I've been in a rut and you and your content helped me out of it. You got me motivated to be a better me. And for that, I thank you deeply. This guy is definitely wrong. Mindset makes all the difference in the world.

In today’s world of guitar, there is such an amazing opportunity to learn from people like you! A great follow up to this video would be a look at the evolution of guitar from the 1960’s to the present day- what has changed in how guitarists learn. Here’s an example- I learned how to play pinch harmonics by going with a friend to see someone who was playing guitar in his basement- This was the first time I ever heard pinch harmonics- this was 1970’s- he showed me how to do it- we learned from person to person in real time- no internet - no RUclips- no videos- no rock tab books - person to person.

Inspiring and very correct. Ive learned as a musician and content creator that instead of looking at people who play better than me or are more successful and being jealous, I look at them and see if there's things about them or that they're doing that I can borrow and make it my own, because normally if someone is successful at music or anything there's reasons why and you can learn from that.

Man, I love the positivity. I actually dinged my first guitar the other day. It devastated me that I did something dumb that damaged my instrument I love. I let the anger at myself even interfere with my practice as I would get angry every time I looked at the ding on my headstock. But, I have to chalk it up as a lesson learned to be more careful and not to let it rob my of the enjoyment of playing. Listening to this really makes me realize how I made such a big deal out of something that shouldn’t be. Thanks Bernth.

So many times people only see the finished product (yeah I know you are always growing but you are very accomplished now) and assume it was handed to you on a silver platter or that you have super power talents not possessed by the mere mortal person!! Of course, as you proved, that is not the case. I am glad to see you have identified the characteristics that causes people to rise above the rest and that’s a dogged determinism and an uncompromising drive to achieve your goals no matter the cost! You are a special individual Bernth, not because you are an amazing guitarist, even though you definitely are, but because you have figured out how to attain your dreams and more importantly taught others how to do the same. I believe people like you would be wildly successful at whatever path you would have chosen be it surgeon, chef, professor or virtuoso guitarist!! Sorry for the long post and with that I’ll say this - “look to the past to review your failures and victories; to the present realize them; at to the future to visualize things even greater than you can imagine”!! May God bless you in all that you do!

I'm really starting to like you ALOT. I agree with ALL of this. I started playing in highschool and some of my friends started before I did. Fast forward to now, I've played 23+ years and worked very hard to get to the point I am at. My friends....some still play but they never got anywhere and they think the only reason I did is just "natural talent"....it's infuriating and dismissive. It's discipline, just like you say. I've had some very rough times, addiction, rock bottom, treatment, redemption and thru it ALL I never stopped. I'd spend sweat drenched nights in withdrawal unable to sleep and I would make myself play guitar. I never let anything derail my goal I made as a kid, I wanted to be an advanced player, I'm not the greatest, I have incorrect alternate executions of techniques because my pinky doesn't like to always cooperate. Legato was specifically a challenge I had long ago thought I'd never meet. I saw a small flourish I saw EVH do a few times, then saw Satriani do it as well, I took that and crafted my ENTIRE legato technique from that. It's limiting in max speed but it works and I don't have to use my pinky as much. It's odd looking and often baffles players that have no idea WTF I'm doing or how I'm even doing it....so I must be doing something right lol. It was not $ or "natural talent" it was God damn passion and discipline. I'm glad you are spreading this message.

I so appreciate what you have done and said here. So many people get discouraged and then throw shade on people who succeed, not knowing the whole story. My playing is my responsibility and if I want to play out in public I have to go get those gigs. I have all kinds of joint pain in my hands. There are many things I cannot physically do but instead of complaining I have simply adopted my physical limitations into a technique. I would still love to shred like so many but it probably isn't going to happen. But I sound like me, which should be the goal, for others to find their own voice on the instrument and experience joy in their music activity. Done preaching now, lol!

Great video! Thanks for the positive reinforcement. I went to college right out of high school on a music scholarship and totally squandered it for various reasons. Over the many years since, I've always lamented about this and played with the idea of going back and trying again because it would be so awesome to be able to spend all my time on music. I finally realized I don't spend the time I already have available on guitar and music very well at all, and what I really need is discipline and sacrifice. School would be nice, but the mindset will take me way further. Developing that mindset is a skill in itself, and what is most important. I wish I had figured that out years ago, but I'm glad I finally am. It's exciting to see how much faster I'm progressing after years of half assed practice and feeling like nothing is happening.

You're quite inspiring! I just bought a guitar and have been looking through your videos in order to learn. I do 3D modeling and I'm kinda going through what you were - I post something to very few likes on Instagram and to be honest, it can be very deflating, but also, I look back at what I was doing a year ago and I see so much progress, so I tend to also temper my deflation by looking at how much I've evolved. Thank you for this video! I also have to say that I'd be willing to bet the pressure was immense standing on stage about to play along side them.

BERNTH, you're awesome. Thank you for putting this content out, it has inspired me to get serious about my guitar playing. I've been in a couple "bands" but never got anywhere past learning how to play a few specific riffs from a few specific songs. I bought a used bass about five years ago because I wasn't confident enough to go for all six strings, but now I'm thinking about going whole hog with it and getting a six-string. I've always been passionate about music, but I never devoted much effort into it. You have imparted upon me the confidence to go for it and stick with it. I'm more financially restricted now then I was before, but you're right about having the drive and diligence to keep working hard at it. Thank you for all the effort you put into teaching those of us with much less experience.

As a musician, a content creator and producer, this is probably one of the most relatable videos you've done so far. So I just want to say thank you for that. You mention discipline and mindset being one of the largest factors out of it all and I completely agree with you. It's opened my eyes, somewhat. I have definitely fallen victim to distraction and questioning my own self-worth; feeling burned out from it all. You name it. I will use this as motivation to get myself to where I want to be and achieve my goals. Thank you.

Everyone has their own struggles, and all of them are valid. I've been fortunate enough that my parents have supported me economically, and have had no issues with that.
But sadly money can't fix the fact that both of my shoulders are damaged to the point that I'm going in to surgery for the third time soon, which means I won't be able to play for a year(each time). I also have mental issues that made me have to drop out of my music education. I've been focusing all my time on therapy for borderline personality disorder for the last three years, while playing the little bit of guitar playing I can each day(Bernths short excercises have been a priority in that department).
So I've barely been able to function as a human being, both physically and mentally. Still I'm proud to say that I'm a bit ahead of the curve when it comes to my guitar playing, and have been successful as a local guitar teacher for three years.
I'm in extreme pain as I'm writing this, because I've been playing guitar.
I've been extremely frustrated, and wanted to give up at so many points in my life. But that day has yet to come.

Fair enough bro, if you were disciplined enough to see light at the end of the tunnel with music, surviving on some crappy cheese, it def takes mindset to make it happen. Been def depressed for a while, talking more about it and discovering your spider video is helping with setting at least some goals every day. Music is such a passion for me and I've been very comfortable with my practice sessions for a long time now. Appreciate getting out of the comfort zone. If you can do it, so can I man. Heh, he said that buying a very expensive guitar would help, when actually in reality there are a bit of options out there that are very cheap that still sounds good, heck I remember my first Guitar wasn't even a guitar, it was a cheap toy guitar with strings, but I still used it to play even if it didn't sound that great, but the point is, not every guitar has to be expensive, some expensive ones don't sound has well sometimes, but that is because some of them need more adjustments, that was something a good friend of mine showed me from personal experience, but yes in all with the other stuff, Mind set is something most needed, because without that and patience, your enthusiasm while being impatient for playing will wear you out mentally and physically, because it can get exhausting and while rushing through it, you won't be as precise with it and can mess up more while practicing or playing

I usually never leave comments, but I've got to say your determination and devotion has been really inspiring. I decided to follow my dream recently and it has lead me to your channel. Even though I first picked up the guitar when I was 11 life got in the way and gave up. Now that I'm nearly 50 and finally in a financial position to get back into playing guitar im determined to pursue playing.
If I may, would you consider your slogan/ catchphrase to be "Follow your dream"? I hear you day it quit frequently.
Found your channel a week ago and decided I'm going to subscribe to your patreon. Dies soll viel Spaß machen!

I started picking my guitar again after watching your videos. I am stuck with my current speed and questioning myself if I could improve more. With a goal in mind I will set a routine (for a month) to test my self. I'll practice with much discipline and focus. Thanks to you for inspiring me . Love from 🇵🇭

Nailed the theme with the mindset discussion. I was one of the poor kids that started out with a cheap acoustic with a broke neck, no lessons, guidance, support or internet. Excuses back then were in my opinion a little easier to get away with.
Later in life when I had a decent job, spare time and unlimited lessons available on the internet I was able to play things I thought were impossible earlier in life.
I'm not a great player but realize that anyone who truly wants to master guitar in today's world it is possible if you're dedicated and disciplined..

I don't comment too often on you tube vids but it's worth saying that anyone who gets to a point of virtuosity....or even just being 'damn good' at their chosen genre/style of music, has probably put in the hours. Not only the hours, but has put in the 'right' hours. Practiced the 'right' things and in a way that meant they progressed faster than the rest of us. They studied and played, learned from others and combined that with a personality that is driven and determined to put themselves 'out there' in the firing line for their art. I have to say, you deserve all the success you have and are going to have, as does anyone who has worked hard enough to get to that position. No point being jealous.........if you REALLY want it, work you ass off too and you just might get it....but not if you a bitter and resentful dick about it.........

When we understand the fact that, in almost all of the cases, we ALREADY have what we need to reach OUR GOALS!!! When you concentrate in your GOALS with all the cells in your body, suddenly you start getting gear, books, videos, people, situations, etc., that in some way helps you to GET YOUR GOAL. Trust yourself and continue working with discipline. Sooner than what you thing, is going to pay off. KEEP GOING :D
Thank you very much for your video, It's just what we need to carry on 🎶🎸

Whether or not you have help from your family, playing guitar and becoming a professional has very little to do with money and more to do with discipline and determination. Not to mention being a musician is a risky career choice because there is no guarantee that you will make a proper living even if you are amazing at your instrument. People will always have negative things to say, especially on social media. I commend you for your journey as a musician so far. The one thing that I think you are best at is helping others. You are a great teacher and you are living the dream that you worked hard for. Congrats and please keep putting out the amazing guitar content!

Without saying it, the one thing I have gleaned from your videos over the years watching you is exactly what you said today: DISCIPLINE. The problem with opportunity is that it comes disguised as HARD WORK. I'll never be a fantastic guitar player because I haven't been the most disciplined player. It is not my chosen field of profession. However, what I do for a living I'm great at because I was disciplined enough and wanted it bad enough that I worked my ass off to get it. Loading & unloading trucks by day while going to school at night after I had lost both my parents, both my brothers and my sister by the age of 25. I was truly alone in the world and it was up to me to make it. No one else but myself, so no bullshit excuses or "whoa is me" mindset. I wanted it, worked my ass off and got it. Today I'm a director for a group of internationally broadcast television networks, & I guarantee most of you have seen my work. Bernth, you deserve every accolade and opportunity you get because you did it the honest, old fashioned way; you worked your ass off for it! Congrats on the success, and keep going, you are an amazing player & human being! Peace...,

I would add to this equation one more thing, what ancient latins called "quid". There's a special sparks, something you have been made to do and the difference it's evident when you create music. Technique, practice, music theory are all equal important. But what makes you stand outside is the ability to translate something you got into music and reach the one who will listen. That's the greatness. Compose song that not only are unique, but also are capable to leave a mark. This do not comes with technique, practice and music theory. They may help, surely. This come from unknown place of ourselves. You got it or not. There is no trade off.

It all boils down to marketing strategy and how you can sell yourself. There are many over-the-top guitarists or musicians out there who got their skills far beyond even some of the greatest musicians known but why aren't they getting noticed by many people? Skills aren't enough to get the attention you are looking for. You will also need to know how to create your own brand to stand-out among others in the same pool as you. Bernth in this case incorporates an entrepreneural and influencer mindset aside from just being a pro-guitarist and that made him his own brand.

Good advice...I think most people play for the sheer enjoyment or happiness it brings. You have persisted to the point where you tour and are very successful. But I dont think it's as clear cut as you make it, sometimes life throws you curve balls you might get a mental illness or suffer from depression or suffer some other ailment. You can be as determined as you like these things will affect you

If I could like this video 10,000 times (10.000 for the EU folks), I would do so. This is perhaps the best message I've ever seen on RUclips, especially in the genre of guitar instruction.
Your attitude and motivation are spot-on and truly inspiring. Kudos to you Bernth Brodträger.
I discovered you about two weeks ago, and in that span you've encouraged me to start a regimented practice strategy that I've been applying since Tuesday, 9-August (with a break yesterday).
I decided to start with that, and use the same strategy to change many aspects of my life in a structured way, because that's the only way to be successful. Be mindful, have awareness of your limitations, adjust, and keep moving. Focus on yourself, and the rest falls into place in life.

I absolutely agree with you. I am not a great guitarist. I am not even a guitarist, but a guitar owner only. And the reason for that is that playing the guitar was never the most important for me. Not even in top3. I earned two university degrees, I learned two foreign languages (und ja, die Andere ist Deutsch ;-) ), I've got a quite okay job, a house with a green garden, wonderful children, and so on. But I never got a good guitarist, and I never will. It's okay, all these were my decisions, my preference, my choices. I had/have disciplined mindset on other areas, but not in music. I've got what I worked for, and I haven't got what I did not work for. So simple.
I still enjoy playing the guitar even if I can't. ;-)
