Hi Thuy, Nice traps! I met you Saturday morning at the ramp. Nice to meet you!!!! The crabs we got were mostly small but we were able to get 10 Nice keepers and a few reds too. Fish On! MikeMaria
When you work for you're own money everything feels so much better. I have wanted this for years, and now starting this journey is already super rewarding, and I haven't even touched the water. Love you're channel man, I just subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Wow, that's a sturdy custom-made crab hoop. It’s way better than the ones that you buy at the West Marine or Amazon. It’s totally cost effective and it gives you more options to do whatever you like i.e add additional weights inside the PVCs to keep it submerged without spending extra money on clumsy leads, etc. Very clever Brother Thuy. As fishing/crabbing regulations keep changing every year, you just can’t throw your hard-earned money at the problem by spending more $$$$ on new gear. You have got to adapt and be creative to make your own gear. Great job Brother and keep up those great vids coming.
Thanks brother Thomas. I always love your great comments and your kinds words. I love to do DIY videos bthan fishing unless it is about technics or set ups. I will see you soon brother.
Yep. No joke. You can make 2 hoop nets for about $50 this way. I'm using plastic chicken wire since I can't source net material in time for this weekend and I already had a lot of zip ties. That's less than half of what it would cost to buy 2 hoop nets.
Thanks for watching. I really spent only $20 for a trap because I bought everything in bulk. $10 for 20' 1/2" rebars, 5'x20' net for $170 (can make 25 hoops), cheap zip tie, and $5 for 1/2 pvc
@@Fishing247 makes total sense and honestly, I didn't mean in a negative way. I meant to emphasize that it's a great idea and DIY allows for more modifications, plus cost effectiveness. When I said "more like $40", i was going of off "not bulk" retail cost. Either way - it does not matter :) Great option and way to go!
@@MaverickFishing thank you for your comment. I really appreciate for the feed back. I have never take it in a negative way. You are correct if you just buy materials for a couple hoops than it will be 30 to $40. I just want to share with other fishermen how to make the hoops Incase they can't buy them. Thanks again for your supports and comments.
@@kongmoua1761 definitely a typo on his end. He meant 3/8 and not 1/2 rebar. Which makes this project even cheaper. I just realized that I've been overpaying for my rebar. Thanks for listing the price here. I've been buying 10' for $5.37 and 20' is $5.48. What a rip off and price difference makes no sense! 10 extra feet for only 11 cents extra? I am on my way to HD to buy 20' that i need for my backyard now!
So for people looking to get supplies, 3 10 foot pieces of rebar, 1 piece of 10 foot 1/2 inch PVC, and the plastic chicken wire comes to a little under $60 at home depot and you get 2 hoop nets out of it. A little more if you get the extra rebar for weight. One piece of the 3/8 rebar will yield the 2 top rings. To put it in perspective if you were to buy this, you'd be spending at least $50 each hoop net of this style. Last time I priced it, came out to $120 plus tax for 2 pots. For crabbers on a budget looking to feed their families, as my late grandfather used hunting and fishing to do when he was dirt poor, this is the better option.
@@Fishing247 ahh! Good to know. Since I bought a truck to tow my boat and protect my prius, I didn't have the resources to buy in bulk. Even so, on a per pot basis it's pretty close. Especially since I'm likely to get more than 2 pots out of the plastic chicken netting.
Would netting be the only option for this style of open hoop net? Could you substitute chicken wire for the netting? Great informational materials, thank you!
You can use PVC or rubber coatings to prevent rust , but I only did the rubber coatings last year and it cost $5 more per hoops so I stopped the coating. And wah the hoops each use, but still rusting but does not bother me. Thanks for your comment.
Just got update from DFG - The recreational take of Dungeness crab using crab traps in Fishing Zones 3 and 4, (from the Sonoma/Mendocino county line to Lopez Point) will be temporarily restricted when the season opens on Nov. 6 due to presence of humpback whales and leatherback sea turtles and the potential for entanglement from trap gear. But is says it also says - Recreational take of Dungeness crab by other methods, including hoop nets and crab snares, is not affected by the temporary trap restriction and is allowed statewide beginning Nov. 6, 2021 So are these nets and the old style round ring nets legal from a boat starting Nov 6? Do you just tie a line to a buoy and drop in ocean?
Yes. You need 5 X5 net for the 32 to 36'' diameter hoops. You can also purchase the promar replacement net with a higher price but it will be easier to do.
If you look up the CDFW Ocean Sport fishing regulations, it specifies what dimensions, how many support bars you can have etc. I've built a couple myself. Just like the video, I use 3/8' rebar, from Home Depot. I bought a $17 fishing net from Wal-Mart. and tied to the frame.

Yes Robert. These hoops are legal.
For hoop net off boat do you need to add the extra small red buoy after your main buoy? Or is that only for Crab traps?
No. You do not need the 3x5 red bouy for hoops. You do even need to buy the extra stamp for hoops, only for traps.
Great videos. Thanks. Do you know what size net did you use? I saw 5'x10' net on ebay and amazon and wondering if that is good enough for 2 hoop nets.
5 x 10 will do 2 hoops. I think it is a 2" X 2". No bigger than 2". I purchased 5x100' for $170 Save money. Have fun.
