Hey Tyler, Kurt played 'Something In The Way' in two different variations, the first was his Unplugged performance (arguably my favorite) which consists of Drop C tuning and him playing on the 4th frets of the C and G (E/A strings). He does this almost as a double stop but then picks each note individually to the rhythm. Also he throws in a few power chords as well, but I believe they differ from the method he used when playing the more "grungy" version.

Yeah. I love guitar, but it seriously bothers me that so many guitarists dont understand songwriting. It really really bothers me. I dont know why anyone would even pick the instrument up if they weren't trying to write songs.
Yeah same, Something in the Way is my favorite Nirvana song (maybe Frances Farmer instead), it's by no means a strong technical work but it's an absolute masterclass in terms of communicating one specific feeeeeling And the Angry Chair intro is all about tone, Jerry is a killer guitarist
Dont tell that to all the 10 string tech death jazz fusioncore bands with all the scrawny tatted up guys with headless fretless guitars. Its all about DJENTING and tapping. Not really it all sucks balls and is derivative and bland
@@sparkycarpy5968 I agree. Its become so trendy. I view the Djent/core subculture as the metal/ rock equivalent of rap music. Seems to be all about having the most over the top, ridiculous looling headless/12 string from some obscure company with some ridiculous pickups installed. And it all sounds the same
@@Fireguy65 there are still some really creative metalcore bands on the hardcore side like Converge and Every Time I Die that do the technical style of metalcore in a very sludgey and unique way
I love all the people bashing him for not playing songs properly when he literally listens to 1 riff 1 time by ear then tries to recreate it based on musical skills.
Stanko Zovak I'm not saying he's never heard them before but just because he's heard them doesn't mean he's payed attention either. I've hear most if not all and I play by ear. I still definitely can't bust out all of those riffs the way he does.

@@TheMAGGuitar honestly the fact that two Alice songs are in that list bothers me a little, like they're kinda easy but having two makes them just look like another nirvana in terms of skill. Im not taking sides on whos better but Alice certainly have more technical proficiency than nirvana did. Also jerry cantrell would literally laugh at the cover of angry chair
He also played the riff wrong. The fifth string is in the fifth fret D, rather than the second fret B. Ebm7(no 3rd) is the actual name for that chord (even though the fifth is missing, too). More like Music is Fail! 🤣🤣🤣
Sasha Pierce it made me cringe so hard. Oh yeah, I know this one. (Murders riff) plays lead part with big ass grin. Oh yeah, I learnt more. Moves on. Me: *visibly cringes*
I'm just starting and by that I mean I literally started yesterday so this seems absolutely amazing to me, being able to play something just from listening to it
Milan Milacic the more you play, and the more you learn, you’ll start to recognize certain chords/chord structures, scales, and intervals between notes. Almost like how once you learn letters and words as a kid, you can just start reading familiar words without effort, except in this case it’s with your ears instead of your eyes (I hope that makes sense). Keep playing and you’ll be able to do this as well, if you haven’t gotten to that point already. :)
What this list really demonstrates is how important rhythm and timing are. Many of these riffs are awesome because of "the sauce" you put on it. Which is the rhythm, timing, and inflection. And as demonstrated by the comments, that part can be hard.
Salisbury yup for sure. it’s made up of power chords on the low E. also some slides down the E string after the melody. also the verses are played with a single note instead of chords
In defense of nothing else matters, when it was first written, James would sing it to his girlfriend over the phone and so he couldn't use his left hand. So at the time it was written, the open string riff was the main and only riff of the song. And even without that, I'd still consider it to be the main riff of the song.
Thanks for this video. Honestly, seeing a pro like you sitting and figuring out stuff at the same speed I normally do made me feel more accomplished. Great video!
There are no chords in "Something In The Way" ......just 4th fret on and off on top 2 strings. Literally 1st song to teach someone so they can play along and learn time and feel the rush of playing and hopefully get hooked.
It’s amazing that literally everyone plays the intro to Paranoid wrong. Even Randy Rhoads did when playing live. Listen closely to the record and live recordings of Iommi playing it- the riff doesn’t go high twice, it goes high the first time then back down the second time.
Something in the way is one of my favorite Nirvana songs. And I think it sounds shit for a reason. He's in drop c# and plays 0 4 0 4 0 4 How shit it sounds is to add to the mood of the lyrics
I believe kurt was laying on his back on a couch recording this song and the microphone was just hung by him. I truly think he was either in a really depressive state from withdrawal or on heroin
John Jerge I’m not sure that’s right. I remember Butch Vig saying they did it in a few takes in the studio. The song was definitely written from a very dark place though. As if he was a complete “street person” and broken.
15:57 Man in the Box wasn’t an E flat 5th chord, it was an E flat minor 7th chord. More specifically, just the root note and 7th from an E flat minor 7th chord.
just here to say this video could not come at a better time, i just got my first guitar yesterday and now i have riffs to practice. you and a few other youtube inspired me to pick it up and get closer to my favorite music. i got no amp and i’m using a cut credit card to play my electric, but hell if it isn’t fun. thank you!
He used a Digitech Whammy pedal..which is extra funny because it's the bright red one on middle shelf just to his left. lol. Except Jack used the original and that's a II (I'm pretty sure)
I thought this was more common knowledge than it seems to be, but I have seen a lot of people who know way more about music than me incorrectly say it is a bass.
He truly has talent to be able to pick up a song by listening to it once. I almost picked up seven nation army after listening for probably 2 hours and still got it wrong but at least I was a couple of frets off the whole time.
Jfran2013 The similarities are most obvious in the last 60 seconds of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” but Harrison adds more variation to the riff (which I think is a long standing blues riff, which is why it keeps showing up everywhere but nobody bothers with a lawsuit) to make his version sound unique.
while reading the tittle of this video, i misread and i thought it was "the Eeriest guitar riffs"....there's an idea!....love the videos man, awesome work
The A chord used in blitzkrieg bop used the 5th fret on the e string as a root and you just used the open a. Not really wrong but the way you played it makes it slightly harder because of faster movement on the fretboard.

He got so defensive on the Metallica riff for just talking about the beginning cause it wasnt "playing the song" but every song that had more to it before that he only played the beginning riff for. (I know he played more to one other riff but he said that was for fun)
Agreed. Nothing else matters is the easiest. It doesnt mean it's a bad thing. There is too much battle between punk, grunge and metal. A song doesn't have to be super complicated to be good and a simple song can be the best
@@johnnypunx8682 very agreed. Accept for grunge I like most of these genres and I like Nothing Else Matters. It's just the fact that for that one song He looked past the riff and played the opening solo when for other songs he didnt just because he felt offended or that it was stupid that song was on the list was to me, unproffessional
Except the riff isn't just the first 4 strings played twice. It's the whole thing he did. That's the riff. It's like saying you played Master of Puppets' riff because you did the first bar. That's not the entire riff
@@bucksncat1997 I understand that, but there were other riffs He used the exact opposit logic and not counting the whole beginning riffs. But he made an exception there. I just wish he did that for all the riffs it applied to
You are so right about the insult to ‘Nothing Else Matters’. That song has stuck by me since the beginning, and it improved over time as my technique improved. I’ll play this to show off in front of other guitar players. It’s my technique I get to show off on this easy song and it’s just fun to play.
The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Misfits, and Green Day all have some really dang easy songs that also sound really cool if you're into punk rock stuff. Nirvana also has some easy songs. Fortunately, those bands are my favorites.

It depends on how you look at it. Pretty much the only appeal of the song is the emotion it conveys. If you don't relate to it, or don't appreciate that, then it is pretty terrible. As from a technical standpoint, it could have been written by a 10 year old. It's literally 2 chords strummed over and over for 4 minutes. It's all about subjectivity. Saying it's amazing, and saying it's bad, are both equally true, just from different points of view.
royalcat10 I get that, music is subjective. I personally believe music isn’t all about technicality, emotion is important aswell. both are important for what the artist is conveying and personally cobain initiated emotions. And yeah two chords isn’t amazing but thinking abt the song with something more than those two simple chords seems difficult
@@leob4403 I wasn't saying anything about the arrogance in the statement he had made. I completely agree with that. But, it isn't wrong to say that, from a musical standpoint, the song is very poorly written. There's a difference between a song that uses two simple chords to do a lot, and this song that uses two chords to do very little. It's incredibly basic, and to say otherwise is just trying to paint Kurt in a brighter light than the work he put in for. ( *Not* to say in any way that he's undeserving of praise.) I personally enjoy the song. In this particular case, the song's appeal is 100% in the emotion of the song. Not in the musicality of it. It is not unwarranted for a person to completely trash on this song if you're looking at it from a musical standpoint. It's absolutely possible that he could have put forward the same amount of emotion, with a better composition. But he didn't. That was his artistic choice, and something that can be equally praised and criticized for. I like it, you may like it, but don't get upset when others don't. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
royalcat10 100% agree, I solemnly wrote my comment because of his statement “don’t bother listening to this “riff”. To each their own with music but it came off pretentious. But yeah tbh why even learn the song? I can get with that
You are an amazing guitar player, but my favorite part of this was watching you learn the intro to "Rock You Like A Hurricane" like a human! Thanks for your efforts and entertaining channel.
For something in the way, the reason you can sorta hear a high note is cause Kurt had strange technique with his power chords where he would barre his ring finger across the strings as if he was trying to create some kind of barre chord and because of that, he would accidentally hit odd intervals when playing his power chords. Go look at him playing songs live and you can see that he’s doing that.
Something in the way is one of the first songs I ever learned... I must say I’m a big fan of your RUclips but disappointed you wouldn’t give it a chance
Come as you are is for me the easiest one by far, I don't even play the guitar and managed to play it in one minute the first time I touched a guitar (it wasn't on an electric guitar though, I don't know if it makes it easier or something)
Totally agree with most of your commentary. My 2 cents are the Black Sabbath riffs are easy from a broad stand point but if you really try to play them the way Tony did. Hard No. There's a lot of tone & feel that comes from the finger pressure & rhythm. Experience makes a huge difference with so-called "Easy Riffs".
You played Something in the way wrong and it’s not a bad song at all. It’s simple and effective and that’s what Nirvana is. Considering it’s on the biggest album of the 90s it’s not a bad song.

I have been playing 35 years and very much enjoy Tylers videos
Saying something in the way is terrible is a bit harsh
( *Not* to say in any way that he's undeserving of praise.)
I personally enjoy the song.
I can get with that
The video isn't about the subject matter of the song, it's looking at it purely from a musical standpoint, and musically the song isn't good.
On 'one note song' YOU FORGOT THE BENDY PART! Listen to the full song x)
The reason “The Man Who Sold the World” is so easy is because the bass is doing all the work.

Paul David's video on song 2 is actually quite good, most guitar tabs get the song wrong and it's harder to play than most make it out to be
Man in the box is actually easier than you were playing it.
The heavy part in Blur's Song Two is actually a distorted bass, the guitar part is different.
If I remember right it’s just playing 13 on the b string for the chorus
Totally agree with most of your commentary. My 2 cents are the Black Sabbath riffs are easy from a broad stand point but if you really try to play them the way Tony did. Hard No. There's a lot of tone & feel that comes from the finger pressure & rhythm. Experience makes a huge difference with so-called "Easy Riffs".
