No it's not. Actually nothing is impossible to not know, neither Smoke on the water. I also barely know "Loosing my religion". About House of rising sun: I accidentaly heard that song on some youtube top list, but it never was on the radio/tv/any random playlist, neither many people mention it unlike Smoke on the water, Smells like teen spirit or Nothing else matters. So no, it's not impossible to not-know, and that kind of reactions will just demotivate and stop him of will to hear it for the first time.

I still can't get over you not knowing House of the Rising Sun, it's a classic! great song and chord sequence, fairly simple too. I see most people play Smoke on the Water wrong because of the key , or they use a pick ( Ritchie mostly uses two finger to pinch the two strings for the riff or pick and finger to pinch them ) he also frequently moves it around on the neck. The hard part is actually getting the rhythm right in the verse, it's mainly just Gm but then has that F on the 3rd beat of the last bar of each line for just one beat.

Funny that house of the rising sun is one of the first that I learned but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. I think it sorta depends on the individual learning what songs are easier, kind of depending what chords they can pick up easier.. I started playing before the internet so I learned whatever stuff I could find in guitar magazines and the few people I could learn from. Some were oldies. I think heart of gold by Neil Young was a decent one for me. I felt like I could play something...lol.. Hendrix was my main influence really so I tried to play some of his stuff.. Actually always did pretty good at picking up Hendrix for some reason.. maybe because I wanted it so bad...lol . Another obsessed by the Man... But I mainly learned anything I could from anyone to advanced back then.. I remember getting guitar magazines and the cd that came with it. Mostly licks.. you might learn a song or two if you were lucky but a lot of licks and parts of songs.. and some months weren't as great as others for selection but usually always something to learn. It was what we had and books and cd's or videos . I really don't remember seeing many videos.. You could find books with cd's at music stores.. I feel like I could get much better much quicker these days with available resources. The internet and all.. But you need someone to help you get started at least. Maybe a few people have done it without help but it would be much easier to get going.. Then jamming with people! Even if it's bad at first, it's gonna get your timing more in the pocket.. Sorry for the ramble, just my experience.. As a self taught player mostly...

I have to disagree with the statement that "power chords AREN'T easy to learn"
I found them incredibly easy when I was starting and actually inspired me to keep going in a way. The shape of a power chord is natural. The fingers want to go there. And, maintaining the distance between fingers when the fingers naturally sit in that position is easy as well. I was learning all kind of punk songs days after I learned what a power chord was. So, for that reason I kinda disagree.

I do agree with that to some degree, but that can also be because you both seem to have the natural talent to do so. For a lot of people who aren't that gifted, they may find power chords hard to do themselves. So I, myself, wouldn't say they are hard or easy, just that some people pick it up naturally and some don't. I picked up power chords fast myself, but I didn't find it too easy to begin with.

It's still to this day the only song I can play all the way through (I gave up on soloing after high school and just have learned cool riffs ever since). Never learned Wonderwall cuz it was a weird picking patter, same with House of the Rising Sun. Good Riddance is super easy even with all the little notes in between. Never learned White Stripes song cuz I don't care for it. Smoke on the water was the first riff I learned, but I also learned it with the chuck berry style "rock a" 2 note finger position.

So the irony of the “Smoke On The Water” thing, is that for being the “most played beginner riff” or whatever, in reality, no one knows how to play it. Even when they do manage to play it in the right key, it’s still wrong most of the time. Everyone plays 0-3-5 on the D and G strings simultaneously, and so on, but the real way that Blackmore played it was 5 and 5 on A and D, then 3 and 5 across D and G. Basically everyone plays the whole riff on D and G strings, and then they go “this is how its really played”. Wrong. Everything is played on D and G strings, except the G chord, which is played on 5th fret A and D strings. Theres no open strings being used in the whole riff.

House of the Rising Sun is actually a lot harder than it looks especially the timing in between each note. Hilton Valentine chose to pick certain strings and took his hand off the fretboard in-between chords, which means the last note in each section is actually 'out of key'. I suppose the easy way to play it is like Tyler demonstrated but even that is still tricky for a total beginner. To play it like the original recording, you'd need a fair bit of practice to get it right and some professional guitarists can't even play it perfectly.

For the thumb in Nirvana: it is to mute the E string when playing the A# and the C# power chords, which play on the A-D-G strings. Popular technique among self-training guitarists.
For why they don't mention it in Iron Man, probably because it's more of a precise and less of an impulse-based riff, and for that reason, most people would choose the "pick only those two strings" method, instead of the normal "big hand motion, pick all strings and mute what you don't need" way like in grunge and punk songs.
Now that I write this, somebody with some guitar knowledge was certainly asked about a few things when this list was created.
